I have a better squad expectation for Villarreal next year. I think they played very well until the semi-finals of the champions league this year. Let's say, it wasn't the catalans day for winning. Xavi's side lose in the final game, all credits go to the yellow submarine who hold off Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Despite Barca domination but failed to score in the game, it was embarrassing to them since they were home but couldn't help it. The Barcelona - Villarreal game was quite awkward to me actually. Because Barcelona took control of the game as most people expected and kept it that way until the final whistle too. But this still couldn't prevent Villarreal from reaching their goal in this game. Maybe they didn't find many goal opportunities but the ones they found were enough for a win as it seems. This 2-0 win was very crucial for Villarreal to maintain their position in the standings and join the Europa Conference League. Athletico Madrid played a 1-1 draw against Sevilla. The game was just a fair play between the both team, since Real Betis were lagging behind. The both teams have safely secured their place in the Champions League next season. While, Sevilla had a terrible season imo, Although, they ended at the 4th position. But their performance were unstable throughout the season.

However, Atletico won greatly yesterday against Real Sociedad. Despite, playing away, they were able to score 2 goals after ending the first half in scoreless draw. And ended the season in a decent position on the standings.

You did disagree just because they had Barcelona on the neck at the right time, I think Barcelona wasn't worried to fight them hard since they know that they already have what it takes to be in the second spot even if they lose their last league match and it was certain that Villareal needed that goal badly to maintain Europa conference League.
If it is not by management as you claimed, they should have used that way to climb the top 4 in the beginning but they were struggling throughout the season and it was clear that they didn't have the balls to do what other teams were doing.
