1181  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 word seed question : is splitting it in half dangerous? on: March 07, 2021, 10:07:36 PM
If I have a 24 word seed, and I split it into 2 - 12 and 12
If an attacker somehow finds either the first 12 words or the 2nd 12 words, is there anyway they can use that to easily derive/find the second 12 words? or am I as safe as If I simply had a 12 word seed (which many wallets use?)
The chances that hackers can brute force the whole seed phrase from just twelve seed phrase is possible with powerful computional algorithmic tools, very possible tools like btcrecover can be able to do it with high computational power. It is not good to split your seed phrase, instead you can use shamir sharing for such in a way the seed phrase can be perfectly divided and splitted into secrets which is best for this.

Bit confused with this.  Electrum only has a 12 word seed.  The nano ledger s has a 24 word seed.  So wouldn't just having half of the nano ledger seed which is 12 word seed essentially the same thing as having no word in an electrum seed?

1182  Economy / Exchanges / Cheapest Way to Cashout To US Bank Account as US Customer? on: March 07, 2021, 10:01:19 PM
I'm an American that is abroad almost all year.  I know the sites to cashout fiat to us bank account are

Coinbase/Coinbase pro

Gemini

Binance.US

Kraken

Bitstamp?

But im a US resident of a state where I cannot use binance.US or Kraken.  So I will be using coinbase/coinbase pro then.  But do any US customers here use bitstamp or zero point to it?

Now I heard how much bitcoin transactions cost now to send and its expensive.  I want to withdraw crypto from a gambling site and they actually offer other options besides btc... such as litecoin or ETH or several other altcoins.  I don't believe they do tether usdt though.

Is the cheapest way to cashout... just request litecoin to my hardware wallet... then send litecoin to coinbase pro and sell it there and ACH to your bank of america checking account?

Now what if i have btc in my hardware wallet and want to cash it out to my US bank account right now?  Well I can't really do anything with this since i still have to send BTC right and thus eat the fees?

I heard someone mentioned if you have btc in an exchange and want to cash it out to your US bank account... don't send btc to coinbase pro and sell it because of the high sending transactions fees now with btc and they said trade it for litecoin or USDT and then send that to coinbase pro.  Is that what you would recommend if you have btc in an exchange and want to cash out to your US bank account?

Also what are tether USDT sending fees?  Example imagine you have l,000 usdt on the regular binance site and want to send it to coinbase and cash the usdt to fiat to your US bank account, how much are sending fees and cost?
1183  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [GUIDE] How to buy a Hardware Wallet the right way on: March 07, 2021, 09:05:16 PM
Do most of you have at least two hardware wallets in case?

Thinking of ordering another one and will most likely stick with nano ledger s.  Do most agree just get another one as oppose to get a nano ledger x or trezor?  I heard trezor there is security issue right?  Nano ledger x uses a battery so wouldn't that mean it would go bad after a few years?  But also its much more noticeable as compared to a nano ledger s which look like a keychain?

So do you say its good idea to get a PO Box at your local USPS then to order this?  Or it doesn't matter since i already ordered from nano ledger before?  Also i got to assume the fedex or dhl drivers know what the package is right when you bring the item and see its from France?  Then again many of them probably never even heard of hardware wallets right?

1186  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: How to find best Airdrops? on: March 07, 2021, 08:54:22 PM
Do airdrops require you to click on links though?  Because wouldn't that increase chance you get malware/virus?
1187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where does Elon and Saylor store their bitcoins? on: March 07, 2021, 08:48:06 PM
So no one here thinks they use a hardware wallet then right?

So you are saying its in coinbase or gemini custody.

So they don't have a seed then?

1188  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Place To Store Your Seed? on: March 07, 2021, 08:38:22 PM
Well with how much btc price has increased, I got to assume more people now are putting their seeds in bank safety deposit boxes and putting it in two pieces?  Thus at two different banks?

But i got to assume people with a lot of money might be paying for multiple deposit boxes at multiple different banks?  Thus imagine having four different bank deposit boxes at all different banks... so in case something happens to one of the deposit boxes, then they are still safe because they have the backup?

Also i never had a safe deposit box but how often are those broken into?  Also if it does happen, the bank notifies you within a day or two at the most right?

I got to assume the Winklewoss twins probably have like over ten plus safe deposit boxes then right for multiple backups?  Then again if you do that, it exposes you more.  But all the safe deposit boxes need to be hit at around the same time though.

The other thing I thought was if you live in a luxury high rise buliding with security, then wouldn't that be really safe since keeping it in a safe deposit box in your apartment/condo would be extremely secure?  Like imaging living in the trump tower or one of those high rises in las vegas.  Wouldn't you feel very secure keeping your seed in a safe deposit box or even in your desk if you live in a high secured place like that?

