But wouldn't it over heat?

Not really, for instance 2 S1 fan which is about 2500~2800rpm is about the same cooling capacity as a single stock fan and its 20 less dB. You can do even better, add an enclosure, add a transversal box fan to blow air through the fins.

Well I cashed out.. I broke even. What would you recommend for the setup.. It was VERY loud in my house.

The aforementioned Scythe Kaze is very popular. Personally i just used S1 fans i cannibalized from the now undervolted/clocked S1 that run with some completely silent fans now.

There is also a 3d printed mod to add an enclosure.

If your electricity is really cheap you could go for S3's as well.
I did one scythe ultra kaze and a scythe slip stream to save a little bit.

That could work, the problem with only one fan seem to be that the air go all over because of the way the heatsink is made, with a second fan the air has a path of least resistance to a proper air flow.

Tbh i'm not sure why the S5 did not come with 2 fan, especially with that icky heatsink.

Also the topic was moved into mining speculation, not sure why.

Edit: Right now i run those at 2k rpm and get 40c temp with 10c ambient.

Hey Everyone!

Well, I only had my S5 for about a week.. fully invested and running. I had to sell my rig because the damn this was too loud.. I would like to get back into mining any ideas?

Diffrent rigs?

I'd recommend... a S5 ironically. Update to latest firmware and set fan speed to 20%, add a second fan. Pretty quiet and its probably the best GH/$/Efficiency ratio you can get if you have a decent electricity rate.
2485  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: October 26, 2015, 08:03:04 PM
Which firmware support voltage control of the S4?
Now with the cool weather, I can get 225 and stay under 50c, but I start getting random X's and sometimes the miner will die(no API or Web control) and I have to power cycle it.
Do I need to lower the voltage some to overclock, or raise it in this case?

The older one, you need to rewrite the firmware to a old firmware version, then setup a new CGMiner version. I'd recommend looking into getting the firmware off smits.
2486  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: CGMINER REJECTING EVERY BLOCK on: October 26, 2015, 08:00:34 PM
Cgminer is rejecting me every diff. what to do .

I says me low difficulty share of 1.4 sometimes 5.4 sometimes and so on
Please Help me

You're probably mining the wrong algorithm. What are you using the mine and what are you targeting (pool) what algorithm are you setting it to mine?
2487  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie needs training.. on: October 26, 2015, 07:07:24 PM
My question, what is mining and what makes it different from faucets?

Smiley from profitably point of view, both are same.

sorry, but I couldn't resist.

Profitability is very nice right now. You won't be earning a few BTC per month as a small miner by doing faucets. But with winter coming in the North, the difficulty not raising by much and the BTC price right now being very good, this is a good time to mine, if you don't have an exorbitant electricity rate.
2488  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 Hashes for 60 seconds and then stops... on: October 26, 2015, 06:49:09 PM
I tested each of the boards individually and the beeping continued to happen. However, I changed the fan with an extra PWM I had lying around and the beeping has now stopped.

Not sure why the original fan would cause that, however everything seems to be working well now. Thanks!

The S5 has protection if it cannot read the RPM it stop the miner from mining for protection. But its something you usually notice when you monitor the temps and RPM.
2489  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will the Banking Industry kill Bitcoin and keep the Blockchain? on: October 26, 2015, 03:48:55 AM
I really don't trust bankers of the world. I know they are watching bitcoin from far away and thinking about Blockchain technology. Banks may want to take this to their advantage.
As centralized cryptocurrency.

Banks already made clear what they want and thats the super ledger technology of the Blockchain, which they already been coming up with projects around it. Its not really going to effect BTC as such.

And a centralized cryptocurrency is called FIAT.
2490  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many confirmations to be sure about a transaction? on: October 26, 2015, 03:46:10 AM
6 confirmations is super safe, and is also a completely arbitrary number that the core devs came up with several years ago. In reality, you only need 1 confirmation to be relatively safe and 3 for large transactions just to be sure. In most cases, you can accept unconfirmed transactions, although with those, you should check the fee and for any dust outputs just to make sure that it will get confirmed.

Might be good to point out that the wallet itself typically do not let you spend coins before 3 transactions. At least the one i used so far. So it would be a good ballpark as to what is safe.

But in truth, i never had any problem with 1 confirmation, which make it too late to submit another transaction afterwards with a higher fee to create a double spending attack.

