561  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to win an easy bitcoin on: June 19, 2011, 07:47:02 AM
I'd just like to hear from 'Ouaigr0' and see how he was able to win so soon after the project launch. The 2nd round is obviously going much much slower.

(I was the 22th by the way)
562  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MT GOX... Where are my coins? on: June 19, 2011, 03:18:26 AM
The good thing is that as long as there is no transaction in the block chain that shows the coins going out, you will still have them on the old address.

Restart, and run bitcoin.exe -rescan
Please explain. I am running windows XP.

quit bitcoin (make sure it's really quit, no coin in the system tray)
click start
click run
type cmd and hit enter
type cd "\program files\bitcoin" and hit enter
type bitcoin -rescan and hit enter

Drop by #bitcoin-aus sometime.

If it's not obvious, that's an IRC channel you can get to via Freenode:

For some strange reason all of these guys are SUPER slow to process exchanges & orders.. ridiculous since the whole idea is interweb based, even slower than a government run institution.

let me tell you that mtgox was always fast for all my btc transactions

Me too, but SUPER slow for LR, which in my opinion should also be easily automated.
565  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Australia - BTC/AUD trading options on: June 19, 2011, 02:34:51 AM
You could try putting your postcode in here and emailing someone...

http://btcnearme.com

Or you could try this site, but it's pretty expensive for fees:

http://bitpiggy.com

You could also post a message in the Marketplace area, stating how much BTC you want to buy/sell for AUD.

You could deposit to Mt Gox via Technocash at a post office... more info at their site http://mtgox.com

The day I upgrade from 0.3.20 will be the day we stop seeing threads like this... never?
567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Jokes on: June 18, 2011, 10:40:41 PM
According to Southpark, the reason Bitcoin isn't funny is because it hasn't been 23 years yet.
568  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Jokes on: June 18, 2011, 09:26:00 AM
No funny joke yet.

PS: My girlfriend actually likes bitcoin, but her father was upset that I introduced her to it. Fortunately her father is a mathematician, so it took me only three lines of email to get him totally fascinated about bitcoin.

The 3 lines:

I'm a huge pervert and love doing crazy things with women.

I've seen your daughter naked and I like it.

Bitcoin is a new crypto-currency that is starting to take up so much of my time and thoughts that if it really takes off then I'll have no time to focus on anything else.

I wanted to open up some discussion on determining the true value of a bitcoin.

http://mtgox.com

Well, the whole point of this is to determine where the future price will be at. You can just take a stab in the dark and go on what you just 'think' will happen or you can try to use some quantafiable method of determining where price is likely to go. But thanks for your belittling response.

No problem.

If you need any further belittling responses, please let me know.

If the difficulty went that high without much higher prices first the price of bitcoin would go to $0. Because the only way that much computing power would be set to mining at current prices is if the owner of the computing power wanted to kill bitcoin. With enough computing power to drive difficulty that high they would succeed.

That was just an example figure, meant to show 'an increase in difficulty'. I could have chosen 877221.666667 (1 more than the current difficulty), but my example would have lacked impact, while still retaining it's point.
571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: i just made a BIG mistake on: June 18, 2011, 01:41:31 AM
I never delete any wallet, not even empty/test wallets.

+1

  • 'Empty' wallets might contain value lower than 0.01, eg 0.00154842 btc.
  • 'Empty' wallets might contain value much higher than 0.01, if they are somehow corrupt and not reporting the correct balance.
  • 'Empty' wallets might contain an address than has been made public (i.e. a donation address) that might receive unexpected funds one day.
  • It's easy to move all your unused wallets to an encrypted archive instead. Mark them by the date they were archived or something.
572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A webpage that keeps track of all the lost bitcoins on: June 18, 2011, 01:28:02 AM
Aren't we able to lookup transactions from anyone with the date? If so, why not create a system where it shows top inactive bitcoin accounts with large amount? And of course some other way to average in all the smaller amounts of bitcoins based on inactivity.

Inactivity might just mean it's someone's long-term savings.
573  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: goons are crashing the market again on: June 18, 2011, 01:26:13 AM
Directly no.  Indirectly through its psychological effect on those mining coins yes.

I don't get how the price is going down after a difficulty increase... anyone able to englighten me (and others)?
The price of bitcoins is not determined by the difficulty of mining them.

This argument comes up so many times on this forum.

Imagine if the difficulty rose tomorrow to 10,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Do you think miners will want to sell you any coins for today's low low prices?

Or do you think they'll hold out for higher prices since the prospect of them mining more tomorrow is now diminished?
574  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Allow me to post please + How would you convince your wife? on: June 17, 2011, 03:38:23 PM
Can't help sorry... investing in bitcoin was my wife's idea.
575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A webpage that keeps track of all the lost bitcoins on: June 17, 2011, 03:34:49 PM
If a lot of bitcoins are lost, it increases the value of the other bitcoins.

But problem is just evidence.

Is there any way to confirm it?

Nope. Saying "I don't have such-and-such private key anymore" is like saying "I don't have example.txt on my drive anymore". How is anyone going to prove that they don't have a particular piece of data?

I sell my Bitcoins when they get down to $10-$13 because I might lose everything.

I buy Bitcoins when they are at $25, because then they are doing well.

Buy high, sell low.

I sit on my stash and wait patiently for $100 per coin. Yes they may go much higher, but I probably won't have the nerves for that.
578  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mainstreaming BTC on: June 17, 2011, 03:18:04 PM
Of course porn will be part of it.

I've got these 2 sites live, but I'm just waiting on a couple of content providers before fully promoting them again:

http://bitcoinboyfriend.com

There has to be a reason for price to move

Weekend vs weekdays.
580  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet on: June 17, 2011, 05:33:43 AM
This is all very complicated,

i have a few btc, not overly worried about getting them stolen
i was hoping there would be a very simple way to "put my wallet on a usb"

can't i simply cut and past wallet.dat on a usb key?

Sure, if you're not overly worried about getting them stolen.
