undervolt and underclock is good...but I like to take shots at new coins not just beat the dead horse of btc but grab a startup 256 coin quick and hope it pays off.
some will some wont but faster ghz at start = more block found :>) mining arbit coin rt now solo and have found 4 blocks in a few hours:>)
but yes I agree not much time foe btc mining and I run .11 per Kw....but I bought a solar panel and plan to get system totally off grid to run from sun!

i think you are beating a dead horse here..

these s3s are near the end of life.
at .10c per KWH you have until 65b difficulty before they start costing more than they make. its not that far away..

what needs to be found is a way to undervolt and underclock them.

I mine for hobby, not profit, so the S3+ is a great machine for me.  It's quiet and uses less power than my S1.

I would love to see ur  vim /usr/lib/lua/luci/model/cbi/cgminer/cgminer.lua  file to make sure of my ##'s

I can only get burst of Oc's for 10-15 min's then the bottom drops out and it goes down to 200-360 range no good but still stable at 218 @ 430 GH/s

I'm missing something!

I added the #s from here, but the only freq I run is 250: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=699064.msg8370071#msg8370071

Here are highlighted in red the lines with new frequency not included in the stock firmware.

Hello,

one of my Antminer S3 control PBC is fried. Red LED is blinking constantly and the miner is not accessible via Ethernet. Reset button is not working anymore.

Where can I send the board for repairs? How much would it cost to order a new board? I am located in Germany.

I paid for a replacement once, but wish I would have tried a few thing's.   I suggest looking into serial connection over usb - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=889206.0 is one example.  It is possible you might be able to recover it.

If you cannot recover it contact Bitmain Support and ask to buy a replacement.  I know I did this long ago and they got it to me quick.  It was out of warranty so I paid for the part.

Thanks I have ordered usb to serial/TTL converter and will try this method out. Bitmain is asking for 30€ for a replacement. You have to send them the defective pbc.

Nope, I have only tried the 10 second x 3 min method.

So I guess I have to power it and let it blink red for 3 minutes then press the reset for 90 seconds?

It should be:

Factory Default RESET Button

Please let the Antminer S3 powered up and running for about 3 minutes, then use a paper clip or something thin to press a button inside this hole on the "RIGHT" hand side of the Ethernet cable connector.  Press and Hold the Button for about 10 seconds, let it so, wait for 3 minutes, then Press the Resett Button 1 more time.  Please wait for 3 minutes, then turn the power off and power it back on.

I think your doing it right.  The main thing is giving it time after the reset to go back.  But if it's faulty you could try this all day and it will not recover.

Yes that's exactly what I do. No problems with my other s3 when resetting.

I just depress the reset while powering on, keeping it depressed 90 seconds, release the button and power down, wait 45 seconds then power up and I find the default stuff.

I upgraded to the latest firmware and now the second fan speed no longer shows up in the Bitmain or M's monitor GUI.

Is this common and is there a fix?

I occasionally get such bugs. Sometimes the temperature line disappears. You can try another firmware, but I think you are good that way as well.

You can also install the firmware without keeping your settings, or reset the miner.

Moebius is very correct. Since you had it before that leads me to think it's software not hardware (I'm assuming fan still spins).  You could take a stab at installing firmware again to see if that fixes it.  That is best bet.

I personally would leave it as long as it has one.  That gives you temp which is most important thing.  You want it to shutdown if it reaches extreme heat.  I had one like this once and had no issues as long as there is one temp gauge still going.

Thanks guys. Both fans are running and I'm still able to monitor both temperatures so I'm going to leave as is. Just curious to see if others had same problem and if there was an easy fix.

The only reason I changed the firmware is because I had a bad controller and put in an S1 controller board (with conversion board) and needed the S3 firmware to hash. I did load firmware without carrying over settings and have rebooted a few times. I'm not going to worry about it and will leave alone since it's otherwise working great.

Yes. You can put 2 on each. I've been doing for a while without any problems.

Each one should use around: 340 Watt at the wall

Depending on frequencies it could very but at two around 680 watts on default so should be well within range.  And with RM850 its a nice power supply.  So should be no problems at all.  I think you will like the RM series.  One say it's a gimmick but I like how they are able to run quiet depending on settings.

you have to be careful on how the plugs are.. some psus will have no problems supplying power to 2 s3s, or even 3.. but you may run into a problem like i had Sad

i was running 2 S3s off of ONE Seasonic x850 PSU.. there was no problems with the watts.. the problems was it has 4 PCI-E plugs with 2 ends each and i had all 8 plugged into the s3s..
this was the result.

im now running 2 off a rosewill lightning 1300 and one off the 850.

even tho the rosewill 1300 can do all 3, there is only 8 pci-e plugs.. so you are 4 short. (2 of the pci-e plugs have 2 each, so this is also an issue)

Normally when it burns up like that there is a psu problem, but you do have what should be a quality brand.  How long have you been running them on there?  What freq were they at?  What is ambient temp like?

Hope miner side looks good.  Don't see a pick of  it.  But I would use a psu tester if you have one. If not talk to seasonic and see if they RMA or just send a cord.
