3921  Economy / Gambling / Re: Xtreme HD5830 Sapphire raffle (CLOSED) 4 entries. winner to be announced. on: August 26, 2011, 08:07:43 PM
I don't think this should put raffles to an end.  maybe someone can run it more "actively" with modifications that make raffles more appealing...
i just didn't have enough time to promote and modify this raffle appropriately.
however, i had to keep my word, and i did.

I took the Accelero cooler off my 5970 because it's a crappy cooler which made the VRMs overheat, so I then put the stock cooler back on. Now the motherboard makes the "No VGA detected" series of beeps, so I put a 5850 in and connected the monitor to that so I could boot into Windows with the 5970 in the middle PCIE slot and the device manager won't detect the 5970. Yes, I did put thermal paste on all the right places on the 5970, on both the top and the bottom of the card. How could the card have died just by changing the cooler?

The 5970 fan still spins up loudly for about 2 seconds just after I do a cold boot, before going quiet again.

just bitcoin growing pains.
3925  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Sapphire Radeon 6990's in stock for $800 shipped on: August 26, 2011, 02:57:26 AM
Just noticed these while browsing eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapphire-Radeon-HD6990-4GB-DDR5-DVI-4x-Mini-/290603036229?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item43a94a6e45#ht_6452wt_922

If you use your eBay Bucks discount (free money after 45 days) it comes out to about $800 shipped even.

Not too bad considering everyone else is selling used ones for more than that on eBay.

Here's their response to a question:

Dear customer,

This video card is out of stock now, we are planning to end this listing. Sorry for the inconveniences.

Best regards,
Young

3926  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: HD5970 new in stock newegg 499$ ! on: August 26, 2011, 02:13:08 AM
Has anybody received a tracking number yet?  I think my F5 key is about to wear out.
calm down!!!! i've never had an issue on newegg...
if it says shipped, it's picked, packed and waiting for UPS to pickup and scan the code in.
3927  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: HD5970 new in stock newegg 499$ ! on: August 26, 2011, 01:15:40 AM
No way would I buy that card with only a 30 day warranty.

I would.  my credit card extends any warranty by 1 yr.

touche! so you get 1 year and 30 days. That does help but I am definitely not clear on how american express,
for example, would treat an OEM vid card with a 30 day warranty. It is not a normal purchase I would be confident about.
You know.. the fine print and all.
not a problem... just save the receipt.  don't ask me why, they allready have the purchase record on the credit card.
i'm pretty sure they just have some kind of insurance policy for this.  the cost is passed on to us anyway (higher interest, other fees etc... etc...).
makes for a good marketing ploy since most people couldn't find that receipt...

Why the Hero members don't seem to respond to too many posts.

When I joined, I was eager to respond often... it was exciting...

recently, I've realized that few make it to that level and once you make it there, you simply lose all interest in the majority of stupidity that is posted here...

and you do not engage in nonsense because it's pointless, waste of time and useless.  stupidity has a way to shake itself out in the long run.

you shake your head and brush it off.  at some point you don't even bother shaking your head. you ignore almost all posts unless they involve Hero members...

could someone point me to where I can see code /pseudo/code for the calculation of a hash.  step by step would be awesome, but anything would be helpful too.
A hash of what?
Block, transaction?

block

3933  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA boards are here on: August 25, 2011, 06:27:57 PM
you might want to get those numbers corrected...

Sources for "those numbers":

http://www.gold.org/investment/why_how_and_where/faqs/
http://www.mineweb.net/mineweb/view/mineweb/en/page33?oid=19485&sn=Detail

Your turn, since you seem to claim you know better.

11% is consumed and/or lost.
then, your conversion is inaccurate and points to your fundamental lack of knowledge about gold.

any fool can google things and appear "knowledgable"

the issue with your math is that you didn't convert total gold into ounces per person correctly.

lets see if you understand your mistake and correct it...

3936  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA boards are here on: August 25, 2011, 03:51:59 PM
Gold is finite.

Yes. Like everything else, depending on the timescales.

Quote
there's not enough gold for everyone to have just 1 ounce.

Quote from: The Internet
At the end of 2009, it was estimated that all the gold ever mined totaled 165,000 tonnes

~6 000 000 000 oz means you're right but it's a rather close call.

However, when talking about price and whether you're in a bubble or not this is what matters:

Quote from: The Internet
The average gold mining and extraction costs were about US$317/oz in 2007

(Yes, I believe in there being such a thing as fundamentals in Bitcoin price also depending on current mining cost)

you might want to get those numbers corrected...
3937  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA boards are here on: August 25, 2011, 03:51:02 PM
Yes but imagine a stock market for the periodic table. You can trade in any stable element. Some people will sit all day long trading gold for rhodium or carbon for hydrogen, lead for nickle  or whatever takes their please.
At some points gold will be massively overpriced compared to the other elements and even finished products or land deed titles (which are also only bits of paper just like fiat money) Also consider the nature of matter with protons, neutrons and electrons and the wave theory of particles. Elements are at their very core just waves of energy and in the future it will be possible to gain any element either from the sun or production during (man made) nuclear fusion.

what is the definition of economics?  how finite are all these elements? how much are they wanted?

I agree about the future.  but in the mean time,  how do you store your earnings?

dollar's purchasing power has declined by about 95% on a recent time slice. (~100 yrs)

an ounce of gold got you a fine tailored suit in London 100 yrs ago, 200 yrs ago, 300 yrs ago  and it does the same today.

can I get that for $20 today?

If you want to peddle these instead of mining, may I remind that these are out of stock in Europe as well.
Except there the going price is 600-700€ or more per card. That comes to a minimum of $850 dollars.

Buy a card from Newegg and people in Europe will snatch it up in an instant if you sell it on eBay for 599€. You'll make a few hundred just by ordering stuff.

this carries way too much risk for my appetite.  i'm perfectly content with offsetting mining hardware costs slowly by selling in US only.

i've noticed a 2 degree temp drop using phatk2 with the 1.6 phoenix. Nice!

allowed me to increase the clock speed to a level that before wasnot stable. now it's stable a a little bit higher clock rate.

will try lowering mem some more based on other's feedback here.
