1161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin "mining cartel" (centralization power) on: October 11, 2020, 06:19:11 AM
There's this quote "He who controls the money supply of a nation controls the nation". I think that's true and already happening since all economies are under a centralized financial system.

Some people argue that bitcoin mining is already centralized since there are a few big miners but using it to influence an economic or political decision seems far-fetched. Another group could always compete with an existing big miner at any point in time and that makes bitcoin mining hard to control and leverage.

Interesting thought.

The money supply is the market. Most bitcoins have already been made, what miners produce is diminishing faster and faster, so their effect is also becoming negligible and prohibitively expensive.

Such thing isn't going to happen because the market forces are playing with the intended design.

The big miners will leave soon as it becomes unprofitable to mine, at least at those scales.

The likes of Square by buying some have a tiny little bit more of influencing power. This is going to become the only way, since mining becomes irrelevant as production grinds down to (nearly) a halt.

All in all there is nothing to worry about.

1163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Historical prices of bitcoin on: October 09, 2020, 10:25:21 PM
It's not so much a deal but I think this should be here. Bitcoin price calendar stamp in month of October.

2010: $0.06
2011: $5
2012: $12
2013: $127
2014: $383
2015: $238
2016: $614
2017: $4388
2018: $6579
2019: $8317
2020: $10,832

It's noticeable how in 2017 skyrocketed the price of bitcoin, that's when I entered the cryptospace and discovered this forum, I was able to ride the hype the pre pump in September 2017, that was a blast.

Seeing the prices of bitcoin through years makes me think of Moore's law,  you can check it out in google though it was not really doubling the price every year. Is a new law possible for the price of bitcoin like Moore's law?

Its an old law, i don't know what its called, but it does exist. Its not "twice" every year, it is vertical in the beginning and horizontal at the end. Its a logarithmic curve.

If the USD magically held the exact same purchasing power over time (it doesn't) then the price of bitcoin against the USD should increase less and less over time. It will approach a flat, without actually ever flattening. Of course it cannot go down either., unlike gold, no new bitcoins will ever be discovered after 2140.

Fiat money is made lose value on purpose, because of the dogmas of those economists not following the Austrian school.

Bitcoin is not losing value by having a "controlled" inflation that fits those mistaken models. Other assets like gold exhibit a similar curve in its historical prices. The early investors made the most by buying in the first few years, and that is how it is. By 2017 most was already gained, sure, people will gain less and less overtime as it enters maturity.

Said in another way, you would have always gained more the year before. And by that i mean buying and selling. If you don't sell, even better. Your wealth will not decrease and that is what matters.

Fiat cannot do the same, because a politician can ruin it overnight. As long as the State has control over the money, your wealth will never be safe. Been there, done that. Zimbabwe and Venezuela are not the last, even the almighty USD can fall into the hyperinflation spiral, just let your politicians do what they have been doing, especially recently...

When the USD falls and brings the EUR along with it, you will remember when you read these lines "Why did i not move my wealth in to bitcoin". Mark these words. I told Argentinians this a few years ago, now they are crying. This pattern can never end until all fiat is gone and the State, the banks and politicians are unable to mess with the money anymore.

State and money will go their separate ways, like State and religion did (supposedly).
1164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 12 years and no country has approved Bitcoin ?? on: October 09, 2020, 09:57:47 PM
:)Bitcoin was launched in 2007. It's 12 years and still no country has approved Bitcoin ??   Huh

and in 2018, 2nd richest man "Warren Buffet" said "bitcoin will end up badly" Smiley

Bitcoin was approved by Japan in 2014, only 5 years after its introduction (2009 not 2007). Therefore what you said is a lie, and with what purpose i wonder. Given your status and number of messages in this forum, i can only imagine what your objective is.

TL;DR: You lie.
1165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Enough is enough! Good bye Bitcoin! on: October 07, 2020, 06:10:53 PM
Pretty sure he could always find someone in localbitcoins or similar p2p exchange. They don't have to reside in the country, not even be nationals there, just have maybe some bank account with money in the fiat he desires.

I seriously doubt this to be a valid reason to bash Bitcoin. It is, as usual, an user error.
1166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BITCOIN basher, the Liar 'John McAfee' is finally Arrested on: October 07, 2020, 06:08:25 PM
Apparently, he was arrested at Barcelona airport (El Prat) last Saturday, when he was on his way to transfer to Istanbul. A police control in the area of international flights led to his detention, once they found out that he has an Interpol search and capture order on his shoulders, pending immediate extradition to the USA.

He was taken to court, after which the magistrate proceeded to send him to jail (a prison called Brians), presumably until they extradite him (or his lawyers manage to squeeze him out somehow).

