Conversely, if you are a professional IT / hardware nerd, and you are some sort of freak who really enjoys tinkering for hours with software and hardware to improve performance, then mining is a fantastic hobby.
If the thought of spending hours and hours of constantly tinkering and improving and setting up mining computers does not appeal to you, you'll probably really regret get into this .

Signed.
I'm a LTC miner so would like to see the value go up, but MTGOX just can't handle the loads right now. They need more infrastructure. The volume at which the alt coins will be traded at is pretty intense. I don't see how they could effectively handle this load increase at all considering the current delays with BTC.

Lol.
Got to watch out for 'the Jews'.
Yup I see a whole bunch right outside my window. They are wearing uniforms and kicking in the doors. Buckle down..!
Hey is that Larry David!
edit: just to be clear trying to be a very sarcastic dumb ass and think this thread is pretty stupid.

The ease at which the big few currency exchanges get overwhelmed is a bit of problem. Hopefully this will work out soon. They don't have the network infrastructure to be able to handle the rapid volume that currency exchange dudes work at.
I'm happy to see a temp drop though personally. Hopefully it will follow with mining difficulty.... any bit helps...
|
|
|
As a new hobbyist miner guy I can't believe how fast difficulty has gone up...
Started mining mostly LTC in late March, difficulty was 78ish... and it's looking it'll go to 285 in two days. From 78 -=> 280 in about two weeks.. ! Pretty insane. Glad I'm just really enjoying it as a hobby and didn't drop too much into hardware..

Currency speculators have been known to be harmful to currency markets Not that I have anything morally against them...fair enough for them... but in the bigger picture another big exchange is desperately needed. If there were 2 x mtgox things would be in much better shape. Any predictions for tomorrow? I'd say back around $220?

I hope bitcoin doesn't continue it's meteoric rise. I hope it stabilizes a bit while the infrastructure and support for the currency grows. .. And then slowly raises for a long time Sky-rockets lead to crash landings a lot of the time. But it is true that Bitcoin is a different breed of beast altogether, making predictions even more hard than it is for the usual kind of stocks and goods that can be bought. Bitcoin is an entirely new kind of resource that still has to grow stronger roots in our bloated world corpse of an economic cluster**** before it will be able to weather all the storms coming.

Ok thanks.
Sorry to anyone if I seem hasty to judge Novacoin negatively.
After reading up on last night I didn't find much info, read some claims of some sort of shady stuff going on, and all the pools seemed offline, so that's how my opinion formed. Certainly be great if an official website & wiki were set up.
I didn't realize it was such a new coin at all either.

Really there isn't a whole lot of information to be found on Novacoin. Here's some info: https://github.com/CryptoManiac/novacoin/wiki/FAQIt has no hard cap limit has a 2billion limit. But this isn't a big factor because I don't think many people expect it to last anywhere near that long. I think they should rename it Specul-coin myself But you never know. Maybe it'll stick around who knows.

Ok thanks. I'll give that a go maybe for a few days.
For a coin with such a poor rep it has a surprising amount of value.

Thought I'd give some solo Novacoin mining a go last night just for kicks. I wanted to experiment with solo mining and liked the lower difficulty of Novacoin with my two 7950's, so gave it a whorl.
Didn't have much luck. Does anyone mine NVC anymore at all? The difficulty in cgminer showed as something ridiculous. I think it was 43m !
Then I tried to set up a LP with a pool. Only to find that every NVC pool is pretty much gone.
What's up with is coin? So basically it was just a big pump and dump scam right?
Is anyone still mining it? As far as I can tell it pretty much only exists as a speculative sorta penny stock at BTC-E ... is that a correct appraisal? I know its widely considered a shady coin so surprised it is still around at all.

Glad I'm not the only with high stales. Thought it might be just my config! I'm going between 12% - 26% stale, which seems pretty crazy (though I'm a new miner though, haven't got a feel for what is normal). 1/4 of my production lost to stales is too much. I'm going to setup automatic pool hopping next chance I get to mitigate high traffic / downtime / lag... edit: been watching last 15 mins. Been amazingly all over the place. Steady at 15% for most of my cards and then whammo, goes nuts, even had a stale of 44% for one poll. That kind of lost efficiency really gets me right here [points to heart] edit 2: its possible the high stale rate is in part due to over estimation of hashing rates. I don't think my 7950 is doing 740-odd k/hashes as the portal reports, so perhaps it is a software reporting error which would account for like 8% of the stale value.. .

Hey.
If this falls through would be interested in selling the shares separately, or only all together?
I'd like to buy some more. But prob only 1 or 2.
I'm a current investor in the CH group buy.

Hopefully KNCMiner is legit We definitely need more ASIC companies. With the amount of money they could make just by selling the machines, I'm sure there will soon be no shortage.

I don't see how anyone could figure Av. 3 to be a bad buy.
Sure, like any other dude would have loved to been into batch 1 or 2 of course. What an incredible investment that turned out to be.
Batch 3 though, by all accounts, still looks like a terrific investment in the bigger picture.
I mean if you are worried about the hash rate increases coming just imagine where you'd be with no ASIC at all (like most people). You certainly got more reasons to be happy than sad about this one.
And also consider the hoards and hoards of folks that bet on the BFL horse instead of the Avalon one. We're in much better position than those poor souls as well.
Things could only turn out badly if, in the remote chance, Avalon couldn't ship because of new shipping restrictions / it gets lost in the mail, or BTC suffers a massive collapse. I think either possibility is pretty remote.
short version: No

Thanks for posting Haven't built a Linux miner yet but this time is rapidly approaching 8D

My 700W Corsair is coming along nicely with my 2 x 7950 rig now that I've had time to work on the system.
The reason why it was crashing out before was because I *very* dumbly knocked one of the cards one of the last time I was fiddling with my fans. Some of the pegs/teeth were hardly half engaged -- surprised it even ran at for 20 mins and even more surprised I didn't burn out any parts with that dumb move of mine.
Reading this thread and some other articles recently on PSU's think I have new respect/understanding for Gold rated PSUs. Does seem like its a better choice in Wattage savings and reliability to go for the more expensive PSUs when they are going to be running 24/7 @ top Wattages like most miners are.

Really! 3 to 1 ratio? I knew ppl underclocked their GDDR memory but didn't realize it was by this much.
Does anyone know if the ratio holds true for scrypt mining?
