The reward was upped to 2 BTC on the main thread. I think IP address will be the only way to tell which means someone will have to be trusted with our ip addresses. Anyone else got any better ideas?
842  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis & other financial markets (bitcoinbullbear.com) on: December 11, 2011, 09:12:16 PM
I pledge another 1 BTC for the 100,000 viewer.

And if this can't be tracked in time, we will postpone to the 111,111 viewer or 150,000 ...

WOOO, the bounty is up to... 2 whole BTC!!!   Roll Eyes  Grin

hey, if you believe that 1 btc will be worth >$1000 at some pt soon in the future you'd be all over this.

edit:  since you don't see any value in this, then if you win, we'll give the 2 btc to someone else.  how's that?

Was either 100000 or witihin 2 hits. Didnt see it was up to 2BTC which would be really nice.
843  Economy / Speculation / Re: 1 BTC Reward offered on: December 11, 2011, 09:10:18 PM
was either 100000 or witihn 2 at the most. dont know how i can prove this though.
844  Economy / Speculation / Re: $3.20 in one big buy? on: December 11, 2011, 06:56:43 AM
I have noticed that virtually every time we have major market moves MTGoxlive goes down. Thankfully there are a few other sites that track mtgox in real time  so it doesnt hurt to have all of them running at once. I am not sure if it is a volume thing that is bringing mtgoxlive down but I dont think its a DOS attack. I am getting a 404 error which is new and a DOS attack would leave it unreachable.
845  Economy / Speculation / Re: $3.20 in one big buy? on: December 11, 2011, 05:33:03 AM
It seems to me like someone just bought 11k coins at 10 cents higher than they might have been able to.. A bid wall was placed at 3.195 and it got ate pretty fast. I guess we'll see what happens next.

Someone has 11k in coins i suspect they may not have wanted to actually buy. I think we can expect an hardened effort to continue raising the price. It is possible they are acquiring all these coins trying to trigger a bubble.
846  Economy / Speculation / $3.20 in one big buy? on: December 11, 2011, 05:24:02 AM
Just saw a massive buy rally up to 3.20 instantly which is the single biggest percentage rally i have seen in my times of watching MTGox yet. What does everyone figure is going on now and are we headed up or down?

I have to think someone with a lot of cash and coins might have just hit the buy button on an order instead of sell. I suppose we could be headed for a big rally up to 4 soon but this seems like more of a fluke to me and think we will be down towards 3 again soon.
847  Economy / Speculation / Re: Prediction contest: when will bitcoin break $4? on: December 07, 2011, 12:34:48 AM

848  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will the highs and lows of the next 24 hours be? on: December 06, 2011, 12:54:06 PM
I didnt think we were gonna clear $3 but I guess I was wrong.
849  Economy / Speculation / What will the highs and lows of the next 24 hours be? on: December 06, 2011, 04:59:26 AM
Because the big bid walls are down where does everyone think we are going for the next 24 hours (highs and lows)?

My personal guess is 2.99 high and 2.81 low.

Well maybe the user doesnt want to stray from the thread. It might have been too much reading to read many threads and asked advice which is what the topic of this post is about. The person obviously didnt find the thread themselves or they wouldnt have posted.

851  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [280 GH/s] ABCPool.co - 0% fee PPS & 0.1% invalid shares! on: December 03, 2011, 02:57:10 AM
Just came home from lunch and Im noticing I disconnected twice inside a 5 minute period. Are there any server issues right now or is this normal for this pool?

[Update]

I havent seen any disconnects tonight and it seems like the server just ran out of work when I checked my console in GUIMiner. I have since set a fallback pool although since my hash rate hasnt dropped I dont know if its working. Thats a good thing.

Any reason you're using GUIMiner versus CGMINER? I was the happiest person in the world when I discovered CGMINER and swapped.

I do sort of miss Phoenix's slightly-higher (for me anyways) performance, but CGMINER's features are just stunning. I don't CARE if ABC goes down, since I know they'll all move over to someone else, intelligently Cheesy

I guess just for simplicity. Its easier for me to click a button than run a command line which I do with Ufasoft for my cpu mining. I also never had issues with deepbit so that was not a problem. I am willing to deal with a maybe 1% downtime overall for at least 5% greater payout. Maybe now that deepbit is no longer my main pool and I am very familiar with command based operations I will further explore cgminer.

What about $1M to $1B? Cant forget what BTC might have to go to if we get a few billionaires in this with a limited supply  Cool
853  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Uses of waste mining heat? on: December 02, 2011, 10:57:30 PM
I would not want water inside my computer case so I would look for a non-conductive heat transfer fluid (many liquid cooling systems use them).

