441  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: 105% PPS "Project #2" Don't pay a fee to mine! Get paid 5% on: January 24, 2012, 04:48:58 AM
I would give it a whirl but I'm only at 410Mhash and the card I have keeps on going up in price instead of down for buying another one.

That being said I would like to join if you would let me.
442  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Lowered fee for the rest of January! on: January 24, 2012, 03:55:01 AM
You have probably noticed ABCPool was down for more than a day last week due to a DDOS attack. While we have been working around the clock to mitigate it, it's near impossible to continue service during such attacks. Several large pools have shown that in the past (deepbit, slush, btc guild to name a few). Still, we are working hard on a number of countermeasures for the future that will at least be effective in some scenarios.

We are sorry for any downtime the attack has caused you.

For your mining pleasure we have lowered the nominal fee to 1.5% for the rest of January!

Happy hashing!
MC

Thank you for listening.

Interesting theory and it has happened to me a couple of times but the larger movements are primarily due to bitcoinica.

If you like the old interface, which I suggest you use then it is available at classic.mtgox.com
444  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 23, 2012, 05:43:42 AM
I have to think that this is all due to someone like from the thread of the year. Someone who was up a lot of money at bitcoinica and then got liquidated saying how much of a criminal zhou is. They probably wrote to the ISP and compelled them to remove the entry (or worked for Comcast). It would be interesting though if Zhou threatened legal action in retaliation for Comcast essentially removing his site from the internet.
445  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 23, 2012, 05:34:37 AM
wow so this is why bitcoinica hasnt been loading for me!   Shocked

just installed openDNS screw comcast!

You don't have to install any software. You can use googles DNS so you just point your router or pc at 4.4.4.4 or 8.8.8.8
446  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 23, 2012, 05:09:27 AM
This DNS issue is old and has been discussed in other threads. I suggest changing your DNS.
Actually, this is NOT old, as the DNSSEC stuff just got fully implemented by Comcast as of January 10. Mostly, I was curious if Zhoutong had any input as to why his site wouldn't get blocked. Instead, we got a massive tangent about politics and freedom. Well, guess what: I changed to Google's DNS servers and I can hit Bitcoinica again, but it still sucks that major ISPs are blocking this stuff.

And as an aside, I wrote to all three of my local representatives about SOPA/PIPA and told them the legislation sucked and I strongly opposed it. They all gave me political BS answers, including two who said something to the effect of, "the PROTECT IP Act (SOPA) has some serious problems; I've helped work on a better act called the OPEN Act that you should appreciate...." Well, I haven't looked into the OPEN Act yet, but I'm betting pretty heavily that by the time it reaches the senate floor, it too will be filled with garbage from the lobbyists of the world.

You are welcome.
447  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] What do you think the price will be 7 days froim now? on: January 23, 2012, 04:40:24 AM
Stable.. no..

Everyone realizing they cant change where ever the manipulator wants us,  Yes..

The manipulator is not a ghost anymore, they exist, they showed themselves last week in a bold show of power.

The Evil Smack-Down Witch can release the Flying Monkeys any time.

Im just frightened that the evil smack down aka manipulator is just bitcoinica adjusting its hedges.. and having cascading effects when liquidations happen... Sad

Food for thought albeit paranoid ones..  Tongue

I have been saying this for a while now. This is why I have submitted it as a question to be asked during Zhou's interview.
448  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [ANN] Changes to AML Policies - Mt.Gox on: January 23, 2012, 04:37:49 AM
MTGox, I would like you to tell us how many exceptions you have made to the withdrawal limit rules. I.E. cases which you required ID to withdraw amounts less than specified, or proxy cases as we seem to have come to the conclusion that those can trigger ID requirements.

If there are ANY other cases which you are requiring ID then we have the right to know.

I deposit 350btc sell high, buy low, then withdraw a little less than 400 purposefully to avoid having to deal with ID requirements. Now I can totally see my btc being held hostage on some random day that I need the liquidity, so will I get hit?

dude, this is exactly what happened to me.

So we have one case so far. This is a bit disturbing but at the same time I could see a withdraw slightly below the threshold being viewed as suspicious.
449  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 23, 2012, 04:32:56 AM
Well, I'm really glad we spawned such a fascinating conversation about power and politics  Roll Eyes

Cypherdoc, you're on Comcast. Comcast's in America the last time I checked. @myself, in case you thought you were still in Karbombistan, you actually do have rights in America. For example, you have the right to remain silent; you have the right to an attorney. You have the right to complain loudly and to lobby your congressman about not being able to use a foreign casino website. But you won't. Because you say you want freedom of speech... but really you're too lazy to do anything other than bitch on a forum. Maybe you should bitch about the fact that you live in a fascist country. You just want convenience. So everybody else in the world should bend over backwards, take risks and break laws so you can do whatever you want, whenever you want to do it.But just wait. When those foreign law-breaking casinos run off with your money? It's "Boohoo I'm being censored" one day, and "Boohoo Mr. Policeman, those criminals took my money" tomorrow. Or else, "Oh no, my government shut down my favorite casino and they won't give me my money back. Guess I'll go back to watching Regis until the next idiots come along who I can gamble with for three months before my government shuts them down." Write a letter to your fuckin Attorney General. Tell him you're a victim of censorship. It's a free country they say, and stamps are cheap.

