4541  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Check list before depositing in any crypto casino. on: April 24, 2020, 02:23:16 PM
I would recommend to stay away from all online Casinos, the houese (owner of the Casino) always wins.
I made a topic related to this in the gambling discussion board a couple of days ago - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5242329.msg54268710#msg54268710

While, you are right to an extent, winning in gambling is still very much possible. The casinos and gambling platforms have a predetermined edge over the players and this would eventually be evident if one plays for a long time. But in a couple of games it's very possible to win and make profits.
You should also verify that the game you're betting on conforms to provable fairness before patronizing them.
4542  Other / Meta / Re: Why not spoiler tag? on: April 24, 2020, 01:59:23 PM
I personally don't see the use of spoiler tags being implemented in the forum. Except the image poster would include a description of the image, it would be a puzzle deciding which images to view and which not to?
It's sort of like ignoring every user and then allowing readers to choose who's content to view.

An alternative feature could be allowing users to toggle images on and off, i.e chose to allow images show on their account or not. This would not come with any risk of clicking malicious links.
4543  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA : Complete Domestic Competitions! on: April 24, 2020, 08:59:35 AM
Playing with many spectators should be ok... nothing prevents them (spectators) from practicing social distancing (and have their protection gears on) to  prevent the  crowd situations.
No, it will not be OK. Spacing out tge fans would leave so many empty seats inbetween, limiting the number of tickets that can be sold. Plus the virus can be transmitted through contaminated surfaces, so rails, seats and areas that are regularly touched could lead to the spread of the virus. Protective gear does little as it can be spread through cross contamination.

I wonder if the players will play with masks and other protection gears. Can they even avoid body contacts in such competitive sporting events?
Playing with face masks is almost impossible, it would greatly affect the players breathing. And it's also impossible to avoid body contacts in such a short as football.
4544  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies and Problems on: April 24, 2020, 08:23:26 AM
It could be that forum users think of higher ranking users as already proven as good posters so they give Merits. As for newbie accounts they probably have to try a little bit harder to earn their first Merit.
In most situations, i think the reverse applies. Higher ranking users are expected to have more knowledge on certain cryptocurrency topics (this is not always the case, but mostly is), and so they are judged using a much higher bench mark than newbie accounts. New members to the forum can be merited for showing genuine curiosity and willingness to learn. The fact that there are lots of newbies who spam the forum makes it a lot easier as it is relatively easy to spot the good posters.

To rank up, one has to put in the effort, this is an online forum and you are judged by the content you put out. Be constructive, do thorough research and be willing to learn.
4545  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is the US Stimulus check going to raise the price for bitcoin? on: April 23, 2020, 05:58:17 PM
It'll be very interesting indeed to see where bitcoin is, say, a year from now when presumably the outbreak will have blown over and things have gotten back to a semblance of normal.
It will indeed. I think it would be heavily dependent on how Bitcoin acts during these crisis period (however long it lasts). If it's price holds out over time or increases, people would be looking to get into it when all this is over and during a period where a couple of nations would likely be experiencing inflation and possibly recession.
But if the market takes a hard hit in the coming months, it would change the general sentiments towards it.

As regards the OP, if the stimulus checks actually does cause a spike in the price, would it be enough to sustain a rally, considering that not every nation received stimulus packages and amount of interested investors would be relatively reduces globally.
4546  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: April 23, 2020, 09:59:17 AM
I’m not sure how they’re pulling this off but the league is all set to resume on May 9th, and if they’re successful in finishing their season then other leagues too will follow their model.
I don't think any other league would hurry to resume as well, simply cause they did so in Germany. Countries handled the virus outbreak differently and this would reflect in how quickly they can begin to see improvements.
This was one of the reasons the UCL season was cancelled, as it involves clubs from different regions playing against each other, further increasing the chances of the virus spreading.
4547  Other / Meta / Re: Can we trust user that spread false and dangerous news on COVID19? on: April 23, 2020, 09:36:38 AM
If you want to discuss trustworthiness of other users, Reputation is the most appropriate board in my opinion.
To the question, if someone is spreading falsehood on a very salient issue, whether ignorantly or deliberately, I would be less inclined to trust such person.
I wonder, can we trust these people who continually spread false and dangerous news by rejecting any logical explanation?
Also if someone is being illogical and obstinate in an argument, I would hardly regard the person's opinion going forward. This does not imply whether they may not not be honest in a trade, but it's a red flag (figuratively speaking) in my opinion.
4548  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why people run away from trading!!! on: April 22, 2020, 09:12:19 AM
This is an excerpt from a thread I made sometime back on tips for newbies to trading which is still relevant;
1) Read and research

- Practice

- Start small

- Be patient

- Explore every option
Having a strong foundation (knowledge wise mostly) is important for a trader which wants to last for a long time. They avoid some basic mistakes which could hinder their development.
Before you go into trading or any financial venture, read and research.
4549  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to know is someone real and trusted for Bitcoin trading? on: April 22, 2020, 08:51:32 AM
<snip>
This was a good idea, up until the 'sending little amount' part. Users should always verify any individual they plan on entering into trades with, this includes, but is not limited to; checking their previous trade history, do not simply follow their trust ratings, but use it as a pointer to investigate their trustworthiness, also ensure they are the true owners of the identity you are entering a trade with, and always apply caution.

