Yesterday, a neighbour asked me if I know anything about "cryptocurrencies". A couple of years ago I would jump at the opportunity to explain to him all about it, teach him how to set up a wallet, open a Kraken account, etc. Now, I just replied "I've been reading about it, seems to be a thing. Don't know much more than that though, sorry..."

Can't be bothered anymore. It's the same old story, the more others know about you and what you can do, the more work and trouble will fall on you, because, in the end, it comes down to human nature. Everyone's looking for a free lunch, a pill the can swallow and suddenly solve their lives' problems. Well, I say "fuck you, get on your bike and work for it."

Wow I thought I’m alone in this... trust me I used to sit down with pen and paper to explain this to my seniors and peers. And most of the time it would end like “oh that’s a big bubble”...or “I didn’t get it, prove to me how Bitcoin is worth $6,000”.... “there are only 21 million bitcoins, that’s not how money works”.... and most of the time usually will stop here when they will hear “yes uncle, you need internet all the time”.

I just keep everything to myself or put it here on WO Smiley

Yup, I've definitely stopped tying to explain btc to anyone these days. It's not as if there isn't enough info on the interweb now for anbody with sufficient motivation to go and find out for themselves.

I introduced several friends to bitcoin in 2013. One invested almost immediately and hodled for a few years, cashing out most of their stash near the 2017 top. They made a tidy sum but their stash is now very small and they've largely missed out on this run.  Another friend left it far too late to buy in, and did so near the 2017 top and also bought a load of shitcoins because they "couldn't afford bitcoin".  Roll Eyes They then panic sold everything during the following bear market and made a huge loss. The other day I was disheartened to hear that the same person is now buying shitcoins again. They did at least admit that they should have listened to me properly in 2013.

So I feel like I was half successful with the first friend and completely unsuccessful with the second friend, even though the info I explained to them was identical. So my conclusion was that some people are just not ready for this and I can spend my time in better ways.

As the old saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink."

Unfortunately, some people who know I have bitcoin seem not to care for my opsec and will happily discuss the fact that I hold btc with anyone they feel like. Which is annoying, since I don't go around talking about anyone else's finances. So I am wondering how to address this issue. It didn't seem to matter many years ago that I had told a few of my friends about my btc holdings but now, at these prices, it's something I wish I hadn't done.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Same thing has happened to me. A long time ago I made the mistake of telling a few people close to me that I own some BTC. At that time 1 BTC = $200-$500, so it was no big deal. Not anymore. The problem is that these people can potentially disclose that information to others, and this raises serious OPSEC/$5-wrench issues. Of course the mistake was all mine, but frankly, at the time, I never expected that Bitcoin will rise so much. Fortunately, the people in my circle that know about my stash are very few and generally trustworthy, and I've warned them not to tell anyone, so I guess the situation is somewhat under control.

What you could do is use the "boating accident" technique. Just say that you gambled it in shitcoins and lost 90% of it. Or that you lost your seed and cannot access your coins, and bitch about how bad Bitcoin is for not having a backdoor in case you lose your keys. Pretend to be really sad/depressed/angry/bitter for a couple of months, then say you've accepted your loss and moved on.

As they say, wealth is not easy to hide... It's tough being rich, and I can now feel it more and more, as those ants work hard, paving the way to $1M/corn... Maybe hire some bodyguards as the song says... LULZ!

Looking at Kraken's depth chart, there is no large sell wall at 50k € like it used to be earlier on in the race. I guess 50k € is not the real reason the price is not increasing. Other factors must be at play... Or just the usual King Daddy sideways break before the next pump. Also, that Stimulus Check inrush into Bitcoin did not really happen. Nothing major, just an ant pump so far. Which is OK, I was not expecting anything bigger. S2F model being confirmed to a tick.

We've waited 3 years. What's another 3 months? Easy! And no, we ain't selling a single sat.

Onwards & upwards!

HoDL.

We have been bouncing between 50k ish and 60k ish for more than a month now.
Zoom out to 30 days and check for yourself.

Sorry. I don't consider bouncing up and down between $43k and $58k as being "$60k".

I see it as the battle for $50k. When we hit $60k a week ago, I figured $50k was finally a done deal.

Well the same was true for 9000, we bounced of it constantly, just like we now bounce of 60k, that's what the vegeta memes was all about, hence my analogi.

I blame the euro. We are at the €50k border.

Yes, this could be it. Those nice, round numbers that our brains love so much. Rest assured, 50k € will soon be outside the chart range. Next major target will be 100k $/€. The ones in between should be easier to conquer.

