With those Economics results, I would kill to pick your brain. I consider myself rather clueless on economics, and this result is interesting as hell.
Well, I'm an anarcho-capitalist ( The Machinery of Freedom describes my particular ancap flavor). So I really should've gotten 100% capitalism, and I consider this a bug in the quiz. The quiz doesn't seem that great. It seems impossible to be sane and then get very high numbers in most pairs of categories, which strikes me as a flaw in their whole methodology. I think that I should've gotten a higher score in "liberty", for example, but probably the questions which would've caused this were also pro-government, pro-egalitarian, or anti-market. Do you think the community or Bitcoin have the possibility to change minds on economics issues?
Not directly, so much. The biggest value in this stuff is that it creates a territory of freedom where governments have little or no power. People will just naturally exploit this where they can, and as they increasingly rely on it, that's what might change minds, and it also reduces the power of governments in itself. |

The community has become less libertarian as it has expanded, which is disappointing, but not really unexpected. IMO Bitcoin is still a force for freedom regardless, though.   |

Are we allowed to create image ads (now) No. Very often, advertisers send me ads that violate some of the ad-construction rules. Usually I just fix them. But on rare occasions I get sent an ad that is so screwed up that I can't reasonably fix it. When that happens, I may (at my discretion) make a one-time exception and transform their ad into a static image (eg. by making a screenshot of their rule-breaking ad) just so that the advertiser doesn't burn ad time. I basically only do this a maximum of one time per advertiser; if they want to update their ad or advertise in future rounds, they'll have to follow the rules or else I'm just going to reject it, even if it causes them to burn ad time. |

It seems that you were banned due to this post, where the link is either a phishing link or was considered referral spam. The forum sells ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page. This income is used primarily to cover hosting costs and to pay moderators for their work (there are many moderators, so each moderator gets only a small amount -- moderators should be seen as volunteers, not employees). Any leftover amount is typically either saved for future expenses or otherwise reinvested into the forum or the ecosystem. Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation. Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser (Firefox, 900px wide). Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. No ICOs [1], banks, funds, or anything else that a person can be said to "invest" in; I may very rarely make exceptions if you convince me that you are ultra legit, but don't count on it. Ads may be rejected for other reasons, and I may remove ads even after they are accepted. There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Nine of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme. Duration- Your ads are guaranteed to be up for at least 7 days. - I usually try to keep ads up for no more than 8 or 9 days. - Sometimes ads might be up for longer, but hopefully no longer than 12 days. Unfortunately of the two possible ends to this cycle a permanent tyranny appears the more likely one.
We are a perhaps only a single generation away from the time when technological advances will probably make overthrowing a tyranny nearly impossible once it is established.
I've also been getting increasingly worried about that possibility. What worries me most is a 1984-style scenario where the game is constructed such that even the people "in charge" can't escape. If someone is in charge, then there's some hope, since I think that almost everyone is at least a little decent, and even most tyrants would not want to completely crush all freedom and virtue. But with technology, I could see humanity trapping itself utterly in some perpetual machine with no freedom or progress of any kind. |

A major statistical difficulty which I remembered when gathering these is that a lot of people receive merit for pre-merit posts. (Though people who made zero post-merit posts were excluded in the above stats.) Gathering these stats is slow. It could be tracked live per user, but I'd have to add a lot of caching at various points. I'm probably not going to do it. The weekly tracking is an interesting idea. |

The current status quo seems OK. If you have to pay $20 per merit plus a risk of getting red trust, then that's a situation that doesn't concern me at all. I'm not going to lose sleep over people going to ridiculous lengths to buy merit, since only a small number of people will be willing and able to do that.
As long as merit sales are a black market, I'm happy, since that makes it far more difficult and expensive to buy merit. If that's the case, then the small volume of black-market merit trades don't themselves bother me much, and I think that it does more harm than good to get too witch-hunty about it.

I tried two or three different metrics for things like "emep", but they all had poor results, mainly because so many posts were made pre-merit and there's so much difference between users on the various input variables. If people have ideas for stats in this vein, give me an exact formula with preferably only a few input variables. I might at least post some global stats, though maintaining an up-to-date stat for each user might be too slow.

I might just be being stupid here, but then why on the same post did The Pharmacist have the error and no one else did? Surely if the post is missing some info, it is missing the info for everybody?
Permissions and ignored-boards can also cause info to be missing per-user. In this case I think that it happened because The Pharmacist is ignoring the board in which that post resides. The ignored-boards page says, "Be advised that by ignoring a board it will be completely inaccessible to you." How it works is that almost all forum systems view you as being not allowed to see the board, just like hidden boards. This is also why you can't quote a post in an ignored board. |

That error happens when some info about the post is missing/undefined. For example, you get that when you try to merit a post by a guest, since those posts don't have a defined user.

