Your friend is not cursed, don't think of it like that. He just getting addicted to gambling maybe because he won once or twice then he had consecutive losses. By that, it keeps him to continue to gamble having his hopes that he will win again or at least get his losses back. Unfortunately I have witnessed a friend getting addicted to gambling and it is not pretty, your friend cannot solve this on his on tell him to look for professional help, just as there is an association like Alcoholics Anonymous there are probably associations with the sole purpose to help those with gambling addictions, I do not know if it is too late to get his family back but at least he should do everything that he can to get better and see his son again.

Sometimes that is what people need, a wake up call, to tell them they are on the wrong path and that they need to change their ways or they will lose that which they value the most which is their family, I am also glad his wife has decided to give him another chance since it will be a shame that a family gets separated over this, however your friend needs to understand that he really needs to change his ways or something like this may happen again and at that time his wife may not be as forgiving.
