switch to phatk2.2 if you are not already.
This is the first I've heard of phatk 2.2, but I don't really keep up on the latest & greatest. Is it faster? yes. it's also better on execution of code where I've noticed a 2 degree temp drop. which ofcourse allowed me to increase OC

Some people simply find these forums less addictive than others (or have more willpower to resist the addiction lol). Also many "hero" members went on starting various bitcoin related ventures and could be rather busy.
I know what you mean... I just got involved with one such venture myself... we'll see where it leads...

Yeah, nowinstock.net is pretty good but it doesn't have 5830s in the watch list...yet....
LOL I had emailed them a while back asking to add 5830s... but no replies yet...

So, I put my 6970s back in today and it looks like they have the exact same restrictions under Linux. I was able to underclock mem 125 under core but anything past that reverts mem back to stock.
I have the same issue with all apps except atitraytools in windows. For some reason that application allows me to set really low clocks while others show low clocks but temps are 6-7 degrees higher so I know it's not sticking.
Unfortunately tray tools doesn't handle more than 2 GPUs very well so I couldn't get it to work with the 6990s. However, the fact that one tool works in windows leads me to believe there's got to be another tool out there that handles 3 or more GPUs...
you'd have to flash the BIOS. should work under linux fine. if you flash the bios and try to use under windows, the drivers will crash. I wish someone here could debug this and write a fixer app to trick the driver into thinking that the card was not flashed... this is beyond my ability...

on windows, amd gpu clock tool does not work?
To the best of my knowledge it doesn't... Does it work for you?

Is there an easy way to swap mounting brackets? Or is it like welded on there or something?
It's easy to swap if you have another one... Identical preferably

Yeah I'm thinking of RMA'ing mine too. I mean it works just fine and looks sexy as hell, but the mounting bracket is all kinds of bent up from improper packing.
Did you buy yours from NewEgg, or the other place (that threw in several misc. accessories for about $8 more in shipping) NewEgg. It came with the usual accessories and, for no extra charge, a post-modern sculpture made out of the mounting bracket on my card. RMA it now because if it dies 20 days from now, you will have a hard time convincing newegg that it was bent from shipping...

thanks
You do know I was joking, right?

so sorry bit of a noob question! What does resting the counters do for me?
gives them a breather from all the hard work...

If you have the thermals for it shoot for 1ghz clock 900mh/s on a single card would be epic
900 mh/s on a single card would force me to click buy though... One should easily get over 800 mh/s total for the purchase to make any sense at all. did you buy one?

Ok the 5970 seems to work fine. At stock clock 725MHz (300 memory) it's doing 320 MH/s. Time to turn up heat and see what this thing will do (ha famous last words!)
per GPU?

I just got mine and was a little shocked at how small the box was that it came in. At first I was like "there's no way this is a 5970, the box is way too small. They must have shipped me something else." So I was kind of panicking while opening the box! But sure enough it was a brand spankin new OEM HD 5970 shoehorned diagonally into the small cardboard box. Apparently it was fit so tight that the mounting bracket was bent on the top and bottom. No biggie since I can just bend it back, but it's something you might want to know about if you're thinking of getting one. It came with a CrossFire cable, DVI plug, and Mini Displayport adapter too. I'm a little disappointed in the packaging and now I'm a little scared to actually try it out!
don't be scared! try it, you bought it to use it afterall let us know how it performs. I'm waiting for mine to arrive in the next 2 days... i hope I will be able to dump my 2 6990s and actually end up ahead in terms of $s.

BIOS Flash works perfectly.
You just can't boot the cards in Windows - the ATI driver will call a bluescreen on purpose, halting the machine. Annoying.
When I get 6990's in, I flash them to 150mhz minimum RAM clock, and they tend to run anywhere from 915-950mhz at around 85C. Some cores as mentioned by another poster in this thread just are horrible, such as one that maxes out at 910Mhz @ a running temp of 98C. I'd say average is around 940mhz @ 89C - if you like pushing your gear that hard at least. There is a lot of variation on these, but it seems cards of later manufacture do better than the earlier ones.
I have not seen a difference clocking RAM higher than 150Mhz, but others report otherwise. YMMV.
You absolutely *must* underclock RAM on these to get any form of thermal room for stable overclocks, I've found. Also it saves about 50-75w per card. I had issues keeping them stable prior to flashing them.
fwiw I expect 840Mhash out of each card, and tend to average 850ish it seems these days.

so you are running something like 915-950/150 under linux?

Addressed to me, from PowerColor tech support:
"I did a bit of research and was able to confirm what XXXXX mentioned earlier (see my prior quote from powercolor tech support). They don't allow this because it'll compromise the card's performance too much. In your situation it's practically irrelevant because you don't need bandwidth, all you need is GPU power, but unfortunately it's not something that can be done. In my experience with other cards, lowering (or increasing for that matter) memory clocks has a very small effect on overall card temperatures. That's the main premise behind the popular internet argument that memory module coolers are useless and do nothing to improve overclocking capabilities. So I apologize that you're not able to lower the memory clock speeds, but even if you could there would be no reason to expect any kind of drastic drop in temperature. Let me know if you have any other questions."

so, what's up with these cards? they are still in stock at several vendors. Did AMD just make a boatload of these?

picked up a couple. shows 20+ available.

Maybe the clipped grill?
I bet if it was sold as new-in-the-box canary would've made a killing. People devalue things weirdly.
that would be a really puzzling reason considering what miners put their cards through anyway. plus that clipped of piece can be easily replaced. I'm glad you guys had fun with this. It was pretty amusing to read posts against this... I will have something spectacular ready for bitcoin miners in not too distant future. all supportive people here will be first in line. so, stay tuned.
