I've had some time to sleep and think on this, now, and the more I think about it, I'm just left terrified about the implications this ordinal stuff has for Bitcoin.

I see it as a very real existential threat.

I sincerely hope I am dead wrong.

I'm not an expert when it comes to this new Ordinal thing and how it is implemented, but the possibility of "polluting" the Blockchain with bad data got me seriously worried. The issue here is not so much that it is possible for someone to insert child pornography and/or top-secret defense documents in the Blockchain (which in itself is unsettling), but the fact that the Blockchain is immutable and thus cannot be altered, and this is by design. So, this offensive/sensitive data will have to be there forever, and this could provide a strong reason for TPTB to attack/ban Bitcoin "for the common good".

I assume that, if this ever becomes a problem, it should be possible to handle via a fork, with the new code base removing this feature and also somehow removing all offensive/sensitive content. Said fork will have near-full consensus, so it will become the new, sanitized Bitcoin. The Bitcoin ecosystem should be able to handle this. Another battle, another win for Bitcoin.

Still, all this mess upsets and worries me. Hopefully, Bitcoin will come out of this stronger than ever, as it has done so many times.

Nope, no sorcery, luck or the Fed ( Cheesy ), just this little math thingie:

Sure, this is so localized it may well be Fed-or-whatever-else-induced noise, but it's still fun to comment on and attempt to predict such UPpities...

Does this formula have any other meaning than the result is 21*106? Which is, of course, a great number.

[...]

Note the term 50 / 2i.

Here you can watch Saylor educating Laura about this.

It certainly looks like $24,000 will be broken tonight.  Cool

An actual sorcerer in the making.  did you throw a dart with a blindfold on, or was your predictive method less random?   I will admit that we surely are getting a decent amount of ongoing UPpity price pressures, especially since the fed rate announcement.

[...]

I must be a pretty damn lucky blindfolded dart-throwing sorcerer, since price did break $24k... A new AYH, no? And then it dropped a little and is now hovering just under it. What's new?

I had some experiences like this in the past, when i was mis/underdiagnosed.
I'd try to get some natural help, for example 5HTP and L-Tyrosin, maybe some Ashwagandha extract too (If you don't get a sore throat from the latter, like a few other people).
Even if it makes you feel only -5/10 it's worth it.

I was giving Rick a long-winded brain-dump approximating the physical sensations, and came up with the following paraphrase.

"It's like all my neurons and synapse pairs are playing a unique high-speed game of Tetris, with only 6 lines of movement room to work with. Every time I want to make a move, every synapse pair has to pause, write out to disk the entire state of the game, and load it back up to the next nearest synapse pair. Unpause the game, and repeat for the next move across every synapse pair in your stupid gray matter.

Also, I'm not sure how this sensation is even possible to contemplate, but my stomach seems to have found a way to turn itself inside out.

Oh, did I mention these axe-splitting headaches?

Furthermore, why is the ground underneath my feet so wobbly? WTF is going on, dude?"

Bleh. It sucks, but I gotta get through this.

Self-improvement by removing an entire combo class of pharmaceuticals out of my system after a couple decades of directed use.

Time to get entirely clean for ranch life.

Have been absolutely alcohol sober for quite some time now, and finding I'm really enjoying life a lot more.

About 12 years ago I had to go through a very long and harrowing medical treatment, that involved regular self-injections and daily pills. I saw myself transforming mentally, to the point of nearly causing physical harm to myself and those around me, even those I dearly loved. I was advised by my doctor that this would happen, but one can't really be prepared for actually experiencing it. I could smell the distinct smell of the drugs on washed clothes, even several months after completing the treatment. The treatment was successful and I'm alive to tell the tale. Nothing to do with cancer.

Excluding painkillers for the occasional headache, I haven't taken a pill since then, and I intend to keep it that way. Problem is, as we're getting older we will all eventually have to start taking regular medications. Not against it, but trying to avoid it as long as I can, by keeping fit, eating well (not easy these days), and taking things easy. Bitcoin has helped a lot in that regard, I must say.

Wishing you all the best and I hope you keep your system clean of pharmaceuticals and alcohol. Esp. the latter is not worth the damage it can do to you, IMHO.