@BitcoinBunny: Merit-worthy! (sorry, I'm out.) Very nice and funny visualization of ivomm's dream! Lucky bastard, he escaped just in time! LOL!  Cheesy
1226  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 19, 2021, 04:40:00 PM
I've had a really fun dream last night. I am not joking, here it is: I was in my very big yacht with some friends having a champaigne party. I was kissing some girl, when I remembered I haven't checked the price for a very long time - a year may be. I started connecting the laptop with some antenas and got online. Then I saw the news that Bitcoin recently had hit $1 000 000. I got very excited remembering that I had over 5 Bitcoins kept for that occasion. But... I completely forgot my key phrase. I knew that I had another complicated method to get access to my coins from the files on the laptop, but in the excitement I couldn't remember that either. Then I noticed a green ligt in my eyes which started running as a small dot over the deck. I realized that this is a laser aim of an armed USA drone. I looked up at the sky and I saw a missile heading towards my boat. I managed to run and jump in the water and after that the boat exploded. The water was on fire which started to spread above my head. I was swimming underwater keeping my breath until I escaped the fire. Then I began to doubt that this was not real but a dream. Of course in RL I have neither millions nor a yach nor a GF. But guess what was the only thing that seemed unrealistic in this whole story? That's right - I haven't checked the price for a year!!! That's impossible! Everything else is completely legit, it can happen! That's how I know that these boating accidents are true!!!  Wink

That's a nice story there!

Funny thing, I'm also having lots of dreams lately. Some good, some bad, some scary, some with corn, some with hookers, some with a combination of the two. No Lambos. No blow. The problem is that I almost always forget everything if I don't write it down the moment I wake up, and I seldom write it down... The sooner you wake up after the dream, the more vividly you will remember it. There are methods that detect REM (Rapid Eye Movement), which means you're in a dream, and wake you up right after REM stops, so that you can recall all the little details.

Psychologists say that having dreams frequently is an indicator of a happy/healthy mental state, whereas not having dreams at all is a bad sign. In that respect, there should be a strong correlation between Bitcoin price and dream activity. The higher the price, the higher the dream activity, until 1 BTC = $1M and your dreams become indistinguishable from reality!  Grin

This is normal. You are fine. Prepare to be mind-blown by what's coming.

Hey, here's a thing that came to my mind pretty often since a month or two, and finally i actually remember that i said last year, that i keep you all up with the news.
It's about my GDPR Art 13. "Right to be forgotten" request to ledger.fr, regarding deletion of all my personal data from their systems.

So i finally got an Email from Ledger, about two months after the original request, that they successfully and permanently deleted my data.

Here it is:

Quote

Hi,

Thanks for your data deletion request. We have taken appropriate steps to ensure the erasure of your personal data associated with the information you provided from our systems and relevant third-party providers.

Note that some of your personal data may be further retained by Ledger in order to comply with applicable data retention laws and other legal requirements (eg. tax and accounting requirements, fraud prevention).

Kind regards,

The Ledger Privacy Team

No mentioning of my Name, Email or like that in the message text. Seems legit  Cool

It is legit. I received the exact same email (down to the last character) about 2 months ago. I also promised to report here and forgot about it... Hopefully they have wiped most/all of our data from their databases.

For those looking at health insurance, you might want to take a look at life insurance too. Start with Term Life 10 years or something similar. It is "pure" life insurance with no add ons, and is relatively cheap (depending on your age) for the coverage.

Something like $40 per month for $500k coverage for about 40 years old. Older is higher up to around 85 years old and the last decade is much much higher in premiums.

Then, the private life insurer might also have health insurance in addition to any government health care benefits you may already have in your country. It may be worth it to add to anything you have right now if you can afford a little bit, working or not.

As for our favorite hated alt, everything that didn't happen yet on bitcoin happened there, ICOs, NFTs, DeFi ... so it's probably worth it to take another unbiased look, and why you have the big boys also looking at them. There are literally thousands of projects that are on that space, with more than 90%, maybe even 95% not going anywhere, but there is that small 1% hidden gem and whether or not the tech is good, it might spark and give you excellent returns. DYOR.

+1 WOsMerit.

As for the term "Life Insurance", I interpret it as a pension (a lump sum and/or monthly payment) after a certain age, say, 60 y/o.