See (in Spanish): https://www.lavanguardia.com/sucesos/20201006/483889290908/john-mcafee-detenido-barcelona-antivirus.html

Spain just saved Turkey from this jerk, serves him well really. He is not too different from a pump & dump schemer, always willing to tell crowds any lie as long as someone pays for it.

As the attention seeker he is, he is probably enjoying it.

Hopefully he won't be able to purchase his freedom in the US so he can escape again. This guy is a never ending source of law trouble.
1167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Yeees it's happening on: October 07, 2020, 05:53:48 PM
Do you think that the adoption is really happening? I've seen this picture, a convenience store literally selling bitcoin through an ATM, I know it isn't new at all but this proves the actuality of innovation, something that we are dreaming of since we knew bitcoin. Hail the King! I still haven't tried it yet, I'm still wondering how complex it is.

Wrong. Adoption is not Bitcoin ATMs, adoption is "Bitcoin accepted here" signs. True adoption is never touching fiat. You get paid with bitcoin, you pay with bitcoin. No exchanging, no extra fees.

An ATM is but a transitional inconvenience, like an exchange but with higher fees. You should rather push for the merchant to directly receive bitcoin instead of putting an ATM. Second best is having a payment processor, such as those using the software btcpay, etc; so that it at least "looks" transparent to the business. You pay bitcoin, they get fiat. This also sucks, only a bit less.

The number of ATMs do not represent Bitcoin adoption, it is the number of business accepting bitcoin that do.
1168  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Enough is enough! Good bye Bitcoin! on: October 07, 2020, 05:47:11 PM
I'm fed up with all this cryptocurrency thing.

First off, I make tremendous loses due to being a newbie in this market. After a second thought (and accepting the heavy loses incurred) I decided to try again and re-invest in bitcoin, only to be told this few moments ago.

I will not risking HODLING bitcoins if they will shut down the first (and only) cryptocurrency exchange in Kuwait. As such I decided to play it safe, incur further loses, and just sold all my bitcoins and getting out of this business for good.

After all, why should I HODL my bitcoins (1.25 this time) when I can't exchange them for cash when I need them? More importantly, how will bitcoin appreciate when exchanges will close in other parts of the world?

I wish I was never introduced to Bitcoin.  Angry

Any ideas on what I should do with my Ledger Nano X now?  Roll Eyes

What has your trading to do with Bitcoin? Its your fault playing roulette with your money, not Bitcoin's.

Most people here have only 1 advise: Buy and hold. You were trading, 90% of traders lose miserably, doesn't matter if its Bitcoin, USD, or Stocks. Trading is not for everyone and its your sole fault when you lose.

If your country goes hostile against Bitcoin, just go to another country and exchange it there. You can probably still do it in your country if you have the right contacts. Why are you not protesting your leaders for doing this? Bitcoin is not at fault, its your gov.

Sell your gadget to someone who can appreciate it. It is not needed for anything but mundane purchases at shops, since its a bit more secure than using your smartphone.

And to reiterate, there are like just 15 or 16 countries (counting yours) hostile to bitcoin. The rest of the world doesn't care. Bitcoin is bitcoin everywhere, unlike fiat which is often not accepted for political reasons in different countries.
1169  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Social media and tv making us adult before time? on: October 04, 2020, 09:20:14 AM
Well, children should probably not have unrestricted internet access. If necessary, the parents should establish a while list and only add sites needed for things like homework, education or supervised entertainment.

Internet is not a safe place, its like taking a country boy/girl to a large city and leaving him/her there abandoned.
1170  Other / Politics & Society / Re: World shut Down begins on: October 04, 2020, 08:39:48 AM
So if there is a little problem in the US, the whole "world" shutdowns? I don't think so...

I don't even know what the problem would be. Is the US dollar finally crumbling? Or its just the Trump got infected with covid19?

Even if the president dies things will run normally, the vice takes over until new elections. Most countries have this written in their constitution, even if the vice president also disappears, the legislative branch assumes control.

But a possible change of presidency in a country has nothing to do with the world shutting down.
1171  Other / Off-topic / Re: Comparisons Between Electric Automobiles and Gasoline Automobiles on: October 04, 2020, 08:21:51 AM
Not this idiocy again... You are not "exporting" pollution, because unlike ICE, not all power comes from burning fossil fuel or coal.

ICE vehicles are on the way of extinction, including diesel. This is like comparing a CRT vs a LED screen. As i mentioned before, the cost of manufacturing an ICE vehicle is many times higher, the only reason "some" EV cost more is because of scale in mass production, and the world is ramping EV production now that has been sufficiently demonstrated that they are the way to go.

Not hybrids, not combustion of any kind, those are barbaric antiques that require several times more complexity, maintenance and parts, are far more pollutant than EVs will ever be. And if the EVs were not very low impact already, the likes of Elon Musk are making them even better, his new batteries are even more environmentally friendly to manufacture and reprocess. The entire world will use them.

