If you want quiet look at Avalon 4.1 for example it comes quiet, no mods needed.  I wish you would have asked on the S5 before buying, and also before selling.

The S5 run's hot and loud.  That is just how it was made.  There are some who modded it.  I think most likely is you modding with much quieter fan's can do push/pull even.  But you sold it... so would be a shame to buy another S5.

There are rumors of a new S7 that no one knows much about... so if you wait it is possible it's smaller but no one knows for sure.  But chances are it will still be loud, even changing fan's out voids warranty though.

Great information! Can you tell me a little more about the Avalon 4.1? How much is it?

Looks pretty cool! https://ehash.com/product/avalon4-module-1t/

Its very hard to get, i had a buying thread opened for months saying i'm interested in buying one and i never had anyone PM me about it, ever. Its more expensive than the S5, its a rare unit, not many were built and the price did not really drop.

In term of value i'd put it around 1BTC shipped in term of ROI, a bit more expensive than a S5 but its actual sale value is definitively higher, probably close to 400USD or 1.5BTC~

Yuck! I would like to get back into the game any ideas? Maybe $200ish to spend?
Yeah 2 Antminer S3+ , they are 453gh/s each so 2 would give you around 900gh/s and cost you probably 200$ while being quite while stock.

But he has now also said he pays 0.08~0.10$/kWh. So even at 2% increment and the BTC being this high, he would not be able to ROI a S3 doing 455gh for 355watts for 100$ total.

Hi All,

Quick background - I have a S4 on it's way, only have a windows 7 lappy for personal use which i was planning to control the S4 from if possible?

I've been reading everything I can on pools, firmware and mining software to be ready but I'm overwhelmed or just confused about what I actually need to use!

I'm not a programmer just have stage 1 computer science at uni under my belt so was hoping to have a GUI and would love to monitor my miner by mobile phone.

I'm looking at Minera atm - Is this something I can use? It's not actually the miner itself is it? It's just a web based GUI for CGminer?

I would like to get myself familiar with the programs I will be using but still don't actually know what programs I need...

I saw that there was a S4 folder in the CGminer filehosting site? Do I need this?

As you can tell I'm in over my head here for sure any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
B

Thats an awfully confusing post. You'd be wasting your time and money by getting a RasPI or anything. Antminers all have a built-in controller. Your laptop is more than fine, the miner already has a built-in gui that you connect to by simply putting the unit's IP into your web browser.

TLDR: No and No. You need 0 additional hardware. 0 additional software. All you need is a Ethernet cable to plug it into the router.

Thanks mate! I was seriously confused yesterday!

I've got my s4 now and trying to sort it all out now! I'm already hitting walls lol

Well feel free to ask for support here, you're in the right forum subsections for getting mining support. Tongue

I have a S4 myself so it should be pretty easy to guide you if you're stuck somewhere.
2463  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What mining asic is profitable in my country? on: October 27, 2015, 08:34:27 AM
How about using your miners for a lottery mining instead? Instead of getting some dust you would have a low chance of making bank. That would be a very low but still a chance at hitting ROI and beyond.

True...  But those odds are ridiculous.  Wink

Well a few % is better than a few dollars over a year with a few times that as the electricity cost. A small chance is better than 0% chance.
2464  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: good places to hide paper wallet ? on: October 27, 2015, 08:13:47 AM
I do not have much knowledge on pen drive storage. For long term storage we must need SSD. May be cost of buying is high but for a secured next generation saving we must go for SSD (Solid State Disk).