Bitcon fixes this! Grin Cool

There are ways to verify gold authenticity, but yeah, Bitcoin fixes that, and more.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine, but with silver beads. Turned out they were silver-plated beads. Problem is, he trusted the seller and bought them without checking...

That's exactly what Bitcoin removes: the need for trust. It's even better than cash, which can be counterfeited. I exclude BCH and BSV, because anyone who buys them thinking he bought Bitcoin is simply not fit to be a Bitcoiner. Sounds cruel, but it is what it is. Same with FTX/Celsius and keeping coins in exchanges.

BTW, don't blindly trust what OpenAI says. I asked it a technical question, and the answer was totally wrong (albeit with perfect English).

It learns though. I challenged its response, citing a source that proved it was wrong. It apologized, and answered correctly the next time I asked the same question.

Based on the few interactions I've had with it, it's a natural language-polished source of raw data, without much "concern" about their accuracy or even correctness. Don't rely on it. Not yet anyway.

Apparently its really good at coming up with creative solutions to coding problems. The way it "thinks" about coding is uninhibited by traditional concepts of what commands can or should be used for what, allowing it to generate sleek, perfectly-functioning code.

Very nice, but here's an important question: is the resulting code generated by the AI itself, or is it just being pulled off some page on the internet, based on the real (human) programmer's description and how well it matches the query? In any case, how can one be sure that the code is bug-free? Also, is the AI engine capable of avoiding, detecting, and possibly correcting, bugs that are more complex than syntax errors or simple overflow/memory corruption cases? I'm talking generally here, and not specifically about the code you posted.

The possibilities of an AI generating efficient code that goes beyond conventional coding practices is very exciting, but I would avoid using the generated code in a copy/paste fashion. I'd prefer to have the AI check my own code, in case it can spot bugs I missed. But then, not everyone would want to send their own code to an AI.

Regardless of the above concerns, I'm sure we'll see significant and very exciting developments in the AI field.

Morning WOers!

Speaking of nocoiner --> coiner conversions, y'day I was having dinner with an old friend (nocoiner). He asked me about the B-word and I jumped at the opportunity to educate him. I knew I had a chance when we got past the "too expensive" barrier. I think a new coiner is in the making--probably for the wrong reasons (i.e., trusting me, instead of understanding the beast), but he said he will work on that (ordered one of Antonopoulos' books right there in front of me). He is tech-literate, so he can do code and algorithms and stuff.

Guys and gals. We are all blessed. There's no need for toxicity and bitterness in WO. Enjoy you corn, do your DCA/BTFD, have fun, have lots of sex, spread the love (but always be OPSEC-aware).

Back to the Matrix...

You have converted some nocoiners to coiners Gachapin?  It's not easy.

[...]

It sure is not easy. Of all friends/colleagues/relatives I've tried to introduce to Bitcoin, about 80% completely ignored me. Most of the remaining 20% became shitcoiners and ended up in much less profit, or even in losses. The problem everyone seems to be having with Bitcoin is that "it's too expensive...". Go figure.

I can count only 3 people that actually listened to me and currently own Bitcoin. All 3 did it because they just trust me. I don't think they really have a clue.

Strange thing, Bitcoin...

Are they still alive? Ping... Ping... No reply?

Damn.  Cheesy

I used to hate ChartBuddy. Now it's my main source of price movement at work (not allowed to visit chart sites for...reasons).

And it's a great WO ping signal.

Go ChartBuddy!

Hopefully no WO peops got caught here, we have always warned NYK in these here parts and I specifically remember the gemini lending questions in here.

I hope so too, although, over the years I've found myself becoming more desensitized and cynical when it comes to the handling of BTC. I see the loss of coins due to FTX, Celsius, Luna, now Gemini, as a kind of filtering mechanism, a "survival of the fittest" type thing. Maybe even a "good" thing. In the end, it's impossible to stop it from happening. There will always be shitcoiners and those who are greedy enough to lend their BTC to companies for profit. And there will always be SBFs and FTXs, that take advantage of coiners' ignorance and greed. Cruel and insensitive as I may sound, I won't feel sorry for those who lose their coins that way.

Thanks to Timelord2o67, owlcatz and everyone for their replies to my post and for trying to make sense of it all.

I understand some here sympathize with yogg, even considering offering a helping hand. We are humans and this is a human reaction. I personally wouldn't offer any help whatsoever to this person, but, IMHO, any help offered should be strictly NON-monetary.

