This is appalling, the richest cricket board is not paying salaries to players who have generated so much revenue for the board. Players should take this issue to court.

Indian courts are useless. It takes around 20-30 years to get a judgement. One of my friends had a property dispute and after 25 years they had an out of court settlement to resolve the issue. If they had waited for a judgement, then it could have easily taken another two decades. Since overseas players are involved, I would advise them to go for international arbitration. Only such judgements can force the BCCI to make payments with due interest. Really feel bad about the players.. after all the hard work they end up unrewarded.
Property dispute are bound to take such a long time but, high profile cases do get over in a small period of time. Political case are the fastest. Anyways BCCI should have paid these players their due amount.

ESPN Cricinfo has reported that the Indian national women's team are yet to receive the prize money from the 2020 T20 World Cup, despite that event commencing almost 15 months ago. It amazes me how the BCCI treats its domestic and women players. Despite being the richest board, they always treat these players like untouchables. Many of them have no other source of revenue, and despite that there is an unnecessary one and half years delay in distributing the payments. I am sure that they will never allow such delays with the salaries of the administrators.
Since this incident came to light that Indian National Women's team is yet to receive the prize money, Brad Hodge came out and asked the BCCI about the money one of the IPL team owe him 10 years ago and how to proceed to get that money as he is yet to get 35% of the contracted money which is a fairly large amount of money $127,000
according to some reports considering his contract amount.

Will see how many players will pop up asking them to pay up that could literally humiliate the richest and powerful cricket board Grin.

Why he's not asking same to his respective franchise?

As far as i understand he and franchise signed the whatever contract on that time. BCCI didn't bought him during the auction, Franchise did. So any dispute should be between him and franchise. BCCI can mediate but saying that BCCI should pay him sounds weird to me.

The problem here is that the franchise in question no longer exists (Cochin Tuskers). So I believe that it is the duty of the BCCI to reimburse the players of whatever dues that are pending. After all, the BCCI has the overall responsibility for the IPL, and they receive franchise fee. Given the slow pace of the legal system in India, going to the courts is not something that I would recommend. It has been 10 years (if I am not wrong, the money is owed from 2011), and the players don't deserve to undergo this trauma.

I looked into it and it seems that BCCI already asked overseas players to sue the franchise.

This is from Wiki...

"Termination from the IPL
Due to a dispute amongst the team owners, the franchise failed to pay the 10% bank guarantee element of the franchise fee which was supposed to be paid before the 2011 season began. The BCCI claimed that it had sent several requests for payment to the franchise owners but received no response.[15] On 19 September 2011, then BCCI president N. Srinivasan announced that the franchise was being terminated because it had failed to provide the bank guarantee.[16] On 14 October 2011, the IPL Governing Council announced that there would be only nine teams participating in 2012 after the Kochi franchise was expelled.[17] The players from the side were auctioned to other franchises in the 2012 IPL player auction. Players who attracted no bids had their salaries covered via the team's bank guarantee from the previous season
"

This article suggest the same
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/indian-premier-league-kochi-s-foreign-players-asked-to-sue-owners-549234

This seems a real reason to not pay directly and looks like most of the kochi players got compensated through reauction.

"Our prime concern will be the players' interest, their interest is not hampered in terms of financial losses and also in terms of their participation in the tournament," he told PTI. "Suppose these players are re-auctioned for some other franchise and if there is any difference in what they are supposed to get, it will be compensated by us."

The need for the players to file individual cases arose because the player contracts are between the players and the franchises, and not the BCCI. Under Indian law, a legal agreement between two parties is required when it comes to remitting money overseas. In the absence of an agreement, if the board transferred money to the players in other countries, it would violate the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, something it has already been accused of violating multiple times by the government.

Therefore to avoid contravening the law, the board wants the players to sue Kochi with the BCCI included as party to each case. ESPNcricinfo understands this would then lead to the players being permitted to be paid by the BCCI for the 2011 season and beyond.

The Kochi Tuskers franchise refused to pay the 2011 salaries and this is from where the dispute originated. They were suspended for the 2012 edition of the tournament and the players were auctioned again. So for the year 2012,  no one is actually going to complain. However, the 2011 salaries need to be paid by the Tuskers franchise and it doesn't comes under the auction of 2012. Also, this is where the incompetency of BCCI is exposed. The pending salaries were scheduled to be paid immediately after the completion of IPL 2011. This was not done and the BCCI (which was under the Srinivasan/ Sharad Pawar mafia) refused to act when the players complained. The franchise was suspended almost 12 months after this incident. That is why I believe that the BCCI is responsible.

