Voted.

If the entire Bitcoin community votes, this would be amazing!

2128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [SOLVED] Should I bring the blockchain to a new OS? on: July 25, 2012, 12:51:43 AM
Get a 8GB drive. They cost like 7 bucks now at Walmart.

Oh and I figure out my issue with the thumb drive for all you that know i had an issue :-)
The exact size of the thumb drive Smiley.

There's already a whole bunch of stuff on it though, so the blockchain (2+ GB) won't fit.
2129  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Where are you ideoligcally on: July 25, 2012, 12:50:27 AM
Call me far, far left ideoligcally (off the chart). In theory, I don't believe in property at all (everything is the property of Earth and everyone should be able to use it without restraint). Also, I'm pretty far down as well.

Practically (i.e., what I believe is the best possible), I'm here:

Thanks guys. I'm finished the backups now, and decided the blockchain is too big to fit on the same thumb drive. It's more convienient and probably safer to redownload it.
2131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Should I bring the blockchain to a new OS? on: July 25, 2012, 12:22:06 AM
I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on my Windows box soon, and I heard that bitcoin runs on Linux too. I have the wallet.dat on a USB stick ready to be moved over already. I was wondering if I should do the same with the blockchain: will it still work on a new OS, and is it worth the trouble?

I am not sure how it works but there is a blockchain out there on github that you can check out.
Since the entire point is to save bandwidth, downloading a blockchain on github is not a very attractive choice for me.

Solution:

It's not worth the trouble.

2134  Other / Meta / Subfora to add on: July 24, 2012, 11:43:24 PM
With Bitcointalk's one millionth post, it seems we've reached the point where some boards are just too big. Here are some of my ideas for splitting up.

Legend:
Bold Red: Hyperactive (>200000 posts)
Red: Urgent (>100000 posts)
Brown: Potential threat (>50000 posts)

1. Bitcoin Discussion
177249 posts as of this posting.

The board that has the most posts also happens to be the second-most general (Off-topic, of course, is more general). Bitcoin Discussion currently has four subfora: Press, Legal, Meetups, and Important Announcements. I propose the following to ease activity in this board:

  • Add new subforum: Security
  • Add new subforum: Adoption
  • Move new threads that belong in other boards into the other boards more frequently. To accomplish this, I suggest appointing some new moderators in charge of moving threads away.

Part of the reason Bitcoin Discussion is so big is because... it is too big. A thread is most likely to get attention if it is posted in Bitcoin Discussion. Conversely, threads don't often get attention for too long: none of the top ten threads are located in Bitcoin Discussion.

2. Newbies
105067 posts as of this posting.

Part of the reason Newbies is so gigantic is because there's a much larger audience if threads are posted there. The other reason is a large amount of questioning and technical support. If it is technically feasible, I believe the following subforum additions will ease activity in Newbies:

  • Inquiries
  • Technical Support (Newbies)
  • Introductions

(This board is growing rapidly. I remember when I was a newbie, my thread asking for help got pushed off the page. Nobody checks the section frequently enough to keep up with its demand.)

3. Speculation
58085 posts as of this posting.

Speculation is such a new board that even I recall its creation. Now, rather than being split off, it needs to be split. Speculation is huge because of volatility in Bitcoin's price and because of the importance of Bitcoin's price. Speculation is too big. It needs to shrink, but it is unclear how.

(This board is growing rapidly and measures should be decided soon).

4. Marketplace
53490 posts as of this posting.

Because of how this board works, the number of posts is not yet a problem.

5. Mining
51428 posts as of this posting.

With so many subfora already, it's difficult to add more. Plus, this board is undergoing slow growth if any. No other board over 50000 is as stagnated as this one. Speculation is much faster-growing, and doesn't have a single subforum yet.

That deals with the boards I have suggestions for.

2136  Economy / Economics / Re: Can someone explain to me the various flavors of Libertarianism? on: July 24, 2012, 05:47:59 PM
Anarcho-capitalism isn't the only type of extreme libertarianism (which does not imply anything about economy). Ancap is based on two "social" rules:

  • Enroaching upon another's property without consent is frowned upon.
  • Breaching a contract without consent is frowned upon.

The other extreme is much less popular, at least here, but basically uses the opposite "social" rules:

  • Preventing someone from using yours or another's property is frowned upon.
  • Retribution against cancellation of contract is frowned upon.

(essentially, stateless communism).

There is no reason both cannot exist simultaneously. However, human nature may prevent prolonged stability in this situation if the two societies interact.

Whether you like it or not, wipe all and reinstall is what you need to do.

+1

And some very specialised rootkit can even infect the BIOS so in a company environment you need to flash the BIOS before reinstall. You can't trust a computer that have ever been infected.

If I'm going to be switching OS's, should I still worry about this?

def +1 to what Vlad and 01BTC10 are saying. You seem to have some fairly uncommon nastie son your machine. It probably would not hurt at all to boot from a floppy or livecd made from another mahcine and flash the bios.  Also, when you do format the drive to reinstall make sure to format /MBR  and format /S as well from a known clean disk.

nasty stuff there, m8

If that was in my shop, I'd probably just destroy the HDD, replace the mobo and rest comfortably versus wondering IF there is some more advanced infection invloved.
I'd rather not risk killing the BIOS to remove something that a) probably isn't there and b) probably doesn't matter.

Why should I format the MBR? Won't that destroy the partition table?

Sirefef is the trojan's name. I think it's currently under control (quarentined by MSE, which is saved by the system restore).

At this point, I am simply going to install Ubuntu tommorow. After dealing with ZeroAccess, this newly discovered and even worse infection will simply be an exercise to remove.

Windows, your days are numbered!

That said, the most recent Ubuntu is not my favorite. Unity... ick. But its a great Linux beginner OS.
I wish there was audio in safe mode now.

Ubuntu is good enough for me, because I've actually used it before.

Edit: Wow, these viruses are good. They just deleted the Windows Security Centre service... in Safe Mode. The reason this is so significant is that that is not a service that can even start in Safe Mode.
2140  Other / Off-topic / Re: Windows infection: please help a security newbie on: July 24, 2012, 03:12:43 AM
I have rediscovered an even more serious infection. This time, some core Windows system files were damaged.

"Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute".

Yes, even in safe mode.

I have resorted to system restore, which has fixed the critical problem (additionally, all services have been restored). MSE is currently running, but only so I can gain some experience on how to deal with a severe infection.
