By the way, if anyone has what it takes to build a killer exchange, email me at ryan@xwaylab.com. I'll invest with capital, code and business straightaway. The exchange guys don't know how to talk to people. The landscape is broken. A fix is needed. nicely put, you should teach them a lesson zhou

Hi everyone,
I just heard about bitcoin this week on the Max Keiser show. I downloaded the client last night and started running it. It says that it is synchronizing with network, and is very slowly downloading (in comparison to other internet activity) over 155,000 blocks of transaction history, while my hard drive is running almost continuously. Can someone tell me, is this client a continuous resource hog, or will it chill out once it catches up with the download?
Thanks, Tim - from New Mexico
yeah it will "chill out" and welcome to the forum

I find that the "transaction time" shown in the client is actually the receiving time of the transaction but not the sending time.
When old wallet was opening and downloading new blocks, it shows that there is a new transaction one minute ago, but in fact it was three months ago. This behaviour is really confusing and, even more, it shows ten thousands confirmation for that one minute transaction. I can only go the blockexplorer to find the correct date and remember that this transaction was sent between my wallets. Rescan does not solve this problem. Also, it is a problem that there are no simple way to check this in the client.
I really think the blocking time or sending time should be display in the client instead.
+1, had to figure that one first time i used the 0.5 client

... half that hates it... is most of the organizers. ...
you have anything to prove that statement... ? i'm not picking on you just trying to find out if ows leaders are honest people or have some hidden agenda to follow. I have a hunch... Just from discussions with the people I've talked to. I don't have any links to facts or evidence. They're good people, they just can't come to trust the Bitcoin network. got it, with enough time they will start trusting when people around them use bitcoin daily

Sorry to hijack, but I'm actually having a bit of an issue getting a transaction to go through. It's only 1BTC so not a huge deal right now, but I'll be annoyed in the future if 1BTC is suddenly worth $500 or something daft Anyway, I have a secure version of Ubuntu that I use just for my wallet (I'm a Windows guy generally, and Linux confuses me for the most part, but I can just about find my way around Ubuntu). So the blockchain was halfway through downloading the other day, when I decided to send 1BTC to an address. Once the blockchain finished (took forever by the way, we really need a way around that) the transaction is unconfirmed. On Windows it's easy enough to use the rescan option, but I couldn't figure out how to do it in Ubuntu I deleted everything aside from the wallet, and it's in the slloooooow process of downloading the blockchain again. I'm not confident it'll confirm this time though either. Is anyone able to tell me how I add the rescan flag to Bitcoin 0.5 in Ubuntu? I'm not even sure how to navigate to wherever the bitcoin "executable" is located in the terminal to be honest sorry to answer the hijack if you know how to open a terminal you're already halfway there, so open one up and type "bitcoin -rescan", minimize the terminal and the client should start after taking a bit more time than usual. When it starts you should see "lost" transactions and balance updated correctly. Close it gracefully from the menu and when you see the prompt again in the terminal window you know bitcoin has closed completely. Now start it from your usual icon and enjoy having resolved the problems. Thanks Para. So there's no need to navigate to the bitcoin directory? Is Linux smart enough to just understand the Bitcoin entry no matter where I type it in a terminal? actually yes, but only if you installed bitcoin from an ubuntu ppa (repository) through a packet manager (apt-get for ex.). If you compiled bitcoin for yourself or downloaded an already made binary you will have to navigate to that dir before launching. To fix that just copy the binary file to "/usr/bin" and you should be able to launch it anywhere.

i think you should uncomment the lines related to rpc connection from your bitcoin.conf file, remove the # # JSON-RPC options (for controlling a running Bitcoin/bitcoind process)
# server=1 tells Bitcoin to accept JSON-RPC commands. server=1
# You must set rpcuser and rpcpassword to secure the JSON-RPC api rpcuser=Ulysseys rpcpassword=YourSuperGreatPasswordNumber_385593
# By default, only RPC connections from localhost are allowed. Specify # as many rpcallowip= settings as you like to allow connections from # other hosts (and you may use * as a wildcard character): rpcallowip=10.1.1.34 rpcallowip=(removed)

I copied the encrypted wallet. Put the original back in the safe. Unencrypted the copy. Put the wallet copy in an empty client. Sent some coins. Deleted the copy.
try running with -rescan parameter one time using your main (original) wallet, the transactions are saved in the wallet file so if the original didn't see one of them but has the priv key from reserve then it should appear and balance updated correctly

Thanks for the reply.
I did look at that but it didn't look like a group effort. Just looked like one lone guys personal app. U really think that's safe? just asking....
i meant to say i have seen that advice all over but all from same guy and is his app.
i don't really understand what you're saying, if you refer to the ppa (repository) then yes it's the good one https://launchpad.net/~bitcoin/+archive/bitcoin
|
|
|
probably you are missing some dependencies, it happens allot in linux make sure you add the new ppa with "sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin" then do "sudo apt-get update" and install bitcoin with "sudo apt-get install bitcoin-qt". That's all

Very nice job guys. I wonder though what happend with the amount of confirms on transaction? Why did you guys remove this little piece of handy information?
Edit: Also, I get these black rectangles popping up when i hover over my recent transactions. Not sure if its just me.
lot of people complain about tooltips, black rectangles in your case, not showing up correctly in ubuntu. Try changing your theme settings. It worked for me
