1281  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Sabotaging Mining Pools on: November 14, 2012, 09:15:49 PM
It hurts all miners indirectly, including the one doing the sabotage.  Imagine you are doing this and manage to bankrupt a pool because its fees don't cover its expenses. Imagine it's a big pool like slush - confidence in bitcoin will drop and make even make other pools decide to quit the business. Price of bitcoin goes down... saboteur loses too.
But saboteur earns more than he loses. This is often the case with sabotage. Think of an exaggerated scenario, where the saboteur simply takes 50% of the pool's revenue for herself. Although she loses a bit of her own revenue, she gains enough to make up for it.
1282  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Sabotaging Mining Pools on: November 14, 2012, 03:00:42 AM
But if the difficulty goes down, mining becomes more profitable.
Not if the pools begin increasing fees to compensate, which they inevitably will.
1283  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Weekend Dip Myth on: November 14, 2012, 02:55:39 AM
This is a great time to buy.. I wonder where it will bottom out?...

Well, looks like 9.74 was that point, but there were plenty of chances under $10.

3.) ICBIT.se  - similar to MPOE, ICBIT futures contracts on the BTC?USD are purchased with bitcoins, so that too isn't something that needs to
"wait for Tuesday" to trade either.   While ICBIT's volume isn't quite yet enough to impact the exchange rate much, it does offer 10:1 leverage -- giving anyone caught with not enough USDs on a weekend to lock in so that if the exchange rate rises the upside can be captured.

For these three reasons, the Weekend Dip's days may be numbered.
I inquire, why hasn't ICBIT.se achieved the success of Bitcoinica, given its superior feature set? At its apex, Bitcoinica's power was so far-reaching it became the scapegoat for virtually any price fluctuation.

These forums, especially, have become quiet. No threads asserting "LONG SQUEEZE", "STARFISH ON SELL", and the like seem to be popping up anymore.
1284  Other / Meta / Suggestion: More watchlists on: November 13, 2012, 09:58:08 PM
Sometimes, one watchlist doesn't cut it. I might want to watch the Press board for one watchlist, have all the threads I posted in in another, and have a third watchlist for assorted random threads. Would it be possible to allow use of more watchlists, ideally an arbitrary number of them?

Going further, maybe shared watchlists can also be useful (for companies making sure customer service finds all complaints, and doesn't waste time rereading complaints). And I would also love filters for the watchlists: have it, for example, only accept threads started by pirateat40.

Practical idea, or just wishful thinking?
1285  Other / Meta / Open applications for moderatorship: a big leap forward on: November 08, 2012, 02:23:41 AM
Disclaimer: I am not interested in becoming a moderator, as I simply do not have the time.

I noticed smoothie's and SaltySpitoon's public moderator application threads recently. I must say, this is a great step forward for transparency from the BitcoinTalk admins. I propose that we have a moderator application process, where any established members can publicly apply for the status. Although the admins will still have the final decision, the increased transparency will allow their power to be kept in check.

Thoughts?
1286  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2 U.S. States Legalize Adult Consumption of Cannabis on: November 08, 2012, 02:19:48 AM
It helps reduce the growth of certain cancerous cells... (Does not make it a total cure for cancer)

so by using marijuana you might have a 4% less chance of getting cancer than someone who only smokes cigarettes....  (that number is a guess but it's probably close to the truth)
Someone who smokes cigarettes is extremely likely to get cancer anyways.

Cannabis reduces the growth of certain cancerous cells. That's why medical cannabis makes sense. But if you don't have those cancerous cells in the first place, risking possible growth of other cancerous cells sounds like a bad idea to me.

I will defend to the end one's right to smoke cannabis recreationally, but I won't recommend it to anyone. It's harmful if you use it for no reason.
1287  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2 U.S. States Legalize Adult Consumption of Cannabis on: November 08, 2012, 02:12:41 AM
I was not justifying it's healthiness based on the fact it's natural.  I was justifying it's capabilities to cure everything.  I never said therefor.  If there would be a cure all, it would be natural, and if there is one, it would be cannabis.
Don't get me wrong, Cannabis is a great plant. It's a "superfood," does seem to have some anti-cancer properties, makes great paper and cloth, and you can even run your cars on it. But don't fall into the trap of thinking that because it can do all those things, it can do everything.

