Might be a naive question for some - but why is anonymity such a priority for BTC ? Why is Amir concentrating on it with Dark Wallet ? How will the anonymity of transactions benefit the average Jo (who probably won't have 2 bits to scratch his arse with anyway) ? I can see how it would be of benefit to the wealthy and their respective tax liabilities  Wink

Is it a security issue ? Or is it ideological ?

It just seems to me that the main benefactors of BTC transaction anonymity would be the privileged class/wealthy/elite etc.

I don't ask the question to make a rhetorical point - I'm guessing the likes of Amir must have a good reason for it - I'm just not sure I understand that reason at this point  Undecided

When there is no anonymity there is regulation. When there is regulation it defeats the purpose of crypto.
1443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anonymity on: February 19, 2014, 10:52:33 PM
Blacklisting will not happen and will not work and will not be accepted by anyone.

The idea being that if I (Practical Dreamer) deposit 2 BTC to Wikileaks, and its traceable back to me - then those 2 BTC then become worth a different amount (less) on the open market than they would if they had been 2 BTC transferred from the Queen of England to Barack Obama ??
 How does that work ?
Suppose instead that if you steal 2 BTC from me, that I can report the theft and get those coins black-listed, meaning they cannot be converted into pounds sterling (my jurisdiction): then those coins become worth a bit less. Even more so if Britain shares its blacklist with Europe and America. We can imagine a world in which most miners are required to refuse to accept transactions involving blacklisted coins, and where the "dark" miners that accept them also charge higher transaction fees.

That is the kind of evolution of Bitcoin that some governments seem to think is desirable for purposes of preventing money laundering. That is, to make it harder for wrong-doers to profit from their crimes. They may legislate to that end, and require miners and exchanges within their jurisdiction to conform. It would mean bitcoin would be less fungible.

Zerocoin from what I have read is still theoretical and the math behind it has not been tested for loopholes yet. There are issues with the block chain bloating as well.
So it is a long way away from a fully functional crypto.

There is a new anonymous cryptocurrency called Darkcoin that uses the "coinjoin" technology. Sound promising so far. There are many reason to have an anonymous blockchain. Think Wikileaks, Gambling, Investigative Journalism etc...

Article: http://razorsforex.blogspot.com/2014/02/darkcoin-anonymous-cryptocurrency.html

What happened to that zerocoin or whatever it was that they were meant to be developing on top of the blockchain or something?

That sounds great, I just added my vote on your thread. The logo for the exchange with the guy in the chair with the laptop is pretty cool!

Hi guys,

Just dropping by to let you guys know that we are launching with 10 news coins and have already decided on 5. We do like this coin and the community and considering adding to to our exchange. www.lazycoins.com https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=471779.0

Gridcoin needs to be added.
1448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: February 19, 2014, 01:31:57 PM
That is a good idea. I guess we should write them an email or something.

We need to get coindesk to do an article on gridcoin. Anyone know how to do this?

Also, are we ready for this? I'm all for helping this coin get all the attention it deserves, but if the software isn't ready yet, we should be patient.
1449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: February 19, 2014, 03:57:57 AM
Maybe 1 block per day, so around 150.

how many GRC/day do you think i'd be getting with 1.2Mh?

This is the Darkcoin forum!!!

Tips is dead on the exchanges I had some and I sold it and bought Darkcoin instead.

Tips is dead on cryptsy and it is dead on coinedup.

Guys you are all in the dark! Tipscoin already has the mixer/enrypted transactions that darkcoin is supposedly working on! Stop speculating on the last horse to leave the starting line! lol  It was released yesterday... fully integrated wallet mixer. Tipscoin (aka fedoracoin) version 0.6  check it out at  http://fedoraco.in/, cheers!

tips mixing service cost 2% fee!! And tips is based off old GPU melting scrypt algo. I don't think tips has anti multipool. It's definitely not asic resistant. I like tips too, I think it is a great coin... but darkcoin is in another league right now.