This is completely wrong and i will not suggest anyone to hide your paper wallet in a SSD.
For long term this is not recommended because if SSD has no electricity for a long time, the data inside can be erased.
Try to hide your paper wallet somewhere where you think that nobody will touch, or will have no idea about that place.

you can run your ssd on a different network, or even without any connection, just so it remain active with electricity and all

it would still be a cold storage, last time i've checked could storage mean only off line, not switched off completely

For this case HDD are better rather than SSD,
Because they can stay longer if you don't touch them.
I would suggest the OP to hide the paperwallet inside computer loudspeakers Smiley

ssd evo can last very long with its memory, up to 5 years at least, and my old ssd was still working good for 3 years, i'm not buying this whole ssd, have poor lifespan"

it's one of those excuse that big business throw around, to incite you to buy another new one fast and keep their market alive

The SSD poor lifespan thing was a problem with first gen SSD, its not anymore. My SSD Samsung EVO has been running great for years, now. And if you don't use them much, SSD probably has a better lifespan than HDD because of no mechanical parts.

For a fast node SSD would definitively be better too.

Currently looking on a 960 or a 780ti graphics card at Newegg. and bought some items like a cheap USB miner for bitcoins which I use for my hobbies, mostly.

I gave my first try buying with btc on newegg too a few days ago.

Is Newegg the first online store accepting bitcoin?

Hmm no. Over here there were other shops like Tigerdirect.

Globally i think Overstock.com was accepting Bitcoin long before. I'm not sure which shop it was truly the first, but there are a lot of them now.

initramfs.bin.SD-20141016.tar.gz is the last firmware that supports adjusting voltage. Everything after that is sabotaged by bitmain.

None of smit1237's available firmwares have voltage control, as they are based on initramfs.bin.SD-20150129.tar.gz.

A good S4 will run 225MHz at 0710-0720, average S4 will need 0725, bad S4 will need 0730 to be stable at 225MHz. The lower the better, of course. Proceed at your own risk if using the stock S4 PSU.

With the stock PSU, i'm doing 0717 @ 2.05~TH/s, its not glorious but it does put the at the wall draw at under 1400watts, not sure how much i should push it, even though it should be able to feed 1440Watts so 1600Watts at the wall. I'm not sure i trust it.

Its not the stock PSU but its a replacement of the same, so...
2468  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Circle Debit Card Vs Bank Account Withdraw on: October 27, 2015, 06:50:51 AM
okay so apparently you could have your circle account in either usd or bitcoin.  First off, do almost all of you keep it in bitcoin as oppose to usd?  Because it automatically converted it for me when i did a 0.02 btc transfer from electrum to circle.

So let say i transfer 250 dollars worth of btc from electrum to circle.  I then withdraw it to my bank account.  I will receive 250 dollars in few days.  However if i keep my balance in btc... let say i send 250 dollars worth of btc to my circle wallet.  It will show the amt of btc worth 250 on it.  However few days later... let say the amt of the btc is worth 230 for example.  Now let say i want to withdraw it to my bank account.  Is the moment i press withdraw to my bank of america... it will show the usd amount?  Thus no matter what matters in few days with btc fluctuations, it has no effect on me since it counts the moment i click request withdraw?

However, im curious if most of you here who use circle keep it in usd or bitcoin currency.  Im guessing almost all of you change it to bitcoin?  Surprised usd is the default.

Because unless its changed and is completely different in the USA, interact is one way, unless a refund is issued. So its okay for buying, but not for selling.
There has not been a real downside for an interact purchase so far, so you can buy instantly and sell over usually 1 day.

I use Coinbase however, the fees are way better here.

What is your electricity cost/rate in per/kWh? If its over 0.08~0.1$/kWh i'd say just forget it, grab a small USB miner for fun and thats pretty much it. Maybe something a little bit bigger to run as a lottery miner.

Currently 0.08 - 0.10

Thats more than what you'd pay for hosted mining so...Its honestly hard to recommend you anything.

Odds are even something efficient than a S7 will not ROI before the halving, which at which point make any profit an uncertain thing.
And going back to a S5 is also not recommended since your electricity cost would already take a significant portion of the earning. If you get S5's for 200$~ you could try it but its very hard to get it in the low 200$'s. Though not impossible. You might be able to break even after 6 months and then profit by selling it.

