I touched those VRM modules, they are very hot, so some kind of cooling should be provided, but the case fan is too weak, not even match the avalon's 120MM fan, but so far I have not find a 140mm fan providing enough airflow, they are all weak and quiet case fans

I agree. I have a few spare avalon fans that I will be swapping with the two front fans.

How can you mount 120mm fan on 140mm holes?

I will have to use tie wraps just to test how the increased cfm helps cool the unit.
2182  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: KNC ASIC Users Thread on: October 07, 2013, 11:34:37 AM
Thought it might be handy to have a seperate thread where owners can share information, tips, modifications, improvements, addons etc away from the clutter of the 'where's my order' posts in the main thread.

That sounds like a good idea. I have posted my experience and will keep it updated over the next few days.

I'm wondering. Assuming you add/change fans ..then your rig fries or otherwise breaks. Won't you have invalidated the warranty ?

At this time with the default fans and the case lid on. Almost no air moves out the back.

I could not even put out a candle with the lack of air movement.

I would not run these units with that level of ventilation. I use the Avalon type fans to move the air on my Bitfury Kit setup as well.

Also consider that my ambient temp is under 63 degrees fahrenheit.

The only cooling that is happening at this time from what I can see is the processor itself. Everything else is just sitting in hot air.

If I had to contend with any ambient temp over 75 degrees fahrenheit, then I would expect these units to fail.

P.S. I have upgraded the firmware from v0.92 to v0.93

This is the improved results with just the case cover removed and an external fan blowing air over all the components.

Before airflow management change and firmware upgrade from stock v0.90

After airflow management Change and upgrade to firmware v0.92

How big are the case fans, 120mm, 140mm ?
How are they powered, 3/4 pins motherboard connector ? 4 pins power supply connector ?

I am going to swap the 140mm fans with 120mm high cfm fans.

And so far you can read my review if you wish to follow the updates. Smiley

no the heat sink fans are good.

The problem is the other components on the board itself that need that heat ventilated.

The air moving in and out of the case is not cutting it. So I will swap out those 2 fans with 2 avalon type fans and put them at full speed.

Do what you will, but there are plenty of people running 2,3 or 10+ units with the stock fans. I think swapping fans at this point is just making changes for the sake of changes, similar to putting it in a colder room or warmer room or increasing the power supply. It's not going to make a difference.

Actually my hashing has gone up from 500 to 535 just opening up the case and putting on the fan.
2187  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: October 07, 2013, 10:36:06 AM
However I am going to swap out the stock fans on the case and instead put in higher CFM fans.

what fans you gonna use instead ie will they fit them heatsinks?
Why would you touch the heat sink fans? They are more then adequate.

Nice to see you right up there with the first to get hardware Sitarow.

<agenda>Could you please ask KFCMiner[sic] to provide their modifications to the GPL3 code that is cgminer? Thanks.</agenda>

Just trying to get any time with Sam seems to be an impossible task.

ANY SATURNS IN THE WILD YET???

Today. staring out the window looking for UPS van.
Who said v0.92 was the BBQ version?? . me scared

Have a check on the KnC forum for what other people have shared about that and other issues. Easy enough to read what's on there as it's quiet and avoid or fix and problems Smiley

I have posted details on my system

Presently running firmware v0.92
With added cooling and without.

Seems the issue is that the case fans are not adequate to ventilate the excess heat that is generated.

fires? I've only heard of the one burnt component ie flash/smoke is all....anyway just heard of the 1 board issue I  think?

with a metal case and the cover on away from clutter I'd suspect most of us will be fine imho..now a case less/open unit not so sure?

Searing

Wouldn't an open case be better for heat if not also airflow? I think I should open my case and put a big fan running on it

Something like this maybe?

I did notice better performance boost.

However I am going to swap out the stock fans on the case and instead put in higher CFM fans.

My recommendation is to upgrade your  unit to v0.92 the moment you get it.

Drops the watts at the wall from 860 to 580.

That itself will help save them from the magic smoke.

Anyone more than me that took the hassle of signing up at tradehill?
avalon, what a joke, b3 4 90GH units for 16btc, and avalon mini 2 board (oc'd to 375mhz) 60GH unit 9btc.
Luckily , they have hundreds of units. so far i can only see one mini that has the 9btc bid.
If they put up some reasonable prices ok..

I think that the DIY Red Avalon project auction went as high as 19 BTC for 1 unit.

But then again that was before KNC even had a chip Smiley

Now that KnCMiner has proven chips, the pricing game has changed and future difficulty rise will make aggressive pricing a strong selling point.

Okay okay.

Due to popular demand.

Spoiler. (Geek Pron Below)

Unit 1 Good to go out of box.

Unit 2 Small delay out of box.

Originally I had posted this info on KnCMiner form while bitcointalk was down. Feel free to post your own details as respects your experience with your hardware.

I wish to start of by congratulating the KnCMiner team on the success of their project.

In the case of the spec of the unit they have indeed underpromise and overdeliver.

Below are my first impressions of the Jupiter unit that I had ordered. I will continue to post my observations and results as to performance comparable with other ASIC hardware available today on the market.

