1021  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Strongcoin.com owner stole user money - are my Bitcoins safe online? on: April 23, 2013, 06:26:11 PM
Well, you got a point there actually. What happened to this? :

Quote
What is a hybrid wallet ?
A hybrid wallet allows you to send and receive Bitcoins just like any other wallet. However, the Bitcoin private key which is required to send money is encrypted in your browser before it reaches our servers.

Therefore our servers only hold encrypted private keys and neither we nor anyone else can spend your Bitcoins. Only you.

Please do not use any online wallets if you value your coins. If strong coin.com was rooted, funds would be stolen easily from users despite that statement above.
That's a blatant lie from Strongcoin then, unless not all of their wallets are hybrid wallets.

1023  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] FirstbitsRepo.com - Win 1 BTC Promotion! on: April 23, 2013, 04:17:08 PM
Per John's recommendation, I now offer split-key custom address generation!  I offer up to 9 characters of generation.  If you want 10 characters, go contact Cray.  Wink

1024  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Just got my cards in the mail! on: April 22, 2013, 10:29:53 PM
Two 7850.

I am getting 250 mhash out of the asus and 280 mhash out of the gigabyte.

wow I paid about the same as a 7850 today, for a 5850 (?) years ago and they get 380mhash.... has technology gone backwards?
Relative to Bitcoin mining, yes.  A 7850 is about 61% faster for gaming than a 5850 though.
1025  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The good news is that MtGox is pretty much dying. on: April 22, 2013, 06:17:12 PM
MtGox and Bitfloor were my "go to" exchanges.  What else is out there that deals with easy USD deposits/withdrawals?
1026  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Who here regrets not ordering a BFL unit? on: April 22, 2013, 04:04:07 PM
@OP - I regret not buying more of them.  Smiley

Thought about buying one of their units, but after doing some basic research, I'm 99.9999999% sure they're scamers.
Want to bet on that?  1 BTC of mine against 10 BTC of yours?  You should be more than willing to take such a bet if you are 99.9999999% sure.
1027  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] FirstbitsRepo.com - Win 1 BTC Promotion! on: April 22, 2013, 03:57:34 PM
Registered, but I would still recommend you turn this to a split-key vanity addresses scheme.
Thanks for the feedback.  I figure if people are willing to trust Casascius coins and online companies to hold their Bitcoins, why not me?  But time will tell.  I would very much like to do split-key vanity address generation on demand though, so I will start looking at adding that as a feature.

Looks interesting. Is there any runner up prizes after the 1BTC promotion?
Just the one prize for now.  I'm not BTC-rich, so I can only afford to give away so much...!
1028  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] FirstbitsRepo.com - Win 1 BTC Promotion! on: April 22, 2013, 03:42:19 PM
I will most certainly notify whoever wins!
1029  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] FirstbitsRepo.com - Win 1 BTC Promotion! on: April 22, 2013, 03:13:58 PM
What about split-key vanity addresses? Find a trusted escrower, then both of you will have to collaborate for any coins to be stolen. Obviously won't work on firstbits you already generated.

See: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=84569.0
It is a good idea!  This option didn't exist when I generated these addresses, but it has potential and I would love to also implement that as an option for vanity addresses on request.  Maybe to come in the short future...!

Sell a Vanity Address->Get BTC->Youknow the private key->take all the coins in it away->Profit

Anyway i am in the raffle

You know, this is why I hesitated to sell these keys for a couple of years.  But then, Casascius has the same issue of trust, and people trust him with 11 million dollars worth of coins!  Certainly, I don't expect everyone to immediately trust me, and I fully expect that some people will never trust me, but I am not out to steal anyone's coins, my name and address is public information, and I hope to build up trust over time.  I absolutely suggest that no one keep any significant amount of coins in their addresses, but that they use a sweeper to immediately withdraw the coins from those addresses into other addresses they know are only controlled by them.

Thanks for the feedback, and for entering!  Note that you do not need to post your first/last name from your account, you only need to make sure that your Bitcointalk.org name on your firstbitsrepo.com account matches with your forum name here.  I will take the list of registration names and compare with the list of names of people who have posted in this thread to verify.

I have registered and my account name looks like my name , It's Mithat Can Ozdemir , but I don't know why that is a public knowledge since the purpose of cyrpto is staying anon.
Sorry, my directions must have been confusing.  There is no need to post information about your account here - you only need to post that you have registered, and make sure your bitcointalk.org username is in your Account Information at firstbitsrepo.com.

