1941  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Nvidia more efficient to mine scrypt? on: February 21, 2014, 01:50:52 PM
The wattage is nice but Frys is selling the 750 for $160+tax.  I could get a 7870 for that price.
1942  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: how big is big enough on: February 21, 2014, 01:45:52 PM
You're using the wrong hardware to mine bitcoin.  Bitcoin is now relegated to those who have or will have efficient ASICs, not low capability erupters.
1943  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Rig doesn't automatically connect to internet on: February 21, 2014, 01:42:22 PM
Why does your rig kee[ losing power?   Does the router lose power too?
1944  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Issues with GPUs on: February 21, 2014, 01:40:36 PM
Which afterburner and windows versions are you using?

Afterburner won't display VRMs temp AFAIK, try GPUz
1945  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Network hasrate gone way up! on: February 21, 2014, 01:34:08 PM
2nd one has been speculated as KNC for awhile. and they've never denied it. It's assumed they've basically taken all their 28nm overstock and started mining. (Don't think that's their only address and pool they're using also)

Shadily Staying in compliance with their posted "promise" of not selling any products until Neptune to keep original purchasers ROI possible, and those interests in tact..
Unfortunately mining for themselves instead, which completely undermines (no pun intended) this.  Even worse so.   And also flies in the face of their "promise" of never mining more than 5%.  Could be speculation, but it is interesting they've been mum on the whole subject.
Lies and more lies more likely.

Funny thing is KNC will most probably be regarded as a worse company for BTC than BFL when all the dust settles, although I'm sure many buyers who got left stranded will disagree..

KNC is completely skyrocketing the hash for short-term gains, while BTC price stays stagnant and declines, making people less and less interested in mining for themselves and spreading the network more evenly, and across many points, something essential to decentralization if you ask me.  The future will be centralized hot spots of hashing power, whether state backed or backed by investors.  Who will give out cloud shares as they seem fit and at their price.  Essentially another version of a hierarchical bank, bonds, or better yet a public stock.

I think KNC would have to start a war or kill a few people to go below BFL's public standing.
1946  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Could the Bitcoin difficulty go down? on: February 21, 2014, 01:30:25 PM
If price stays a $600-700 for another 6 months, what are you projections for hashrate/difficulty?
Current upwards almost vertical line is unsustainable if price doesn't catch up.

Once again you are failing to take into consideration that miners have been bought and paid for beyond this point.  When someone gets the miner that they paid thousands of dollars for months and months ago they are turning it on regardless of what the btc to usd price is that day.

But what about 1) electricity cost, if daily bitcoin rewards coming from mining = $21->$20->$19->$18->$17 due to growing difficulty, and electricity is constant $20/day, that's losing money at some point, no matter that the hardware is fully paid for.
2) new miners will stop ordering new hardware, since the price is not catching up and profitability is close to zero after electricity or even negative.

I am not saying everyone will stop mining, but hashrate increased 10x over just 3-4 months, it can't go like that forever unless the price catches up, just laws of economics. It can only grow till it's at least marginally profitable. Just like it did go down in the past, in can go down again, before it can go up again when the price has caught up.

6 months of current level of bitcoin price can make a lot of miners re-think if they should temporarily suspend operations or keep losing money.

As it is currently, mining income easily exceeds electricity costs.  See my post above.  When the electricity costs exceed revenue the person will sell the miner to somebody who has cheaper power or will take the miners offline.  But those would be 1st gen ASICs which are becoming increasingly insignificant to the total power.

ASICs were made for Bitcoin.  The only time they stop mining is when Bitcoin dies or the miner dies.
1947  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is mining for a day at Full speed the same as mining for 2 days at half speed? on: February 19, 2014, 04:31:07 AM
I just found out that if I lower my GPu speed by 20%, I can save like 35% of electricity.

While this could be possible if you're pushing you PSU or cooling to the limits it should not happen that way.  clock speeds more or less control wattage usage in a linear fashion - double clock speeds and double your wattage.  Voltage needs to be squared when control wattage usage.  So 50% voltage is 0.5x0.5 = 0.25 or 25% of the wattage.

So if you take a card that normally runs 1.0v and clock it down to 0.8v but keep the same clocks, you should be lowering the power for the core by 0.8x0.8=64% of previous core usage.  Of course other card components will still use the same power like the memory and the fan (assuming same RPM).
1948  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Could the Bitcoin difficulty go down? on: February 18, 2014, 07:38:43 AM
The only reason is went down with GPUs was because GPUs had an option of doing something other than mining.  As far as I can tell SHA256 are going to be mining coins or going bust.  The only time they would go offline is if they die or if the owner thinks electricity is too high - in which case he sells them to somebody with cheap electricity (assuming shipping is worth it).