Hope this mess gets sorted out to a degree, although I very much doubt card holders can be made whole, considering the loans, premiums, and that the stolen funds have probably already been gambled away...

What a shitshow indeed!  Sad
436  Economy / Collectibles / Re: My Cold Keys Just Got Swiped! All Halving Sets!! on: January 16, 2023, 08:15:48 PM
I've been following the ColdKey/yogg developments with interest since cygan posted an invitation to WO members to buy WOhat-decorated ColdKeys.

First off, I'm deeply sorry for all those affected by the scammer and lost BTC, loans, premiums and the value of their ColdKeys as collectibles. I'm not a collector myself, have never owned any such cards, and have never even heard of yogg or any of the forum members in the collectibles space.

After reading the conversation between yogg and owlcatz, I must say that this man should not receive ANY sympathy whatsoever from you guys. NONE! I saw a man who did not display any genuine regret/remorse about what he did, never offered to return (even part of) the stolen funds to their rightful owners, didn't even dare to make a post here in the forum explaining what happened, and threw cynical responses to owlcatz, such as "make me" and "write to my attorney". Based on the evidence presented here in this and other threads, yogg continued swiping cards even after his conversation with owlcatz where he stated that all remaining cards were safe. This makes him a liar and a thief.

Sadly, this project has failed due to the actions of a weak man who sold his name and reputation for $50k. Cruel as it may sound, I don't think such a fraudster, liar and thief deserves any sympathy whatsoever. Let his suffering be his punishment for what he did to all of you and to the Bitcoin community.

The way I see it:

- ALL ColdKey cards should be considered as compromised and should be peeled/swiped.

- I would not put my hopes up for legal action, but those with the energy to pursue it could give it a try.

- I believe that collectibles like ColdKey, which rely on trusting a human being (the creator) to discard the keys after creating the items, go fundamentally against the Bitcoin ethos and principles. Bitcoin was created to address exactly these problems, and it has succeeded -- this is what makes Bitcoin what it is. Collectible items that rely on trusting an individual for the security of funds, essentially and in principle negate this all-important property of Bitcoin. "Don't trust, verify." becomes "Trust and hope not to get scammed." I'm not sure if I would consider such a collectible item to be a true representation of Bitcoin and what it stands for.

Big kudos to cygan for promising to compensate ColdKey holders, and delivering on that promise. He got dragged into this mess and is doing his best to rectify the situation.

As a final thought, I would suggest the creation of collectibles in which the artwork itself would be the valuable part, and there would NOT be any private keys inserted in them by the creator. The artist could include a region on/inside the piece, where the final owner can place his/her own private key that only he/she knows. There could even be a mechanism for this, but it must be shipped blank and be reconfigurable by the final owner. Something like a collectible version of Cryptosteel. In my view, this type of collectible would stay true to the ethos and principles of Bitcoin while being fully secure against scams like yogg's.

I'd call it a dead alpaca bounce. Just look at that neck!
438  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 13, 2023, 05:05:48 AM
Regarding ColdKey, the project may look cool and satisfy some coiners' egos or whatever, but from the very beginning it was an idea based on trusting the creator, which is an instant no-no when it comes to Bitcoin. I personally would not trust my keys to anyone (not even my parents or siblings or GF/wife or whoever else). Not because I don't love them or trust them in the general sense. But it is a fact that all of us are human beings and are thus prone to mistakes and weaknesses, which can lead to compromising the security of whatever it is we want to protect.

When it comes to Bitcoin, you keep a low profile, NEVER reveal your keys to ANYONE, never advertise specific amounts or even ownership of any coins, never brag about how rich you are, and never compromise your OPSEC.

There's no need for ColdKeys. The best ColdKey is stored in our neurons, and should stay in there, and stay immaterial. Just like Bitcoin.

I'll have to look into getting one of these when I need a new on as it took me forever to de-google my last one.

Just to clarify, the Huawei P30 Pro includes Google Services, so you don't want that. You'll need to get any model after the P30 Pro (check to make sure). They are de-Googled by design, and you get the benefit of having a newer, better phone too. They do have Chinese versions of the equivalent services though (Petal Maps, Huawei AppGallery, etc.), so there's that. Not even sure if one can really avoid the Big Brother these days... 1984!
