One last question.  What is the emission / inflation rate of monero and where does it end?  currently at 11.8m according to coincap...will it go higher than that?

The base supply for variable rewards (each block pays out a tiny fraction of the remaining base supply, so as a result the block reward continuously decline slowly) is about 18.4 million. Once the reward reaches a minimum of 0.3/minute (0.6 per block given the current 2 minute blocks, though that could change) it will stay there forever. In theory this means the total supply is infinite, but once it reaches the 0.3/minute level the rate of growth will be very slow, <1% per year.

You can also observe the daily inflation here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qXi7zUSIh7F6UuSuhOryyFbHEy_LJuym3I3neAga_2s/

Hasn't been adjusted for 2 minute blocks yet, but that doesn't really matter since the inflation per minute stayed the same.

Sorry if stupid question :
I have an old (pre)monero 0.8.8.6 wallet.bin file.
I ran 0.9.4.0 and when opening the wallet.bin file in simplewallet I get

Code:
Error: failed to load wallet: incompatible native format - size of long

What can I do ?  --generate-from-keys wallet.bin.keys ?

Thx for your advice.

In addition to other advices, make sure you are on the same operating system as the one where your old wallet was generated.

Interestingly Coinmarketcap now also lists volume of XMR pairs, in addition to the XMR/BTC pairs, see:

I was sorely tempted to go leveraged long at ~180k, but didn't due to

1. Pegasus' "don't be me" advice, and
2. my obscure 2FA device takes a while to boot up.

You face a similar decision to two days ago.  The price is at 215k.  In a few weeks it might be at 450k, or 120k.  Either way, margin is gambling pure and simple.  As a highly visible member of the community, the only thing I can ethically recommend is that no one should ever buy Monero on margin, nor should ever short Monero..

That said, the odds are probably more in your favor now than they were a month ago, but that is all you can surmise - relative probabilities.  There are still no guarantees about the future of the price.

Proper investing is a different story: one can take a rational survey of all the different blockchains in existence and come to a conclusion that Monero is the best one - therefore parking your value in Monero and sitting isn't such a major gamble, in the long-long term.  Usually superior tech trumps all others (especially with this field of clowns we face).  You could still lose, but you would have lost making the best possible decision.

But margin?  You have to predict that more people will buy more Monero now vs. later.  That's a hard damn thing to predict, and the moment you are margined your emotions will come into play.  It's also a zero sum game.  The only things that will truly make Monero more valuable are a.) more computers mining it and b.) more people believing it has value and desiring it.  Traders washing bits back and forth between themselves does nothing but add a little liquidity to the market and help price discovery.

I don't really agree with the bolded (shorting). Shorts provide usefull liquidity, both to the extent of volume and bids/asks (they have to buy back at some point). Also, if one doesn't use leverage whilst shorting it isn't really that more risky. A trader denominated in USD would prefer a short over "selling in order to buy back lower" any day.
1307  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 21, 2016, 10:09:29 AM
Soon some consolidation around 0.0018-0.002 area with stability.
After that one more dead cat bounce which is the last selling opportunity before the deep and long dive.
0.004'ish price will be regained in spring 2017.

Please TC....after all this time everyone in here knows your "TA" is based exactly on your trading positions and not the other way round.

I guess this makes you kind of a funny mascot but it is getting old. I really don't understand why you would choose the relatively contained volatility of XMR for your BTC accumulation. There are markets you could throw any way you wanted with your funds.

Guess he ought to change his signature back to the original one. At least (newer) people will know his intentions then.

Hi, I opened a node but this site doesn't show it - https://monerohash.com/nodes-distribution.html   Does this mean that there is a problem with my bitmonerod?  It does say something like -28 days ahead and unknown top block  but i'm sure that it is synced because I can use my wallet. BTW it took like 20 hours... on good pc and internet connection (a bit too long).  But why it says so now?

Do you have your port open? In case you haven't you will only have outgoing connections and therefore your node won't show up on the map. Alternatively, it could be that the monerohash node isn't yet connected to you and therefore your node isn't showing up on the map.