Reason to use a polluting gas guzzler? none. Distance is not a problem when you can just charge your car on any parking spot. No parking spot should lack a power plug. At the same time, ALL gas stations will disappear; and you know what normal people don't have in their homes? That's right, a gasoline tank. Your EV may at worst take longer to charge if you go to random place and all they got is a measly 120v plug.

Logically people will just install proper power in their garage / parking spot. At least 240v which is the standard for American homes.

You'll never have the anxiety in the morning of needing to quickly take the car to a gas station because it was left nearly empty last night. Park and plug is what everyone will do; you'll even recover the time you currently waste dealing with gas stations. Or for winters, that the car needs to warm up. Norway is one of those countries were Tesla's have been a huge hit, people there love them. Canada and other wintery places (Russia?) probably as well.
1172  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ps5 leacked images in this video with dimensions on: October 04, 2020, 07:45:32 AM
$100 for a Bluray drive?. This is as nonsensical as it gets. Why not use flash memory for game distribution? Sony even have their own thing that is not SD but almost. I think the manufacturing costs of making two redundant models would have reduced dramatically by offering just one with the flash card slot (or even usb thumb for what is worth it).

Also, optical media gets damaged. Not just the disc, but the lens and the mechanism that drives it. By this point i seriously question the existence of an unit with optical media support. And this unit isn't meant to have any backward compatibility anyway, it was the perfect moment to drop it entirely.

I wouldn't be surprised if this edition gets quickly buried later, and "digital" becomes the only one.

Indeed we are already past the optical disc era. And a flash based format could even take game updates without taking precious disk space in the console.

I guess I'll stick to my PC, less nonsense, more freedom.
1173  Other / Off-topic / Re: TESLA WILL BE THE FUTURE on: October 03, 2020, 05:05:11 PM
my partner owes one it is nice. I will get back to you on durability of it.

he has it for 18-20 months.

I would own one if I could afford one.

You can probably get an used model S without fancy self driving features for a decent price. Otherwise look at the model 3.

Since you already use solar for mining, you should also install panels/wind in your home, and a powerwall or two... Then later get a tesla car as well. They say people with powerwalls will be able to sell back to the grid at peak hours, think of it as a sort of "mining" (you could even eventually phase out the asic miners for these).

Ideally you would get a new model of powerwall with the newer battery (type 4680). You can even start without any solar, just charge it when its cheap and sell it when its peak hour. I read somewhere they are devising or already have some sort of blockchain related software for this they are trialing in New Zealand or Australia forgot where.

So if you cannot afford the car yet, get a powerwall... Its like a big UPS with better batteries, and much faster response. It can take serious loads too (see cars: powerwall on wheels).
1174  Other / Off-topic / Re: What do you use your phone for? on: October 03, 2020, 04:47:51 PM
Nonsense, i never use it for phone calls. Almost nobody would do normal phone calls anymore.

So, internet browsing, casual gaming, alarm clock, taking pictures, listening to music or during blackouts, fm radio.

I find it ironic that the name "phone" is still on it. Sure, voice calls inside IM are pretty much the same thing but free; but the "phone" carriers are actually better described as mobile internet providers.

Do millenials even know what the word "telephone" means? Have you seen those "kids react to rotary phone" videos? Its probably a concept that no longer means anything. "television" is also on its way to extinction, for the same reason.

So if a millennial reads this... Umm up until the 80ies or 90ies, "socialize" meant voice calling your friend using your family phone installed in your house. And yes, the thing wasn't exactly private, if there were more sets in the home they could pick it up and listen to your conversation (it was usually audible so you knew). This is because each home usually had a single line everyone had to share. And if you were using it for your VERY important social call (ie. gossip talk to your friend) then maybe your mom couldn't get a call from her Doctor or something.

Can you imagine? Hard to describe it. Since everyone can have their own "phone" line around, people don't even remember those things anymore. And while i didn't experience it, I'm told in more rural towns was worse, often phone lines were shared among neighbors.

Watch shows from the 80ies (or depicting the 80ies) and you'll often find a youth talking on the phone for hours. And after finish talking to friend A (who probably gave you new juicy info) you totally had to tell friend B. Rinse and repeat.

With social media this stuff is now redundant. But yeah, people did socialize before... Human nature and all.
1175  Other / Off-topic / Re: TESLA WILL BE THE FUTURE on: October 03, 2020, 02:34:22 AM
If you watch their latest presentation for shareholders you'll see that they just developed a new battery, which is changing everything. It is better than what they use, cheaper and lasts longer.

A large part of the price of electric cars are the batteries, so any reduction in cost of these batteries reduce the costs for electric vehicles. Also these better batteries are going to complement electric grids worldwide. Soon all those expensive peak fossil fuel plants will be replaced by battery banks everywhere. Solar/renewable are also getting a boost from these batteries, which use less space and can "deep" cycle as seen in the cars.