This would be intresting franchise greeting sued by players for not paying their salaries. Eventually the franchise will pay the due amount but for 10 years they were able to avoid those payments. Thanks to BCCI and incompetent members this was possible.

Looks like the BCCI had other important priorities. I am not a big fan of the BCCI. They are too greedy and never bother about the players or the sport itself. The players are just treated as money making machines, without any sort of respect. And IPL remains the cash cow of the BCCI. An estimate in one of the leading newspapers estimated that the BCCI makes $1 billion every year from the IPL. If they spent 0.1% of that amount, this issue could have been resolved and the players would not be facing bankruptcy.

BCCI always thinks about its own financial matters. Last year, just to make the IPL happen, they prevented the T20 World Cup from taking place. In the midst of such a horrible covid situation in India this year, they hosted the IPL. BCCI could have donated some money to the Government of India for this covid situation.

So you are telling that the players will spend further money and then sue for a franchise team that is no longer in existence and do you really think that even if they spend a huge number to the lawyers there is no way they are going to get the money back as that defunct team might even claim bankruptcy, BCCI should be responsible as they were in charge of everything and they should make sure everything is running smoothly.

There was a major change in the IPL leadership during that period when the creator was facing corruption and other charges and the BCCI withdrew the teams rights to be in the IPL but the owners went to court and won a case against he BCCI as far as i know and they are yet to compensate them for the loss.
Even i would agree that BCCI is responsible for the mess.

If I remember correctly, both the franchises (Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala) were removed by the BCCI after they failed to make the franchise fee for the year 2012. For Pune, the owner was jailed and the franchise was facing financial issues, while for Kochi there was a dispute among the owners. But the point to note here is that the franchises were suspended only in 2012, and the pending dues date back to 2011. And even after the suspension of the franchises, the BCCI did nothing to help the players.

@Sithara007 I’m not surprised by BCCI not wanting to help because they’re all about making money, and not giving money away even if it could help the player’s. Furthermore IPL is scheduled to finish in UAE in September, and this is a bold move because they’re risking Indian player’s right before the T20 World Cup begins.

A few days back, there was a statement from the ECB which made it clear that they will not make any adjustments to their schedule, in order to accomodate the IPL. Now this is going to create a lot of issues for the BCCI. What they are going to do now? Are they going to ask the ICC to postpone the T20 World Cup? I don't think that the ICC guys will be very excited with this. Because the World Cup was already postponed once, in order to accomodate IPL 2020. Also, should a franchise league be given a higher priority, when compared to a global event?

I do not think ICC would.postpone the Worldcup. This is an international event and one board cannot change the schedule. IPL has to be postponed further, the franchise will suffer but nothing can be done.

As you know that PSL is about to resume in early June in UAE but its the start of the summer in the Asia. The average temperature in this time of the  year is almost 45 degrees Celsius and this is too hot for the players. It will be really tough for the players to play in such hot conditions.

We cannot blame BCCI for the current pandemic situation. When the IPL started, the condition of covid-19 was not so worse as it is now in India. Nobody anticipated that covid-19 third wave would be so deadly in this part of the world. No tournament can take place in this pandemic whether it be IPL or T20 World cup.

You may have forgotten about last year's T20 World Cup. The BCCI indirectly tried their best not to host the T20 World Cup just to hold the IPL. And in the end, the T20 World Cup was not held because of covid 19. But at the same time the IPL was held and players from almost all countries of the world participated in the IPL.

Then who is to blame?
COVID did not end when BCCI was releasing the IPL schedule. There were numerous times when the Indian medical association was informing the government that a second wave might hit soon. Neither did the government nor the BCCI were interested. They simply went ahead without any plans and the  result is infront of everyone now.

One of the reasons was that Cricket Australia preferred to have the tournament in 2021 instead of 2020 (probably due to some inside deal with the BCCI). Actually this caused a lot of controversy, as the Australian government was in favor of conducting the tournament and the board was against the idea (normally it is the other way around in most of the countries). A very large number of Australian players take part in the IPL, and therefore for CA IPL is more important when compared to the world cup.
