581  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Opposition to ObamaCare now 2:1 … among the uninsured on: February 03, 2014, 06:25:21 PM

Your tax penalty (shared responsibility fee) for not having insurance is paid on your taxes at the end of the year. If your taxable income is below 133% of the FPL you are exempt from this tax.
<snip>

Why not just pay the small amount it takes to get insurance? It will be cheaper to have it, than to pay the tax. You pay a small % and the government pays the rest..

You answered your own question right out of the gate.  The vast majority of the uninsured are uninsured because they don't have reliable employment to produce such a taxable income.  That is not to say that most of these people don't actually have an income, just not a taxable one.  It's actually not very difficult for a young, single person to make a good living if they don't have a problem with the kind of work that doesn't tend to produce a W2 form with your own name on it.  That kind of work also makes it easier to qualify for government aid at the same time, but to a 20 something hustler with no known medical issues, paying any kind of premium has always been a non-starter.  That's why they didn't bother before.

You're just making shit up, the vast majority?? I don't have insurance and way above the FPL level.. No one was talking about the FPL level.. What you quoted was talking about the fee that comes along when you don't get insurance.. not being to poor to get it and not getting a fine.

KHN says, presumably without irony, that the reason for the sudden shift is unclear:

Uninsured Americans — the people that the Affordable Care Act was designed to most aid — are increasingly critical of the law as its key provisions kick in, a poll released Thursday finds.

This month’s tracking poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 47 percent of the uninsured said they hold unfavorable views of the law while 24 percent said they liked it. These negative views have increased since December, when 43 percent of the uninsured panned the law and 36 percent liked it. (KHN is an editorially independent program of the Foundation.)

The poll did not pinpoint clear reasons for this drop, which comes in the first month that people could start using insurance purchased through the online marketplaces that are at the heart of the law. It did point out that more than half of people without insurance said the law hasn’t made a difference to them or their families. In addition, the pollsters noted that almost half of people without coverage were unaware the law includes subsidies to offset premium costs for people of low and moderate incomes.

Among all Americans, the sentiment was also negative, with 50 percent holding unfavorable views of the law and 34 percent supporting it. Views on the law have not been even since the end of 2012. Despite this, just 38 percent of the public wants the law to be repealed.

http://capsules.kaiserhealthnews.org/index.php/2014/01/health-law-is-a-tough-sell-to-uninsured

This tells me 47% didn't even look it up, a household of 7 making a total of $50,000 a year will pay $900 a year total for a silver insurance plan.
But if you don't insure, and just pay the penalty, there's no deductible.

Your tax penalty (shared responsibility fee) for not having insurance is paid on your taxes at the end of the year. If your taxable income is below 133% of the FPL you are exempt from this tax.

2014 = $95 per person per year or 1% of your Income
2015 = $325 per person per year or 2% of your Income
2016 = $695 per person per year or 2.5% of your Income
2017 = Tax Penalty will increase by the rate of inflation going forward, or 2.5% of your Income

• The penalty is based on modified adjusted gross income.

• The total penalty for the taxable year cannot exceed the national average of the annual premiums of a bronze-level health insurance plan offered through the health insurance marketplaces.

• The maximum penalty per family is capped at no more than 300% of the minimum penalty (e.g. $695 x 300% = $2,085)

Why not just pay the small amount it takes to get insurance? It will be cheaper to have it, than to pay the tax. You pay a small % and the government pays the rest..

So lets say they are paying 2% on plastic charges.... 1% for bitpay.  So a 1% saving on every transaction.  That's  $5,000 in added revenue/savings just by accepting bitcoin.  That's pretty cool.

Lets say 1%?? Why should we say such things?

https://bitpay.com/pricing

I went with 1% because thats their basic price package.  Its just a guess since we dont know what package they go with.  It could certainly be less.  Point was they are saving quite a bit of money simply by accepting bitcoin  Wink

At 2 billion in sales, probably more like 0.1%, card merchants will fight for your business and give you lower rates, and at 2 million in profit with 0.1% I can see it being around there. The person who sells the credit card service makes a % can be from 10% and above of all profit made from the transaction % so at 0.1% the person who signed them up will make $200,000 yearly just from the account.

If you take 1.0 BTC when its worth $80, is it proper to pay back 1.0btc, or $80?

i'm not trying to slag OP at all.  i'm just wondering what happens when someone steals bitcoin, and then pays it back at a later date.

I did that in the past, i scammed 2 btcs, but someone was selling btcs for usd and i bought two of them for 220 usd, but scammed him, techically i stealed 220 usd not 2 btcs.. so in this case the correct would be to return the 220 usd not the btcs right?