+1

I think this post gets the best response from a bitcoin company award.
450  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica: When does it implode? on: January 23, 2012, 04:31:20 AM
Someone set us up the bomb! Need more poll updates! All your Bitcoins are belong to us! Grin

I see you like my signature Tongue

In regards to the topic I think it will be sooner rather than later.
451  Economy / Speculation / Re: RIP bitcoinica ? on: January 23, 2012, 03:56:28 AM
Liquidity might not be the right word but he doesn't seem to have the reserve(a kind of liquidity imo) to cover any long positions. If he does create his own bitcoin exchange what would prevent these starfishes from occurring? This would in turn force the price down since no one would be able to buy them or sell them. I just don't see how an exchange is going to help him with this problem.
452  Economy / Speculation / Re: RIP bitcoinica ? on: January 23, 2012, 03:53:24 AM
Zhou is busy coding the new and improved bitcoinica I would presume..

The public spoke, he tends to listen.. Smiley

The last I heard from him he actually admitted to losing some money during the big swing last week. Ever since then there appears to be a liquidity issue at the site. Usually he listens to the users but with the inability to go long and purchase bitcoins for so long I now have to question the financial feasibility of the site.
453  Economy / Speculation / Re: RIP bitcoinica ? on: January 23, 2012, 03:41:48 AM
It is still starfished on the buy (long) side. It has been like that at least all day and if I were a regular user of bitcoinica I would be upset about this. Interestingly I have not seen Zhou show himself on these forums during this period which he usually does to reassure users. I would say that this is probably the most post worthy topic of discussion on these forums right now but I do not see a whole lot of it.
454  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] What do you think the price will be 7 days froim now? on: January 23, 2012, 02:41:02 AM
Voting is now locked. Quite the even distribution among all the options. I will reiterate that I think this is a sign we are in a stable trading range.
455  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 22, 2012, 08:59:51 PM
i was really annoyed to get this when i clicked on this site in the notable articles section:

https://strikesapphire.com/

i'm not even sure what this site is or what it represents but getting any kind of censorship doesn't sit right with me.  my isp is Cox Communications.

Well damn.  I can't even get to it using a proxy.

That is the sites logo so that is the site itself that is blocking you out. It is a bitcoin casino.
456  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 22, 2012, 08:22:41 PM
So I noticed a couple days ago that Bitcoinica suddenly went down. I thought perhaps someone else would start a thread, but after a few days with no posts I decided to look into it more. Well, as you probably guessed from the subject, Bitcoinica is not down, but it appears Comcast's DNS servers are no longer resolving the host name. Digging a little deeper, I found the following:

First, here are the current DNS addresses for Comcast users (I think it's for all users):
http://dns.comcast.net/dns-ip-addresses.php
75.75.75.75
75.75.76.76

I thought those IPs looked rather odd, but apparently they're legit -- and easy to remember. But do they do anything different? Well, here's a quote from the above page:
Quote
These IP addresses are distributed across many servers via Anycast for redundancy and reliability. As part of our ongoing efforts to protect our customers and provide great security features, DNSSEC validation is now automatically included as part of Comcast Constant Guard™ from Xfinity. Learn more about DNSSEC at our DNSSEC Information Center or by watching this short video.

Click on DNSSEC and you get the following page: http://www.dnssec.comcast.net/
Another potentially pertinent quote:
Quote
DNSSEC Deployment Completed!
Tuesday, January 10, 2012

As noted here on our blog, we have signed all of our domain names and all customers are now using DNSSEC-validating resolvers. Comcast is the first large ISP in the North America to have fully implemented DNSSEC, as part of ongoing efforts to protect our customers with Constant Guard™ from Xfinity.

So my bet is that somehow their DNSSEC initiative has decided that bitcoinica.com is not a safe website or something. Any thoughts on this? Other than changing my DNS server, it seems I can at least just connect directly to the Bitcoinica IP address (50.56.4.62), but https is not available if I do that, and come to think of it https://www.bitcoinica.com gave me the crossed out https as well. Perhaps that is the problem: Bitcoinica's certificate isn't valid, at least with Comcast? Does that sound right? Anyone else have thoughts or other details on this?

Wow and this before SOPA even. It is my understanding that this is what SOPA would be like.

For the time being use googles DNS servers 4.4.4.4 or 8.8.8.8
457  Economy / Speculation / Re: Speculate....GO on: January 22, 2012, 07:44:21 PM
The asterisk is gone from the buy on bitcoinica. This means we can resume normal activity and we can really go in any direction.

I spoke too soon it is back. It really seems like bitcoinica is helping to suppress the price at this point.

Bitcoinica can't suppress a price. Sufficient volume of people selling at a given ask is what prevents price rising. If people stopped selling then the price would go up.
If the buying volume needs leverage to support it, then that doesn't sound like a sustainable price.

Bingo.

When you say this you forget that people are leveraged in a short and can continue to do so. Any leveraged position is unsustainable and that includes short ones.
458  Economy / Speculation / Re: Speculate....GO on: January 22, 2012, 07:26:07 PM
I notice the 300BTC fake ask wall bot is back. Just watch if we approach those 2 walls they will vaporize.

If people can only put money to make the price go down on bitcoinica then it is directly suppressing the price.

because nobody wants to buy of course and it's sunday.

sunday is funday

I have heard of the weekend dip for a month or two now but have yet to observe it. Maybe this is something of bitcoin history? Of course if you are wrong then I will have to retract my statement.

in the recent few months we had more weekend spikes than dips, the weekend dips indeed was a feature of past summer
this weekend is simply exhausted (as i was writing this there is a promising spike, not sure how powerful it will be)

Wow it just keeps going up.

Now we will find out how big of a rally we can have when going long is starfished on Bitcoinica. Something tells me that we won't make it too far since people can only leverage down.
