821  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Without power, how many years can a hardware wallet retain data? on: September 28, 2023, 10:54:18 AM

USB flash drives typically use TLC, and after 2-3 years without power, it may experience data loss.
So, how many years can a hardware wallet (like trezor one) retain data without power?

Flash memory drives used in hardware wallets are not TLC so unlike USB which uses TLC (Triple-Level Cell)which is aimed to store more data in a cell has less durability and 3000 P/E cycles.

Whereas hardware Wallets uses SLC (Single-level cell) which provides the highest endurance possible with expected 100K P/E cycles so technically it can last longer than the USB drives but I don't expect it to last longer, than 5 to 10 years because the durability is affected by various other factors too so even if you keep HW safe you need to have physical backup(s) of your recovery seeds.

I broke my previous hardware wallet by just not openly it for a year. Hardwallet needs to be open even once a month as per the general care description of the device.
I don't think so because the HW wallets are built to last long and the firstt thing that can break down in HW is the battery used to powerup which means lesser you connect the most life can be expected. So there is no reason for your HW to broke unless it damaged physically or exposed to extreme weather conditions.
822  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Have you seen gambling advertisements on TV? Opinion. on: September 28, 2023, 08:31:04 AM
If I am not wrong in many countries advertising TV commercials is somewhat prohibited or restricted and also gambling platforms concentrate more on serious ways of advertising than just making funny ads on TV and expecting people to use them.

For example, casinos create sponsorship offer deals with popular franchise link football clubs then their logo will be in their jersey or some sort of it so whenever the team plays and the game Aired there will be millions of viewers watching the casino logo too and that is going to bring the actual customers and also creates more brand value to their name which adds further benefits.
823  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: changed seed phrase on new laptop, does older lap top wallet still work? on: September 27, 2023, 04:44:54 PM
i dont have the new seed phrase
What do you mean by the new seed?

The recovery seed is still the same no matter how many times you imported the wallet to different devices.

Or you are saying that you created a new electrum on your new laptop and moved all your funds to it?

original seed was the one Electrum provided when i created account. i changed it to my own custom 12 word seed on new/stolen laptop

You can't change the seeds after creating a wallet, different seeds will give you a completely different address and private keys not the same.
824  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: changed seed phrase on new laptop, does older lap top wallet still work? on: September 27, 2023, 04:36:27 PM
Recovery seed will work on every device where you import the wallet and that is the actual purpose of recovery seed.

Before doing anything with your hard disk, just create a copy of the hard drive with another SSD or HDD so that your data is safe when you try to boot the hard drive with another system and it corrupts the wallet file.

But what you need to do is to create a new Electrum wallet and move all your funds back to the new address because the one who stole the laptop can access the funds too even if the system is password protected cause it won't take too long to brute force your laptop's password.
825  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Reasons you should not gamble on too many things at once. on: September 27, 2023, 02:37:27 PM
If you have the habit of playing and gambling on different sports and game, I think it is not good because of some few reasons like;
YOU WILL SPEND MORE MONEY ON GAMBLING.

Apart from this, I don't find any other things as bad for the gamblers but even this is the mistake done by the user due to their negligence and mismanagement of funds.

But I can give you a valid reason for why someone should not bet on multiple sports at a time because it is really hard to excel at the stats which is really important to be successful in sports betting so don't try to concentrate on multiple games unless you have the photographic memory. Cheesy

Also you should manage time as well as same as money which is the main reason why someone becomes addicted to anything whether it's gambling, drinking or even studying and there is some saying that "Too much of anything is good for nothing", so keep everything under your control.

Actually i have no problem with OP's idea, as long as it's not enabled by default and user must manually click button such as "Sort by merit, date" on each thread. Just don't forget not all reply has quote of thread/it's previous reply which could cause confusion.

Sorting replies by the number of merits is not a really good idea cause how can we decide that the post that has more merits is the best reply of every thread cause it varies due to different factors.