Bcause i did that in the past, and i thing i did the correct thing, because he wouldt have held the btcs i stealed from him, he wanted to sell them, if i havent bought them, someone else have bought.

No, you stole 2 BTC, you owe 2 btc... BTC isn't USD.. If I steal your $50,000 car and wait for its value to drop to $2000 and buy you another.. did I make up for it?
586  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you were Satoshi, would you be scared your identity eventually be found out? on: February 03, 2014, 04:16:25 AM
I'm sure he/she didn't just design and create bitcoin, then leave it.. He probably just made a second btctalk account..

And has anyone ever thought maybe he broke the law unrelated to bitcoin and is serving some time in prison I'm sure he will be glad to find out his wallets are stocked with a retirement when he gets out if so. Smiley

Hmm a few thousand miners... vs a few billion computers, phones, tablets, xboxes, and tvs sold every year.

Yes, tax them.
588  Other / Meta / Re: Donate bitcointalk advertisement money to Bitcoin client development on: January 18, 2014, 03:50:24 AM
From what I understand, the ad revenue from Bitcointalk is currently going to a fund to upgrade the forum software. I think it would be much better spent donating to those developing new Bitcoin clients. Bitcoin has some great projects happening now, but the Satoshi client only has one full-time paid programmer. I think having several paid programmers working on the reference client would be more fitting for a network the size of Bitcoin's.

I'm guessing the ad revenue minus the 25% donated to the moderators and the portion spent on hosting expenses would be enough or close to enough to hire one additional full-time developer, which could make a big difference.

I don't think giving a donation from the forums to the developers if they need it is a bad idea, but I don't think constantly paying the developers would be a good idea. The forums are a place to get together and talk about Bitcoin, its an informal message board, not a hiring agency. The goal is not to centralize, if everything bitcoin starts revolving around the forums, rather than it just being a convient place to chat, problems could occur.

The forum money isn't being spent on anything related to the forums, look around, look at the old post that suggested the upgrade. It's being stored, and will be cashed out slowly by Theymos when the value is high enough, to buy him a nice castle.

There may have been bonuses sent out, but if memory serves correctly, there is edit: ~$9,000,000 in the forum accounts.

Would you mind providing TXIDs to where Theymos is taking BTC out of the forum's fund? (not to mention that Theymos doesn't actually hold most of the coins)

Also, Custom forum software was announced to have started development about a month ago, maybe more, it will take a while, but there will be new forum software. If we are lucky, that "~$9,000,000 in the forum accounts" will be a whole lot more by the time it needs to be spent.

I don't know what the big emphasis is on spending the forum's coins, why must all of the coins be spent? Had they all been spent last year, they would have had far less buying power. The longer the coins sit, the more buying power the forums has for upgrades. Why must it all be spent immediately if not sooner?

This is his "Treasurer" account. 5100 btc here alone.

Lets be honest with ourselves here, $9 million USD is way more than this site will ever need in our generation, and those to follow. When BTC become mainstream and widely accepted everywhere, these forums will no longer be needed. Who else is signed up to forums to discuss the USD, Euro, etc?

The longer the coins sit, the more they mature for Theymos..

What could happen is Theymos could hire a company, such as vistaprint, and use 1/9th of the funds to send a letter to 2 million of the richest homes in the world a letter about bitcoin. But that would lose him at current rate $1,000,000.

596  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Law Enforcement Attending Bitcoin Meetups Undercover? on: October 25, 2013, 01:14:08 PM
From my understanding, undercovers are limited in their ability to have direct, long term relationships with people on forums and such. So the undercover's probably spend alot more itme reading than trolling.

Also if you ask them they have to tell you they're a cop. This is how that works, yes it is.

So any law enforcement officers please post in the thread below this post. Thank you.

Lol is that before or after they snort your cocaine to validate its good stuff?

597  Economy / Speculation / Re: Strategies to increase Bitcoin holdings using only Bitcoin on: October 23, 2013, 01:37:03 PM
This may be a dumb question... but still I wonder:

Other than buying with fiat, are there any strategies to increase BTC holdings? What kind of trading would be involved?

Thanks!

Buy low sell high then buy low again.
598  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling a large amount of BTC on: October 23, 2013, 01:33:34 PM
I'm not sure yet, but I may want to sell 1000+ BTC in the next couple of weeks. If you can do this more cheaply than Bitstamp, PM me. Large US wire transfers (or similar) only. No ACH, PayPal, Western Union, etc.

Uh oh, this is a bad sign. Is something going on that you want to tell us about?

I doubt he has more insider knowledge like he did with GBLSE.

Transaction is unconfirmed, wait for it to update before you freak out  Cool

If you sent 10 coin out, and then deposited 3.95 coin, its your wallet, the balance should update.
