1421  Other / Meta / Re: Atlas and a public plea on: September 12, 2012, 01:32:22 AM
This is Atlas. Negotiations are underway to bring me back on the forums under the following conditions:

- I use one account.

- No trolling or vandalism is done.

- I respect the rules of the forums.

- My thread creation is kept at a minimum.

The acceptance of this agreement is pending.

I wish to thank Blitzboom (Blitz) for his support in this endeavor.
(emphasis mine)

In 87 posts and little over a day, Atlas has started 14 topics (including one poll). I believe this does not meet the condition given. This is a public plea to continue enforcing sanctions upon him until his thread creation is truly reduced.

It's 9/11 nutjob day and he's just trying to reach his quota.
I realize it is September 11, but the creation of 14 (!) threads in little over a day is utterly ridiculous. Many Hero Members have not created that many threads.

1424  Other / Meta / What's in a scammer tag? on: September 11, 2012, 10:32:04 PM
Not all scenarios below correspond to an actual situation that has occurred in the past on these forums, but I can guarantee that some are. In the interest of neutrality, the connections are not posted here.

I don't claim this poll to be important anyhow, but it'll be interesting to see the results.

Scenario 1
Quote
I will give each user 0.1 BTC, up to a maximum of 100 BTC.
After paying out 50 BTC:
Quote
Sorry, I ran out of BTC. I know I said 100 BTC maximum, but please respect my situation here.

Scenario 2
Quote
Send me 0.1 BTC, and I will double it in a week! I will double 100 users!
After doubling 50 users, refuses to double 51st user, paying it back in a week:
Quote
Sorry bro, ran out, and I need to minimize my losses. I paid you back your 0.1 BTC, sorry it took so long. I don't know what I was thinking when I made the OP.

Scenario 3
Quote
I'm going to bet up to 100 BTC that the Penguins will win the Stanley Cup this year. Just send to [address] and I will return to one of the inputs if I lose. 1:1 odds, normal rules apply. I'm well trusted here, so don't worry about escrow.
After the Rangers win the cup:
Quote
I'm so sorry! I intended the bet to be a joke. I never expected anyone to send. I returned all the money sent, plus 1% extra as compensation for the time.

Scenario 4
Quote
I'm going to bet up to 100 BTC that the Blue Jays will lose tomorrow’s game. Anyone interested, post your address and amount here!
After the Blue Jays win:
Quote
Look, I'm not going to lose this bet on poor umpires. It was clear that the umpires were biased, deliberately calling a few shady Jays runs "safe". I'm not going to ask you to remit the funds, but I won't pay out either.
1425  Economy / Lending / Re: A list of defaulted loans (list of scammers inside here) on: September 11, 2012, 09:08:58 PM
Pirate.

 Cheesy
I'm adding him as per theymos' guidelines - after the bet with Vandroiy and Matthew has been settled. That should be in this couple of weeks so it's not too distant anyhow.

Add pirate, he already got the scammer tag.
Per Maged, he seems to have made off with 200000 BTC. Much less than the paper loss of 500000 BTC, but still very significant. I believe this surpassed, even if only slightly, MyBitcoin in terms of USD value stolen.

And there's this other guy, who I won't link to, that registered on the same day as Matty Boy and who has yet to add to the chorus of his decline.

It's that second guy that I have a hell of lot of info on and I have yet to publish anything relevant. Please don't PM me or try to bribe me as to whom that second guy is, but when it's finally revealed, you'll be shocked to all get-out.
You have published a lot of info on that second guy, in fact. I believe he was the founder of a Bitcoin charitable organization. Sounds like Matthew for sure!
1427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of Major Bitcoin Heists, Thefts, Hacks, Scams, and Losses on: September 11, 2012, 12:01:39 PM
Please at the 80,000BTC Matthew N Wright scam.

Thanks.
Similar to the method in which I am treating Pirate, thefts of vapour-Bitcoins cannot be included.
1428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of Major Bitcoin Heists, Thefts, Hacks, Scams, and Losses on: September 10, 2012, 09:09:54 PM
May want to add a total to all thefts in your OP.

This may be an interesting indicator as to what amount of bitcoins are in the hands of the rest of the community.
Theft bitcoins are, for the most part, in the hands of the rest of the community. The coins from the largest thefts have been redistributed. Look in your wallet, and you will find MyBitcoin coins, allinvain coins, Linode coins, and probably BS&T coins as well by now. While it's true that Mt. Gox has frozen some funds, the amount is insignificant.

This is not to claim that tainting is not an issue, but it is true that it is no longer feasible to assign special status to robbers.
1429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of Major Bitcoin Heists, Thefts, Hacks, Scams, and Losses on: September 10, 2012, 09:04:05 PM
wait, so what % of the total bitcoin has actually been stolen? :-)
This is nearly impossible to know because most BTC has been stolen not once, but many, many times.