Apparently it's an implementation of this paper. As I understand it: - You print (or they sell you) a one-time-pad (OTP) sheet. In the bottom-right is the seed used to generate the rest of the noise in the OTP. - You enter the OTP seed into Electrum, so that Electrum knows what the OTP sheet looks like. - Electrum generates a 2D image spelling out your mnemonic, and then ~XORs each pixel of that image with the OTP. The result is a sheet which looks like noise. You print this out. - When you overlay the OTP sheet with the encoded-mnemonic sheet, this performs another ~XOR operation, and you see the mnemonic spelled out. Both sheets need to be compromised to get your mnemonic. Though note that when Electrum generates the encoded-mnemonic sheet, it needs to know the OTP sheet at least temporarily. It's an interesting trick, and it should be perfectly secure if done right. However: - It's insecure to use the same OTP sheet for two different mnemonics. - When you print the mnemonic sheet, how do you ensure that it's scaled exactly the same as the OTP sheet? - If you buy the OTP sheet, then there's an opportunity for them to record it and get one of your 2 factors. If you print it yourself, then it may be more difficult to shine light through (since their OTP sheets are made out of transparent plastic), but maybe it's still possible. |

Recently I heard about something that Polybius wrote about 100 years before the fall of the Roman Republic which seems to me to be eerily relevant even today. He predicts that all governments/societies go through a 7-stage cycle: monarchy, kingship, tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy, mob-rule, and then from chaos back to monarchy. I see this sequence throughout history (Russia & the Soviet Union comes to mind), and you could place the US at various points on the cycle. What do you think? Does this idea still have merit 2100+ years later? If so, at what point in the cycle are we in now? If this cycle is indeed inevitable in politics, then Bitcoin offers a hope of escape, since Bitcoin (and crypto-anarchy generally) is all about removing politics from life. Instead of trusting a king, an aristocracy, or a majority, you structure things so that everyone is and can reasonably be sovereign over his own affairs. Here's what Polybius wrote, all emphasis and excerpting mine: When owing to floods, famines, failure of crops or other such causes there occurs such a destruction of the human race as tradition tells us has more than once happened, and as we must believe will often happen again, all arts and crafts perishing at the same time, then in the course of time, when springing from the survivors as from seeds men have again increased in numbers and just like other animals form herds — it being a matter of course that they too should herd together with those of their kind owing to their natural weakness — it is a necessary consequence that the man who excels in bodily strength and in courage will lead and rule over the rest. We observe and should regard as a most genuine work of nature this very phenomenon in the case of the other animals which act purely by instinct and among whom the strongest are always indisputably the masters — I speak of bulls, boars, cocks, and the like. For the commons, as if bound to pay at once their debt of gratitude to the abolishers of monarchy, would make them their leaders and entrust their destinies to them. At first these chiefs gladly assumed this charge and regarded nothing as of greater importance than the common interest, administering the private and public affairs of the people with paternal solicitude. But here again when children inherited this position of authority from their fathers, having no experience of misfortune and none at all of civil equality and liberty of speech, and having been brought up from the cradle amid the evidences of the power and high position of their fathers, they abandoned themselves some to greed of gain and unscrupulous money-making, others to indulgence in wine and the convivial excess which accompanies it, and others again to the violation of women and the rape of boys; and thus converting the aristocracy into an oligarchy aroused in the people feelings similar to those of which I just spoke, and in consequence met with the same disastrous end as the tyrant. For whenever anyone who has noticed the jealousy and hatred with which you are regarded by the citizens, has the courage to speak or act against the chiefs of the state he has the whole mass of the people ready to back him. Next, when they have either killed or banished the oligarchs, they no longer venture to set a king over them, as they still remember with terror the injustice they suffered from the former ones, nor can they entrust the government with confidence to a select few, with the evidence before them of their recent error in doing so. Thus the only hope still surviving unimpaired is in themselves, and to this they resort, making the state a democracy instead of an oligarchy and assuming the responsibility for the conduct of affairs. Then as long as some of those survive who experienced the evils of oligarchical dominion, they are well pleased with the present form of government, and set a high value on equality and freedom of speech. But when a new generation arises and the democracy falls into the hands of the grandchildren of its founders, they have become so accustomed to freedom and equality that they no longer value them, and begin to aim at pre-eminence; and it is chiefly those of ample fortune who fall into this error. So when they begin to lust for power and cannot attain it through themselves or their own good qualities, they ruin their estates, tempting and corrupting the people in every possible way. And hence when by their foolish thirst for reputation they have created among the masses an appetite for gifts and the habit of receiving them, democracy in its turn is abolished and changes into a rule of force and violence [mob-rule]. For the people, having grown accustomed to feed at the expense of others and to depend for their livelihood on the property of others, as soon as they find a leader who is enterprising but is excluded from the houses of office by his penury, institute the rule of violence; and now uniting their forces massacre, banish, and plunder, until they degenerate again into perfect savages and find once more a master and monarch.
Such is the cycle of political revolution, the course appointed by nature in which constitutions change, disappear, and finally return to the point from which they started. Anyone who clearly perceives this may indeed in speaking of the future of any state be wrong in his estimate of the time the process will take, but if his judgement is not tainted by animosity or jealousy, he will very seldom be mistaken as to the stage of growth or decline it has reached, and as to the form into which it will change. And especially in the case of the Roman state will this method enable us to arrive at a knowledge of its formation, growth, and greatest perfection, and likewise of the change for the worse which is sure to follow some day. For, as I said, this state, more than any other, has been formed and has grown naturally, and will undergo a natural decline and change to its contrary. |