As for when I die, frankly, I don't care at all what will happen to my body. They can bury it, burn it, or throw it in the trash. When I die, that body won't be me. I'd recommend the cheapest and easiest way of disposing of it.
1229  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 18, 2021, 10:08:10 AM
Great news! Someone upgraded the Bitcoin protocol to allow for the purchase of NFTs!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmFjmvwPGKU

Thanks for this, I wasn't at all aware of "Colored Coins". Their website is down, they don't seem to be very popular these days, which does not take away from their significance. Speaking of popularity, for all we know, NFTs, in their current implementation, may die out sooner than we think, or they may not. This NFT thing is new to me and I need to read/research more about it to be able to have an informed opinion. The thing that bothers me is that it involves Ethereum, just like the ICO craze. I've never owned Ethereum and don't intend to, purely out of principle (I absolutely hated their blockchain transaction reversal fiasco that happened years ago). To me, anything involving Ethereum has a tendency to be a solution looking for a problem—yes, I'm that biased against it...

Will watch this space and see how things go. One should be open to new ideas and be ready to embrace and support them if they are worthy and useful in solving real problems and making our lives better. Having said that, history in this space has taught us time and time again that there is only one King Daddy, and that's Bitcoin. So, I would be much more supportive of NFTs that could use Bitcoin as the basis for their settlement layer.
1230  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 18, 2021, 06:41:40 AM
I'm still working, mostly because it's funny to not really care and be truly honest with people. And let's face it: I am too lazy to try and figure out how to sign up for my own health care.

So far they are thinking of promoting me, which would be bad.

Yes, Office Space is oddly accurate.

The health care issue is what's keeping me from retiring early too, and also the fact that I love what I do and would even be willing to pay to do it. The only negative aspect of employment for me is the fact that I belong to the usual "master-slave" hierarchy, formally at least, and this somewhat limits my freedom. It's more of a psychological thing though, I can't say I feel any serious pressure to do things I don't want to do. I'm happy and I don't really mind keeping things as they stand at the moment. But things can change, and the recent Bitcoin price appreciation, as well as the S2F model's predicted gigantic gains, will surely put things in a different perspective.

Health issues can, and will happen, and we'd better be prepared when they do. Being health-uninsured is a dangerous thing. If something really serious happens, it may not always be easy or desirable to liquidate some of your hard-earned-and-HeDL coins to cover the expenses. I've heard stories of people getting hospitalised due to accidents and ending up having to pay really huge amounts of money in health costs due to being uninsured.
1231  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] NFTs are good! on: March 17, 2021, 11:19:31 PM
I think that NFTs are awesome.  Not necessarily the particular NFTs being making headline trades right now—many of those are stupid; but then, many uses of Bitcoin have been stupid (especially early on)Nonetheless, the concept is awesome.

[...]

To this we agree. I also think the concept of NFTs is awesome. But I'm not quite sure about the current execution of the idea—I only started looking into it literally days ago. It does look like an ideal way for art/content makers to monetize their creations.

How about buying some art pieces now for $0.06, and selling them in a few years for $millions?* Here's something for all of us to think about.

* Why do I get a sense that I'll be reading this post in 10 years' time and be filled with regret and bitterness?

A couple of days ago, Biodom posted a recent interview with Michael Saylor, which I bookmarked to watch later. I just did, and it's a good one. Typical Saylor. I like his way of explaining the different concepts involved. Here's the interview again:

https://youtu.be/wnQJ8ROyhrM

A good watch in its entirety.

If you think it's merit-worthy, please do not merit me, but Biodom's original post above.

Edit: He discusses the idea of earning interest on his Bitcoin by lending it via services like Celsius. He says it's not worth the risk and hassle, just for a modest additional gain, when compared to the much higher overall Bitcoin value appreciation. He's a hardcore HoDLer!
1233  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 17, 2021, 07:46:40 PM
Nice borderline-ant pump I see...

Whatever the reason(s), it's beautiful, as it always is!

Let's hope $60k will be conquered for good in the coming days, and we'll soon make an attempt to take $70k. If that level is conquered in March, then I can see $100k in Q2 of 2021. I believe this is in line with the S2F model.

I'm already at moon level right now, but 2 moons (or 3, or 4) are always better than one.  Wink

Onwards & upwards!

HoDL.

Remember when ICO were offered and the startups all thought they were being so very cute and sly in the way of selling them off as assets?
Well the SEC shut that sh*t quite quick and after a while I am seeing them doing the same thing with these eventually.
They always seem to find that buttplug so to stop the stream in those loopholes the creators of these non-fungible things seem to always get around(exploit in the legal system?) at the start of their inception in the ether. Wink

... art, classic cars, collectables are not subject to capital gains, afaik, especially if the gains are one-off, i.e. not regular source of income.