Build Quality

Pro:

The unit itself is extremely light compared to what I have grown accustom to.

The case itself including the contents is well packaged together. The heatsinks on the individual boards are secure and snug to the lid with the help of foam pads.

There's two metal plates on the lid that helps move wind threw the unit out the back.

System runs very quiet with the low rpm fans.

Cons:

The stock fans are in my opinion do not provide adequate CFM.

The air intake is in the same location where the cables connect.

Performance and Power Consumption

The stock firmware that had shipped with my unit v0.90 pushed the chips into the high 600 GH/s Range and pulled 860 watts @120v. However due to hardware errors they average performance was 490 GH/s.

Upgrading to v2 0.92 the power consumption dropped from 860 watts, to 570 watts at 120V power. However due to poor ventilation cg miner reports 530 Gh/s average however due to the hardware errors the performance is the same as before at about 490-500 GH/s.

Software

Pro: If you had provided the correct information on your account before shipping then the unit will come preconfigured and ready to go.
Just plug in to your internet and power and your up at 100%.

Cons: I recommend that all persons open up the unit in order to check for loose fans. Seems a little bump can make the fans detach from the heatsinks. It is fairly simple to attach the fans.

Shipping

I was pleasantly surprised when UPS had shipped my unit on time.

Shipped October 2nd and Arrived October 4th.

Another colleague had issues with his order getting misplaced by UPS. However in the end UPS did deliver the unit on time.

Overall impressions

The case design a 8/10
This is due to the connection points and the inadequate stock ventilation for the speed setting of the ASIC processors.

The web interface a 5/10.
The web interface needs to include access to the cgminer log and perhaps poll the details from cgminer onto a page that the average user can use.

The software pre configuration 10/10.
As long as you had provided the needed information to connect to your pool of choice then the system should come ready to mine.

Here is a screenshot of the Jupiter 1 performance. This also includes other units operating in the same environment at the same electrical service.

Ambient room temp is 62.6°Ft or 17°C

Note:

I would just like to add that KnCMiner team has provided an excellent product overall that will help those entering the mining segment with a solid option.

Later on I will be posting screenshots of performance improvements that I will be conducting over the course of the next few days.

if a troll is in the forest, under a bridge, and no one pays him a toll - has the troll done its job by preventing others passage?
lets change around some semantics:
If a global moderator feels compelled to nitpick a company for using an address on their 1st prototyped completed unit and yet turns around and accepted bfl money for years...does that make him a global Troll???  JOHN K?HuhHuh?
It's a bit trolly to pick on KNC with only .5 TH online— which is why I made the "I guess I feel left out of the trolling" comment. But I really don't understand why people tolerate manufacturers competing with them. Battered wife syndrome perhaps.
Its nothing as I see avalon testing some terahashes in eligius in months and keep customers to wait and waste of ROI.
It's funny, before avalon had products in existence they made a nice strongly worded comment about how competent testing doesn't involve mining on the network (a position I agree with). As far as I know they didn't mine at scale on the mainnet to test batch 1 units... but the later stuff?  Yea. That also falls into my bin of "why the heck are people tolerating this??".

Seriously???

I've been telling ppl they're full of it for 600+ pages.

What will it take for everyone to get in on the program?

They haven't made a heck of a lot - http://blockexplorer.com/address/17Czc8RVL3FU5T2MLx2zLbRnpfBNgH9vFo Anyway, they've been working all weekend so maybe they need some beer money - or Champagne money - and they deserve it!  Finally a company that is a class act and still we aren't happy...
 Kudos to KnC!!!

Take care

...I expect that these projects should reward early adopters when delays occur. ..

Just knowing that you'll be helping secure the network is all the reward you should need.  And are likely to get Smiley

With the coming competition between manufacturers for next day hardware shipping. That is expected to be the norm by october/november 2013. The need to give further incentive will become apparent if you wish to have your project funded with pre-order sales.

Another angle to consider is that newbie miners entering the fray will be discouraged from moving existing investments into this high risk segment unless they have adequate incentive over traditional investment options.

Hence why I post reminders to those new to Bitcoin about the importance to diversify a portfolio and attempt to avoid putting to much into one investment vehicle.

The important point is: They have 20-30 employees (at this stage maybe more). To post a twitter message: "Everything is OK.Chips here. Shipping starts tuesday." You need exactly 29.5 seconds. I dont get it why they choose to stay silent. Especially since they did announcements like this last week.

this is last mail from Friday, which I received from them:

From: Customer Service [mailto:customerservice@kncminer.com]

Subject: RE: order XXX-XXXX-000XXX - shipping date

Hello,

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconveniences caused.

We can confirm that your order is still expected to ship towards the end of September and all our team is working hard to start the delivery as soon as possible.

I can't do anything except waiting now. If they will not fulfill their promise, hope that some kind of compensation will follow.

I think along those same lines.

With the future of bitcoin hardware going next day shipping. I expect that these projects should reward early adopters when delays occur.

I have a day 1 order in the #200's.
