And just let this sucker blow on the cards?

If the case is going to be closed (with this fan as a side intake), you'd need to improve outflow as well somewhere else in the case...

sorry, i wasn't talking about design feasibility, rather the market feasibility... what any designer would need to know is the worth of his effort... if i develop a system and people still prefer GPU's over fpga rigs, then why would i want to waste my time?... in short if i could such a system in the market, how many people would want to buy it?

Double check your numbers for 5W and 900 Mhashes/sec...  If you still can produce at these specs, you'd have lots of interest...
4304  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: feasibility of a low price fpga solution on: June 21, 2011, 04:24:13 PM
I am a newbie in the BTC world and I was wondering what would be the feasibility of an fpga based hardware with these specs:

     900Mhashes/sec

     about 5 watt power consumption

     $1300-$1500 unit price

Hi. I'm also new to the BTC world, but I'm an electrical engineer and I've been following the threads on FPGA mining recently. I think that for that hash rate, your power target is off by about a factor of 25 and your price target is off by at least a factor of 2.

Disclaimer: I have not yet built, designed, used or measured an FPGA based mining rig. If one of the experienced FPGA miners drops in here, they may be able to provide a more accurate estimation. Maybe I'll play around with FPGA mining myself sometime, if I don't get distracted by a shiny object first. Wink

well what are fpga's worth for if they consume 5*25=125 watt?? it may rise upto 10 watt but not more....

I can design the system with above specs but i really need to know if such a system is feasible....

How can you know it's feasibility without a design?  I think you should try to design it... See what you can come up with.  I'll test it for you Smiley

Do you know how to make one with these specs and this price?
4306  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Need a second opinion on 4x 5830 setup running at 301 Mhash/s each on: June 21, 2011, 01:09:18 AM
So I have a system running with 4 XFX 5830s.
Win7 64 bit.
SDK 2.4
11.6 drivers (minimal install)

I'm using phoenix 1.5 from command line against slush.  each of the 4 instances is running at slightly over 301 Mhash/s

All 4 cards are set to 970/350 with 75% fan speed.

all 4 cards are next to each other.  The fan temps are: 76,76,83,64

Attached 1 monitor and using 3 dongles.

The current OC setting appear to be right up at the limits... If I go above 970, system becomes unstable.

One current and strange behavior is that once my monitor goes to sleep, if I "wake up" the system by say moving the mouse, the system freeze and I will need to reboot.  So, I don't touch it... it's been running for days now.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on maybe trying to squeeze out more Mhashes with currently loaded OS?

Side note:  with only 3 cards I was able to run the cards at about 308/309 Mhashes but it was OC'ed to 980-990.  With 4 cards 970 is the highest I can run at as long as I don't wake up the monitor.

Obviously one option is to never let the monitor go to sleep... but this in itself isn't a big issue, I can leave it be....

I'm more interested in hearing some suggestions on how to squeeze more out of these cards...

phoenix is launched via a batch file:

:start
phoenix.exe blah blah blah
go to start
This takes care of phoenix.exe crashes.

Additionally, I have a scheduled task that kills all phoenix.exe instances every 30 minutes. and above batch files just launches it anew.

Thanks for your input!

Ah! Running 1Ghash, and found 2 blocks in less than 24 hours!!!

Damn I'm lucky, Solo time? Tongue

Just luck...  You may not find another one for a month or longer (on average)... If you continue finding them this often though, consider yourself just damn lucky and go ahead and try solo.  If that continues, everyone will want to know what your setup is... Smiley

I think it's the cable.  I'm getting a replacement sent out.

If I plug the card on the mobo, everything is fine.

Hmmmm...

Why don't you switch to a different power supplier and cut your cost in half?

Can you check into that?
4312  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: FOR SALE: PCIe x1 & x16 Extender Cables, Mining Chassis & GPU Dummy Plugs on: June 18, 2011, 01:03:02 AM
Doesn't an 890FXA-GD70 have 4 usable x16 double slots? I glanced at the photo at MSI to refresh my memory and it seems like it does unless the board is snug up against the side of a case in which case you couldn't fit that fourth in there, hence using the x16 extender I guess huh?

