1201  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: HBN Investment Journal - 2% returns every ten days - 80,000+ HBN Porfolio on: May 12, 2014, 10:07:05 AM
As a long term HBN investor, I have to be quite honest I did not buy any substantial blocks of HBN at prices of 30k satoshi. Now that the price has come back down I think I am going to start buying a few decent chunks everyday and spread my buy out over a few days to get more of an average price rather than what the price happened to be at a particular time.  I still think HBN is the best coin out there, and right now is time to start adding more to my portfolio.
What do you consider a decent price? I'd say the average price is 20k (of course, early adopters got it cheaper, but I don't think it will happen again anytime soon).

I think there are many factors at play. Don't forget that the short term price also depends on how the whole altcoin market is doing. Altcoins can be VERY volatile even when priced against BTC. If the overall market plummets or rallies, it's hard to see how HBN wouldn't be affected. Giving a price estimate as 'fair' doesn't capture the whole altcoin scene, IMO. You need to look at several factors at play. Which is why, I usually have a fair % of my portfolio in BTC, so if there's a bear market overall, I can pick up my favorite coins on the cheap. If they are fairly valued, I hold.

The op said Litecoin fork, so I assume Scrypt?
1203  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: >>Coins Source<<| Company Shares on Cryptostocks | SourceCoin (SRC) on Poloniex on: May 07, 2014, 10:16:42 AM
Chill bro Smiley

You don't have to agree with anything CoinsSource stands for. That doesn't make it an IPO scam like you're trying to propagate. They are trying something - perhaps they'll succeed, perhaps they'll fail. I am not a fan of using SRC when it's already in use, so we're on the same page on that one, but calling them scams because of this is irresponsible. They aren't maliciously trying to do anything to your beloved original SRC. If they change the symbol, in your mind, will they miraculously become non-scam? Why conflate the two?

Does anyone know if coinage is destroyed for rejected blocks? I couldn't find the information about this (Maybe I missed something obvious in the wiki?)

Yep Smiley

Cool. The link says "you will have not lost any coin days that has been accumulated" so I am guessing I didn't really lose anything much here?

1207  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] IPO of MaidSafe:  Entering the Future of the Decentralized Internet on: April 27, 2014, 06:18:35 AM

Do not worry we gave everyone the 40% discount. This was the step we had to take, to be fair. I figured that BTC holders were running the risk of being pushed out, also they ran the risk of all the bonus going to MSC holders. It was something we should have catered for better and a mistake in hindsight. We know now the Maser protocol rules way more than we did 2 weeks ago. It is a great system and we pushed it to the limits, those developers are amazing, but we slaughtered them with the speed of this.

So we ended up with a super fast sale where the project got way too many MSC. We figured we may get 25% or so MSC and that was great as they had provided this system for us to be able to do the crowd sale and the devs there worked like mad to do it. As MSC is not as liquid as BTC we did want only a small amount, but this was us supporting the Mastercoin project as they supported us. I believe supporting each other is good. The 25% figure was something we could hope to see build value and liquidity over time, so great.

What happened shocked everyone, we had to act fast. So we purchased all msafe for BTC backers up front rather than manually converting on each purchase. This allowed everyone the same deal, even though our 0.2 figure for MSC was also clearly wrong in hindsight. This is a brand new space, there will be more mistakes by other projects, we need to support and help as well as critique when necessary. We learn by understanding our own mistakes and we progress by helping others.

I think it's amazing we were seen as some kind of pump and dump (not by you). We ended up with less liquidity when we need it to get the community developer teams up and running. The Master Protocol guys certainly did not want us to end up with a huge portion of MSC either as that is not great for them. So we made a mistake we never seen the rush come, but we paid for it by sacrificing approx $2-3.5 million in liquidity, but it was a stance we felt was fair on the community, our own concerns were secondary at that time. This does not count the fact the whole thing went for the 40% bonus rate, we (when I say we I mean the community not MaidSafe, it's the community that gets most of the funds we raised if we get it right) paid the price for our mistake in that way for sure. We can partially repay the wider community and we will by holding a meeting with all parties on Monday evening to figure out the mistakes, the good parts and how others can benefit, this will all be made public and hide nothing (as usual).

Why would we want loads of MSC and less BTC, people need to ask themselves this question, all our staff went full in BTC so it would make no sense at all.