For example, a post that is on the first page possibly will get more attention so likely to get more merits if the content serves the purpose of the OP's query but sorting replies based on merits will collapse the structure of the discussion and a thread is supposed to be a place discussion happens so implementing such feature as default may create a chaos overall.
828  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another post cautioning you of influencers on: September 27, 2023, 08:03:40 AM
However, in one of videos that I watched recently he promoted the 1xbet which is obvious scam gambling site.

1xBet is actually a legitimate (not recommended) and different casino from 1xBit we know from bitcointalk. But there are some evidence that both are run by the same parent company.

Now, I don't have anything on these guys, I'd do same in my signature, I wouldn't bother much what I'm promoting as long as I'm having my payment.
It's subjective but my preference will be not promoting anything that causes others to lose their money because I have to be honest with the people whom I am influencing which may not look attractive but trust me in the long run it will pay you off.

But I get your point and I totally agree with it, no matter who says what, we should not trust our money without any research done by us and make sure it is what actually and whether it benefits me in any way.
829  Other / Meta / Re: Request for sent merit edit button on: September 26, 2023, 12:02:15 PM
even though I have given thousands of merits I always have a stack of them to give.
Not everyone has that privilege, Cheesy I remember even a few merit sources complain about the low allocation of source merit which is not enough to cover all the good posts they witness.

But editing the merit after being sent is not likely in my choice. (Don't take away someone's joy, even if it happened due to a mistake).

giving a popup confirmation will defeat the actual purpose once they get used to it but it will be a real pain for people who used to send more merits. But what about giving a popup warning only for merit TX if it exceeds a certain amount, in my opinion, a warning for every merit TX for more than 10 merits can serve the purpose.

831  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [WARNING] Crypto casino scam on teh move again. on: September 25, 2023, 05:39:59 PM
I saw a thread made by @Coin_trader and i thought id share a scam i have seen popping up again aswell. This has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks, so im guessing the same group/individual is at it again.

What it looks like:

A account will contact you on one of the social platforms or apps. (For me it has happened on Twitter, Telegram and Discord). The account will often have a tag or something related to the casino they "represent" and act as a dissapointed employee/mod.

They will approach you and say something like this: Hey, i have seen you on gambling telegram or in a casinos chat room and i have a deal for you. They offer you an "exploit" that would allow you to win easily but they want 30% in return. They often offer screenshots etc of admin panel and so on.

They then give you a link to a casino and ask you to deposit there. BUT in reality, they control the casino and once you deposit, the money is theirs. And you have been scammed.

This happened to a friend of mine aswell a few weeks ago, and he fell for it (small loss luckily). As he went to withdraw, they asked for his KYC aswell. So not only can you loose all your money, they get your ID aswell.

In short, be careful out there. Crooks are getting creative.

People are really falling for such a lame attempt?

That's ridiculous.

I won't say they are getting creative, it's just stick to the book and let the greed overtakes the mind. Because how can you even start trust someone with a random website used to say its a casino?

If they tried to create an exact replica of an existing reputed casino and make you to deposit your money there then it's called creative but here they are just pointing you to deposit a random website they used to work and and you are falling for it that's why its dump thing to do.

Money never comes easy and if someone says so then ask them why they're not the richest person on the planet. Grin
832  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PLEASE HELP ACCLRATOR the transaction on: September 24, 2023, 05:22:40 PM
if i wait how much day you think its take
and no miner here can take money and confirm it
As said 14 days is the time period when most nodes will drop your TX from mempool and its already 1 week since the TX broadcasted now you may have to wait for one more week to see the transaction disappear from your exchange wallet.

So the user has to send the amount back to you with a higher fee if you don't want to get into the same situation.

Paying a miner for $350 worth of TX is most likely not possible, it can be done but you need to find a miner to do that which is unlikely possible in 2023 even in bitcointalk.

I am not sure this transacted amount is for a payment or something but as others said don't accept this as payment until you see at least one confirmation.
833  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC Pool Stats on: September 24, 2023, 12:41:59 AM
I checked https://btc.com/stats/pool and I see 2 pools have more than %50 power. Isn't it bad for ecosystem?
Less concentration of mining power is the actual decentralization so it is kind of jeopardizing the decentralized nature of bitcoin.

