1081  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Prosecution to use Caroline Ellison notes as evidence against SBF on: November 03, 2023, 10:57:57 AM
https://crypto.news/lawyer-expects-around-20-years-of-jail-time-for-sam-bankman-fried/
Bankman-Fried could face 15 to 20 years of jail time
"If the jury convicts Bankman-Fried, the judge will be responsible for deciding the duration of his sentence, according to Lesperance. He says the sentencing will hinge on the specific charges for which he is found guilty and the relevant sentencing guidelines.

Furthermore, the judge will take into account the fact that Bankman-Fried has no prior criminal record. The sum of money involved in the alleged wrongdoings is another vital aspect that will be considered, Lesperance says.
“If the U.S. Justice Department feels that any U.S. politicians on either side of the aisle have committed either campaign finance violations or honest services fraud (i.e. a scheme to defraud another of the intangible right to honest services through a scheme to violate a fiduciary duty by bribery or kickbacks), then we might see future indictments.”

“In reality, with US federal charges he would serve only 85% of that time […] being to 12.75 to 17 years. Given that SBF is currently 31, he could be out in his mid to late 40s.”

David Lesperance, managing director at Lesperance & Associates told crypto.news. "

Whoever steals billions will serve a short term in prison.
1082  Economy / Economics / Re: USA: 50 years since the beginning of the oil embargo on: November 02, 2023, 11:54:17 AM
The embargo was declared on October 17, 1973 in response to US President Richard Nixon's order for Operation Nickel Grass, which supplied US weapons to Israel. The latter was at that moment repelling attacks from Egypt and Syria, who intended to return the territories captured by the Israelis during the Six-Day War of 1967."

I think everyone has long forgotten about this story, but after it the United States began to accumulate oil reserves.
The situation in the world is very difficult now, but do you consider repeating such a scenario in 50 years?
Much has changed since that date, and it seems that the United States and the rest of the world powers have understood the lesson. These countries have begun to adopt policies to contain countries that have banned the export of oil and gas to them. Today, all countries in the region are friends of the United States, and the United States has military bases in all of those countries, and I mean here Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the Emirates, in addition to overthrowing the Iraqi regime and continuing pressure on the Iranian regime. Do you really think that there are those who still dare to carry out these movements that are hostile to the direct interests of the West?
I think that the US will lose political influence. The first call was the withdrawal of the army from Afghanistan. Direct global conflicts are unlikely due to the presence of nuclear weapons in many countries, but economic wars will exhaust opponents. The US and Europe will not win a guerrilla war against a billion people in the Middle East.

CMC is basically a rating shop just like the rating agencies in the US which scammed their customers in 2008. CMC don’t care if they provide the right information or not. They will provide whatever information if you pay them. I noticed it when they insisted on listing ripple years ago. Ripple is not a crypto. It is a centralized database and yet cmc listed it on the top of their market cap list for years. (They still do it btw) Cmc helped ripple build its reputation, not for free probably. At least they used to have a way simpler ui, now (after binance acquired it) it looks just like another Chinese brothel where you can’t get away without getting scammed.
I agree with you completely. This post was made to ensure that cryptocurrency users do not make their conclusions based on data from only one free analytical service. Any information now needs to be checked for accuracy on several services.
It’s better to look for information on official sources of the project.
1084  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Russia To Ban Cryptocurrencies on: November 02, 2023, 11:33:49 AM
I haven’t written about Russia and cryptocurrencies for a long time. I will publish the latest data from Rosfinmonitoring (Federal Service for Financial Monitoring).
There are no laws. Cryptocurrency is property. Cryptocurrency cannot be used for payment, but this is not always respected.

"According to Rosfinmonitoring, the number of transactions with cryptocurrencies in Russia has tripled over the current year. The director of the department, Yuri Chikhanchin, announced this in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

“We see a significant number of transactions with cryptocurrency - their number has increased several times over the year. Thus, according to our data, the number of transactions with cryptocurrency in the nine months of this year exceeded 185 thousand (last year, during the same period, 60 thousand were recorded). As for the volume of operations, during the specified period it almost doubled,” said Chikhanchin."

1085  Bitcoin / Legal / CFTC Pays $350,000,000 to Whistleblowers! on: November 02, 2023, 11:18:19 AM
https://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/SpeechesTestimony/romerostatement103123
"Statement of Commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero In Support of the CFTC’s 2023 Annual Report on the Whistleblower Program and Customer Education Initiatives
October 31, 2023

As a former Inspector General who knows firsthand how important whistleblowers are, I wholeheartedly support whistleblowers and the CFTC’s Whistleblower Program, and am very proud of the Program’s outsized results.  Cumulatively, the CFTC has awarded almost $350 million to whistleblowers, with more than $3 billion in enforcement sanctions ordered in cases associated with those awards.  This includes $16 million in awards this year, including more than $15 million to two whistleblowers who provided significant information and assistance that led the CFTC to bring separate successful enforcement cases.

