1501  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: cheap electricity so what now? on: January 07, 2016, 02:45:45 PM

It also depends on what your electric costs the rest of the day. If you only mine for those 9 free hours it'll take a lot of your time (having to start/stop the miner each day, unless you script it) plus youre only mining 38% of a day. You should figure out what it would cost to run a miner 24 hours, including the 9 free hours. It might still be profitable. Or look at buying older hardware for cheap/free and run that only during the free hours.

The problem might become that if you start a big farm of old (free) hardware the power company will realize it and start charging you for the "excessive" use.

the cost during the day is $0.13 a kilowatt.
i ran a script of my dear old S1 way back to shutdown
as for the power issue i kinda already run about 4 compters at about 650watts each at night and only night  for "projects" and they haven't said anything yet

So your average price throughout the day should be $0.08 a kilowatt which (if my math is correct) is pretty decent. In my opinion you still have two real options. 1) buy new ASICs which are very efficient and mine 24/7 or 2) buy cheap older gen ASICs and only mine at night. Maybe a third option would be to get both new and old ASICs - mine with newer ones 24/7 and only power the rest up at night. All this mostly depends on the price you can get ASICs for.

Its too expensive for S7's. Better he buy a ton of cheap S1/S2/S3 and only run them during the free period. The S7 is too expensive per GH to run only some of the time. 0.08$ per kWh is not that good.
1502  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Large review of Finksy/J4bbrwock server psus compared to ATX psu- photos up on: January 07, 2016, 03:18:08 AM
Haha, I want to LIVE.............When you have a chance, please also compare where the 2000W PSU stack up in the efficiency.  I'm assuming it would be somewhere in the middle.   Also can I trust my Wemo Insight?  It's showing that the B8 S7 is pulling 1540W at the wall.  That sounds way too high for such an efficient PSU like my EVGA G2 1300W.

The B8 S7's pull around 1330W DC (rating of 1422W at the wall with 93% efficient PSU as per bitmain's specs) which is over 100% load on your EVGA 1300. This would make effective efficiency 86-87%%, which would be about right considering how high the load is on it.

Thanks Finksy, guess no more using the EVGA going forward and just stick to my 2000W PSUs.  Can't wait to get your new 4K boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phillip - What should I expect at the walls w the 2K PSU for Batch 8 @standard Freq?

It should be 99.46% load on a 1300w G2. The math is 1293W/0.88eff(@120v input)=1470W at the wall. Just a bit over the 12A/15A 80% limit. Not excellent but not bad either. Should be getting mine tomorrow to get some real world tests.
1503  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S3 Setup - Joining Pool / Cgminer on: January 06, 2016, 11:59:33 PM
1st  :
If your using Antpool and an S3 Miner - is cgminer or any other bitcoin software needed ? I have successfully setup the miner with its own built in the background web gui, similar to logging in to a router, so do I need to download anything else, like drivers and such ? I just did a firmware upgrade..

2nd  :
When do you need Bitcoin mining software, like cgminer ? Does it depend on the miner or pool - solo or shared ?
S3 S4 and such I don't see any mentioning of it in instructions.. How does it run in the background ?

Sorry for the post being so nooby.

Thanks

1)It already is mining, why would you want to install cgminer when it already has it? No. No. Dont do firmware upgrades in the future, it can brick your controller and it typically does nothing for you.

2)You already have it. No. No. If you ssh into the miner and type screen -r you'll be able to see cgminer run if screen is installed. You can see what version of Cgminer its running on the status tab.
1504  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Selling 1TH/s AntMiner S2 1000GH/s BITCOIN on: January 06, 2016, 11:54:15 PM
you should start expect about 200€ but thats just me

Thats too much. Can get two S3 for that price and they have better efficiency.
1505  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would be a good asic miner to start with? on: January 06, 2016, 08:18:24 PM
By your standard (less than 8c/KWH) my electric is cheap - yet I've NEVER had any of the calculations I've done show that the S7 will ever pay off. Usually not even all that close to doing so.

VERY VERY cheap (3c or under) maybe, though right now even at the way-too-late drop in S7 pricing it's still looking VERY iffy.

 NOT 7.5c

No. 0.08$/kWh is not my standard for ROI'ing a S7. Its my standard that 0.08$/kWh+ is too high to mine. Though the S7 ROI in 4.5 months at current diff at 0.06$/kWh. That's not bad at all. The S7 itself will still be worth $ in 5 months too.
1506  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Should I Buy used or new miners? on: January 06, 2016, 02:27:13 PM
I would like to thank all of you for the experienced and helpful tips.