If you are not sure about an exchange do not enter into it or use a trusted escrow.
4550  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Beginner's guide to House Edge and RTP on: April 22, 2020, 06:56:56 AM
Do you have reference for this OP? Or it is all based on your acquired knowledge?

There are quite a number of articles and videos discussing it, I combined the knowledge I've gotten from different sources and chose to make it as basic as possible, so it'll be much easier to understand.
It has also been discussed in parts on the forum, but I couldn't find a comprehensive topic on it, why I chose to create one.
4551  Economy / Gambling discussion / Beginner's guide to House Edge and RTP on: April 21, 2020, 11:56:01 AM
Most gamblers here will be familiar with the terms in the title, but beginner's may be yet to grab the concept of house edge and Return to Player.

I've been taking more of an interest in gambling and how it works. As someone who is new to gambling, there is a large variety of games available to play and each offers different RoI (Return on Investment). However, it's important to understand how each game works and weigh your chances of winning, this would help you properly manage your gambling activity and minimize losses.

Each gambler wants to get profits off their wager and so also do the gambling platform (online or in house). So while the gambler looks for the best strategy to win, the house sets the best algorithm to ensure that they stay profitable while allowing enough winnings to keep gamblers coming back. This is done through the house edge (or percentage)

What is House Edge?

This can be said to be the edge the gambling platform has over the players, it entails that even though players would win in the short run the house would make more profit in the long run. The house edge is the statistical advantage the house has over the players to ensure profitability.

How is it calculated?

The house edge is calculated by finding the product of the the probability of winning and the total pay out.
Let's use a dice as an example; a standard dice is in the shape of a cube with 6 sides each having different number of dots, from 1 to 6. If a player bets that on a roll of the dice it would land with the number 2 topside and wagers $1 to win $4 (+their deposit = $5). The probability of winning is 1/6 or 0.1666, and the total winning is $5. So the house edge is calculated by multiplying the probability by the payout and then subtracting it from 100% = 1/6 × $5 = 0.8333 or 83.33%; this is the return to player percentage, i.e the possibility of the player winning.

The house edge is calculated by subtracting it from 100%.
So an RTP of 83.33% would give a house edge of 16.67% of the wager. So even with a couple of winnings by players, the house has a predictable advantage in the long run.

Another example would be a flip of a coin. The probability of landing a head is 1/2 or 0.5. If the house pays $0.80 on each successful bet of $1, that means a total payout of $1.80 (the profit + the wager amount)
The RTP would be equal to the probability multiplied by the payout = 1/2 × $1.80 = 0.9. Giving an RTP of 90% and a house edge of 10%.

So the house edge can be said to be the reverse of the RTP.
Another notable term when discussing fairness in gambling would be the Hit frequency:
Hit frequency is an algorithm used by gambling houses to ensure profitability. It is the number of times or the frequency at which a gambling machine would give a winning combination. So if it gives a winning combination 20 times on each hundred trials then it has a hit frequency of 20%. It's worthy to note that machine games which has a lower hit frequency offers a lower winning potential but usually gives a higher payout (jackpot) than those with a higher hit frequency which offers a higher winning potential but gives a lower payout.

Also note that gambling houses do not have arbitrary power to set this percentages, it has to within the accepted range in their location to ensure fairness.
4552  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: April 20, 2020, 06:30:34 PM
<snip>
1. If the conditions keep improving up until then, the league would want to maximize that and resume a fresh season with a short interval in-between.
I think it's also dependent on what's going on in other countries, the UCL is the elite competition and all clubs would want that restarted as soon as possible.