Yea it does cost 2%, but if you operate your own mixing then its free. It is better than anti multipool... you actually want the multipools because they bring a lot of hashrate, what you dont want is them to leave, because it slows down the rest of block finding after until the difficulty readjusts..

last week Tipscoin implemented the gravity pool algorythm

so now, there is barely any effect when multipools leave... tips is actually mined more than doge now by multipools, its the most profitable coin last time i checked thats why they are on it.... makes sense to be most profitable, no?

As for asic resistant, who cares? its irrelevant who mines as long as someone does and it doesnt get more than 50% of the network hashrate. In fact when asics are pointed towards a coin it increases it value because it means its valuable enough to point asics at it. look at bitcoin....  Look at bitcoin first, look at tipscoin mixer, first... imo
1451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: February 18, 2014, 04:03:59 PM
Haven't really used it.

Hi guys,

Another place where Gridcoin can already be traded is here:
cryptotc.us

Rob, can you please add it to the first post?

Andrew.

Has anyone had any successful trades and withdrawals at this exchange yet...?
1452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | Anonymous (alpha) | KGW | No Premine | ASIC Resistant on: February 18, 2014, 03:57:50 PM
Mine too and they draw a lot less power too.

Current Difficulty    140.4987857 WOW Looks like the big GPU farm guys are starting to get into the game.

This guy is number one on the official pool:
1       zyxy123    144,004    494.844

That is a lot of hashing power!!

My graphics cards love darkcoin. They run 25c cooler. LMAO  Grin

I really think we need to make the mining community aware of this.

They'll figure it out sooner or later, for now let's leave the difficulty where it is. Wink
1453  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why you should be Buying DARKCOIN on: February 18, 2014, 02:00:23 PM
Not yet implemented?Huh?

Dude, read the first page of the official Darkcoin thrad and educated yourself instead of making on the fly statments.

The "dark send" is already working!!!!

Darkcoin currently makes no sense.

the 2 main things that set it apart from other coins are not yet implemented:

Encrypted transaction network: Work In Progress
Anonymous blockchain using coinjoin technology: Pre-Alpha

Zerocoin will be released soon and it has all of these things taken care of .
and apparently can make any coin transaction anonymous through an integrated layer

1455  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin Explodes +180.09 % in 1 day! on: February 17, 2014, 08:43:47 PM
There are many legitimate reasons to have a fully anonymous currency. All the reasons TOR is usefull, the same apply to Darkcoin.

Cryptohunter, if this become possible - what's the difference to cash money? This movement is much bigger than bitcoin, it's an evolution of technology and a loophole in our current dying era that has been corrupted and controlled by our 'real'(FRB) economies for centuries.
You just sound like an old aunty when you try to prevent this movement from it's natural development. What's happening is not in the control of anyone, its inevitable.

There is no different from cash as far as the anon respect, however you don't have to convince me. You will need to convince them.
Besides transfering very large chunks of cash presents problems. Transfering large amounts of dark currency does not have these problems.

I am NOT on the side of anyone except myself. I legitimately worry dark anon currency is a big threat to crypto at this stage. You don't see it that way but i think you under estimate how quickly they can crush the flourishing interest in crypto.

I agree someone will always want to create anon currency, but it must be a minority not become the norm if you want crypto accepted mainstream. This is just a fact not my opinion.

Do you honestly believe anon currency will meet with any gov approval?? please you have to be realistic.

I know it is hard to create a coin that stand out from being copy and paste and this is dark coins way of trying to stand out.

However people need to understand that although it is a cool feature and for most they would not abuse, but it has a big downside which far outweighs the upside.

Sure if darkcoin does not do it others will so they may as well go first...... i hope others see that it is not really essential and provides no upside for the average user.

When anoncoin came out i was onside thinking too what a cool feature, after watching the hearings i see now that feature is not worth the risk to crypto.
1456  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin Explodes +180.09 % in 1 day! on: February 17, 2014, 08:22:59 PM
I agree, this whole movement has implications not just for money, the blockchain technology of Bitcoin can be applied to many other things. Many people have not
come to grips with this yet. This is not just about money or currencies.