Finding a hosted solution might be better however.
2470  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Running a 16 Pins S5 blade in a 18 Pins controller? on: October 26, 2015, 10:47:51 PM
A couple more things to add to this, both of which skirt around the question.  Smiley

I share  again one finding .

You can use new S5 Hash PCB  ( 18 pin connector)   with S5 Control PCB  (16 pin connectors) Need only a 16 pin cable.
Picture of my water cooling S5 project    3 x old blade + 1x new 18 pin blade.

So it looks like You can use an 18 Pin Hash with a 16 Pin Controller.

Next I took an 18 pin Hash & an 18 Pin Controller & removed the end 2 connections from the connecting cable. This Hashed without problem.

So my betting given the above is that a 16 Pin Hash with an 18 Pin controller will be fine. Just make sure you plug the 16 Pin cable in the correct end of the 18 Pin Controller socket.

Of course the outstanding question is what are the additional 2 pins for?  Smiley

Rich

I understand that the 16pin end will have 2 pins short in the 18 pin connector on the 3.3v end. Pin 1 being on the opposite end, which is also the square-ish pin. I might receive the stuff this week, i'll report back then.

Hopefully someone figure out what the extra 2 pins is for.

When you buy Bitcoins from Coinbase, they go to your Coinbase wallet. You then need to send the BTC to an actual address. When you do that you will have a TXID and even if unconfirmed you will be able to see the BTC being sent to the address you asked.

Let me see if I understand you.  I guess I can create my own address.  (I'm assuming there must be bitcoin-compatible public/private key generators that I can download...)  Then I tell coinbase to 'Send' X BTC to that address.  You're saying that that will create a transaction on the block chain that I can view.

And since I (and only I) will have the secret key, I can be sure at that point that I 'own' those X bitcoins. Is that right?

You don't generate privkey you don't deal with those directly and you should not do it or expose them in any way. Just get a wallet and let it generate public addresses for you. Personally i use Multibit HD.

If you download some "generators" you're probably just infecting your computer with a wallet stealer.

Anything from here should do;
https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

-Get a wallet.
-Generate a receiving address. For example on HD wallets, you will click receive and you will be given an address that it wants you to only use one time (but you can use it as much as you want)
-Go to your coinbase wallet/account
-Click Send/request
-Input your newly generated Public address and send

You will then immediately be given a TXID in form of a hash. You can click it or copy it and paste it into a blockchain viewer.

Which firmware support voltage control of the S4?
Now with the cool weather, I can get 225 and stay under 50c, but I start getting random X's and sometimes the miner will die(no API or Web control) and I have to power cycle it.
Do I need to lower the voltage some to overclock, or raise it in this case?

The older one, you need to rewrite the firmware to a old firmware version, then setup a new CGMiner version. I'd recommend looking into getting the firmware off smits.

Happen to know the last version that supported it?
https://bitmaintech.com/support.htm?pid=00720140930114518599JXGHWWD80660
Which custom version from Smits? Found this person: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=374051
May be going over my head for a few hundred GH, but I love to tinker so seems interesting at the same time Smiley

From memory i was told it was told October 2014.
Would be the oldest one here;
https://www.bitmaintech.com/support.htm?pid=00720140930114518599JXGHWWD80660

And no "smit1237"
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=940250.0

I'm not using the bitmain's i'm using his (smit1237's) low fan speed version, but i'm not sure if i was able to enable volt control because i did it in a certain way or i got a version of his firmware that wasn't meant to be public.

If you dig through a couples of page you'll probably find my post asking the same question. Though i did not find the solution through this topic.

2474  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will the Banking Industry kill Bitcoin and keep the Blockchain? on: October 26, 2015, 10:27:41 PM
I really don't trust bankers of the world. I know they are watching bitcoin from far away and thinking about Blockchain technology. Banks may want to take this to their advantage.
As centralized cryptocurrency.