Why do miners stay in 2 big pools and give them more than %50 power? Even if they don't use it for evil.
Miners operates for making more money so its obvious that they can sustain being profitable only if they are under the pools where there is high chance of getting rewards and also geolocation plays a vital role in profit making so miner has to choose place the location where electricity is cheaper that is why it is scattered on few locations not all over the world.

But the fact is the Foundry USA and Antpool started to gain more miners when china restricted the mining operation that is th reason you may find the these two pools have very less total computational power compared to now.

Wouldn't it be better if total of the biggest pools are less than %50? Would you prefer 4 pools for %50 rather than 2 pools for %50?

2 or 4 doesn't make any big difference, as long as someone is having the control of 51% of total hash rate they can control the BTC network but practically they need to spend billions to make millions which doesn't make any sense that is the reason why 51% attack will never likely to be performed by someone even if they have control over 51% hash power.

While checkīng is I came to know that the course is both in the textual and video format which also increased my happiness, unfortunately, the video includes French language.
I wonder if there is some AI software that we could use to create a voiceover from French into English?
There are tons of AIs available for video translation for example Maestra. Which offers text-to-speech, translation, and Transcription and for far the accuracy is decent but the only thing is none of these AI tools are available for free so you have to spend hourly or take a monthly subscription to get access to the actual software.

I must be honest and say that I haven't checked the quality and how detailed the provided information is. But the more eyes we have on it, the better we can determine if it's something worth recommending as a learning source or not.
I checked random chapters in the beginners' courses which seems good but maybe a little higher standard for a real newbie once they get used to the crypto terms I believe these can be handy but if they give examples then it would be more better for example in setting up the wallet they didn't provide any wallet for setting up, they just mentioned the importance of keeping the seed words safe. I thought it would be better if they gave an example with a good wallet like electrum then it would be easier for one who wanted to learn.
835  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Express your opinions on Emerging Solutions Improving Wallet security on: September 23, 2023, 03:36:42 PM
Did you include wrong reference? Those link only talk about Zcash and Zcash wallet.
I don't see it as the wrong reference, because on the second link, I can see the link to the edge wallet app.

This is what they are mentioning as Zero-knowledge proof authentication for wallets as

That is why I said this is just nothing but previous-era coinbase wallet, using email to register, and password/PIN for login which means custodian wallet, and that is not preferred for storage at all.
836  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Express your opinions on Emerging Solutions Improving Wallet security on: September 23, 2023, 08:31:38 AM
1 - Continuous user behavioral biometrics authentication for wallets
references- https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1742-6596/1631/1/012104/pdf

The crypto community pays attention to privacy more than anything so they will not psyched for a wallet that gathers information from the users and what you are trying to create looks more dangerous

If this is the concept then the wallet will keep collecting biometric details from the user?

If there is any security breach in your security system, data will be leaked and our details will be available on the darknet for a few bucks. Roll Eyes So the scammers can use it to steal more money from us like bank accounts, credit cards, and what else?

2 - Threshold signature-based wallets

references- https://cryptoapis.io/blog/78-what-is-the-threshold-signature-scheme

This is nothing but a multi-signature concept But I want some clarification for this part "TSS transactions are data light since they contain the same amount of data as a normal single signature transaction. Being data light means they are faster and cheaper to verify with lower transaction fees (mining fees or gas). "
Cause if it's multi sig the TX fee will be higher but the ref said it will be the same as a single sig transaction so if you can make such a wallet then it will be a deal breaker but practically it is not possible (correct me if I am wrong).

3 - Zero-knowledge proof authentication for wallets - Like Edge wallet for Zcash

Reference -
https://youtu.be/VHkZnuM-VLE?si=lMg_VjJcJOsWno_s
https://z.cash/ecosystem/edge-wallet/

Edge wallet is a multi-crypto hot wallet, which is nothing but the previous era coinbase wallet which is highly not recommended for storing cryptos even if it's a small amount. So I recommend you to go with something that is non-custodial, no data collection and open-sourced if possible because that is what people from the crypto community wants to use for storing their cryptos.
837  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transaction problem - Wrong amount request made, no balance change. on: September 22, 2023, 07:03:36 PM
...
OP makes it look confusing, he did not receive the coins at all and he thinks his address will expire, but which is not correct.

