Anybody using offspring?  It's seems offspring can only recognize the old numerical address and can't send nxt to the newer apha-numerical address.  Anybody have this issue or this only happening to me?

I have asked the Offspring dev on nxtforum to follow this up: https://nxtforum.org/alternative-clients/(windows-mac-linux)-open-source-cross-platform-offspring-237/msg37914#msg37914

Interesting...

You can still find updates on twitter

https://twitter.com/nxtcommit

Nice, thank you, missed that!

Looks like the next release will contain:

- Digital goods store
- Alias transfer
- Economic clustering
- Support for PoW coins on top of Nxt
- Encrypted messaging
- The last trap for clones will be disabled

Did I forget something? (hopefully it will already have the new corporate design!)

Looks like our devs shifted up some gears again.

Mintpal adding Nxt!

I know I know, not this again  Grin Here is the short history so everyone is up to speed.

A few months ago, Nxt won a vote to get added to Mintpal with some people using donating BTC for votes. Mintpal tried and for whatever reason, couldn't add Nxt so they refunded the money. So nice guys  Grin and that's where it ended.

Something happened today that got their attention (  Cheesy  ) and they tweeted Fatih87SK and Berzerk asking if they wanted Nxt to be listed. But on the condition a 1 BTC payment to cover implementation costs. Naturally, this annoyed some and others didn't mind.

It was too contentious for community funding so the 1 BTC was crowd sourced from the pockets of Nxters who believe it is a good idea. The Nxt is being exchanged as I type and will be sent very soon. I saw in all the discussion they could have Nxt set up in two days so we could have it by Sunday.

another good news.
This would've been valuable insider information if it was kept secret.  Grin

Transparency is good. If we did that CfB wouldn't be angry with us, he wouldn't shout, he would just be very disappointed

Is anyone interested in  getting a NXTKey?

http://postimg.org/image/ji0yiugzv/ (Couldn't get it to display in the thread) Huh

Quote
It is safe against key loggers and spyware which is trying to get your passphrase! The passphrase will not leave the NXTkey. Transactions are send to the device over USB, signed in the device with the passphrase and then send back to the client.

Gr4ssh0pper has put a lot of time into developing it from scratch (making his on pcb circuit boards, programming etc) and is looking for community funding. Seems positive so far  Grin

Also, you can link the description of the clone attack from the Nxt Glossary >>>> https://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Glossary

Based on CfB's posts...

****

Clone Attack

Clone Attack is a scheme for stealing NXTs through the use of a Nxt Clone and can only be successful if you use the same passphrase on Nxt and on a Nxt Clone that uses the same transaction format. Very Important: Do not use your Nxt Account passphrase for anything but your Nxt account. The Clone Attack is a very simple attack so could become common if people are reluctant to generate new Strong Passphrases and reuse their Nxt Passphrase in any Clone. It is described below using a fictitious clone named NEX:

1. You use the same account passphrase in NEX as you have in Nxt.

2. The attacker sends you an amount, say 10000NEX, perhaps at the launch of the Clone, as a giveaway or as part of day to day transactions.

3. Later, the attacker offers to buy 5000NEX from you for 0.01 BTC (this will always be a generous offer for the Clone).

4. The Attacker sends you the Bitcoins in advance and you send him 5000NEX.

5. The attacker then broadcasts the NEX transaction you sent them onto Nxt network, .

Result: 5000NXT is removed from your Nxt account and you only received a small percentage of its value. Again, very important: Do not use your Nxt Account passphrase for anything but your Nxt Account. Anyone can broadcast transactions from a Clone into Nxt and vice versa, if the clone doesn't change the transaction format used in Nxt. So anyone who uses the same Account Passphrase in both can lose NXTs.

The transaction signed by the client includes a timestamp (seconds since genesis block), and as all clones so far have a timestamp more than one day in the future compared to Nxt, why would such a transaction if rebroadcast into the Nxt network be accepted?

Using the same pass phrase is playing with fire. I just don't understand why that attack would work.

You can resurrect the thread here : https://nxtforum.org/alternate-cryptocurrencies/nxt-clones/

The attack stuff starts on page 2 I think. Two Nxters were trying to prove it was possible but I think they both got busy  Grin

I have a quick question. If one were to use the same address/seed on the nxt network and on a fork (some NXT clone) could this in someway be abused? Asking because I recall reading something like this but i can't find it.

Yes! If the fork uses the same address format and protocol (NXTquant and number variables).

Just use different passwords for all forks, then you are good!

Asking you this because NTX:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=625668.0

Is telling people its OK to use their usual NXT account for the fork they planning to launch. Is this a fishing attempt (so to speak?) See the faq at 2/3 of the OP announcement.

Maybe he doesn't know anybetter or the prefix really makes broadcasting NTX transactions in NXT impossible.

Just don't risk it and make a new account Wink

Damn. I just, once in my life, wanted to yell SCAM in big red letters. Guess I'll just call them out on the issue instead Smiley Thanks.

There are plenty of threads on this board where you can yell scam and be 90% right Wink

I yelled 'ATTENTION' in HUGE red letters. Sort of satisfactory.

On a sidenote. I bought some NXT a very long time ago but the wallet back then sucked on so many different levels that I turned to dgex to sell it off at 3k satoshi. Dgex back then sucked at so many levels also that I turned my back to all things related to NXT and vowed to never return. Since I'm in the process of securing my NEM stake through the AE I was more or less forced to take that back today. This Nxtra wallet does in no way resemble what I went through back then. Its all slick as hell and it can be piloted by human beings. Go forth and multiply.

Hugs,

Mrrr

I missed it but...

The standard fee for Nxt will also be lowered in the next release. Wesley said so much in the weekly hang out with Tai Zen.