Gambling!

We are not talking about the price spike, that is just the after effect. The main thing is the anon blockchain and "coinjoin" making fully anonymous. The implications are pretty interesting to say the least.

Spikes like these are nothing to be noted. Come back in 3 months and see where price is.

the implications seem dangerous/risky and already essentially pre-banned .... what positive implications do you see for the average user of having a dark currency?

Just one useful purpose for having it non traceable for the average person?
1458  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin Explodes +180.09 % in 1 day! on: February 17, 2014, 07:54:49 PM
I think the politicians have a lot to gain from cryptos even more so the anon types. Did you think of that? Publicly they can make all kinds of claims and strong worded statements, but behind the scenes is a very different story. Those public hearings are nothing but BS and theater.

I agree with you on the whole anon issue. But histroy has shows that once something is banned it grows even more. I think Governments are treading very
carefully because they realize how the precarious the whole situation is for them. Right now distrust of Gov is at all time high, if they come out swinging big against crypto there is a big chance it will backfire in a big way. I think we are in uncharted waters here. How this whole thing will develop is any one's guess.

sounds another vertcoin chart..... up up up .......weeeeeee......................................

Where are the vertcoin pumpers that showed up after the first nudge up?

The US seems to be the only pro crypto gov, the others are not issuing outright bans because they believe they could lose out against the US.

The US do not like the sound of dark currency. You piss them off, they ban. The others ban next.... end of crypto.

Pushing anon currency is not a wise move, unless you need to remain anon. If you just want to see crypto advance and make some money along the way....forget pushing too hard in that direction.

I'm not one for all this gov spying on us in everything we do for no reason, but encrypted dark currency?? ....this will not be permitted you can be sure. Dark coin and others now coming with coin mixing etc are good ideas but really if they get too big you can be sure they will damage crypto. They will get taken down and if it seems difficult to weed them out from BTC and the others ...expect a blanket ban.
If you watched those hearings....again and again......we will not accept anon currency their message was crystal clear.

For all those saying what can they do about it.....they could smash crypto like a fly right now. The currency is decentralised but every mechanism it relies upon to make it useful in anyway are not.

Take this forum out and banks complete ban on anything crypto related = the end.

Darkcoin is another pump over nothing any coin can work on achieving the same thing, bitcoin/ltc is they wished. It could go up another couple of days before the big smack down like i said would happen with vert.

If the US gov come out swinging at crypto.... crypto gets crushed back to being a very fringe interest. Think BTC back at $1-$20 range or less.

In the hearing over and over it was said.......... we will NEVER permit anon currency. That was crystal clear. I see more and more of this anon fascination, which really for most of us is not actually essential. Why even jeopardise a good thing we have going here. I am totally shocked the US has been as open about it as they have. I though a big slap down was coming on the first hearing. So did a lot of others but then when it was positive 100>>>>1000 in days.

Let's not rock the boat, .... those that need to have anon currency even at the cost of losing out on early adoption to crypto need to be separated as far from mainstream crypto as possible.

BTC is moving towards full transparency ... alts need to stay as they but certainly not all start implementing dark measures or else you will see ALTS or even crypto get the axe in short order.

If you think the gov is risking anything at all by slapping BTC and alts into oblivion you are wrong. They risk nothing, most people don't even understand what btc is or are not interested.

I hope people wake up to this very fast before alts and maybe even btc meets a swift end.

If there was any real need for dark currency then i can see the point in risking it, but since for 99.9999% of people just mining a few coins to get some beer money or a new car or even a deposit on a home.....there is no point risking it for no gain.

Anyway i leave it there, i don't support dark currency at this point since i see not reason to have it and the US gov have made things clear, remain transparent and traceable or else you're going down. I would rather not pull the dragons tail.