The sale was amazing, we have several thousand buyers who are now part of making this all happen and now we have to work very hard to make sure they are all rewarded with a new Internet and an incredible currency. It's a humbling thing to see that level of support for a project, as a community we need to be very honest critical and brave. The huge majority are of the same opinion and that's amazing. We do need to clear up the messaging and everyone is very welcome to watch our meetings, read our emails (they are public at the dev list) and hopefully meet us at a show soon. Nothing like a meeting in person I think.

so thanks for your support and we will not let you down.

I think this is an important point. In cases like these, it makes sense to give the developers the benefit of doubt. It's unlikely their intention was to screw people with BTC donations. Mistakes were made that need to be forgiven and we need to learn from them and move on.

Kudos to the MaidSafe team and look forward to some amazing innovation!
1208  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Invictus Innovations ProtoShares Cheat Sheet | CPU Mining on: April 20, 2014, 08:25:57 PM
Am I right to say, donating the PTS to become AGS right now is more worth it than holding PTS?

Would be smart to buy and hold PTS right now until the next DAC snapshot is announced.  Once this announcement takes place you can value holding PTS or trading for AGS.
Why?

PTS is dirt cheap right now.  Look what happened when the BTS snapshot was announced.  This rise in price gave you freedom to hold PTS, trade PTS for AGS, or sell PTS all together for a profit and perhaps buy BTS after launch.

Compared to other alt's, PTS brings additional value and rewards those who hold long term.
True, but I guess the initial question is, then why not convert your PTS to AGS, and at the current rates, it seems like you can get about 3 times as many shares in the new DACs as PTS. That's why I say you need to look at the liquidity premium and determine for yourself if that's the path you want to take or not.

Depends. PTS is liquid and can be traded on exchanges. It would probably also have value in and of itself (as just another altcoin) unlike AGS. But if all you need is equity in future DACs, then you're right (check the numbers in any case though for that particular day when you want to donate).

At 17,000 Safecoin @$500, the market cap is about $126 million already
(2^32/17000 * 500). Just laying it out there so people can make an informed decision whether or not to buy in.

1213  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will you sell at $10,000? on: April 13, 2014, 08:46:18 PM
There's no point in coming up with a random number to sell at. It depends on a lot of other factors surrounding Bitcoin and the ecosystem and its adoption and future potential there on.

1216  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Anonymous Ads v2 - earn ɃɃ with your site OR use ɃɃ to advertise! on: April 04, 2014, 06:11:47 PM
From a purely CPM perspective, would it benefit if I had a larger ad unit as opposed to the smallest one, since each visitor is counted as one visitor in either case?

Thanks for your question!

Advertisers can limit their campaigns to certain ad unit sizes thus increasing average CPM for that ad sizes. Also probably bigger ad units have more chances to attract buyers and earn rewards. But on practice the impact of ad unit size on the CPM is negligible.
Got it. Thanks for your speedy reply!

Do you think there is a future for HBN? All this talk, I might consider buying into HBN. Theres definetley a volume increase and a piqued interest according to market caps xD

I definitely think there is a future to HBN.  Is HBN going to be used as a currency to buy goods?  There is a long ways to go for that.  Right now I see HBN being the go to hobby/learning/community coin in the future, and especially with GPU mining era coming to a close.  Maybe once it gets more adoption we will see larger amounts of charity work done with the coin, and more merchants joining the fun.

That is just a guess, but I am definitely a long term holder, rather than a trader.
Agreed. But take any advice you get here with a grain of salt - we're all biased in our own ways.

You need to look at factors that contribute to the future of any altcoin. It needs a controlled level of inflation, so that the miners don't dump all at once (like in the multipools) which depresses prices. If you think about it, coins like HBN provide a strong incentive for people who are issued new coins to hold on rather than dump on the exchanges. This is a pretty important aspect that is often ignored.

Compared to other coins, yes, HBN has a much smaller "real world" usage - charity/merchant adoption etc. Adoption will come, as a function of the popularity of the coin though. It also depends on the community of people - whether they are actively pursuing this adoption (they don't seem to be). Another good thing HBN has going for it is the very active devs who seem to be in this for the long term rather than a quick pump and dump.

Like with most alts, there is always a risk. Two months ago, the price was a quarter of what it is today in terms of BTC. Will it fall? Will it rise? Who knows. If you're in it for the long term though, say, 1 year, and you ask my biased opinion, I would say it's more likely to go up than down

Edit
OOOOO look at the top traded coins on cryptsy, HBN has got itself into the #14 slot at the moment

That's a sweet achievement actually, considering how the market value of HBN is quite low compared to many other alts out there.