There's one question that i would require some advice on. I have recently read about BitFury's new chips, and some speculated that it would reach end users by Q2 2016. Should i be waiting, or should i purchase some miners right now?

Also, I am considering of buying alternative PSUs from Ebay. Should i be doing that? Or should i be buying PSUs from the manufacturer of the ASICs?

Some newbie questions too :

1) Should i be buying raspberry pi if i were to go for avalon 6 / antminer s7? I've seen that they have built in controller.
2) Would i require fast internet connection? As there will be alot of miners using the same connection.

We will be placing 10~20 units for a test, before we really go full scale on it.

-This is mostly speculative, its very hard to say, also the new gen chip might barely make it in time before the halving, which honestly throws all prevision out of whack. So you could ignore Bitfury for now and simply see if you can ROI easily before halving, even with 8%+ diff per step;
https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator

1) Maybe/No;
You can get a preflashed pi from Avalon or you can flash one yourself. S7 does not make use of raspi since as you said, they have built in controller (which is a BBB, very similar to a raspi)
2)No. Just stable good ping.

Has anyone tried Ultra Kaze on the S7 to compare noise and cooling performance vs stock? I'm wondering if this would be a good idea to pick up some Ultra Kaze.

Assuming there is a failure of some sort in the last stage pair, then the worst it can be is that the core has gone SC, if it was OC then nothing would be working. This will have pushed up the core voltage on the other chips slightly but only a small amount. Is the red led on that board still working?

Rich

I dont know what SC is, OC could be... overcurrent? Anyhow, it is hashing normally-ish (75gh/s loss), the red led seem dead. I never really paid attention before but right now its right blade's led does not seem to be on.

Whats the diagnostic, doctor?

Short Circuit, Open Circuit, referring to the chips being in a string from a power point of view. So if you have an OC chip none of them will work, if SC then the rest of the chain is powered at a slightly higher voltage so it might work, which yours is. The fact that the red led is not on means there is a fault in the IO (In Out  Smiley circuitry in one of the final pair of chips.

Bottom line is that probably there is a fault in one of the final pair of chips, but that it is not preventing the rest of the chain from working. May not be a SC core, could just be a fault in the IO signal side of the chip.

However although I have a fair understanding of the circuit treat the above with a pinch of salt as so far I have not been able to repair my board with the last 4 chips not working....

Rich

So does a dead ASIC cause this or could it be like a bad resistor/capacitor ?  Are there any guides on here where somebody successfully repaired their S5? I've reballed /replaced many IC before in the past, the BM1384 seems like it would be very simple to swap since its fairly large compared to most other mobile IC's i had to replace in the past.

There is not much to go wrong on each of the stages. A big decoupling capacitor , the level shifting components between the stages, and the 1.8V Low Drop Out regulator. A few measurements are needed to confirm that chip failure is the most likely problem, then just the job of robbing a replacement chip from another board.

As I said I have not yet successfully repaired mine and the next job on the list is to make an ASIC test jig so that I can check the chip I remove before using it as a replacement.

If I ever get this done I will write it up along with a trouble shooting guide. However at this point I feel that my knowledge is just in theory rather than practice.

I have found removing and replacing the chips difficult with the IR rework station I have. Because of the heatsinking effect from the copper areas on the board they need a lot of heat, and I am worried I am damaging the chips. I suspect I need a more expensive device than the one I am using

Rich

I see. Hopefully its just a fluke. The apartment's voltage seem to go up and down a bit, i suspect because of the load. I'm pretty much wondering if its an isolated incident.
1511  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would be a good asic miner to start with? on: January 06, 2016, 01:38:02 AM
S7 would be the only choice IMHO, however, even in that case I still stand behind my words that home mining is about to end soon.

Mining diff goes up 20-30% per month these days and there s hardly any space these days to make money from mining.

This is why I always choose a few PoS coins to stake where I can get all transparency I need and they ve been making me money for over a year now, DMD, FLY and CLAM especially.

TRANSPARENCY IS THE KEY, do not let your greed controls you.

If anyone needs any help about PoS, let me know, always glad to help. No referral links, no sales from my side, NOTHING. I help people cause I m a nice guy.

PoS is Proof of Share, right?

"Took away the rest coz I don't wanna get banned for posting off topic stuff that belongs in the altcoin section
My apologies..."

Dont worry, i did not meant it that harshly. The worse case scenario if the thread turn into an Altcoin discussion, it would get moved to the Altcoin discussion board. (<- and this talk belong in the Meta board lol. At least we can say the forum is "very well organised". Smiley )

PoS is proof of stake and regardless of what everyone may say, the one thing that decide if you should mine at home or not is whether you have cheap electricity or not (under 0.08$/kWh).