Win 1 BTC Promotion - Promotion ended, thanks for joining in!

I am holding a 1 BTC drawing!  Simply register an account at firstbitsrepo.com, fill in your bitcointalk.org username in the Account Information page at firstbitsrepo.com, and then post in this thread stating that you registered (no need to post any information about your account here).  The drawing will be in two weeks, on May 5th.  Good luck!
1032  Economy / Service Announcements / FirstbitsRepo.com - Premium firstbits address such as 1sexy, 1stud, 1champ, etc on: April 21, 2013, 06:02:40 AM
I am very happy to announce the launch of my web store, FirstbitsRepo.com

Essentially, the web store sells securely delivered Bitcoin private keys for premium firstbits addresses, such as 1admin, 1music, 1sexy, etc.  We also now sell custom 2-factor address generation (you don't have to trust us with your generated private keys!).

To answer some questions and concerns that I know people will be wondering right off the bat:
- The keys were generated offline, and will not touch an online computer unless encrypted.
- Only my wife and myself have access to the private keys.
- This requires no greater trust than that of the beloved Casascius coins, and I aim to continue my reputation as an honest individual.
- The private keys are deleted after customers give us confirmation that they have successfully received them.
- An open source address sweeper is currently in development (not by me, but I paid the bounty to make it happen) to immediately sweep arriving funds to a different address, for those who want to rely on as little trust as possible.
- Private keys are typically delivered via GPG or 7-zip, but we can work to add additional delivery methods as well.

More FAQs are answered here:  http://firstbitsrepo.com/index.php/faq

If you find bad text, a bug, or any sort of exploit, please contact me. I am willing to pay 0.1 to 1.0 BTC, depending on severity.  While customer private keys will never be at risk of exposure, some parts of the website might be exploitable without me knowing.  I would like to avoid this.  The backend is Magento 1.7.0.2 with the bitpay plugin and a couple other minor extensions.

FirstbitsRepo.com's PGP key is listed on MIT's key server:  http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=vindex&search=0x57D252B1958FF408
Bitmessage address is the same as is listed in my signature, BM-onLajozPiQ8NrfXfzx42gsSYYBdhz6T6V
Email address is sales@firstbitsrepo.com

Coupon codes!
PHY99 - 99% off one item.  (5 uses)
PHY50 - 50% off entire cart. (10 uses)

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask away.  I'll probably be lengthening this OP as questions are asked, etc.
1033  Economy / Gambling / Re: 280 BTC total bets between Micon and mrb (are BFL ASICs real?) on: April 21, 2013, 05:35:36 AM
http://codinginmysleep.com/bfl-jalapeno-unboxing-and-demo/

We may have one down with two to go. I'm not sure If David paid for his unit so he may not qualify as a customer. I'll try to get that info from him. If he's been been to BFL, let me know. BTCguild shows 5.5 gh/s avg but David states it is fluctuating from 4.5 to 5.5 on bfgminer so we can avg at 5gh/s. Also this is measured with killawatt after powerbrick so draw should actually be lower. In any case, 5 gh/s at 30.2 brings us to:

165.56 mh/j

I heard that the two developers they shipped to were customers, but certainly that should be verified.
1034  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Wanted - Programmer for 2 new alt-coins on: April 19, 2013, 11:29:43 PM
I've thought about doing exactly this for gold or dollars for quite a while.  I always bumped into a few problems I could not solve:

- What happens if my main wallet gets hacked, stolen, or otherwise compromised?  Some method of reversing transactions would have to be available for such cases.  But then, what happens if a hacker gains access to the method of reversing transactions?  The whole idea breaks down.
- For gold, I would have to pay to have the gold stored securely.  How would I be able to fund this?
- For dollars, I would have to register as a MSB/MT, would have to keep full AML/KYC records.  It would be expensive.  I could potentially hope to fund this expense with investment income on the dollars I received, but then people would be less likely to trust the whole thing if I was actively investing the money they gave me.

1036  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Teresa is going to get a visit from the IRS on: April 19, 2013, 08:56:50 PM

I'm sure it is based on tax law.  The IRS isn't going to go writing up guides on taxation that doesn't match the laws that are in place.

LOL...uh-huh...

I think you need to learn the difference between corporate policy and LAW. McDonalds can tell its franchises that they need to sell the new McBarf sandwich and put a sticker for it in the window (policy), but that doesn't make it a law.

But now we're getting into how the government actually works, which isn't understood by those who got indoctrinated in public school with fantasies about the Constitution and founding fathers.

