Getting flatrate electricity soon, so any dual mode mining with cg/bfgminer on the horizon? Preferably linux based.

I've been running 20 gridseeds for nearly a week now on a Pi Rasberry with cpuminer and have never had to reboot and they have not missed a beat, I'm running at 900 and averaging 350 to 370 Hk/s
What hubs are you using?

Is there a theoretical limit of Gridseeds we can run on a Windows machine? I have my original 10 hooked up to an old Windows7 netbook and its slick...I love it. It only has 3 USB ports. How many hubs can be daisy-chained off just this one machine?

The USB Spec states 7 addressable bits so 128 total devices - 1 for the host address which leaves 127 devices PER HOST CONTROLLER.  Each controller is also rated to support up to 5 levels of USB devices.

The cheaper the hub the less actual ports that are allowed.   Either way when you plug in a USB hub you lose at least 1 available USB address for the HUB itself.  Many of the cheap hubs (like the 10-12 port ones I use for $8) contain 2 internal HUB's self + 1 so I lose 2 addresses per hub and can connect 9 devices (+1 hub) to it.

After this it gets to be like time travel.

3 ports with 1 12 port hub in each (with two internal hubs) = 36 ports usable, 43 addresses used.

Daisy chain in another level and you get another 33 ports (36 - 3 used) and cost another 42 addresses = 85 used.
Plugging into the same hubs again you get another 33 usable ports and cost 42 addresses which should max out the controller in the laptop

So 8 bits, 128 addresses, 7 12 port hubs, 102 usable ports.

EDITED.

Thanks man. I wonder with three "ports"  if the netbook actually had three USB controllers. Only one way to find out....   Wink

One way I know is list shown under Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus controllers.  Roll Eyes

Huh Huh Huh Heeeelp!

Hi.

Two days ago I got a Gridseed 5 chips miner. I tried almost everything, but my computers don't recognise the miner. On Win7 Ult x64 I get always 'USB device not recognised'. I tried to install the two different type of drivers mentioned in various fora and blogs, I tried to substitute them using Zadig. Nothing worked.
Then I tried under MacOS 10.9. Same result.

Has somebody an idea? I have three graphics cards, a BlockErupter USB miner and a BFL 25 GH/s miner all working perfectly. But this Gridseed miner I driving me crazy!!!

Every idea is welcome.

Bye
lcettuzzi

Did you try this?

http://cryptomining-blog.com/1262-download-cgminer-3-7-2-for-windows-scrypt-mining-on-gridseed-5-chip-gc3355-asics/

Thanks.

I already tried this but I doesn't work.

I'm wondering if the miner is correctly working. Perhaps there is a hardware problem.

Thanks aganin.

Bye

I have some problems connecting these to a Windows PC, I tried to follow the guides provided. The problem is, when I connect the HUB all devices show up in the device manager. I can't install the Zagig driver of the HUB (because 10 devices show up - see screenshot) and therefore I can't start CGminer. CPUminer works if I specify a specific COM port for a single unit. My preference strongly goes to get this working on CGminer since I want to over clock and monitor via the API.

Any suggestions?

After much searching, questions and testing this what I learned about the Pi.
The Bit Fury guys have done alot with the Pi, They were having the same issues with Hub sizes and levels.
Seems that the Pi can run 20 and thats about it, Anything after that the network drops and gets laggy as hell. It's finicky with usb hubs. http://elinux.org/RPi_Powered_USB_Hubs

You will not see a hub over 10 for a Pi in the wiki.

Your best bet is to give BFgminer a try. No extra drivers required and if you want to persue the cgminer route you need to add the zagig driver to all instances of the ST driver under com ports.

You can find it here

To your opinion, if runing 4 gridseeds, CPUminer is the best one to use for a noob?

Any way to get bfgminer to display more then just 15 GS units? I have 28 hooked up but can't see what they are all doing. Windows BTW.

wolfey,

how much do you think I can overclock the gridseed by doing just the pencil mod and bridge mod? the last remaining mod is a bit out of my leage,

and you are a continent away so I cannot send them over to you that would be really not cost effective haha^^

The resistor mod is necessary to clock over 950MHz stably. Especially to even get 1000mhz to be stable and pretty much hw error free.
But, if you can do the solder bridge, you should be able to do the resistor replacement just as easily.

Best performance is with all 4 mods. That's just the way it is if you don't want to have to put up with red nuisances 'nonce's' Wink

could you show me what resistor I can use or buy on ebay for example? I'm in Spain and here the local electronic shops are pretty hard to find.

The solder mod is a pain but it can be done I did all mine and I am running at 950 with no errors. For 3 days straight so far.

wolfey,

how much do you think I can overclock the gridseed by doing just the pencil mod and bridge mod? the last remaining mod is a bit out of my leage,

and you are a continent away so I cannot send them over to you that would be really not cost effective haha^^

Wolfey2014, can you let me know where to find these "mods" which are being talked about?
I would like if it's something I can handle or not. Limited electronics experience here.
Used a soldering iron once or twice...
Is anyone selling GSDs which have the mods already applied?

Any way to get bfgminer to display more then just 15 GS units? I have 28 hooked up but can't see what they are all doing. Windows BTW.

right click on the bfg window menu bar and go to properties. Go to layout, change the height to 40 or 50, hit apply/ok restart bfgminer.

You can also arrow down in the window to make it scroll.

Sure!
Volt Mods thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=519112.new;topicseen#new
Start on page 1.
Pics of all 4 mods start on page 6 courtesy of sandor111.

I've been thinking about offering new pods with the mods Wink
If there is a market for this, I just might do it!
I certainly can do these mods without bricking them....
I'll have to test run each pod before and after modding, before releasing them to the customer.

I'll probably have to charge around $50 a pop, including shipping perhaps, to cover all costs.
Might be able to do it for less though. We'd have to see how it pans out.
This would include the whisper quiet 5V fan modification too. These would be Scrypt only mods!
If you wanted to mine SHA, you'd probably have to covert the fan back to 12V operation.
But, that gives me another idea...... Wink

I suppose I could have the customer drop ship their order to me here, do the mods then ship them to the customer.

One could certainly recover the cost per unit in a matter of a couple weeks I would think.