This new battery uses a new form factor invented by them, But the inside of it made for further improvements:

In short:

  • 14% improvement in cost/kWh coming from the change in cell form factor.
  • 18% improvement in cost/kWh as a result of the 10× manufacturing footprint reduction and 10× manufacturing energy consumption reduction. The new dry manufacturing process enables pressing the active battery powder material directly into a film. The new manufacturing process is based on Maxwell Technologies’ proprietary “proof of concept” process. Process is not at production scale yet, but there is a “clear path” to large scale production.
  • 5% improvement in cost/kWh coming from the increase utilization of silicon in the battery cells.
  • 12% reduction in cost/kWh coming from improvements in the cathode material.
  • 7% improvement in battery pack cost per kWh as a result of Tesla’s new integrated vehicle design. Tesla redesigned its vehicles using new front and rear castings that integrate with the battery pack. To accomplish this, Tesla developed a completely new alloy to enable casting of some of the largest components in the automotive space. These bolt directly into a new “structural battery,” eliminating the need for redundant, parallel elements in Teslas.

This not "the future", this is already here. They are manufacturing those.

Also, in this presentation they mentioned that during the pandemic, all other motor companies had loses, but not Tesla. But this is no just a "car" company anymore, do not underestimate these batteries.
1176  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What If Captain Kirk Used Bitcoin? on: October 02, 2020, 05:32:37 PM
This is probably because the utopian creator, Gene Roddenberry, wasn't alive anymore by the time they brought DS9 (stealing B5 concepts) and they added gold pressed latinum and old fashioned capitalism (Ferengi).

The original concept was that, because of the abundance of energy, and things like replicators, there was no need for money anymore. Just go to the replicator and make it do whatever you ever needed for free, a socialist dream.

And how exactly a money less society works? I guess this is what he tried to portrait. He was alive and even made a cameo in the first episode of TNG, and you can see during this show the concept still holds true, only later in the 90ies with 2~3 "Trek" shows running in parallel, did things got fuzzy.

I'm not even going to touch in the reboots and remakes of late.

In short, the answer is: No. But real life William Shatner, may do Cheesy
1177  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump has Coronavirus :( on: October 02, 2020, 05:17:46 PM
You give slightly incorrect info. He tweeted that he "tested positive for COVID-19", but not with "Chinese Coronavirus"  Smiley
I know that this all started from China, but there are lots of debates who created the virus. And I'm not sure he got tested positive with Chinese version of covid-19, but most probably by its already evolved form. So its not Chinese, but local.

Naturally the patriotic thing to say is that this was proudly made in America. After deliberately promoting people to get infected, making sure a local strain and not the Chinese import did the job.

Now lets see if they can recover, he is in the danger group, very old. Melanie is probably safe, i think?
1178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What is the vaccine for? on: October 02, 2020, 03:51:31 PM
The vaccine is meant for people who have not been infected, especially in the danger groups (elderly, those with respiratory issues, etc). While a few countries have "big pharma" making money, most other countries either decree a state of health emergency or just ignore/don't accept drug patents. They'll copy them, be it Russian, Chinese, Indian, American or from anywhere else as long as it works and can be reproduced.

Since the first vaccine was (accidentally) discovered, they have saved millions of lives. They do have a place and are not placebo. Smallpox was eradicated completely (not sure that was good, tho they kept the vaccine). Its not snake oil...
1179  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Learn something positive from COVID-19 on: October 02, 2020, 03:25:43 PM
This is the problem when you make homes and food too far from each other. This is a fundamental problem with suburbia, something that you don't see that often in other countries where commerce is much closer to residence.

On the other hand, those countries are ALSO friendlier to, say, bicycles. So in case you for some reason can't also get your car fuel, you could just cycle to the grocery and back.

But of course, in the 50ies America was all in about making cars king. To this day, they are still paying the price.

Simply put, don't let your exclusive residential urbanism without a single place to grab good. At the very least a convenience store at each "block", like most civilized countries do.

When you say "my grocery is so far that i need a car" you have a fundamental problem there.

If it took covid to wake you up from the decades old issue of suburbia, all the better. There has also been "new urbanism" proposals for decades, and it essentially means dropping the idea that residential should be miles away from commerce. Also, telecommuting is good, and delivery i guess.

Or maybe bleach didn't really work. So it turns out the "imaginary" disease that according to the deniers should be just flu, infected Mr. and Mrs Trump. If he dies, i can imagine the deniers pulling our random reason from their hats, perhaps a conspiracy staged from my country? That'll do the trick... (yeah, we still are waiting for OUR "dear" leader to get infected. getting close).
