Even with the qualifier "benevolent" and even if it is technically accurate... in my opinion... that is a terrible metaphor to use. Do you know how many people in our modern world have lost loved ones to cancer? No amount of qualifiers are going to remove the negative psychological weight from a word like that. And surely you must know how the enemies of something like bitcoin would just love to have good key words to jump on and use against it. ( below said in something like a Rush Limbaugh voice ) "Harumpf! And here we have another article where we have another bitcoin "expert", comparing this new "technology", to cancer! People, I ask you!" Yeah that one made me cringe a little. Feel free to take and modify some of these: "like a struggling life form that will survive as long as there is air to breathe" "like a forest that will always regenerate as long as there's a little sunlight" "like a bonfire that will keep burning as long as there is kindling somewhere in the world" "like hot custard that always grows a thick skin, no matter how it gets stirred." "like an Olympic torch that keeps on burning, as long as there is someone to pass it on to."  "Benevolent weed" might be better than cancer. |

Do we have a formal, mathematical proof for that? Do we have comprehensive, published experimental test results which show this? If yes, I would like to learn where to find them. Please point out some sources or references so that I can study them.

Here is what happened. When I saw the news I intended to close the bet by setting the deadline to the previous day but put the wrong date (4/10). Couple hours later noticed that it is still available, so I fixed the deadline (4/9) and system automatically cancelled and refunded the bets you did in the mean time.
Moral of the story: If you see it on the news it is too late to bet. Sooner or later your bets will be cancelled. You wouldn't want others to jump on your bets after the news, right?

What if something that makes it incredibly unlikely, but not 0%? The loss to the early bettors is almost the same, but you surely cannot intervene right? What if Santorum changes his mind or runs under the new party "Christians" after America undergoes a sweeping religious revival? If Obama falls down a 30 foot well and is unconscious but not yet confirmed dead do you honor bets made after that saying he will not be re-elected? Or gets hit by a truck and is in a coma, when do you pull the plug (on the wagers). What if he picks his nose and flicks it on a reporter? I'm having a little fun, but I'm also curious and it does seem like an important thing to know. |

Here's the thing: just because Bitcoin is decentralized like bittorrent, it's not a network like that. A bitcoin transaction is not like downloading files. Normally you can trace file transfers by their origin and who is connected to the file by their IP address. With Bitcoin, there is only one file. It is the block chain, and nearly every bitcoin user has a copy.
To create a transaction requires only the sender to connect to the internet. The recipient of the transaction is merely a bitcoin address that gets added to the block chain by the sender. The recipient only needs to go online when he becomes a sender.
I'm oversimplifying this statement for clarity. The point being that Bitcoin can be very private and even anonymous, though I am advocating neither.
This is an important distinction. You don't NEED to use the bitcoin network directly either. I wonder how long it would take to get in a block if I posted a tx with a nice fee right here in the forum. But beyond that, all the interesting stuff isn't in the chain anyway. |

does anyone else think it's funny that mintchip keeps comparing their presently non-existent product to bitcoin? If I knew nothing of bitcoin I might assume from the mintchip press releases that bitcoin is the gold standard in the digital currency and electronic payment game. It almost seems like they are aspiring to be 'as good as bitcoin!'. Are trying a fight with what they believe to be the dominant digital payment system? And they are talking a whole lot of smack right now. Why do they keep referencing bitcoin? Does the centrally controlled mintchip have an inferiority complex? bitcoin has achieved some great things, mintchip has done nothing more than spreading it's propaganda via a few press releases. From my perspective mintchip has positioned itself in such a way that if it does not achieve full spectrum dominance of bitcoin in every way, shape and form, then their efforts will only serve to legitimize decentralized payment systems (bitcoin) it a really big way.
I was also thinking thoughts like this. Can you imagine if Bitcoin had this much press months BEFORE Satoshi dropped the code? It's not a fair fight, but we're gunna crush it. |

If they know who and where you bought your bitcoins from does it matter if bitcoin itself is anonymous? Once bitcoin leaves the closed ecosytem they can track it at the exit and entry points like they can do with tor.
Huh, I wonder if that will be enough incentive to grow a huge ass internal Bitcoin economy. I'm thinking... yes. |