Don't expect difficulty to go down, ever.
1949  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: First mining rig psu question on: February 18, 2014, 07:29:59 AM
If you undervolt the 280X you should be able to run it 1-2 years no problem since each card would pull 250W or less leaving 250W for system and component degradation.
1950  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Butterflylabs - Scam - sue on: February 18, 2014, 07:26:06 AM
There are a couple threads in the custom hardware forum.  Litigation would probably cost you more than you would recoup (don't plan on recouping lost earnings since that is 20/20 hindsite and usually thrown out in court).  As a BFL idiot myself (my fault for falling for their preorder scam - shame on me for the 1st order) I understand your anger, but chalk it up to a learning experience and recognize that there is evil in this world  Cheesy
1951  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is mining for a day at Full speed the same as mining for 2 days at half speed? on: February 18, 2014, 07:22:41 AM
As noted above the difficulty change would be the biggest factor.

I can only assume the reason to mine at 1/2 speed would be because of varying electric rates based on time.

Something like that, yeah Wink

Hehe you trying to be sneaky and stealth mine on somebody else's property?  Be warned that is considered theft in most countries unless you have consent.

If you're not stealing, an easier option would be to undervolt the card (if possible) and it should put out a lot less heat since power is determined by the sqaure of the voltage as opposed to linearly with the clock speed.  A drop of 0.1v or 0.2v on the core will put out a lot less heat and then u don't need to spin the fan hard, you just mine about 80-85% of max speed.

Hehe, no I am not trying to be sneaky.
Where I live we have options for electricity tariffs so from around 10 in the evening till 7 in the morning is dirt cheap.
From 7 in the morning till 10 in the evening though is expensive.
So I was kind of looking into that option but not sure yet.

Yeah you can go ahead and turn on/off the machine during the best mining times.  If you stick to a large pool like WemineLTC and mine Litecoin you should have minimal variability - the only difference would be trying to mine during lower difficulty swings.  Bust out the calculator after every difficulty change to make sure mining is cheaper than outright buying coins.

1954  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: February 17, 2014, 08:51:31 AM
How long have you been using those RM750s? I've heard they're not as good as the rest of the Corsair OEM models using Seasonic or CWT stuff.

We have 5 rigs like this running 24/7 for 6 weeks, and the RM750 never failed so far (in fact nothing failed at all).
I had problems only with PSU Lepa 1600W, which where failing all the time because of low 5V amperage capabilities (for risers).

Eric

Interesting the LEPA 1600 gave you problems.  They're sold out everywhere for people making 5x280x rigs.
1955  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Watts a typical house can handle? on: February 17, 2014, 08:48:42 AM
If you're tripping breakers you're already going too far (unless somebody used a blender or microwave or some other short term high power device).
1956  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: putting PSUs in right order on: February 17, 2014, 08:46:21 AM
It does not really make sense to do this by brand. Take Corsair for example. There is a big difference in quality between the Corsair AX series and the Corsair CX series.

I agree with you up to a point.

you have brands that make good stuff and not so good stuff. and you have brands that have not so good stuff, and even worse things.

my question was: of all those things mentioned there, what will you use to mine? in range around 750w.
brands and series names included...

everything that can help is appreciated.

i am using raidmax 850w for one overclocked ant. he is taking 500w from raidmax, so i assume that it  can go 24/7. but i have seen some topics around the net that ppl have unpleasant surprise of being near buy when they catch on fire...

or even worse surprise coming home and ..... well you can guess...

and i would like to avoid that.

Oh God no!!!!  STOP!!!  I don't think there's a single Raidmax out that that is reliable.  They're all OEM junk.  If you don't care if the unit catches on fire then you can continue with it, but if it's in house with people I would switch PSUs.

Here's a good review site for PSUs.  He actually tests the PSUs by torturing them and then he does a teardown.  A lot of the info is overkill but knowing the max power, 12V regulation and so forth may help you plan rigs.  a bad PSU can make rig building a pain in the ass.
1957  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: is there any way to check that how much GHS your computer? on: February 17, 2014, 08:34:28 AM
i have dell optiplex gx620 with 2.2ghz processor

Eh that machine is utterly useless for mining (I have 5 of those laying around).  It can be used to control an ASIC miner which you would have to buy.  Please see the hardware/custom hardware forum for more info on the available miners.
1958  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: is there any way to check that how much GHS your computer? on: February 17, 2014, 08:03:39 AM
Well if you are mining the software should state it clearly.

If you're asking what potential your machine has for mining scrypt - you need to list the video card and power supply being used.
1959  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Noob questions on: February 17, 2014, 08:01:58 AM
I agree with the above assessment.  Unless you have nearly free power it will take a lot longer than 80 days with 20% difficulty increases every 12 days - and that's for fiat ROI.  You will never get BTC ROI unless the miner was 1/2 retail or something.
1960  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: looking for a buddy to help me mine slush's pool on: February 17, 2014, 07:59:01 AM
I would sell you mining power as a 1 month contract  Grin
and how much do you charge?

Sorry, I left off a "r" off you.  I meant you should sell your hash.  Usually contacts pay better than mining for youself, but I don't know if anybody would buy 333MH/s - put it out there and see.
