If you watched the World Cup, you won’t be asking why Messi name is in top 10 and 5. Messi was literally the player to watch. He performed better than almost all the younger players in the list tonight. The only reason we are not having Messi as the winner of the ballon d’Or is just the fact that Argentina didn’t win the World Cup. If they had won it, we would have been having a different conversation by now.

You’re allowing your love for Messi influence your choice of who was supposed to win this year ballon d’or. Of course Messi performed last season, but not close to majority on that list. And you know the award is based on overall performance throughout the season. IMO Messi should not even be on the list because he as won it multiple times. Maybe that is why he didn’t attend. Let the competition be among the young players.

The only reason Mbappe did not win is because his previous season was trophyless, if not he would have been a strong contender against Kane. Lionel Messi excellent performance is not only witnessed in the last world cup but also in the MLS where he plays for Inter Miami. If you watch him in the MLS you will see that his performance there is even better than what he did at the world cup. The only reason why Messi is not considered a potential Balloon d'Or winner is because he plays in a league that is not popular like the top European leagues. I argue what you said that if Argentina had won the world cup that Lionel Messi would have won the Ballon d'or, he wouldn't have won the award but he would have won the best player in the world cup.

It's a fair table. Kane totally deserved to win the trophy, I don't think Mbappé or Yamal actually had a chance since the French didn't win the World Cup and Yamal's performance was just ok. The news now is that Messi is ranked 5th(!?); though he’s been in that position from the start, or at least that was the projection. It’s a subtle, quiet gesture by the journalists to include him on the list; a sort of parting pat on the back for a man who serves as a benchmark for everyone else on that list.

Harry Kane’s award is well-deserved; regardless of how the World Cup might have turned out (even if France had won) a World Cup always creates these additional expectations surrounding certain winners or losers. As long as Lamine Yamal did not win the ballon d'Or, it's very understandable and transparent. I feel for Kylian Mbappe but going without a title for the season was his biggest limitations which was why he lost out. Harry Kane is living a dream that looked impossible even at 30 years but here he is, 3 years later holding a Balon d'Or award. Team greatly matters. There are many good players who waste their entire career in a bad team with no achievement to their name.

Harry Kane's former team mate, Son has also suffered such set back, going without title with all his talents.

This is going to be the story of someone like Bruno Fernandez of Manchester United. He needs to leave that team and go to where he will be recognised. Finally, they have tried to be fair in this as they did last season. Both Mbappe and Yamal know that they will not win from the last three days when speculations started coming on votes online that Kane has 70% vote, they all reduced their expectations which is fine. Now both of them can try again next season because it’s their time, one of them have to win the award next season because they have started performing well in their respective league games and the Champions League as well, I wish no serious contender will come again because that’s how think that it will definitely be within these two players when Dembele was given the award last year.

As I mentioned a few minutes ago, Ballon D’or is full of surprises, but Harry Kane? Well congratulations to him for his first trophy of this kind. Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with their choice here, even Harry Kane himself is surprised how he got the most votes.

I agree that winning trophies in a team or perform in one league only isn’t enough to make you win, but Yamal or Mbappe both are great players, played better, gave their teams additional opportunities and lead to winning important matches.

Yeah it's quite surprising finally the rightful winner has been crowned, and not one of FIFA's darlings. I mean there have been several "leaked" results in the past days, obviously all fakes.