My suggestion is to grab a copy of a book called "Cracking the Code, 3rd ed" and read it twice.
The IRS isn't a corporate entity, as far as I am aware.  Also, as far as I am aware, they are the ones to enforce laws with regards to taxation.

Again, the IRS isn't going to go writing up guides on taxation that do not match the laws that are in place.  If you think they will, then feel free to prove me wrong.
1037  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Selling on eBay sucks on: April 19, 2013, 06:24:54 PM
I've been an ebay member since 1999 and I don't remember ebay sucking this much years ago.

I recently sold a bunch of stuff and had one guy claim he didn't receive the item.  Since there was no delivery confirmation or tracking # ebay (paypal) by default just goes ahead and refunds him in full, with funds from my account.  What boils my blood is it's clear as day by reading his feedback that he's scammed countless others.  Yet ebay still fucks honest sellers like myself in the ass.

Scammers aside, in the early days of eBay you knew EXACTLY what your fees were for listing and selling items.  Now these crooks have deliberately made it difficult to see the fees so you get the illusion that your sale is pure profit.  Not even close to being true.

Starting off with your final value fee at 10%, ebay's cut on a $100 sale is $10.  Then these crooks "double dip" on your sale because everybody uses paypal, to the tune of 4 or 5%.  So your $100 sale now becomes $85 profit for you.

But wait, there's more.

You need to ship your item, and the post office needs to make money too, right?  They charge their outrageous prices to ship your item, which seems to be increasing each year at an astronomical rate.

So when all is said and done your profit goes down the toilet, assuming you were lucky enough to not have a scammer win your auction.

So what are our options?  Amazon?  Place your trust in somebody you don't know for a bitcoin sale?  Deal with idiots on craigslist who just want to waste your time with low-ball offers?
It's awful.  I sold a Casascius coin on eBay for $866.  eBay took their cut of $89.  Paypal took their cut of $26.  USPS took their cut of $22 (insured priority mail).  All said and done, I only got $729 from selling an item for $866...

Hey this sounds really bad.

This is exactly why I'm building my site flibbr.com.
Please go right ahead and create an account ~ I'll email you on the next release when something worth while is looking at.

A cryptocurrency alternative to ebay.
What does your site solve that bitmit doesn't already?  I like that you're competing with them, but make sure you offer MORE than they do!
1038  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Free Bitcoins for playing Minecraft (The Minecraft Faucet) on: April 19, 2013, 05:30:13 PM
Is this still going on?
Absolutely!

EDIT:  Updated the OP with new payout information.

Do you have and schedule for maps change?
No set schedule, but we try to keep maps as long as possible.  I hate losing work as much as the rest of the players do.  We're switching two of the maps to new ones soon, but they have been on the server for more than a year.

1040  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BFL 5 GH/s Miner Demo - Apr18 on: April 19, 2013, 04:41:32 PM
By the time you get this: july/august you will have a difficulty rate of 40-50million.
Assuming we have the value of bitcoin around 100$ and a diffculty of 50million while mining at 5 GH/s the revenue would be 150$ a month.
Add up power costs, and it makes it almost obsolete..
Huh?  $150/month is BAD for a product that only costs $274?  What kind of planet do you live on?  Huh
Why didn't you read the last part:"add up power costs".
So in the first month you would earn 100$, then with the increasing difficulty next month even less ect.
If you think getting $ back for your 274$ investment in 3-4+ months is good, go ahead.
Yeah, 36 watts... that'd be a whopping $2.07 in power costs.  That's why I didn't bother saying anything about power.

I think getting 100% back on ANY investment in 3-4 months is a FANTASTIC deal.  Heck, getting 100% back on any investment in 8-10 years is fairly standard in the investment world!

Like I said, what kind of planet do you live on?  Do you truly have better investments to put your money in?  If so, tell me where so I can sign up!
Well, my bad there, I didn't know the exact power it will be using.
Anyways getting back 300$ in 3-4 months and not earning anything is a good investment? lol then Smiley
Just saying if they had released it when they should have, things would be much different and a lot of money would have been made from it already.
Far from "not earning anything".  You could say the same about an investment real estate property... buy it, and for 10 years (at least), you're only paying off the purchase price.  Do you say that it's a bad deal?  Only if you know nothing about investing.  Obviously, once you have recovered the original purchase price, you then have a valuable asset + income from that asset.  Same with a 5 GH/s miner after 3-4 months.  You then have a valuable asset + further income from that asset.

Of course they would have mined more coins if they had been released earlier.  That's kind of a given.  What's your point?