... crypto is opening up multiple holes in the dyke of financial facism, SEC might be running out of fingers at some point.

Just imagine drug lords, mafia bosses and terrorists exchanging NFT pop-art pieces for thousands of BTC each. Why not? Even criminals can have an eye for art, no?
1235  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 17, 2021, 10:37:13 AM
As a mostly layman when it comes to maths (and sciences) funzies, could it be that one of the goals of continuing to attempt to calculate pi to further digits is to see if there might be a zero in there somewhere (I mean a last digit)? - and then we know how many actual digits pi has, rather than what seems to be an infinite number of digits without a last digit.

We already know the answer to this: Pi has an infinite number of digits (i.e., there is no "last digit"). This is because Pi is an irrational number (it cannot be expressed as the ratio of two integers). Proof of this dates back to the 18th century (Lambert, 1761). The square root of 2 (1.414...) is another well-known irrational number.

We all (except Jay) know that π is an irrational sonofabitch; but is he normal?  Shocked

* Wrathful nullius is the negative one, because ’e is powered to imaginary·π.

Yes, I just implied that 0 = -1.  Well, that’s not as bad as looking for the last digit of π.

I presume you're referring to Pi and not Jay.

Now, that's a challenge. I would bet that Pi is normal, but that statement is worthless...

Funny thing is that I was confused by the same thing when I read that nullius sentence, but I did not want to say anything to cause my lil selfie to appear MOAR dummer than I actually am, and that's why from time to time I present "deeper ideas" in "baby talk."

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

It's perfectly normal not to know that Pi is irrational. In fact, I'd say that it's MOAR normal not to know this, than to know it. Therefore, to answer nullius' question, I conjecture that both Pi and you, are normal (unproven in both cases).

Your comment sparked an interesting WO-style discussion, and that's a good thing.

FWIW, somehow I don't believe this "Stimulus Check inrush into Bitcoin" is going to be as dramatic as some of us are expecting. Dare I say that it may not even register in the charts. Why? Because I don't really believe that the average US citizen is really going to rush and invest $1200 in Bitcoin just like that. I mean, if all these people wanted to invest in Bitcoin, they would have done it already. Also, I expect that the ones who do invest their Stimulus Checks in Bitcoin will sell their coins as soon as the price increases enough to give them a decent profit. The problem is that most of these people won't do it because they somehow "saw the light" and understood what Bitcoin is all about, but just to make a quick buck.

I could be totally wrong, but that's the way I see it. Nothing will happen. Just a small blip in the charts. What's needed are big moves like Elon's and Saylor's. Big institutional investors that buy Bitcoin in bulk with the intention to HoDL, and publicize it in any way they can. That's what will drive the price up.

My .02 BTC     Hey, that's nearly a Stimulus Check's worth of corn!

Observing a nice little rise $56400 Smiley

Still for ants, but it should grow.

BTW, the Delta Investment Portfolio Tracker app (on Android) is working great. Notifications come nicely. Only bad thing is, so far they've been notifying me of BTC price drops... Hopefully. my phone will soon start bleeping constantly due to the expected UPpity!
1238  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 16, 2021, 04:19:55 PM
To the pi thing.. accountants use 2 digits, because that's all they know. Like, for fiat currencies.

The fact that the 3rd fractional digit of Pi is close to zero (3.14159...) makes the approximation Pi = 3.14 pretty accurate for simple calculations.

BTW, you can write the exact numerical value of Pi with just 2 digits: Pi = 10Pi.  Cheesy
1239  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] Missed Millionfold Gains on: March 16, 2021, 08:08:37 AM
All that being said, I am even worse off:  I didn’t buy Bitcoin at $0.06.  (And I didn’t CPU-mine back in 2009, damn it.)

Neither did most of the folks reading this.

In hindsight, Schoen made a stupid sale.  But he made a smart buy.  Did you?

Food for thought.

Well, I think I did. The difference between him and most of us, is that we knew what we were doing (or at least believed in it), while he didn't. If he did, he wouldn't have sold so early, and for such an insignificant total amount. In the end, it's not the relative gain that matters, but the absolute final value of one's wealth. It's much better to invest $50,000 and end up with $1M (20x), than to invest $1 and end up with $1000 (1000x).

Having said that, I also regret not buying Bitcoin at $0.06, and not mining it in the early days. I guess I did not know about it enough at that time, to realise its potential. Funny thing is, I hated the word "Bitcoin" when I first heard it, but now I find it one of the most beautiful-sounding words in any language!
