as the community's designated marketing person, it is on behalf of the community that he is making these decisions.

I would say he should be working for the community, putting the communities wishes into action.

Quote
Now I think a lot of people have an opinion on the name because it is easy to have one. Its not like debating about the merits of one type of algorithm over another, a name, now everybody can debate that endlessly. So they do, accomplishing nothing.

Accomplishing nothing? The name is the first point of contact for users, it dictates your search engine strategy, it's what identifies the product to the customer. Mainstream businesses spend millions researching names to accomplish nothing do they?

Quote
Was it my imagination, or wasnt there a lot of complaints about the name?

No, it wasn't your imagination, but your memory fails you - there was also a lot of support for the name. Look at the fucking poll to see what people genuinely think.

Quote
From a marketing standpoint it is hard to sell a child's cereal/toy as a crypto currency.

Well, thank god we're not in the cereal/toy business. What does this even mean? Do you keep accidentally finding Raspberry Pi's in your fruit and veg aisle? Maybe you keep picking up a citrus fruit instead of your phone?

Quote
Now it really doesnt matter what the name is, we all agree the tech is what is important. So, why all the fuss all of a sudden?

I've blown the "name doesn't matter" argument out the water so many times it's boring. Why not just call it garbagecoin or shitonyourpillowcoin?

There is also a fuss about the way the vote has been rigged, it seems 60% of the community have no voice. I think this is important.

Quote
where are the suggestions for others?

I'm suggesting Boolberry....... I thought I had made that clear.

Quote
Maybe the name matters, maybe it doesnt,

A few sentences ago, you were so certain... what happened?

Quote
but debating endlessly about the name change is not going to help anything.

Then lets have a fair vote, problem solved.

Quote
Does the community want to support windjc or not? This is what I want to know.

We'd all like an answer to this question James, it's not exclusive to you.

Are you part of the cabal?

Was it my imagination, or wasnt there a lot of complaints about the name?

As I pointed out a few pages back the complaints about the name declined over time and essentially stopped once the price stopped dropping.

If the rename had been proposed 2-3 months ago I'm sure the response would have been quite different.

Ok, I for one will continue to support boolberry or whatever in the future, I believe that zoidberg is a very capable and a great developer, I hope that whatever is done, is thinking of the good of the coin and the community .
exactly!

now we have windjc who is a pretty big deal in his own right, so let's give him some discretion and give him some time to achieve results. Marketing does take a bit of time.

now this coin will succeed even if its called zoidberry, so I wouldnt worry about any problems with any new name

As a dev for XMR, maybe it is best if you abstained from this discussion?
it just seems a bit strange you are one of the most vocal critics against this

I think jwinterm's point is valid, though we would all do well to minimize the sarcasm and at least stay respectful and polite. We can all have opinions and shouldn't be attacked for our other projects.

AFAIK everyone here has some BBR and is interested in the project.

Regarding me being a vocal critic, I've said several times (maybe James hasn't been following all the posts) that I favor the name change, just found the process off putting. That I happen to be the one saying this is irrelevant because clearly others feel the same way.

EDIT: that said, I think James's point about my presence being potentially inflammatory is valid, so I will step out until things cool down a bit. Anyone who wants my opinion on something can PM and ask me.

This really has gone to shit.

A fair vote is the only way forward and quickly.

Many alternative voting systems have been proffered, all met by a deafening silence from the powers that be - why?

cabal?

when does doing anything by polls get good results?

I suggested to make the name just "BBR", but the question is if anybody other than windjc will be leading the marketing. To my knowledge there is nobody else.

If windjc is leading the marketing effort, then it would seem he is able to just dictate the name, but he is asking for input on the choice of new name. not whether to keep the old name or not.

should we have polls and decide everything based on the most votes?

James

Taking an argument to the point of absurdity is not what I would expect from you James.

This isn't just some little change, it is a big change with consequences.

I'll ask you again, why do companies spend millions on branding if it doesn't matter?

yes it is a big change, so for such a thing we should defer to a poll result?
branding matters and I prefer to have a person decide on such things instead of a poll.
if the poll is followed will we then run a branding campaign using polls? who will do the the work? you?

Then lets vote by donation, your a rich man, you could top any bid we could muster. Is there a problem with that?

I'm not sure being a large investor entitles you to attempt to censor other investors though, what do you think?

I'm sussex, I'm the one you think has a problem.

I dont want to censor anybody.

I just want to make sure there is someone that is actively marketing BBR. windjc hasnt said that he wouldnt market it without a name change, but if the community is rejecting his name change plan then it would be natural for him to not really feel supported by the community and not want to be spending time on marketing BBR. Human nature I do understand.

So, what investors out there want to snub windjc and then find somebody else to volunteer to market BBR? Since there dont seem to be any other volunteers, the choice is to support windjc or make some donations to hire a marketer.

This is a pragmatic thing I am talking about. volunteer marketers are not exactly growing on trees.

If this 60% majority will volunteer to spend time actively marketing BBR, then let us listen to this majority. However if it is just 60% of the people who are armchair marketing, then I would rather listen to the 1 guy who is volunteering to put in the hours.

Who is willing to spend at least 10 hours per week marketing BBR? Preferably 20+ hours per week.

How does windjc feel supported if the vote is rigged and he has seen the 60% result on the other poll? How could he not know that the result was false?

On the other hand, if he had majority support by continuing with boolberry why would he feel unsupported?

Your argument is senseless.

The way forward is a fair vote, I would abide by any result, I would have no choice.

I find it hard to believe that a seasoned marketing guy would come up with any of the offerings in the official poll, but especially Rune. It is so generic, so cliched, so baggage-laden and so vapid as to be beyond appalling. I don't like it.

Anyway, that sums it up, sort of, perhaps we should leave each other (and this thread) in peace and let the grown ups talk  Wink