2. Not very soon imo. Large public gatherings would likely only be possible when; a vaccine is create or when the pandemic is completely quelled in that nation.
4553  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Italian League Prediction Thread (Serie A) on: April 20, 2020, 06:21:55 PM
How could they make a statement about the lockdown at this stage? I am talking about the government here not the league.
Resuming the league does not entail removing the lockdown, matches can be played behind closed doors and minimal involvement i.e limited camera people, coaching crew, stewards etc, and also no unnecessary contact between them.
At this point, all we have is speculation, and no concrete decision has been arrived at yet, the economy needs to be restarted slowly to cushion the effect of the lockdown, but safety of the citizens have to be prioritized. It's a tough decision.
4554  Other / Off-topic / Re: [POLL] Which browser do you use for bitcointalk? on: April 20, 2020, 03:35:08 PM
I combine a couple of the browsers on the list, but mostly I use Firefox when logging in. Chrome would come next. I Have heard so much about TOR but I'm yet to try it out, maybe due to the fact that I mostly use a slow internet connection and would be a difficult managing on it (from the complaints I get).
You could use the Orbot app which routes all your mobile data through Tor, and then use a non-spyware browser like Firefox or DuckDuckGo.
Maybe this would solve that problem. Would surely try it out.
4555  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Keep contact details private on: April 19, 2020, 06:27:56 AM
If I'm not going to make my telegram public, how will I receive the PM from unknown people who is looking for the service which I'm offering?
I included it in the OP. You can use the forum PM option as a means on contact from potential clients and if the conversation needs to be moved to another platform, you can then give then your other contact details, this way only a few individuals would have access to it and that is after they have already had contact with them, and can choose to trust them with the information.

Even if there is the possibility of scammers contacting you and posing as clients, I think it poses less risk than when the information is out in the public.

Afaik, telegram user name can't be clone unless if they will add a similar letter(s) and looks like your user name.
That's true, I just slightly updated the OP. I was lost for a better word to fit the description.

I dont think users who have a lot of experience on forums will easily trust someone here.
Those contacting someone for a job or service may not likely have lots of experience.
4556  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2019/20 on: April 19, 2020, 06:22:45 AM
Does running with a mask like that do not interfere with the breathing of the players, if indeed it is official?
It surely will, especially if it's a fully protective masks with no breathing holes.
As said above it could probably be intended to be a joke, but if football is to resume early, the technical crew, players in the bench and other non-playing staff my need to put on adequate protection, and customized ones to the teams design could be used
4557  Other / Beginners & Help / Keep contact details private on: April 18, 2020, 06:35:12 PM
This is a suggestion to forum members on how to protect their identity, especially if you offer specific services through your account.
There have been multiple cases of accounts getting hacked or cloned (fake one with similarly looking alphabets) and scammers using that as a means to rip people off using the (online) identity of a trusted member.

Keeping your contact details private: If you offer services on the forum, you'll regular be in contact with potential clients which could go beyond the forum. Do not make your contact details; such as telegram or discord username, email, or any other social media accounts, public on your announcement posts or your profile. Rather use the forum PM option as your primary means of communication and if clients reach out to you, then you can make them privy to your other details (if necessary).

This way you prevent multiple clones of your accounts and you also protect it from hack attempts.

Also if you're establishing contact with forum member on some other platform, always ask for prove of identity before entering any trade. This could be through a signed message or a PM confirmation through the individuals forum account.

I Request Help and Advice.
Other forum members are here to help you along the way on your cryptocurrency journey, but first, you need to search. Search around the forum, understand how it works, look up Bitcoin (and any other currency that might interest you). This way you'll get to know the basic stuffs and then decide what you want to do with that information.

Getting started can be confusing as there is lots of information to digest. So try and get a learning plan, follow sticky threads, first in this board (beginner's and help), and very importantly, be conscious of scams, do not dabble into any investment venture until you fully understand it.
4559  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: April 17, 2020, 03:21:31 PM
^  I'd give Mou three transfer windows (summer, winter, summer) then it's make or break.  I mean it doesn't have to be the league trophy but they should be in the running for it at least.

I agree, and definitely they should also be in the running for any of the available league cups.
Pochettino made incredible progress, but his major undoing was failing to win a single title at Spurs.
Clubs naturally would prioritize; good football and consistency, but the fans need something to cheer about from time to time.
Mourinho knows how to win titles, but can he give Tottenham the consistency to remain a top four team? And would a trophy or two be enough to save his job should he fall below their current standard in the league?
4560  Other / Meta / Re: Time to cut the altcoins sections loose. on: April 17, 2020, 03:08:54 PM
Well the forum accepts payments in an altcoin (grin) so it is recognized to an extent. Also, quite a number of members here hold a couple of altcoins in their portfolio and would need a place to discuss issues regarding it.
Admittedly, the section has a lot of low quality posts and spam mega threads, so also does the Bitcoin discussion board. Removing a whole section would not put an end to spam, rather it would increase the workload on moderators of other boards as spammers transition to those sections.
