Very cool !

I didn't go with the block erupters (a lot of them), because the ROI on them is not good.

I just bought one for the hell of it, just to play with it. We will see how it works out.
442  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [3] countdown! on: June 15, 2013, 09:59:54 PM
Why are you all so butthurt? Stop complaining about them. You have no right to make 5000% ROI within 1 week like Batch 1. You just bought a product, it will be delivered some time, your ROI will still be good.

Obama, is that you?
443  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Off-Topic on: June 15, 2013, 12:21:17 AM
I'm mostly interested in just the empty DX modules. The case does look nice.

Are you planning on offering just the empty modules with mounting hardware and/or any cables for a price?

Is that a standard ATX power supply mounted there?

444  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: terrahash.com??? on: June 15, 2013, 12:12:53 AM
Considering the K16 design has NOT been finalized by Bkkcoins, I think Terrahash accepting pre-orders is premature at best.

Other threads that have offered assembly with people's own chips have not (as of this writing), accepted money from anybody for assembly services.

I'm not asking anybody for pre-orders, and I have more posts than Terrahash and joined the forum slightly before they did ( I think).

Maybe I'll start an ASIC assembly company and ask people for money too. Of course, I'll have to make a slicker website... Grin
445  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: This is why some Avalon units were shipped damagged on: June 15, 2013, 12:05:16 AM

I doubt that one can generalize too much from that video, except to say that if he was being paid enough to care, then he probably would have.

Hopefully those weren't Avalon sample chips...

I will not support any entity that uses the Klondike design without officially supporting Bkkcoins and the community.

Bkkcoins is da man !
448  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: New Mac Pro mining speculation on: June 14, 2013, 03:17:48 AM
It will be another Cube boondoggle.

Honestly, I was a diehard Mac fan for a long time, but they lost me when they went with the all-in-one designs for the iMacs and the super-expensive Mac pro.

They simply do not have a product for the average power-user who is not a "pro" level video editor, graphic designer jockey. Nothing against those people, but I like to tinker with my machines.

The all-in-one's are basically closed machines, while the pro machine is way too expensive.

Now, they have alienated the power creative users who absolutely HAVE to stick cards into their computers to handle serious audio (96khz sample rates), real time video editing, and possibly others as well.

First they killed off the Xserve, and now they're killing off the big chassis towers. I don't use their stinking phones either. Way overpriced junk.
449  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Powercolor 7950's, engine/memclock jumping around? on: June 14, 2013, 12:39:45 AM
I had to send 2 out of 3 of those Powercolors back. Only one of them works as it should (knock on wood).

They did exactly what you described. The reason for that constant whine and throttleback is that they overheated on and off because the fan basically would not go over about 3300 rpms.

So, they would sit there whine for a while, overheat and then throttle back.

They also do that if you have turbo enabled. I used SapphireX but it does not help if the fan (or fan controller) goes out.

Well, live and learn. The one that works will do 1125 mhz gpu clock easy, so the benefit to them seems to be that they are unlocked.

Not a good fan design IMHO.

450  Economy / Economics / Re: Stock bitcoins and stop selling. Let price go above 200$ on: June 13, 2013, 04:29:53 PM
The problem with the OP's approach is that is not a what a free market is.

At the moment when you introduce an artificial rule into a market which prevents true price discovery, even if only for a short time (say 1-3 months), that has the effect of destabilizing the market, potentially for a long time afterwards.

Artificially blown bubbles take a long time to work themselves out, resulting in imbalanced markets for quite a while afterwards.

Even if the intention is "done with the best of intentions", that does not matter, because once you've perturbed the market, it is no longer in it's original equilibrium, with balanced inputs and outputs.

It is akin to the chaos theory analogy. If a butterfly flaps its wings in China, you get a tornado in New York (on Wall St.).

This is the problem with the Federal Reserve, the Japanese Stock market, the housing market and a whole lot of other places today. If enough people or agencies try to "fix the market", all they end up doing is distorting and causing more imbalance in the market. This is what the Central Planning Committees in the Soviet Union tried to do, and they failed miserably at it.

The best way to fix an economy is to let people make their own decisions about what to buy and when, and stop trying to prop up asset bubbles blow up by ignorant idiots who do not want to suffer the consequences of their actions.

The central banks around the world are simply propping up their friends and cronies. Nothing more. By making a statement to hold on to your coins, you are, in effect, no better than any stupid bank or central office who now holds a lot of overpriced real estate on their books and refuses to sell it at almost any price that does not record a profit. Why? Because they cannot book any loss, as they have no reserves.

Artificial orders to "stop selling" have not helped the Italian stock markets any. They go on for a few days or weeks, and then true price discovery takes place. It simply does not work.

452  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Address with Avalon bulk chip payments now tops $8 million... on: June 07, 2013, 03:24:34 PM
somebody called and woke me up in the middle of the night for this, so I'll keep it short.

4. this forum is a giant waste of time, get back to coding, go outside, hug your mother, do something,

lastly, food for though:

who says we control that address in the first place?  Wink

Somebody woke his ass up in the middle of the night for this?