Something else to look forward too  Grin

I am looking forward to that. The current fee is just way too high, psychologically and financially.

PS: I transfered 100kNXT today and had a weak moment and sent with the "standard" 100 NXT fee.... motherfucker was I angry with myself...

I hope the drop is to .01. That seems to be the fee with most coins. I know that this is the ONLY money that will be given for forging since no new coins are mined but the only people forging probably know that forging isn't really making the rich.

NSC are forged with every block found, and those NSC go for 10-30 NXT, so forging is very profitable at this moment!

So, even if that is true, the transfer fee can be lower and it won't affect the NSC if I understand what it is.

exactly! That is also a reason why I promote the fee reduction so much since months..

Do I sense some jumping on of the band wagon going on? Cheesy

NSC has only been around a couple of weeks, just after AE launch Smiley

Anyone could sum up to me the recent prise rise's reasons? Something new happened recently?

Just a perfect storm brewing. And it was a first gush of wind, nothing particularly interesting, same old, like any perfect storm Smiley

Perfect storm is actually a pretty good way of putting it.
I don't know details but I think it could be summarised something like "Step change in awareness, usability and availability very soon, plus the normal crypto speculation pump that happens when any market moves unexpectedly."

At the risk of fanning the flames of speculation...

*snip*
and
*snip*

I was going to post the links but changed my mind, I think that actually would be fanning the flames. If you look around nxtforum, there are some popular announcement threads.

There are 3-4 big announcements coming, the first one next week. No-one knows what they are but they are big and the companies involved need to get their "ducks in a row".

Additionally, the launch of the Digital Goods Store, Alias Trading confirmed for the next release and possibly Monetary System and a cool new skin.

Whether they are big enough to justify the rise, who knows  Cheesy

I've been reading some of the posts from the original [ANN] thread and I'm hooked. Just a question about the current dev team though. Is it true that the original developer - BCNext, is no longer involved in the project? And Come-from-Beyond is running things now?

Jean Luc is the lead developer. CfB is still heavily involved.

Wesley is the client developer

There are other developers involved on some way (l8orre, CIYAM, jl777, ChuckOne, doctorevil, mczarnek, kushti)

Oh that's good then. I just wish the original dev didn't leave so early. Even Satoshi stayed around for a couple of years. Sad

BCNext delivered a single Java file with the basis of Nxt and notes to the community to Come-from-Beyond. Everything after that was done by the community. Come-from-Beyond said BCNext followed the posts on the megathread, he was watching our discussion.

Nxt has many references to George Orwell's book '1984' within it, a book where Big Brother was always watching. As CIYAM pointed out once, a theme in the book is whether Big Brother really existed at all.

When BCNext 'left', it caused much more of a stir outside of the community than it did within it  Cheesy I wouldn't worry about BCNext and his legacy, the direction of Nxt is in the hands of everybody who wants to get involved.

If there is something you want to see in Nxt, go to the Tech Fund committee for the cash and get a dev on the jobs board and go for it  Grin Or, as many are doing, launch it on the AE and fund it yourself. Exciting times.

P.s. Do you remember the useful role of Randall Stephens in the Shawshank Redemption? A hard man to find, could be relevant here  Grin The ghost of BCNext could still be walking among us, protected by the distance from his work he now enjoys.
(P.p.s ^ This ^ is speculation on my part )

I have a little security concern. Is this is been discussed already:

Many people make typical copy/paste error in NXT-client and have extra space at the start/end of the password (or both). Now that gives them new 64-bit typo-account, cause there is no outgoing transaction. If evil hackcer can crack that 64-bit account/password, it is easy for hacker just remove the extra spaces and gain access to real 256-bit account with balance and check for other accounts without the spaces  Shocked

Or did i understand this correctly ?

I think what you describe could be feasible one day. Eadeqa has been seen discussing the numbers on cracking 64 bit accounts. An astute hacker could check for spaces before/after/both any account they crack.

But...  Grin

Based on the top 310 64-bit account balances and today's computers, if you could make 250 million guesses per second it would take 4 years to bruteforce just one account. If you had that amount of computing power, you would make much more mining Bitcoin. So you are are safe for fair a while yet.

I also vaguely remember a discussion on increasing the security of these accounts (to 80-bit, I think). I will try to find the link. This will push the date even further into the future.

If you have any concerns, create a new account and use programs like keepass to manage your account passphrases. Every new account will give you peace of mind about inputting 'space' errors you might have done in the past.

Oh, great to hear that it's not a big problem yet. I use LastPass for basic email and other not money worthy things, but don't want to trust any 3rd party for my future millions so i have super-duper password system with partly generated from unique file, partly copy/paste and partly inputing from my memory with virtual keyboard...I know it 's too paranoid  Grin , but i think it's safe because i don't have the whole password saved anywhere.

I have thought about this some more.

Let's say your passphrase is "dog" for simplicity and you have accidentally used "dog_" in the past. In the unlikely event a hacker cracks "dog_" it would show an account with zero Nxt in it and without any transactions. So there is nothing there to explicitly signal that "dog1" is an active account. There are an infinite number of passwords with a space after it so the chance of a collision between the hacked account and an active one seems vanishingly small. The 'space errors' on passwords happen but I don't think they are very common.

The same argument could be made for passwords that end in 1. People are told that passwords should be alpha numeric (at least) so the password "dog1" if found, should be checked for "dog" also. But it is more likely to be one in a list infinite passwords that end in a 1.

In summary, I don't think this will be an issue in the lifespan of the planet. Especially if you move your Nxt to a new account now and again with care and/or use keepass etc

Phew! Now I am going for a lie down...  Grin

Edit: I am probably about to get slammed by the Maths guys for numerous glaring (to them  Grin) issues and/or just because I back my feeling up with no maths at all  Cheesy Cheesy