Banks already made clear what they want and thats the super ledger technology of the Blockchain, which they already been coming up with projects around it. Its not really going to effect BTC as such.

And a centralized cryptocurrency is called FIAT.

A centralized crptocurrency will have its name and not FIAT. We cannot call fiat the us dollar. It is fiat but its name is us dollar. The same with all the other currencies of all the countries of the world. They have their names and being fiat is another characteristic of those but not their name. We cannot call the Constitution Fiat because its name id Constitution. If we mus call everything given by a centralized center fiat we will have something like that in discussing something: Give me that fiat because I need to do a fiat which with the other fiat can create a fiat needed to use as fiat and for the fiat.  Huh

...I'm not saying it would be called FIAT, i'm not saying USD's name is "FIAT" I'm saying a centralized crypto would be what FIAT already is... A centralized, government sanctioned/controlled currency.

Completely defeat the purpose, so won't happen. What will happen is Banks absorbing the Blockchain technology. Electronic FIAT already work with cryptography transmission, the difference here will be applying the technology to a secure super ledger.

PM me if you ever decide to sell the units individually, i'd grab a EVGA or two.
Thats a pretty varied batch of capacity and quality of miners so i don't think there are a lot of big fishes on this forum that would pay more than 30% of its "new" value.

Tho you might find a buyer to buy all the good PSU's (Superflower, Seasonic OEM, etc), if you put all the poor OEM aside.

Hi guys i just want to know if mining is profitable in my country.. My electricity cost is 0.53$ what do you think what asic is good to be profitable?

The rest of the guys are totally right... i have 0.27€/kwh, and i'm mining at a loss (i'm mining just for fun with very old HW).

I wouldn't recommend cloudmining tough... There are only a handfull of companies i would trust, but the amount of coins you make is so low it's hardly worth it...

What hardware are you running still?  I have to give you some dedication points for still mining at that rate.

That electricity price is rediclous.

Like i said, really old one Wink
I'm running 2 antminer U2's and one gridseed gc3355.

for sha256, i'm running at about 3Ghz, and about 350k scrypt (i know i can actually use the gridseed for dual mining, but i'm actually using an old PSU that isn't suitable for the power draw the dual mining would cause)...

It's just for fun, i'm actually just burning a bit of electricity, finding some shares and generating almost no satoshi's (i could actually make a lot more by spending 15 minutes/day on faucets)

How about using your miners for a lottery mining instead? Instead of getting some dust you would have a low chance of making bank. That would be a very low but still a chance at hitting ROI and beyond.

Thats an interesting rumor, what source does it come from?

A bite-sized quiet S7 level miner would be very nice. Something like 1.6TH on 400watts. Would definitively make me review my recommendations of getting S5's, even though the price would probably be around 500-600USD.
2480  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 Hashes for 60 seconds and then stops... on: October 26, 2015, 09:12:24 PM
I tested each of the boards individually and the beeping continued to happen. However, I changed the fan with an extra PWM I had lying around and the beeping has now stopped.

Not sure why the original fan would cause that, however everything seems to be working well now. Thanks!

The S5 has protection if it cannot read the RPM it stop the miner from mining for protection. But its something you usually notice when you monitor the temps and RPM.

But it looks at the "FAN 1" connector only. If you have a single fan if you plug it into "FAN-2" and leave "FAN-1" with nothing connected it will go into safety mode after so many seconds. Just tried it on my S5 and that's what it did on mine don't hold me to anyone elses.

Just make sure there is a fan connected to FAN-1.

I always use two fans but I make sure the fan closest to the controller board is plugged into fan 1.

Yes that is correct, but that is not what the OP was experiencing, since the miner would hash for a while. If no fan is connected it go strait into beep mode after it finish booting up and read the Fan Speed.

But its possible that the Fan has a defective circuit. Which is kinda odd that it would fail after 60-120 seconds.