I mean, Amanita phalloides is a "cure-all" too... have one, and you'll never be sick again. Doesn't mean I'll be handing them out next Halloween.
Cannabis is as good a medical plant as any other (curing Alzheimer, cancer, etc.), but using it without a medical reason is clearly bad for your health. In fact, smoking cannabis when you don't have cancer can increase your chance of cancer.

Dude.. I have probably smoked more weed in 2 weeks then you have in your entire life.... Some of the stuff you say seems sorta Crazy..... Weed is great yes.. But smoke in itself is very bad for your body...

Unless you only consume your weed by eating it or vaping it, then you are doing much harm to your body.....

If it's a cure all why the fuck do I keep stubbing my damn toe? Weird ass deformity with the second toe longer than the big toe.... HIGH!

I started smoking over 2 years ago, you probably smoke a lot more than me, now.  I can't find a study that proves a harmful effect from cannabis smoke (other than suffocating monkeys with gas masks for 15 minutes, producing killage of braincells).

If someone could correct me, and provide a study that proves some negative effects.  From my experience, I can't attest to any.
Ignoring the opposition is not an effective way to make it disappear.
Nearly everything's carcinogenic.  Cannabis use does not increase your risk of cancer, it cures cancer.

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/cannabis/healthprofessional/page4
Things that cure cancer can still cause cancer. Cannabis is one of these things.

More importantly, weed has the capacity to cure any/every aliment/sickness.

It has been shown to help a great many things. Curing everything, however, I would place beyond even this miracle plant.

It is an excellent source of complete protein and amino and fatty acids, though. Makes good paper, too.
It cures cancer man, from my research, every legit study I find has the same end result: weed helps.  The thing is, weed cures your soul, a healthy soul has a healthy body.  It makes perfect sense, it's grown from nature, a little piece of god.  You can't really think our man made pharmaceuticals can match with the work of god, the universe.

This is grown from nature, too... a "little piece of god." I wouldn't recommend eating it.
That's like comparing alcohol to cannabis.  You have to look at it for what it truly is and has been for over 5000 years.
No, It's like comparing cannabis to a toxic fungi... because that's exactly what I did. Toxic plants exist as well as beneficial ones. you cannot say "Look, it grows upon the ground, as a gift from god! It must be therefore good to eat!" Nature will kill you just as quick as heal you.

Alcohol, THC, and α-amanitin all have one thing in common: they are chemicals designed by the plants and fungi that produce them to keep pests away. That one of those is non-toxic, even beneficial, to humans is happy accident.
I was not justifying it's healthiness based on the fact it's natural.  I was justifying it's capabilities to cure everything.  I never said therefor.  If there would be a cure all, it would be natural, and if there is one, it would be cannabis.
There is no cure for all. Cannabis and its active ingredient, THC, have negative impacts on the human body, especially when not used in moderation. Admittedly, anything that isn't food has negative impacts, and tobacco or alcohol are definitely worse and more prevalent.

The only ability cannabis has to "cure any/every aliment [sic] /sickness" is the ability to divert your attention from it, i.e. it is a painkiller and nothing more.
1290  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thanks USA! on: November 07, 2012, 01:03:27 PM
The rest of the world can't thank you enough for keeping Obama as president. Your politics affects others countries, and I really feel like we dodge a bullet here. Not that Obama is awesome, but mainly because Romney was beyond awful and I had a hard time believing you were not able to find a better challenger.

Also, legal marijuana in Washington and Colorado, and gay marriage in Maine and Maryland? Woah! Welcome to the 21th century, I'm really impressed.  Grin
Romney would have been disastrous for the whole world, let alone internally. I was personally quite scared when Romney took an early lead, but then relieved when Obama stormed back.
1291  Other / Off-topic / Re: Congrats Obama on: November 07, 2012, 12:54:03 PM
Unless something extremely weird happens, Obama has won his second term. I personally prefer him to Romney, but find both options detestable. Either way, we can all sleep well now knowing that there won't be another election this big in four years the bitcoin price will continue to rise the USD price will continue to fall.