So an S7, if you can get it fairly cheap is actually a good option right now with the price of it dropping.

I dont have any X, though. The o's are just missing. Its the two last oo's in the chain, if that matters.

OK you have the dash. ----

Power cycle should fix it, most of the time. Especially if the unit was running all good.

I dont have any -. The o's are just missing. Its the same i get if i change voltage on a S4 without a power cycle.

It probably means that there is a failure of some sort in the last pair of ASIC's in the chain. If it were earlier in the chain then usually either nothing works or all the chips after the failure do not work. The next step would be to check a few voltages, but if it is a failed ASIC it's a tricky repair and you also need another failed board to remove a chip from.

Rich

I do have 2 failed board but i doubt i should do this kind of work. (Extracting and replacing the chip) i mean i've had trouble resoldering an uart cable.
And for 2 ASIC its not really worth shipping it out to say you or sidehack for repair. I'm mostly worried on if this can cause further deterioration to the board/controller/psu if i continue to run the board. What do you think?

A chain just popped after a soft reset at 28 ASIC and missing a bit of hashrate. Any idea of what to try and such? Beside the obvious replugging and power cycling?

I bought a broken S5 last year (end of it) and i got a blade with 4X. Nothing much can do done really ... power cycle may helps if you're lucky but mine always got the 4X now ;-)

This board is broken ... i cannot hash at more 281 for the freq and it also mien for like 1 hour before it stops.

I wish we had the schematics to fix them ...

Some one is selling S7 (probably B9) below retail on eBay. Did anybody have any transaction with this seller before?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antminer-s7-/141869289585?hash=item2108119071:g:JDQAAOSwoydWi4xy

Hmm, well, i dont know.

Delivery:
Estimated between Wed. Jan. 20 and Fri. Jan. 22
Includes 10 business days handling time after receipt of cleared payment.
Please allow additional time if international delivery is subject to customs processing.

So its a pre-order. The price is pretty close to B9, but if you get B9 in bulk order or coupon, it would be possibly much cheaper. Not sure about ebay's cut.

Anyways you're protected by the ebay buyer protection thing, but that does not mean its going to be hassle free.
1516  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: need some help for a newbie bitcoin purchase on: January 05, 2016, 07:34:29 PM
It was originally through couple of recommendations from my friend, and he was one of them. Others either didn't offer service anymore or I couldn't pay them from the country I am in right now from methods they wanted. In short, there weren't that many options available from the country I am in right now to buy BTC.

The way it worked was that I fill out an order, and an initial email of the order (seems auto generated) comes. It says to wait till the order is reviewed, then I will get the sender information. I send the WU money transfer, submit the mtcn number, then an email (also seems auto generated) comes to reply them with the receipt pic.

Here is why I trusted this service (additionally, there were no posts about the website that was recent. He made posts and replies up until very recently, I just couldn't find a recent one from another person other than him that made a post about him). The receiver information of the Western Union money transfer matched the information from the posts made before on here. Those posts seemed quite trusting of this service, and at times, the writer was at blame for not providing the right info. My friend also dealt with him, but couple of years ago as well.

He contacted me through the email that I provided; the content seemed copy and pasted type, but they were emails of instructions, so I expected them to be like that. And the email address matched the FAQ on their website, that it won't be from a typical email address like sfjsfj@ dsoijfsofj.com.

Here's the website for anyone interested: https://www.nanaimogold.com/

Idk, I had barely few options and this seemed like the best one from my judgement and circumstances...

Local bitcoins didn't offer anything around my country, that was the problem...ugh I guess I need to be lucky with this or cancel this money transfer if that's possible?

AFAIK you cant charge back western union transaction. The site seem legit on paper, but i can't tell. However some prominent online exchange accept credit, WU and bank transfer, so i'd probably go with that next time.

+8.2% = tennozer

I won't do mining again, difficulty increase is hurting home-miners very bad.

I dont know about that. The BTC price also doubled, so about the same income as i had few months ago. All in all, not bad. S1's are still profitable + i need the heat anyways.
1518  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: need some help for a newbie bitcoin purchase on: January 05, 2016, 07:16:37 PM
How did you contact him originally or did he contact you? I can see from his post history that it has been over a year since he has posted. I wouldnt worry too much yet but obviously it is a concern that his account may have been hacked. It just seems strange to buy from him being that he seems to be inactive. Some more information would be helpful.

Never heard of nanaimogold, why not use any trusted online exchange? How could he contact nanaimogold if he has been inactive for 1 year+?