I hope you guys are proud of that. The guy has a life !

#4 is spot on. Stop watching the calendar, get away from the computer, and do something else for a few days. Go camping, unplug, go have a drink, whatever.

The chips will get here when they get here.  You can't affect it by posting on the forums. Just because you paid XX BTC does not mean you set the timetable.

And yes, I have quite a few BTC and $$ invested (probably more than you might think), so it's not like I don't have skin in the game.

Relax.

453  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 2,610 remaining on: June 07, 2013, 03:04:47 PM
You didn't look a this part.

Testing is TBD as to the price.

Step 1: buy chips @ 0.086 each (in units of 16 for K16)

Step 2: Pick assembly option when you get the e-mail to do so.

Step 3: Send in BTC for option picked in Step 2. Presumably pay for shipping of units at that time, if you want your units. Otherwise, pick hosting option.

Step 4: Sit back and enjoy the hashing.

Step 5: Thank Steamboat for making this process as painless as possible.

      Chips available: 2,610

      Pricing

      • Chips:
Avalon ASIC chips may be ordered for BTC0.086. This fee is due immediately upon order placement.
      • Assembly:
The total price for assembly is $95. This includes $35 for the PCB and board related components, and $60 for assembly, to be paid in BTC.
      • Assembly and DIY Kit:
The DIY kit and fully assembled PCB are $123.5, to be paid in BTC.
      • Fully Assembled Unit:
The fully assembled unit, including all necessary hardware, is $133.5, to be paid in BTC.
      • Hosting:
Hosting fees are tentatively set at 8% of miner revenue production, plus the cost of electricity. A setup fee may be unavoidable, due to the sizable infrastructure costs associated.
      • Testing:
        Testing fees to be released.

      * Assembly, Assembly and DIY Kit, and Fully Assembled Unit prices do not include the price of Avalon ASIC chips, and are not due at the time of chip purchase.

      *Prices do not include shipping.

      *Power supply not included.

*The prices above, not including the ASIC chips, are tentative and subject to change pending finalization of all parts required. This includes Testing and Hosting.  Each item whose price has not been finalized includes an increased margin reflecting this uncertainty, and may be reduced.

*Any USD fees incurred from receipt of ASIC chips from Avalon will be calculated upon arrival and distributed evenly based on the amount of chips purchased per person, payable in BTC prior to shipping to final destination. These include but are not limited to import tax, customs duties, and merchandise processing fees associated with receipt of shipment from Avalon. Depending on the HS code Avalon uses in shipping, the estimated total is $404.82.

As an interim solution, I would split your rigs in 2 clusters and make sure you run one cluster from a different fuse.

I'm planning on taking over the spare guest room (different fuse).

I've already taken over the office. Muhahahaha !

My wife complains that "It's a different microclimate" in there.

      Duh ! There's 4 graphics cards hashing !

Does this price reflect per 16 chip unit?  Or per any amount of chipped unit?

You have to have your own chips or have participated in one of the group buys on this thread. That price is only for assembly with YOUR chips.

On another note Steamboat, I'm assuming that the dollar amount for the assembly (whichever one) service will be based on the Mt. Gox price for the day we send you the BTC?

Or as the time gets closer are you going to just call it 1BTC or 1.1 BTC (or whatever)?

Most every Jalapeno order through July 3 went out today. I can't say every order, because stuff happens. It is a lot more fun to ship than not.

And like the Jalapenos, I will post when the other products start shipping. If I don't mention them--they aren't shipping.

I think we fixed the bug that made your orders disappear when they went to production.

Thank you for the kind words; all others I ignore.
      https://forums.butterflylabs.com/blogs/

Just to clarify, that's orders thru June of 2012.

Which means orders through September of 2012 should ship sometime around March of 2014.

Yep, perfectly reasonable shipping schedule.   Roll Eyes

458  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Are GPUs still relevant and for how long on: June 05, 2013, 02:51:18 PM
GPUs for Bitcoin mining will still make BTC, but at current prices, will stop being profitable by about 22 million difficulty.

This depends on your power cost as well. At 15 cents a Kwh, they stop being profitable closer to 19 million difficulty. If you have cheap power, you could probably extend that to 22 million, roughly.

When they stop returning significantly over power cost is a question that each individual miner has to answer for themselves.

You can also mine other scriptcoins, not just BTC. Most of the BTC mining will probably be going over to ASICs in 6 months tops.

Not that I'm advocating for BFL but..

Lots of rich people do exactly that, basically give money to themselves, but a separate tax entity. All of which is perfectly legal.

Bill Gates created the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, which he and his wife controlled, and then donated Micro$oft money to it. Essentially, he donated the money to himself, so he still has a say in where the money goes.

Did you really thing Bill Gates was going to give money to anybody but himself?

So did Guggenheim, Carnegie and many others.

It's standard operating procedure in corporate America. It's always a shady, but perfectly legal.

Whose money was donated? Investors or BFL's?

Probably money that was mined with prototype equipment funded by preorders, which have not shipped yet.

      Yeah, it sucks.