I have to agree 6 is the go to if you're talking about a critical amount of money.
2491  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where are my bitcoins? on: October 26, 2015, 03:41:50 AM

I recently bought some bitcoins after taking an online course.  Each of my purchases has an address, so I thought I would be able to go to a block chain browser site, put in one of the addresses, and see info about the transaction in which I bought some bitcoin.  But what I always get back is 0 transactions and 0 bitcoin value.  I've tried this at two different sites using 3 different addresses.

So I'm confused.  Does this mean that the site I purchased my bitcoins from (coinbase) isn't actually submitting a transaction to the bitcoin network when I buy coins?

Or is it that what I am trying to do doesn't make sense?  I thought that if I own bitcoins, then somewhere on the block chain there must be a transaction where somebody transferred some bitcoins to me, or rather, to the address created for that transaction which I am able to access when I log into my account.

Is there a way after buying some bitcoin to verify those purchases by examining the block chain directly, rather than relying on the site at which you make the purchase?

When you buy Bitcoins from Coinbase, they go to your Coinbase wallet. You then need to send the BTC to an actual address. When you do that you will have a TXID and even if unconfirmed you will be able to see the BTC being sent to the address you asked.
2492  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BM1384 Pod Miner plus trade-in/recycling - an interest and feasibility poll on: October 26, 2015, 02:23:38 AM
No, but I guess I got one on the museum shelf I could pull a cooler out of and see if it meets spec. My assumption is "probably not" but that' just an assumption.

In the end, are you going to get your hand on that stack of cooler you mentioned you could get? I'm guessing people might be interested in buying it packaged with the pods for ease of setting them up.

Some people probably already got their coolers planned out but it might be a handy 1 stop solution for others.
2493  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Need help identifying a bitcoin miner on: October 26, 2015, 02:19:35 AM
I got a bitcoin miner and i dont really know what i have.so please if anyone knows what this is .let me know

Look like a very old block erupter blade setup. What does it do? 200gh at 600+ watts? Thats is one old antiquity.

nope : it's an avalon 2 clone. 220 ~ 230 GHS  .   ( if needed i still got 2 blade available for sale )  Grin

I see i had a bad source. I was using this as source;
http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1630347226_1/In-stock-BTC-asic-miner-Bitcoin-miner-Super-Hot-Avalon-Asic-Bitcoin-Miner-font-b-Block.jpg

Which was tied to an auction on Aliexpress that has suddenly disappeared.

Look like i had the efficiency ratio right however? (Abysmal)
2494  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New to Bitcoin, Having Issue with Wallet on: October 26, 2015, 02:16:32 AM
What the heck is FastCoin? xD I only use Coinbase and blockchain.info, as they provide convebience, and coinbase pays your transaction fees.

fastcoin is an old coin, that had the block time very fast, under 1 min or 30sec, i don't remember now the exact time, but it caused a lot of orphan and it died fast

Ethereum has a very fast block time and its doing okay-ish right now. Its definitively faster than fastcoin now, but as with all alt coin, its future is bleak.
2495  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cloud mining, can it still pay out? on: October 26, 2015, 02:14:54 AM
if you are trying to invest in cloud mining then you want to lose money rather go and gamble it

You got a point man, rather gamble it on a reputable casino site than investing it on an obvious cloud mining ponzi Wink

Same way - better invest in reputable cloud mining service (HashNest) than gamble in ANY casino..

Anyway never invest more than you can afford to lose!

+1
It's why if it is possible I propose to invest for free so people can see from inside if it is worth...and above all to see if it was worth...

ehh.. i give a try to your "shares" Wink but, you must know that in my opinion this system looks like Ponzi..  Roll Eyes

Then you will know a day...
40 years ago or so one heard all the day at the TV and radio:
It looks like Canada-dry,but it is not Canada-dry...
So it is with my sites...it looks like a ponzi but it is not a ponzi.

Please be patient...soon one will know the truth and be sure;I respect your opinion.

Sure its not a Ponzi, its Bitmain. But that doesn't change the fact that the hosting fee are so high you're looking at marginal return after your break even. And since it take so long the hardware itself will have devalued heavily, and you can't resell it at a good value at that point because of how expensive taking it out of Bitmain's centers and receiving it is.
2496  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S5 Hashes for 60 seconds and then stops... on: October 26, 2015, 02:09:03 AM
Hello all,

I have a Bitmain Antminer S5 that hashes properly for 1-2 minutes. Once it reaches it's maximum hash rate it stops hashing and begins beeping. There is plenty of power and a fan is connected to the PCB controller board and shows 1,680rpm. Temperatures are in the mid-60's. It has a constant internet connection and I can see the 1-2 minutes of mining in the pool.

Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Any recommendations?

Hmm. Mid 60 is a bit high, its probably unlikely but it would do that if it was overheating, but it should probably resume later on.

I'd try with a different PSU to be sure its not the PSU failing.

Then i would run it one board at a time to see if its a board or the controller. Assuming its not the PSU.
2497  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: October 25, 2015, 09:18:01 PM
How much heat do these produce?

Utterly ridiculous question...but if I put a bunch of these in a corner of a room how well do you think they would heat that corner?

And also are they still for sale?

I believe the pre-order for the next/second/last batch is up. For generating heat, you wild need a lot of these. At the moment i'm running one at 2-3 watt~ i believe.
2498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you used Bitcoin as Real money to buy Real/physical goods? on: October 25, 2015, 09:08:59 PM
Yes even if the bitcoins  called  ecurrency you can buy it anything you want. Honestly i use bitcoin and exchange it to real money to buy our foods and renting my house..

Indeed Bitcoin nowadays is real currency, some people tried to call it everytime as "virtual currency" but i think they re wrong. Because simply we can use Bitcoin totally as the other currencies to buy food and drinks, to purchase goods and services as you noticed here

The proper term would be Ethereal currency i suppose? Its not gold but its not really any more or less real than FIAT which is pretty intangible too, since its just a value written on paper, or plastic nowadays.
2499  Other / Meta / Re: Seriously? "WARNING: This user is a newbie.." on: October 25, 2015, 07:53:10 PM

Hugroll is right, one reminder attached to first message is enough. But if every next message looks like this, you really appear like a scammer to other members.

Get over it bro, it only takes a month to reach jr. member so if you want to remove that warning message, wait until you turn jr.

Chill. If you followed the topic you know I have been here for 2 years. So how does it work? You are tuning into Jr with a time or with an activity where you are actually logged in?

The quickest way I see it is to pass some certain amount of comments/posts.
why is this such a big deal to you?

I would have to agree.  You will be out of newbie in not a ton of time.  So it's not a lifetime sentence of having that or yes that would be a problem.

Before it there seemed to be a to common of a trend of people creating names like sellers of auctions or goods.  They would message people, in a hurry they did not notice was a newbie account and not real person.  So they got scammed.  It seems like this newbie warning has almost if not gotten rid of this which is awesome.

So it by far does more good then bad.

Yes you are right. That is just like a culture Lil
And that warning won't create a thought in anyone dealing with you like a Scammer. That is just a warning to make them aware that user might not be that what I am expecting.
For example when I bid in Auction I got a message from a user whose username was 'THEYM0S `. Since the username of real username is 'theymos'. So he tried to scam me for 2.1 bitcoin
Here is the link : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1204414.msg12694464#msg12694464

So people just ignore the message when the opposite trader knows he is dealing with a Newbie.
So, it won't affect you and your deals

You might have people prone to slapping a red trust on you if you refuse to prove you own the items you are trying to sell (With a picture + handwritten date/user forum name) or refuse to use escrow or go first.

But if you avoid scammy behavior, you'll definitively be fine.
2500  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Looking for an UP TO DATE ~~How to...~~ guide - Bitcoin solo mine / node on: October 25, 2015, 07:37:37 PM
I can find plenty of the how to guides on how to set up a full node and solo mine Bitcoin with older versions of Ubuntu and the older Bitcoin core's, but nothing recent. I have set up a full node in the past, but that was with a far older core.

I've tried wiggle my way through the process but always come up with some RPC errors that say something about RPC is not used anymore, use Bitcoin-CLI....

Soooo, I'm looking for a ~How To~ guide with step by step instructions ( preferably with the actual cli commands since I'm not a total Ubuntu/Linux guru ).

Now before you say - its un profitable to solo mine..... The node I'd like to set up is for one, to support the network, and two so I can solo mine with a single miner lottery style..... and for the education since bitcoin core has changed abit.

For reference, I would be using Ubuntu 14.04 64bit server since this is actually being installed on a Dell PowerEdge. The desktop version of Ubuntu is just a little too clunky on a server.

Thanks in advance....

May i recommend a simpler way to do this; with a pool?

You would pay 0.5% fee if you found a block, but that 0.5% is possibly recoup'd by the lower orphan rate mostly caused by the propagation effect.

The very trusted -ck's pool is how i would do it; http://solo.ckpool.org/
