1521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reward Payout vs World Population on: August 14, 2012, 04:45:50 AM

What's fascinating about this process is that it might actually be used for a protocol change that has some possibility of success (IDK maybe more secure in some way), where BTC forks BTCultra and the original protocol slowly loses value against the new one.

If there are ever major changes to be made that require a hard fork I think that is the way it has to be done. Probably if it is generally expected that nearly everyone will eventually change we'll just call the new one bitcoin also.

It would be extremely interesting if something very different decided to award units for destroying bitcoins in order to bootstrap itself. You'd be able to buy this new money essentially anonymously and very easily.
1522  Economy / Gambling / Re: SealsWithClubs.eu - 60BTC guarantee tournament Sunday on: August 13, 2012, 11:02:34 PM
This Thursday at 10pm ET we've got a 10BC guarantee with 0.3BTC entry.
1523  Economy / Speculation / Re: $12!!!!!! on: August 13, 2012, 10:11:33 PM

Totally, he's using all those coins to buy bitcoins.............
1524  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can bitcoins break $5,000 in 20 years? on: August 13, 2012, 10:10:15 PM
I doubt this assumption is accurate. With projected Bitcoin growth, we'd see closer to a drive that big every seven blocks in 57 years.

Calculations:

In 57 years Bitcoin will be the only form of currency on Earth. The population of Earth is projected to be nine billion. The average person performs 100 transactions a month. That is around 0.0231 transactions per person per block. In total, that is 208 million transactions per block. The average transaction size is around 1 KB. Therefore, there will be 208 GB on average per block in 57 years.

There is no way most transactions will be hitting the block chain 57 years from now. It probably won't even be 1%.

It won't be close to 1% in just a decade.

Already even with virtually free blockchain tx, Seals has done about 12000 blockchain transactions in a year, but we do almost 2000 multi-way balance updates each day.
1525  Economy / Lending / Re: Bryan Micon's List of BTC Ponzi Schemes that should not be listed as "Lending" on: August 13, 2012, 06:52:19 PM
Micon is a Seals pro and handles some marketing and advertising for Seals. if you've got links to Seals spamming, I want to see them.

He cannot steal Seals deposits.

Pokerfraudalert.com is not some legit site, it is Druff's response to being kicked off of Micon's show. Pokerfraudalert.com posted false information about Seals password handling.
1526  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt. Gox USD 365-day change is now negative... when will it become positive? on: August 13, 2012, 05:49:27 PM
For a year at least!
1527  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I want firstbits key pair for 1gig on: August 13, 2012, 05:37:29 PM
that's ridiculous. e.g. sites like blockchain.info don't query this "firstbit database". there is a set of rules which determine the firstbit address and that's it.

I don't think that this is correct as I have created vanity addresses whose "firstbits" don't show up on blockchain.info until sometimes as many as 10 confirmations (which is when they seem to first appear on firstbits.com).

The only way a firstbits address can changeis a blockchain reorganization. Firstbits.com waits for confirmations because we don't want to tell you your firstbits until it's very solid, like Gox doesn't want to credit your account until so many confirmations, they have the coins, and your address has it's firstbits, we're just not telling you yet.

To be super clear. Firstbits.com or any other correct implementation (like blockchain.info) does not decide your firstbits, we just report what the algorithm comes up with after looking in the chain.

Maybe I should do this in the morning, I don't see password reset anywhere on the webpage or in the email.
1529  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Supply Bitcoin addresses in DNS records on: August 13, 2012, 08:26:23 AM
Tell me your opinions!

This really only works for donations and where there is no need to know who the sender is.

This is my first thought, but then, what about a plugin or something that when you send the bitcoin you also sign and email a message to the domain "I just sent you those coins from address 1blahblahblah". Doesn't work from web wallets, at least until they add that functionality, there might be stickiness there, but the wallet did just sign a tx, they could sign and send a message if they were willing, no?

glasses of wine = 4

so respond accordingly.
1530  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Statement about the suspect of recent Bitcoinica hack on: August 13, 2012, 08:13:40 AM
There is the possibility he now has a lawyer who is telling him to stfu.

I really think if a lawyer told Zhou not to talk, Zhou would tell us. He loves to talk.
1531  Economy / Gambling / Re: BitDraw - Bitcoin Raffles and Lotteries on: August 13, 2012, 08:11:24 AM
deposit some Bitcoin to receive gaming tokens (TKN), and use those tokens to buy ticketsope that you enjoy BitDraw, and good luck![/b]

why is it such a big secret to say how much tokens cost?  such as one bitcoin is equivalent to x tokens.

Does it matter? You're going to get X BTC worth of tokens. Anything but a power of 10 is probably silly. And I guess if it is non-linear that's an issue.
1532  Economy / Gambling / Re: BitDraw - Bitcoin Raffles and Lotteries on: August 13, 2012, 08:10:43 AM
I just registered. I tried my password 3 times, couldn't get in, checked email, ahha have to activate, clicked it, went to site, still says bad login, copy/pasted link, still no dice. Am I losing my mind?
1533  Other / Meta / Re: Gathering Opinions: Stickies in Lending on: August 13, 2012, 02:19:27 AM
I created the subforum. Someone else can move the posts.