Fixed  Grin
FTFY.
1292  Other / Off-topic / Re: Congrats Obama on: November 07, 2012, 05:13:03 AM
Thumbs up for gay marriage and marijuana Roll Eyes ...not that I do either of those.

I love the Google page for voting results, made easy and clear to see. I was quite surprised Obama got so many points from states.
Indeed, I don't support Obama's aggressive foreign policy, but his social and environmental policies are far superior to Willard's. He is the superior choice among the two large parties, mostly because the alternative choice is terrible.
1293  Other / Off-topic / Re: Congrats Obama on: November 07, 2012, 05:04:08 AM
Aparently their still counting the votes from Ohio, but it won't matter. We all know who the next president will be.
Obama also has an almost-certain victory in Florida, and likely victories in Virginia and Colorado. There's like, a 0.1% chance at this point Romney can catch up.
1294  Other / Off-topic / Re: Congrats Obama on: November 07, 2012, 04:52:16 AM
I’m surprised he won considering he lost the black vote.
He got >90% of black American votes. Other major factors were the Atheist vote (>60% of people who do not attend religious services), the educated vote (>55% of those with postgraduate degrees), and the lower-class vote (>60% of people who earn less than $50000 per annum).
1295  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama or Romney ? on: November 07, 2012, 04:35:54 AM
Ron Paul!

Very comprehensive post, but I wonder does Satoshi post here often???
Satoshi's forum account is for archival purposes only. Following a catastrophic breach not so long ago, It has been disabled and can no longer be accessed.

I think the entire forum should be banned then we can all move to a different forum.   Smiley

Wouldn’t that just pollute the new place if you let the same misfits go there?

It might help to have a forum with more competent moderators.

Rarity#7 ?

Yup: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=117590.msg1303049#msg1303049

Rarity is the new Atlas! This place is so interesting. Let’s face it without the “Days of Our Lives” drama this would just be a boring assed forum about economics and cryptography where everyone would say things like, “Oh, what a wonderful thing that is you’ve done there professor. Let’s pat each other on the back some more.” The Rarity, Atlas, Matthew N. Wright, Pinkie Pie, Solidcoin, Goat, Smoothie, Dank, bulanula, reeses and even you make this forum something interesting. Without them it would be like this forum here: http://amazingforums.com/forum/IRVIN/forum.html

In the next episode: Will Rarity get banned? Will he reinvent himself and come back? Will Professor Plum find the secret of TBF. Will the Mod hazek go apeshit on them. Learn these answers and more on the next episode of……

Great. Now we have two Atlases. Though, Rarity is a bit better than Atlas because her posts seem at least a bit more on topic. But that's like comparing epsilon with zero; they are both completely useless.
1299  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Buteforced attacked Instawallet on: October 24, 2012, 09:44:01 PM
Ug. I would advise against using any wallet service to store your Bitcoins. Spend just a few minutes reading the threads on this forum and you will see the bad things that have happened so far. Use either bitcoind or Bitcoin QT (Graphical version of Bitcoin) to store and spend your Bitcoins.

There are many instances where a hosted (shared) EWallet like Paytunia, Instawallet, EasyWallet, or an exchange's EWallet even work very well due to EWallets being convenient and nearly always accessible.

Instawallet and EasyWallet are special case EWallets, where there is no username / password, just a URL.  They are referred to as "low security wallets" and are suitable for low amounts.

They don't make great places for storing wealth, but for someone who simply needs an address to receive $5 worth of coins, it works just fine.

I would not trust them even to hold $1 worth of Bitcoin.

So you would have no problem handing your real wallet to someone on the bus or subway and asking them to hold it for you?

There is no insurance backing those services up. They can take your money and other peoples money and run with it as some have done in the past.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me...
If there are less than $20 in the wallet, then I see no problem with having someone hold it for me, especially if they have held other's wallets without incident in the past.
1300  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ultraprune merged in mainline on: October 21, 2012, 04:00:19 PM
Clearly not everyone in the network can do this, as that would mean new nodes cannot bootstrap anymore.

What will prevent it? If the changes r good then everyone will use new approach.
We could financially reward nodes that participate with the transaction fees. I think this is a good approach, as long as a secure way of doing it is found.
