As far as heating with it - that would not work very well, unlike GPU's FPGA's do not put off a lot of heat Depends on how many you have running... It can get pretty hot in my garage :-)) It's a big improvement compared to the GPU's tough, you're right about that.

Have you identified other uses for the ModMiner quad? I have actually had people buy these already for uses other than with Bitcoin mining, mostly for their own hobbyist/academic uses. Basically with this configuration you could change the firmware and make it do pretty much anything you wanted, anything that any other FPGA could do. It could certainly act as a open FPGA development platform for whatever, the sky's the limit. The ModMiner quad also has a resale value outside of the Bitcoin world for these purposes or just for the value of the four Spartan-6 XC6SLX150-2FGG484C FPGA Chips themselves as they do have a resell value. One interesting thing I have been reading about is they are bringing OpenCL to FPGA in the near future which opens up a lot more possibilities. As far as heating with it - that would not work very well, unlike GPU's FPGA's do not put off a lot of heat Would it be possible to bring litecoin mining to the ModMiner?

Would it be possible to bring litecoin mining to the ModMiner? What would be the payoff period for litecoin mining?

I read somwhere that Mining for Lite coin needs massive amounts of RAM (scrypt) to be effective. Spartan Boards of These Kind doesnt have this (Ztex, modminer, bfl)....

At least on GPUs, you can't underclock your RAM to get any decent numbers for scrypt.

no current FPGA mining hardware supports litecoin mining because there are no external memory on them.

I encourage everyone and anyone who is running a ModMiner Quad in linux to download the latest BFGMiner from the Git source you can download it from https://github.com/luke-jr/bfgminer/zipball/bfgminerWe made some changes to the way it clocks the FPGA chips and are seeing some increased performance and stability Also many customers will receive tracking numbers over the course of today and tomorrow if you dont receive a tracking number by Wed the 29th its likely your order will be in the next production run which is starting this week and will be shipping again next week.

its an official release now (thanks Luke-Jr) Everyone should upgrade their mining software to the latest version of BFGMiner, the new clocking algorithm is much better and you should see better performance and stability. Latest release: 2.7.5 ( announcement & changes) Features:- A variety of device drivers for Bitcoin (SHA256d):
- Scrypt mining support for both CPU and OpenCL (GPU)
- Very low overhead free C code for Linux and Windows with very low CPU usage
- Long poll support - will use longpoll from any pool if primary pool does not support it
- epoll support for interrupting FPGA waiting when new work is available without timeout-looping
- Self detection of new blocks with a mini-database for slow/failing longpoll scenarios, maximum work efficiency and minimum rejects
- Heavily threaded code hands out work retrieval and work submission to separate threads to not hinder devices working
- Caching of submissions during transient network outages
- Preemptive fetching of work prior to completion of current work
- Local generation of more valid work (rollntime) whenever possible, as supported on a per-work item basis
- Prevention of stale work submission on new block (submitold also supported)
- Automatically detects failing pools and disables them
- Multi-device support (all or discrete selection)
- Summarised and discrete device data statistics of requests, accepts, rejects, hw errors, efficiency and utility
- Watchdog thread to restart idle threads but not crash machine if they don't respond
- Summary displayed when quitting
- Supports multiple pools with multiple intelligent failover mechanisms
- On the fly menu based management of most settings
- Trickling of extra work to backup pools if primary pool is responding but slow
- On the fly enabling/disable/restarting of devices
- Device temperature monitoring (for devices that support it)
- Reuses persistent connections when possible
- RPC +/- JSON interface for remote control
- Ability to cope with slow routers
- X-Reject-Reason support
- Lots of other stuff I can't remember. See options.

On your wiki, http://wiki.btcfpga.com/index.php?title=Software, there is a link to BFGMiner compiled for the raspberry pi. Is this the only version for the pi or can the latest version work too?

Yes you can use the latest version of BFG and I would recommend it if you don't mind compiling it yourself I was just providing a binary which I really need to update.

Hi, I ordered one modminer quad on the 8th of August, I didn't receive a shipment notice so far. Also I have something in mind that you guaranteed a 4 weeks maximum incl. shipment or otherwise I am entitled for a 100$ discount? How does that work? I payed with credit card, I never made a charge back so far but I guess it will get more and more difficult after a certain time, so I get a little nervous here. Also your communications - I asked twice for the measurement of the screw holes to build myself a housing, no answer. I also asked if you use any of the 5V on the molex connector because I am thinking of another more efficient 12V only power supply.
My order number is 181, please inform me of
*ETA *discount *screw hole measurement / 5V of the molex
Thank you

I am sorry if I did not email you back I had forwarded your email to my hardware guy so he could answer your specific technical questions but your email must of gotten lost in the shuffle some place, usually my email responses are very quick. Your order will be shipping after I receive this next production run on 09/06 as far as the discount I am sorry but we discontinued that in the beginning of July I will get your technical questions answered right away. thank you for your business -Tom

Thanks for your swift reply, especially considering it's Saturday. Regarding the discount I believe it was still on your website at the date I ordered, please double check that. This lets me feel tricked at the moment... Did you give notice here on the forum somewhere? Of course I didn't deem it necessary to make a hard copy of your site, I'm a trusting guy basically. usually my email responses are very quick.
I sent an e-mail Aug 23 and have yet to get a response. (regarding order 215) I figure i'm in the next production run from this thread, but not getting an e-mail reply definitely concerned me.

Anyone that currently has an order in will get their units in this next production run (unless I have personally told you otherwise) As far as not responding to emails, there are dozens of customers who can testify to the fact that I respond to most emails in the same day, I apologize if your email from the 23rd did not get a reply, it likely got buried in a pile of emails which is bound to happen eventually - if you dont get an email reply and you are concerned for whatever reason there are several ways to get a hold of me right away. You can (a) call 315-514-0269 (or text) (b) PM me on the forum - you will definitely get a response in 1-2 days (c) catch me on freenode irc network #btcfpga (I am there every day during working hours) I am very active on this forum / IRC and very easy to get a hold of so please do not let an email going by for a week without a response cause you for concern, ive been an active member of this forum since April of 2011 and I am not going anywhere!

Fair enough, Tom. I think "definitely concerned" was a little strong, I wasn't worried about you stiffing me or anything, I just was disappointed that my e-mail got lost.