Understood, but some (wide) estimate would still be useful. We can probably assume that a good deal of stolen coins were cleaned and then hoarded or converted to fiat, and thus not subject to resteal.

I think it's important to have some sense of the total # of coins likely still in the hands of scammers and thieves. The idea of bitcoin becoming increasingly value when such people own a significant percentage of all coin is quite distasteful. I think I could live with 5% of all bitcoins in such individuals' hands. Over 10% and I start to consider that a huge negative in the economy.

(edit: just shipped you a tiny donation....appreciate the comprehensive list)
Around 300000 BTC have been stolen in total (the list lists much less than that, but many thefts are undocumented/unknown). If Pirate is included, this number increases to 500000 BTC, which is your 5%.

Thanks for the donation!

1431  Other / Politics & Society / Re: In an AnCap society, would it be possible to eat your children? on: September 10, 2012, 08:07:34 PM
but it does raise the question how you handle childrens rights when the parents can change the set of laws whenever they please.
How did cavemen deal with children's rights? Obviously, the children grew up to be intelligent folks that invented sliced bread. Believe it or not, humans have a built-in procedure for handling children. Any additional regulation is counterproductive.

What a weak rebuttal. Just because we're here does not mean that there weren't children abused in the past.
Some things, including caring for our children, are built-in. There does not need to be a law saying "thou must eat", and equivalently there does not need to be a law saying "thou must take care of your children well".
1432  Other / Meta / Re: New administrator: Stefan Thomas on: September 10, 2012, 08:02:28 PM
In another thread you said that database dumps can be downloaded by other admins, but only you, Gavin, Satoshi and Sirius can decrypt them.
What does "direct database access" refer to? Any admin can query the db directly and e.g. dump it and/or read PMs?

It's not about ST being an admin now; it's just a general question which popped up in my mind when I read this announcement.

Global moderators can download the encrypted database backups. Admins and past admins (Gavin, Satoshi, Sirius, me, and now justmoon) can decrypt them -- they therefore have complete access to the database and can read PMs, etc. Justmoon and I can also query the live database.
Does this mean that the Cosby hackers, who had access to Satoshi's account, could have read our PMs?

How many admins do we have on bitcointalk now?

Two. Gavin recently decided to stop being an admin.
Have Satoshi's powers been revoked after the Cosby incident? What about Sirius?

1434  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do I have to write five POSTS to get out of here? on: September 09, 2012, 06:43:22 PM
replies are posts.  this was a post.

you could do five posts in about five seconds.
That would require at least 100 seconds, if I'm not mistaken.
1435  Other / Politics & Society / Re: In an AnCap society, would it be possible to eat your children? on: September 09, 2012, 06:24:17 PM
Myrkul: it's wrong to eat your children, because you take away their chance of a long fulfilling happy life.
This is a moot point because nobody will eat their children in the first place; it's clearly evolutionarily unfavourable. If they do, then they are not human, or subhuman, and don't deserve to have children.
1436  Other / Politics & Society / Re: In an AnCap society, would it be possible to eat your children? on: September 09, 2012, 02:45:08 PM
The children should have thought of that risk before deciding not to get insurance  Grin

Serious question: abortion. How would you deal with it?

Assuming that that a justice company comes to the "wrong" conclusion, and starts protecting innocent fetuses from violence / starts protecting the choice and own-body-ownership of innocent women, how would you deal with that?
Eating your children ensures that your genes will never be passed on, and nobody else will eat their children.

If a justice company is wrong, then sever all ties with it and get a new one.

1438  Economy / Goods / Re: Announcing my first product, Clothes Detergent on: September 08, 2012, 11:33:30 PM
Phosphates are expensive, not only in production but also in cleanup. They need to be removed from the wastewater, or they will disrupt the phosphor cycle and cause eutrophication. Admittedly, the phosphates contained in laundry detergent are unlikely to cause a major issue, being dwarfed by phosphate mining and water purification.

I believe the environmental concern is the reason recent editions of Tide have elected against phosphate use, and phosphate laundry powders need to be hunted down in retail stores (once, they were ubiquitous).
1439  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: September 08, 2012, 11:22:39 PM
The memory consumption of the I0C wallet has reached 1.2GB on my system. The memory needs for these wallets needs to be fixed. Anyone working on it? Don't expect the BTC community to fix it anytime soon, their wallet is less than 400GB at the moment.
I'm not aware of anyone working on it for any of the alt chains.
AFAIK the I0C wallet remains smaller than 400 GB, and does not need to be fixed yet. Due to the lower volume of transactions, I expect the size to remain manageable for many years yet.
