It's an alternative way of distributing the coins compared to mining only. The coins have to enter the market one way or another (for any coin). The more popular ones like Bitcoin and Litecoin does that through mining only. Startcoin does that through 50% mining and 50% based on participation in the ecosystem and holding the coin on StartJoin. If you don't like that then StartCoin is not for you. I think it's a more fair way of doing it since real world use of a coin is what ultimately gives it value. Startcoin is the currency of crowdfunding, and real world use is the main purpose as opposed to 95%+ of the other coins around.
