Wow where is that from? I have been with Gridcoin for a few months now and I have never heard of this. The client had some synching issues due to the complexity of integrating Boinc, but this has been solved already. Now there are integrated statistics on some of the science projects that users are participating in. There is a lot of cool stuff that no other coin has. Download the client and see for yourself. There was recently an article in a Chinese news site on Gridcoin here: http://media.163.com/14/0106/14/9HTOLTPH00762OM6.htmli wanted to add it at first, but couldn't generate any interest. some chatter about devs being scammers and client being broken.

That command always worked for me. I don't know what to tell you. Start gridcoin with a -salvagewallet command, using the backup wallet. Ok, I used the backup wallet I had made from a few days ago, it syncs up to block 40319 then I get "system error:CDB():can't open database file wallet.dat, error -30974" and then it crashes and I get "A fatal error has occured. Gridcoin can no longer continue safely and will quit. EXCEPTION: St13 runtime_error CDB():can't open database file wallet.dat, error -30974 c:\Program Files (x86)\Gridcoin\gridcoin-qt.exe in Runaway exception"
I was doing a resync and an update a few days back and got these same error messages. I then restarted the client and they went away so I wrote it off as a fluke. I think a fresh install and new wallet would be in order, I would love to recover those 6K though.
Qt just freezes and shuts down

You could do that , but that is only you! Other people need a financial incentive to use Boinc. So by participating in the network yourself, you are giving incentive to the people that would otherwise not run Boinc at all, to actually Run Boinc. Do you see what I am getting at? Also mining secures the blockcahin and makes the network more resistant to any kind of attack, so the hashing by itself has it's uses. I hate to say it, but everything in our current world is run by Greed. Here we can use that Greed and divert a portion of it, maybe not all of it, but a portion to something good. Look at @ our team on the WCG http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=BBNGDQS832If it wasn't for Gridcoin none of that work would have been done in the first place. Hell, I only found out about Boinc because of Gridcon. Prior to that it was not even known to me. Even a lot of people that start using Boinc, over time they either loose interest or the everyday stresses of life just make them forget. So by adding the crypto aspect it makes it a lot more fun to participate in. Another question. Do i have to check the box "Use GPU while computer in use" in the BOINC manager? Or does the mining module on the qt client do all the work?
You do not want to have the box for "Use GPU While Computer is in Use" checked. The way Gridcoin works is you dedicate your CPU cycles to BOINC and you mine Gridcoins with your GPU. Gridcoin also has it's own version of cpu mining which should be re-implemented soon (hopefully). When cpu mining is brought back you will be able to fill in some information on your projects console and you will be rewarded additional GRC based on the amount of work your cpu does for BOINC. So basically i am not dedicating any GPU power towards BOINC. Only my cpu is contributing to BOINC projects?? If that's the case then this coin is not energy efficient at all, its just forcing you to use your cpu for boinc while wasting gpu power on gridcoins, i could be dedicating gpu and cpu power to boinc instead of mining for gridcoins.

Use the backup and rebuild the blockchain from the start and see what happens. Do you have any backups of your wallet files? I backup once per month. I had the same thing happen to me once, when I used my backup everything re synched and was back to normal. Btw what is your hasing speed? over the last 36-48 hours. I fall out of sync 1-2 times a day, that 6K was mined over the last 36-48 hrs or so, I was periodically checking the block explorer and rebuilding the block chain as needed, so I know I wasn't forked for 2 days or something. Yes use your backup and rebuild the blockchain from the start and see what happens.
Hashing speed was around 2400Khs. I do have a backup from a few days ago. This is something I SHOULD know by now, but I have never dealt with it before, is it okay to use a wallet backup from before I mined those blocks?

When did you fall out of sync? and when was the 6k mined? WTF?!?!? I fell out of sync with the block chain so I started rebuilding it, and now all of a sudden the ~6K GRC I had in that wallet is gone. I did a -reindex and it didn't help. I went to my roaming/appdata directory to see if my wallet was missing or something and now I have a wallet.(longstringofnumbers).bak file and a wallet.dat file. What is that .bak file? Never seen that before.
And why is the .bak file all of a sudden 960kb, about the size my wallet.dat used to be, and now my wallet.dat is 80kb?