Whistleblowers play a vital role in supporting CFTC investigations related to fraud and other illegality.  The CFTC could not fully protect customers and markets without whistleblowers.  Whistleblowers help identify fraud and other illegality, interpret key evidence, and save considerable Commission resources and time.  The faster we can stop fraud, the more we can protect customers from harm."
1086  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Prosecution to use Caroline Ellison notes as evidence against SBF on: November 02, 2023, 11:08:53 AM

And it is very important who wins the elections, because part of the money is used to finance politicians.
So are you saying whoever wins the election will kindly donate back $9bn back to help pay customers their lost money? Nah, I don't think so. That would be raising too much eyebrows if you ask me. This will get people talking and they'd be like; "ooh, here's the dude that was in cohorts with Sam that made him cart all our funds away just to support his campaign". I feel whoever wins will be forever indebted to him for his generous donations and that will just be it.
It's painful but if I were these customers, I'd move on and accept the fact that I'm not getting my money back instead of holding up hope. I guess this the bitter lesson one learns when  they leave their funds in centralized exchanges.
Nobody will return the money, and even if you look at the history of such scams, it was always possible to return only a small part of the money. SBF is a clown who played his part and he is more likely to get a prison sentence. But in the USA there are different prisons, and in some the conditions are better than those of people outside. We need to see what prison he will be sent to after the court verdict.
1087  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Turkey is eyeing finalization of taxing cryptocurrencies by next year on: November 02, 2023, 10:59:57 AM
Türkiye is not Europe and America, where tax laws are respected. There are a lot of Russians in Turkey and all private exchanges work the same way as shadow exchangers in Moscow. No taxes and no reports. If you come to a tourist city like Antalya, you can easily buy or sell your cryptocurrencies and even be able to pay for the rent of an apartment.

Singapore Joins Forces With Japan, UK and Switzerland on Digital Asset Innovation
"The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced today that it is collaborating with regulators in Japan, the UK, and Switzerland to advance digital asset innovation through pilots focused on asset tokenization.

Under Project Guardian, an initiative led by MAS, the Financial Services Agency of Japan (FSA), the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) will work together to facilitate cross-border collaboration and develop common standards around digital assets.

The regulators aim to explore legal frameworks, identify potential risks, establish best practices, and promote interoperability in digital asset networks and tokenization. They will also facilitate industry pilots through regulatory sandboxes where applicable."

USA (and European Union) administration can do many things but they can't change sovereign countries laws, no-KYC exchanges exist in regulatory havens like Switzerland. There, it's legal to let customers exchanging 1000CHF(~$1100) by day without requiring KYC. It's their law. So I think some KYCless solutions will last for longtime, at least for small amounts, somewhere in the world, fortunately.

wait a minute so, a usa citizen can buy bitcoin online from switzerland and the irs can't know anything about that? i bet the irs doesn't like that, if that's the case. but better be careful. keep that ledger nano hidden so the irs agent doesn't notice it if they come knocking on your door for an audit.  Shocked

i thought the usa would surely try and make a military action to take over switzerland if switzerland refused to comply with a request to hand over information.

Several Russian guys who live in the USA found similar services within a few days in telegram chats of expats. I haven’t talked to them since then, but I don’t think everyone in the US follows cryptocurrency laws.

@zasad@. Uncle Gary declines to outline their roadmap for approval, however, we can be quite certain that because of political connections and maybe bribery, Blackrock's ETF application will be approved first on iShares' final scheduled deadline on March 15, 2024. This is 2 months before the halving and this will be very good timing to begin the institutional pump to the new all time bitcoin high on 2025 or 2026.

Bribery is in third world countries, but in America it is lobbying for interests Grin
I always try to think not like the crowd. If the spot ETF is approved in the next 2-3 months, then the price of Bitcoin may rise. I will sell my bitcoins. In this scenario, I will see a manipulation that they want to feed the hamsters with bitcoins, and then there will be a dump in the price of bitcoin and a transfer of liquidity into altcoins.
But if the spot ETF is approved close to the halving, then my scenario is wrong.

Bribery will take different forms, however, corruption will always stay in politics. How do you think the corporate interests get what they want if lobbying does not work? How do they pressure politicians and bureaucrats to do their bidding? Why do you also think there are powerful people who have politicians and judges in their pockets like nickles and dimes?
I agree that bribery has always existed in politics, but we also know from history how it ended for these countries. When a country's policies are absurd and begin to work against the interests of its country and its people, this will lead to great conflicts within the country.

Turkey to toughen law on crypto assets - minister
ANKARA, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Turkey is preparing new legislation covering crypto-assets to persuade an international crime watchdog to remove it from a "grey list" of countries that have taken insufficient action to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) downgraded Turkey to a so-called grey list in 2021. Addressing a parliamentary commission late on Tuesday, Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said a FATF report found Turkey fully compliant with all but one of the watchdog's 40 standards.

A lot of things are going wrong in Turkey at the moment.
I think new legislations in the financial sector are their smallest problem.

As long as this government, and dictatorship is in place, and they keep supporting terrorist groups like Hamas and trying to call all Muslims to "fight all the Jews", it doesn't matter what they are doing regarding crypto. It will have 0 influence on bitcoin in general I think.

Sooner or later this will end really bad.  Cry

It is better to avoid politics, because there will be a lot of counter-news about the bombing of hospitals.
In such a situation, all countries will be forced to raise taxes and look for additional sources of budget replenishment. And whose economies collapse faster, those countries will be among the losers. We live in an era of change.
