You can use the "Restore from 25 word mnemonic seed" option in the Wizard to verify you wrote down your seed correctly.

When I go to restore wallet from 25 word mnemonic seed, I enter it correctly and wants to name a new wallet. Basically its a new wallet with no moneros. I sent a test of 1 monero yesterday and it is my original wallet, which I can access with just my password.

So I couldnt test to see if my mnemonic seed is correct.

If you restore from the 25 word mnemonic seed a new wallet always has to be created. Thus, you could just create a new wallet (by restoring from the 25 word mnemonic seed) and check if the address (and seed) matches that of your already existing wallet.

hey guys,

my wallet is nearly finished with syncing and about 2 hours ago i sent 1 xmr to my wallet from poloniex. still not received ... how long should it take?


Will not show up until finished syncing. To increase your privacy you might want to send from Polo to mymonero first then to the official wallet.

Still not finished syncing and still no monero received... should i start worying? syncing goes soooooo slow and somtimes it jumps back from " green almost finished " to " orange ( more blocks ) "

Yes, you need only seed (25 words) to restore your wallet.
To be sure just do it yourself in gui or cli wallet and check that generated monero address exactly the same everytime.

But I gues the Monero works different way? The way that an ordinary human is expects the wallet to behave. When a send transaction is made, the Monero wallet, CLI and GUI send the remaining XMR, the exchange back to the original address which has been created from a 25 word seed?

So when the user just stores the 25 word seed, he has access to all the XMR and the exchange of the transactiosn in spite of how many send transactions and received transactions has been made from the address that has been generated from that seed?

Correct. The change is sent back to the same public address as the transaction originated from. This is different from Bitcoin, where usually change is sent back to a different public address.

Hey guys,

i am following this thread for a long time now and this is my first post. i am into moneros nearly from the beginning but now i am really
wondering what the best way is to store my coins safely ...

in the GUI or cold storage?

Do i need a new computer that i keep offline if i do it in the GUI?
If i keep in the GUI and my computer crashes, are my coins gone then? or can i recover them on a new computer ?

a little help would be nice , i know this is off topic but you guys are the only ones i want to ask this to as i am following this thread for a while now Smiley

Hi, I have been in your shoes - Here is what I have done.

1. backup all three wallet files & also write down your mnemonic seed
2. Make copies of all of these in different spots/drives etc.
3. Now, I made ANOTHER copy of my 3 wallet files and put them in a new folder called TEST
4. In the GUI, I opened the file as an existing wallet.

Done, right?  Well I thought so too. However, My system rebooted at some point, and my wallet files became corrupt and I could not open them.  Huh  Huh

Normally, panic would ensue. However, I simply deleted my corrupt TEST folder full of wallet files, and recopied the old original files to a new TEST folder and reopened the same wallet in the GUI. Everything is fine again, no worries.  Cool

Point is - You can go back to the old version using this method, or stay on the new, as the original files are all there and so are the seed.

No, unless you erroneously noted down the 25 word mnemonic seed.

1. Is the wallet name shown somewhere on the GUI?
2. Is there a way to determine the corresponding mixin# for each of the privacy levels on the GUI?

I most likely have more questions but I'll wait until after I get the chance to explore it thoroughly (still in the midst of syncing). Otherwise, it's a very nice interface. Kudos to the devs/contributors.

[2] Again, it would be nice to correlate each privacy level/steps with the corresponding mixin count on the GUI to eliminate guesswork and for the sake of user-friendliness.

2 is the minimum enforced mixin, but monero-wallet-cli and monero-wallet-gui use 4 as minimum. The Monero Research Lab recommends 4, but also recommend a bump in increments (0 -> 2 -> 4). A minimum enforced mixin of 2 prevents chain reactions (with respect to traceability). in Monero that are detrimental to privacy. See:

Note that Monero is cryptographically untraceable and unlinkable.

Currently, monero-wallet-cli allows 2 in contrast with the GUI's minimum of 4 (the slider cannot go below 4 or "low"). If a minimum mixin of 4 is going to be enforced moving forward for obvious reasons and eventually do away with 2, then I can understand.



Only via RPC as far as I know. It uses 4 by default (should have said that instead of minimum).

Is there a good Android wallet for XMR at this point, or even better is there a way to move it to cold storage and know the private key and also be able to check the balance somehow on the "blockchain"?  

Sorry if this is a dumb question that doesn't make sense, but I have some XMR on an exchange and just trying to figure out the best way to move it off of there and secure it.  I want to be able to extract the private key for sure though, without anyone else having access to it.

To all pool operators:

If you haven't already, you will need to update the node-cryptonote-util software in order for your pool to cross the january fork. I think many of the pool ops have done so already, but for those who are not in #monero-pools, you will need this patch: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/506116/17116821/

This applies to zone117x's version of the pool. There is a version of this ported to clintar's fork, which I don't have handy right now, but I will post it when I do is here: https://github.com/M5M400/node-cryptonote-util/commit/37f50f9b535f0258c3a1c6f7247a891b4c211ff3.

If you're not running this when the fork happens, you will be forked off.

For pool miners, you may want to check with your pool op that they're running the patch a few days before the fork, and switch to a known good pool otherwise. Please prefer smaller pools when doing so.