What PSU and what CPU are you using? I understand you believe power is not a concern but if your rails on not properly balanced you could be overloading one of them. PSU & CPU model?

Of course it would be ideal if you could slot that fourth card on board w/o an extender to test.
AMD Phenom II X2 555 CPU
ST1500 PSU

So I had to get creative since the last slot is not that well suited for a double-wide graphics card...
AN installed card not only covers the on mobo power/reset/OC buttons but also interferes with the case wiring...
Anyway, after shortening the pins on mobo and cutting the connectors in half, I got it in there... it a tight fit.

Everything works fine...

Conclusion:

1 - recieved a bad extender cable...
2 - the molex splitter does not draw the same power as the card would from the mobo.  and this probably causes issues I've observed...  I may be 100% wrong on this one, it's just a hunch... Someone else may be more knowledgeable to explain.

Thanks!

"Limit 10 per customer".  Do you think mining had anything to do with that?

All gone... that was quick!!! I did get one Smiley
4315  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: FOR SALE: PCIe x1 & x16 Extender Cables, Mining Chassis & GPU Dummy Plugs on: June 17, 2011, 11:53:40 PM
Have you tried all 4 cards simultaneously in x16 slots (on board) not using an extender? How much power do you have and what cards are you using? What CPU/RAM/Peripherals?

Have not tried that since I don't have enough room to place all 4 directly onboard.
XFX 5830
4GB ram
no peripherals installed.
power is not an issue. have over 850 Watts available on separate rails.

While at the time of this writing the BTC is trading at $19.51, I wouldn’t be surprised to see their value drop over the course of the day as this news spreads.

If the value drops as a result of this news that would suggest that a lot of speculators are idiots who didn't even do basic research on what they were investing in.

The weakness that a wallet.dat can be stolen by a hacker has been discussed ad nauseum, and consensus on effective countermeasures, such as keeping an offline savings wallet has been reached months ago.

All true...

maybe the thieves are unloading what they stole?  that would cause a spike down.  just don't know how big.

I'm sure you had 10 posts at some point as well.
4318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Close to US$500k stolen in first major Bitcoin theft on: June 17, 2011, 09:43:54 PM

http://thenextweb.com/industry/2011/06/15/close-to-us500k-stolen-in-first-major-bitcoin-theft/

In the first Bitcoin theft of its size, a user has lost 25,000 BTC — or nearly $487,749 at today’s market rates — to an unknown thief.

While the Bitcoin community has always been quick to point out that it’s harder to forge a Bitcoin than to forge a dollar, it’s quite easy to take someone else’s Bitcoins: all you have to do is gain access to their computer’s hard drive. Once you’re in, stealing Bitcoins is easier than taking a wallet in the real world, and there’s no recourse for getting them back.

That said, it is possible to verify the movement of funds to ensure complainants are telling the truth due to Bitcoin’s public nature — services such as BlockExplorer allow users to see every transaction that has ever occurred through the network. The receiving account in this case, for instance, can be seen here.

As a decentralized network with no authority and no identities attached to the addresses used to send and receive Bitcoins, once Bitcoins are stolen they’re as good as gone.

While at the time of this writing the BTC is trading at $19.51, I wouldn’t be surprised to see their value drop over the course of the day as this news spreads.
4319  Economy / Computer hardware / issue with adding a 4th 5830 with PCIe x16 extender on: June 17, 2011, 09:03:02 PM
- 890FXA-GD70 mobo. have plenty of power
- Windows7 x64. sdk2.4 video driver 11.5 or 11.6
- received the PCIe x16 extender today and attempted to use it.

The system is completely unstable.  BSOD (from video driver) or it simply freezes.

I don't even begin overclocking anything (not enough time to get that far before issues occur).  Stock settings.

if I take out the 4th card the system runs just fine... not using crossfire.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?  Have you experienced this too or have you heard about it?

Thanks!
