so far fourteen participants, which is good, but only three of us put picks, there is plenty of time, but I like to put picks earlier and maybe change something later, to have worst result in the end

I have no idea what to put in at this moment. Waiting to find some time to do a bit of research but I already know it will be gut picks 5 minutes before the tournament starts in the end. Maybe even better to do it that way considering my usual luck when I try to be smart.

I am expecting maybe few more people to come in, but it wont be more than 20 in total probably.

Am i not reading this (tournament bracket) correctly or are they actually going to play back-to-back matches on the same pitch, as in, one game finishes and the next one starts/is being played on the same stadium an hour later?

Does anyone know what's the exact reason behind this? There is most likely a logical explanation for this, logistics being my guess, but nevertheless, this gonna hamper the quality of football played.

For example, the Limbe Stadium will host 8 matches 7 of which in the span of 10 days with 3 b2b.  , that pitch will be literally murdered.

Above is heavy sarcasm influenced by some dark stand up comedy I just watched. Not my actual stand towards Africa or covid. You have to explain everything on forum these days.

A bit more serious now. If that is true I am concerned about covid for real. Yeah the pitch will be destroyed but what about all the supporters mixing between the games and probably without sanitized chairs/toilets/everything. That is just disaster waiting to happen and stop the tournament 5 days after it starts with most virulent variant of covid yet in a country with probably quite low vaccination rate.

Has to be logistics, I guess, and I am reading it same as you. It is not like they are having a tournament in England where you have 10 stadiums in every bigger city capable of hosting a game. I don't know the situation in Africa but I doubt it is much better then in my Croatia for instance. We have let's say 1 modern stadium but only for 10k supporters and 2 "big ones" which would need serious works to bring them up to modern standards. The rest are even worse. You can build/refit something but not everything to stay in the budget and at least break even from organizing the competition.

Having written this I see I actually know very little about Africa so I am thinking I will have to visit in hopefully near future.

good catch,, i bet after 5 or 6 games that pitch is gonna look like this

hmm, a heavily damaged pitch could turn out to be a big disadvantage for those teams that are focussed on possession-based football,, now my question is which teams play possession football in the AFCON??

... but its not the competition I have a problem with its the timing of it. Surely, it would make more sense to the organisers, as well as for the fans to schedule it during the off season?

At the very least AFCON, and the Premier League need to work out some sort of compromise where the premier league schedules games around these competitions, and potentially has an international break. Though, an international break seems a little over kill for only a few players that do end up being impacted.

I agree that AFCON causes unfair advantage in some leagues, and it is probably most obvious if you are Liverpool supporter. I don't know what can be done with schedule to lessen the impact. I am not the expert for climate condition in Africa but I sort of think that it would be unplayable due to high temperatures if the tournament gets pushed to summer (same time as Euro/WC).

We only have rainy and dry seasons in Africa, and both are suitable for football games, but we will not modify our calendar to accommodate some of our players who are playing elsewhere! No way! We set our date to accommodate all the leagues in Africa. It would make no sense if all tournaments were held at the same time and no club had the authority to excuse a player from international duty unless specifically specified in their contract agreement.

You must be silly to ask such a question have you seen Egypt, Algeria, Moroccoo, Nigeria, Tunisia and some other countries too numerous to mention play? The monument is hosted at a country with standard stadiums I have no idea what you are talking about mate

I can't wait to see the opening match that will take place in Cameroon tomorrow. Cameroon will not take it easy with Burkina Faso because they are the one hosting the cup. The tournament will start tomorrow and many teams and are very ready to be part of this tournament many people have been waiting to see.
It is too early to predict the winner for this tournament because most of the team has never show up their strategies for the world to know what to predict.

The average rainfall in most region and nature of pitches are not suitable for football.

Another completely false statement! The said date isn't even convenient for national leagues in Africa, majority of the Africa leagues are on right and will be through the course of the tournament, while some teams will also lose their best players, what then is the reason for the divided publicity ?

not sure about this AFCON, but actually I was involved (professionally) in AFCON Gabon 2012, and they have built new stadiums for that tournament, four, if I am not wrong, and Olympic village for teams to be settled

since Cameroon is bigger and stronger country than Gabon (it is a personal opinion), they have certainly built some new stadiums as well, if I am not wrong they should have hosted 2019, then gave up or something, and took 2021 from Ivory Coast, so Ivory Coast will took 2023 instead and so on, not sure how many AFCON's in the line know their hosts

Yes, they have one of the best squads in the competition because most of the players play in Europe and have a lot of experience; the world is expecting a lot from them. Unfortunately, Ighalo and Osimmeh did not make the list for various reasons, but the squad is still balanced. I'm hoping the new coach brings some good fortune. That's... really unlucky for the last teams to play I guess! Got good memories of playing football in Africa... not good for my body at all, as I suffered some of the worst injuries in my short footballing life on their incredibly brutal pitches haha. They are typically hard and dry and full of sharp stones (East Africa anyway).

Got good memories of playing football in Africa... not good for my body at all, as I suffered some of the worst injuries in my short footballing life on their incredibly brutal pitches haha. They are typically hard and dry and full of sharp stones (East Africa anyway).

Lol. I had no idea you had some Africa grassroots football experience I bet you didn't play during the hamattan season that was the worst season for a football you would need more than two lungs to survive, my football career didn't end well I started as a goalkeeper diving on those strong grasses wasn't easy but I ended my local football career as a defender my hope of playing a broad ended 10 years ago when I twisted my angles I was just too aggressive in my game

If you survive on African field you can survive anywhere in the world.