But for regular people, wouldn't it make sense to have multiple deposit boxes?  I mean if you have 6 figures worth of crypto, wouldn't that be the point when you probably should do it with how much btc has increased?
1189  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Selecting a proper way to store my Bitcoins on: March 07, 2021, 08:32:26 PM
Don't use Web wallets. They don't provide any tangible benefits whatsoever,

Desktop wallets like Electrum, Wasabi Wallet and Bitcoin Core are fine for normal use but they're not as safe as it's far more susceptible to malware attacks since you're using it all the time. They act more like a hot wallet to store small amounts of Bitcoin for easy and quick access. It's safe enough provided that you are able to manage your own security well.

Hardware wallets (Trezor, ColdCard) are much safer than those but comes at a price. I would recommend you to consider it if you want the convenience and have an idiot proof method to store Bitcoins. If possible, try to ship them to your PO boxes or a reshipper so you won't reveal your actual address. Do your own research before any purchase.

I can't really recommend people to use paper wallets. If you want, you can create a an air-gapped storage using two Electrum instances[1]. It provides similar security to an airgapped wallet if done correctly as it practically eliminates the possibility of a malware attack.

Have you ordered a hardware wallet and sent it to a PO box?  What do you mean by a reshipper?  Thats interesting because if you do it that way, then well your address won't be on the nano ledger s database.

1190  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Clicking Links Malware/Keylogger Question on: March 07, 2021, 08:31:17 PM
How do i make sure my iphone does not have any malware/trojan/keylogger or anything like that?  Asking this because im going to download one of those apps like blockfi so i could open an account and send crypto there.

Is there a way to make sure my iphone is free of any malware before I do this?  Obviously resetting the iphone would do it but I will obviously not do that.
1191  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Earning Interest and Staking? on: March 07, 2021, 08:23:42 PM
Thoughts on

Celsius

Blockfi

They seem to offer interest on stablecoins so wouldnt that be a good idea if you want stable returns?
1192  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Brute Force And Seed Phrase Security Questions on: March 07, 2021, 08:22:16 PM
Okay just to confirm, so if someone were to try to brute force and say the seed they wrote down is incorrect... it would show an error right such as this seed is not correct?

As oppose to it just opening and showing no balance?

Still... how is it possible that a seed can't be brute forced if there are so many addresses out there and so many wallets?  Example with electrum and nano ledger s, waves, myetherwallet, bitcore and all of those?  But are the word seed list for those other wallets like waves and myetherwallet the same as for electrum/nano ledger s?

1195  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Ledger Live Not Showing All Transaction History? on: March 07, 2021, 08:14:07 PM
So when I log into ledger live, I see all the transactions shown in the latest operations.  The thing is I haven't done many transactions the last few years.  But how many transactions does it show or suppose to show?  For example, it does go back all the way to when i sent some coins to my ledger.  But it doesn't show old transactions of when I transferred btc from my electrum to nano ledger s.
I recall few months ago, I always see the first few transactions I did to the nano ledger s which was me sending btc from electrum to the nano ledger s.

Is it something like it only goes back X amount of years?  If so, is there a way to check older transactions?

Also a few times I have received either btc or bch dust transactions... heard that was the term... where you receive btc or bch but the amount is 0 USD but like its 0.00000000008 btc or bch which is nothing.  But some of these transactions are no longer there anymore in my transaction history?  Can someone explain this?  I know i received a btc/bch dust transaction not that long ago but how come it no longfer shows up in the latest operations?

1196  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How often Does Nano Ledger Have a Firmware Update? on: March 07, 2021, 07:58:36 PM
Has there been any firmware update since I posted this thread?  Last time i connected my nano ledger to my laptop was about a month to two months ago.  I do log in to ledger live almost daily though.

But the last time I connected my nano ledger to it, I'm pretty certain I didn't see any firmware update about two months ago?

1198  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Just created an account with Gemini & have questions on: March 04, 2021, 05:11:12 AM
Is there a way to use gemini without having to have a US sms phone number?  Im American but abroad almost all year.  I put my google voice number to set my account up but got message they don't allow voip phone number for verification.  Is there a way to get by this?

Coinbase doesn't seem to have this issue and did allow me to use my google voice number for verification.

Also after that one time SMS with gemini... do you still need to have that phone number in order to continue to use gemini?  For example could i use someone else phone number for verification and once I do that... then any two factor authorization I use would be google authenticator or authy?  Again im abroad almost all year and a US citizen and do have a google voice US number... but it didn't seem to accept it as verification.
1199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Very high fees - bitcoin fails on: February 28, 2021, 12:29:49 AM
At the moment, how much does it cost to send btc in a transaction now on average?  What is the lowest fee could you use now if you adjusted it on nano ledger s or electrum now?
1200  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: how to detect and discover rise and explosion alt coins ? on: February 28, 2021, 12:22:37 AM
Isn't one of the ways check Coinmarketcap and then check which went up the most the last week or day?  Of course if you do that... well many coins probably already hit the peak or close to it?