That is why I asked for txid to get a clear picture of what he is trying to say.

Because he also said this followed by that
I have tried to track using the transaction ID
So I assumed it was unconfirmed that TX arrived in the tab but it also could be he got the txid from the friend and tried to track the receiving address via Blockchain Explorer.
838  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transaction problem - Wrong amount request made, no balance change. on: September 22, 2023, 06:41:48 PM
But OP is in the receiving end here so I guess it is unlikely to have any clipboard malware cause if it's in the first place then the funds sent by the friend will go to the hacker's wallet instead of OP's but he said he can see the unconfirmed TX which means the funds were sent to the right address as far as I am concerned.
Clipboard malware can affect the address that you copy and paste, not only the address that you copy and paste on your wallet sending tab. If you are sending the address through a message, it is likely that it can be replaced by a hackers address. Be it when you want to send bitcoin to someone or you want to send your address to someone, check and recheck that the address you send or that you want to use to send the coin is correct.
Of course, the clipboard hijacker can replace wherever we copy and paste the contents but talking about this scenario where OP can see the unconfirmed TX which means funds were sent to the right destination or am I missing anything here?
839  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transaction problem - Wrong amount request made, no balance change. on: September 22, 2023, 05:01:49 PM
The transaction doesn't show in the History tab, only in the Receive tab.
Likely either your device or your friend device has clipboard malware, in a way you or him will copy the address, but the device will paste hackers address.

Hello,

I have a transaction that was made without the proper request from the Electrum wallet.

I initially created a request for 1 mBTC, I sent the address, my friend instead sent a different amount. The transaction doesn't show in the History tab, only in the Receive tab. It has 21 hours left and it will expire. I have tried to track using the transaction ID but they receiving address is a different BTC address. I made sure that I sent the correct address and my friend copied it using his phone, so I don't think he coppied it wrong.

Can the money be recovered with a request that is in the wrong amount? Or are they lost forever.

Thank you, any help will be appreciated.
First of all, you don't need a request to receive TX, all they need is your BTC address so your friend likely copied and pasted your address and sent funds to you instead of using your request which might be the reason why you are seeing wrong amount.

Also, I wanted to ask that your friend send funds using a wallet or custodial service like exchange?

Even if it's from the wallet the funds may come to you from different UTXOs of different addresses which vary from wallet to wallet and which one you opted for.

To get a clear idea of what is happening, do you mind sharing the TX id?
840  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to get profit when have PC is idle and unused in home on: September 22, 2023, 05:08:28 AM
It's clear enough make me lose when mining Bitcoin or top coin market cap.
You can't mine Bitcoin with GPU anymore, it can be done only via ASICs.

So what should I do to earn profit when have a PC not used and lying idle in my home?. I have armagedon 29' monitor, core i5 9 generation, 16 GB Ram and GPU 1030 GTX 2GB. I actually intend to mining, but I don't know what coins I can mine with my PC specification.

Even if you want to mine altcoins which has any worth it can't be done with your GPU hash power you need multiple powerful GPUs which is decent enough to mine coin like ETC or something and I used some mining calculator which gave me an estimation of GT 1030 can generate more than 2.22 USD monthly income with a 8.67 MH/s hashrate on the RVN - KawPow (NBMiner) algorithm.

This means better not to mine at all with your machine, or you are just risking your hardware to wreck merely for nothing.

however you can consider mining ETH.
No one can mine ETH anymore since  Ethereum (ETH) has transitioned from a Proof of Work (PoW) to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism as a part of its Ethereum 2.0 upgrade which happened in 2022.

If you insist on mining BTC you can get a computer with better computation power  and don't forget to consider the electrical cost in your locality before venturing mining as it is very power consuming.

Mining BTC with GPU and CPU years are over a very long time and even with ASICs its highly difficult to make profits with the current mining difficulty of the BTC network.