I saw that, and saw Maged wasn't on so I went ahead and got a good start. I did a lot at once so people will see where they go.

Wasn't sure what to do with Micon's thread so I just left it for now, but since it's about those long term offers it should probably be there as well.

Please don't take me for being an ass, but shouldn't a thread started to debate whether a thread is actually lending or not be in Meta?

Threads about lending go in lending, threads about the lending forum (and any other forum) go in meta. Wait, where do posts about what goes in meta go? (theymos? meta-meta forum?)
1534  Economy / Gambling / Re: A public plea to SealsWithClubs on: August 12, 2012, 11:20:14 PM
One thing that is missing is that there is no Short handed tables or 6 player tables, please add this feature...

A lot of the play on the site is actually shorthanded at the full tables. Since there are not many running games it seemed wrong to keep people waiting on those occasions. When we grow enough to support 6 and 9 we will add them. There are 6max SNGs available now.

There are HU tables, but the rake is half (via weekly rakeback) for playing HU and 3 handed at the full tables since it helps us for you to start them. If a table does get filled and you want there is another table at most stakes.
1535  Economy / Gambling / Re: A public plea to SealsWithClubs on: August 12, 2012, 11:14:01 PM
Hey, snowboard, it isn't good for playing at another site I know, sorry about that. If you can spare the screen room you could reduce the size of the browser and the table inside the browser.

Sorry about the breaks too, we can only set it according to blind rounds right now and 55 is awkward to hit that way, but I'll keep it mind and maybe we can get the system changed.
1536  Economy / Economics / Re: Does much of gold's market cap eventually go to Bitcoin? on: August 12, 2012, 09:39:03 PM
There are basically two kinds of "large holders"of gold.  Government entities (central banks) and rich private parties (e.g. Kyle Bass).

Would love to be proved wrong, but I don't think central banks will be selling gold to add Bitcoin reserves anytime soon, I don't think they would want to willingly give it any legitimacy.

Private large gold holders, however, are another matter.  If their reasons to hold gold are to protect against oppressive government actions and  scenarios like a collapse in the financial system, then I predict they will eventually exchange some percentage of their gold hedge for Bitcoins.  Why?

Because if you assume an oppressive surveillance state, the gold hedge potentially fails under several plausible scenarios: confiscation orders, windfall taxes, x-ray border controls, and so on.

If the stormtroopers break down your door with metal detectors in hand, only Bitcoin is both pseudonymous and intangible enough to give you a chance of hiding your wealth or escaping with it across borders.  Big money will figure this out (if it hasn't already) and act accordingly.  Offshore accounts used to be a solution for this scenario, but recent events have proven that banks will give up their clients if pressured hard enough.

Think big.  Bitcoin is a fantastically good diversifier/insurance for multimillionaires and billionaires.  Once Bitcoin starts being marketed properly as "ultimate disaster insurance" to private wealth portfolios, its price will go to unimaginable heights.

Some interesting points. Next question then is: How much privately held gold is there? Well, I believe it's estimated that about 150,000 tons have been mined to date, and it looks like governments directly control about 30,000 tons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_reserve). So, 120,000 tons in private hands. Interestingly, according to that wikipedia page, about 50% of the world's gold exists as jewelry. This is a need bitcoin cannot fill that I hadn't considered.

Oh yeah? I'm gunna sign something with a key holding 1000 coins and wear the message on my shirt. BLING

Someone needs to make an iphone app "BLING verifier"
1537  Economy / Speculation / Re: the real trendline on: August 12, 2012, 06:16:59 PM
It's just a line. It represents nothing but wishful thinking. You could choose any number of random peaks and troughs and run a line through them to show anything you wanted.

Ironically, I tend to agree when I see trendline posts, wishing the poster would zoom the graph out, especially when they show that the price as if it will decrease long term.

It is an all time graph (or close), if you zoom out it just gets littler.
1538  Economy / Speculation / Re: the real trendline on: August 12, 2012, 04:38:02 PM
Your image didn't show up in your post for me.  Here's a re-link in case that's the case for anyone else.

So, in other words, you think we've got some catching up to do.

In other other words it's time to majorly overcorrect!
1539  Economy / Gambling / Re: [vote] bitcoin roulette on: August 12, 2012, 04:33:57 PM
Gambling is fun and that's good enough reason for many, but here's a surprising thought. It can save you time, maybe even money.

Say you need 8BTC to buy a gift for someone from a certain site, but you only have 4. If you just buy the 4 you need you will have to wait (at least leave the house to use bitinstant) 100% of the time. But if you make a roughly 50/50 bet with that 4 to win 8 you'll only have to go out of your way half the time.
1540  Economy / Gambling / Re: www.pon-z.com - The World's First Honest Ponzi Scheme on: August 12, 2012, 04:10:44 PM
If you were going to send 1BTC isn't it better to send .5 and then .5 so that part of your second goes to you, but you end up with the same share? And better yet to break it more and more?