There almost no fluids with higher thermal conductivity and lower electrical conductivity than distilled water.  The few that do exist are prohibitively expensive.  If you can't get around the need for using water that likely makes the problem uneconomical.

Distilled water is only so good at being nonconductive and it easily picks up ions from just about anything including the impeller on the pump that would be pumping it. Water is one of the most corrosive liquids around in deionized forms (eats away at brass, or anything with iron and water is also what brings down mountains over time). This could pose a problem for heat exchangers. I also assume that you mean deionized and not distilled because distilled could still be somewhat conductive.

Sure the nonconductive fluid would be expensive but it would only be necessary on the closed loop connected to the chips. The heat exchangers would probably be similarly expensive but if you were doing something like this it is what I would recommend. You are already spending thousands as is.

Meh.  Been watercooling systems for 7 years now.  Never had ions in water kill a rig.  I have blown many components over the years for non-water reasons.  Heat exchangers are pretty simply and cheap.

High thermal conductive and low electrically conductive fluids are incredibly expensive and have to be changed regularly as they will become ionized over time also.  Flourinet is about $300 per gallon for example.  Use high quality tubing, distilled water, and good connectors.  The risk honestly isn't that high.

Water is incredibly good for cooling which is why it is used in everything from super computers, to racecars, to nuclear reactors.

I have never run one of these special fluids so I will take your word on that they have to be changed because of ionization. Water is excellent at dissolving things and at my job I have seen DI water completely dissolve brass over time (also very toxic to drink). Heat exchangers can vary in price depending on efficiency and design. I guess one more point against the fluids I mentioned would be if you have a breach in your heat exchanger wall (happens more than you think) then you would have contaminated your water. I believe the thermal conductivity for water is 1C/W-mL or something along those lines which is very good. Not going to argue with you at all on that. This is all good to know in case I ever plan on water cooling my PC (I will use DI with a plastic impeller pump).

As per my suspicion earlier I am definitely getting more stales/invalids at ABCPool than deepbit. There is long polling but it does not seem to be as effective. Even wiht this I am sure the payout is higher (assuming you do not donate). If you take donations into account you might just be better off at Deepbit with their proportional. The regular use miners are to allow for HD videos so they are not run as often.

It would require a lot of work but you could use a heat exchange to pre-heat water for hot water heater.  Every watt of thermal energy you dump into the hot water heater is a watt you don't need to spend money for.  Obviously this requires water cooling.  The "warm" air exhausted from GPU is simply hot concentrated enough to be of any use.  Removing that heat by water makes the waste heat more "usable".

I would not want water inside my computer case so I would look for a non-conductive heat transfer fluid (many liquid cooling systems use them). You would then need a secondary heat exchanger which would then exchange heat with the water or air depending on your use. You would have to be careful though because if your heat isnt removed (ie you dont need hot air or water atm) then the heat could build up in the cooling medium and you could end up overheating. You would need some sort of a controller. Also depending on how many devices you are trying to cool with your liquid cooling setup you would want parallel lines run to each device because if it were connected in series you would be removing the cooling capabiltiy of the fluid (less of a delta T). This being said you would either be running your system warm or your cooling medium wouldnt be very warm and not very efficient for heating air or water (efficiency is driven by delta T).

It can be done but there are many limitations. One of the major limitations is cost because so far based on what I just described you could be up a few grand in costs. I think in new york they are contemplating using heat from servers for building heating. Its nice to dream of these things though lol.

Back to the ABCPool vs Deepbit

I have earned 0.40950177 BTC since joining last night. The shares I have produced do not match their calculations but my payout seems to be. It also seems to have a higher payout than Deepbit. I will be sticking with this pool and have deepbit set as my backup. I noticed three times around noon their server ran out of work so that is when I decided to set up the backup. Havent cofirmed the backup but am running it in GUIMiner as parameter  --backup http://user:pass@f1.deepbit.net:8332 (for some reason I cannot connect to the main deepbit server).

I would now recommend this configuration to anyone else looking for a pool. Plus with ABCPool you can get the cool picture that updates your hash rates in real time in my picture courtesy of BTStats.
Why not start your own thread in technical support ?  I don't think you can help anyone decide which pool is "generally best" based on your limited observations.

What exactly is limited about noticing that I get more payout from ABC than Deepbit? That to me seems like a very astute and relevant observation. It is also relevant if the pool cannot supply enough work. Stop trying to flame me already and stay on topic.
858  Economy / Speculation / Re: Next metastable trading range on: December 02, 2011, 05:24:12 AM
I think we might be 3-4 to stay for a while. Any other range IMO will not be "stable".

I started this thread within minutes and it has been days. We will see how it pans out with time. I am not guaranteeing this by any means I am just wondering what other peoples take is. That is the purpose of the poll. So guys should I reset it?