Maybe the fact that the data folder is on drive E: and the install is in C: might be causing some kind of issue. I managed to get the client sync'd again, by using the .msi, and ensuring the QT was run as Administrator (this was probably the problem before). I'm still getting the crashing when I try to run Gridcoin at the same time as Boinc, though. I've triple checked the Boinc folders in gridcoin.conf, and ensured .NET is up to date (there was an update to run). My gridcoin.conf below.. rpcuser=myrpcuser rpcpassword=myrpcpassword rpcallowip=127.0.0.1 rpcport=myport server=1 poolmining=false restartwallet=0 addnode=98.114.181.178 addnode=76.187.184.27 addnode=66.187.94.194 addnode=76.74.177.224 addnode=84.125.196.167 addnode=71.233.139.62 addnode=72.92.48.105 addnode=72.208.65.226 addnode=77.64.220.124 addnode=50.152.78.46 addnode=207.229.136.136 boincappfolder=C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC boincdatafolder=E:\ProgramData\BOINC Any other ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Should the boinc folders have a trailing slash or not? Have tried with both so that's not the issue, but just want to ensure I've got that right.

did you add the boinc install dir and data dir to gricoin.conf ? I tried to give this a go last night. It took a while to get the client sync'd but figured that out eventually, then got BOINC installed and working ok.
When I try to run the QT again to try mining, however, it crashes on startup - every time. Any ideas?

If Gridcoin can implement a pay per share system that would be amazing.

Yes looks like difficulty is rising too. The days of easy Gridcoins are going away. ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Nice tutorial, hopefully it will help the new people.

I think we need a comprehensive instruction manual or some kind or video tutorial for the new people. This is just way too difficult to set up.. i'm getting gray hairs already.

I always run cgminer externally to Gridcoin. So far has proven better for me. I think I'm making progress. lol
I'm not running an external version of cgminer. I'm trying to run it within the Gridcoin mining module.
However I have a message on the bottom left of my screen where it should say "mining", it is saying process has exited, so the requested information is not available. There are no hashing showing so I don't think it is doing anything.
On the configuration screen it shows my GPU and I've enabled it. I gave it values for worksize, intensity, and lookback. I did not give it a concurrency value.
I also set the config file so it would pool mine because I was hoping to get some idea of I was actually mining. lol
Any ideas?
Regarding some other things that don't look right. My wallet was in sync but as I was waiting to see if something happened with the miners. After a while the wallet showed out of sync and showed it was 3 blocks behind and seemed to get stuck there. When I shut it down and restarted it again the wallet immediately showed it was sync'd again.
Edit: After the restart it got out of sync again fairly quickly.

Wow nice. I don't know that site, is it really popular in China?

Just get the latest one and you are good to go. Thanks Traderman! I saw that link and was unsure because of this line in the instructions. "Download the BOINC 6.6.38 file (current version) and install it." However BOINC 6.6.38 isn't the current version anymore. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) I'll get 6.6.38 just to make sure I'm on the same version as the instructions. 6.6.38 is almost off BOINC's download page though. There have been several newer versions since these instructions were written. Thanks for the reply!

Welcome to the tream! This instruction manual might also help: http://www.gridcoin.us/download/guiminer_scrypt_alpha.txtI found Gridcoin when I was grumbling about the lack of information in CureCoin's thread. Someone in a chat room mentioned Gridcoin so I finally read through this entire thread. Let me say first off, Rob, you are top notch. Very responsive and you obviously work your a*s off!
So I will be joining the fray as well. I really like what you are doing here. I don't understand the idea behind most crypto-currencies. There are just too many clones now with new one's popping up every week or even every day. However, I believe Gridcoin could literally change the world and that is why I'm so excited about it.
So I've got three computers now (not the most powerful) and I will begin working to set them up but I've also got three more in route that are set up with more intense mining in mind. So I hope to be a contributor quite soon and will join the team when I get things working. Again I think the development team and overall support is top notch. I just don't see what else people can ask for.
I am super excited about this project! Well done!
One quick question and I apologize in advance if this was listed before but there has been a great deal of changes so I want to make sure I understand how this works. If I'm running three computers do I need to have a wallet installed on each computer? From what I've read I believe that is the case but I want to be sure because I would prefer to have a single wallet if possible.

Are you running latest version? I am running several rigs and I got no problems. Yes,I run Gridcoin-qt by itself , no other clients. But it doesn't work.
I want to know: If my gridcoin wallet is always out of sync, can I receive or send Grc?