-28 days ahead could either be a peer that is stuck or someone else that is syncing. If you use the "status" command in bitmonerod you can see the number of incoming and outgoing connections.

sigh...I hope I didn't lose the funds.  I think everything is synced so I did what u said and put the files in there.  It does show the address that MoneroX created, but it says zero balance.  It should say 118 XMR

Sorry for being dense, I'm used to having a GUI.

You need to start simplewallet and tell it to use account.bin, either as a command line option or from the terminal interface. Assuming you got that done right, make sure you try to type 'refresh' without quotes into simplewallet while daemon is running and synced.

daemon = bitmonerod.exe?

EDIT: Yep, thanks...works!  Smiley

diff and status are commands that need to be entered into the daemon. To transfer coins out of your wallet you need to be fully synced. According to your last screenshot you are probably fully synced. Like I said, try diff or status in bitmonerod.exe (the daemon) and see if the block height is equal to the one reported on http://moneroblocks.info/. The "-28 days ahead" is from a peer that is connected to you, but who is still syncing.

Yep, height is matching.  Thanks.  Smiley

I guess my next question is how to transfer funds...

transfer <mix> <address> <amount> [payment_id]

The last part confuses me...payment_id?  also why surround that in brackets instead of chevrons like the others?  I guess it is optional?
Again, I apologize in advance for being dumb.

[1] Payment ID is needed when sending to exchanges, merchants etc. Basically anyone that needs to verify the payment belongs to you. You can read more about it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/47qa32/circumstances_to_use_a_paymentid_circumstances/

[2] Between brackets because, like you correctly stated, it is an optional argument.

[3] If you don't specify the mixin number it will default to 4 in simplewallet, however the minimum is 2. Thus, let's say you want to donate 1 XMR to the core-team, who don't need to "identify" you, the full command would be:

Code:
 transfer 4 46BeWrHpwXmHDpDEUmZBWZfoQpdc6HaERCNmx1pEYL2rAcuwufPN9rXHHtyUA4QVy66qeFQkn6sfK8aHYjA3jk3o1Bv16em 1

If you didn't specify the mixin number it would've defaulted to 4 anyway.

If you want to send 1 XMR to Poloniex, for instance, the full command would be:

Code:
 transfer 4 <address_from_poloniex> 1 [payment_ID_provided_by_poloniex]

I'd advise to try it out with test amounts first to get a bit comfortable with it before sending large(r) amounts.

Source for the core-team address: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=700400.msg7914927#msg7914927

Regarding bolded, you don't have to apologize, most of us probably started like that.

anybody got some eth TA links?
i wonder how this could continue ^^
the volume is almost equal to btc  Roll Eyes

im also curious what vita and the rest will do with their ethers, i mean they are committed to sell at these insane prices

Unless I've missed a big announcement, it looks like the ETH rise is because of a) TheDAO crowdsale, and b) FOMO from the rapid increase itself. "TheDAO" has collected $157 million so far in its crowdsale, with more than a week to go. The only way to invest is with ETH, so people who want to get a share of "TheDAO" are buying ETH as fast as humanly possible.

My theory is that we'll see a rapid decline as soon as the crowdsale ends, though I could be wrong.

I think "TheDAO" is going to be one of the most spectacular collapses in the history of crypto...but it will probably FOMO a lot more before that happens. It's basically a venture capital fund that invests in other Ethereum-based businesses.

P.S. It looks like there is a big rumor about Coinbase adding ETH, but I'm not seeing an official announcement yet.
There's also the theory that ETH is rising because it's being tied up increasingly in the DAO, leaving fewer ETH's to trade.

But that's the thing...it's not tied up. TheDAO is an investment fund that will eventually release every single ETH that's given to it...

He is partly right since the funds are locked-up for the next 10 days if I recall correctly, thereby reducing potential selling pressure during these 10 days.

Good point to both of you. Short term, the coins are locked...so is the rise only for the short-term?

Who knows, if Coinbase and/or OKcoin will really add ETH the rise is probably sustainable.

1317  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 19, 2016, 05:15:00 PM
Not really. It is quite obvious that Ethereum is not going away anytime soon

Eth is going to be going straight down.  The single entity Eth manipulator is running a greater fool pump to attempt to exit the market before the DAO people can dump their $130 million denominated in Eth on May 28th.  So you have that DAO + Bitcoin halving which will both crater the Eth price.

As for what you might be able to expect from Bitcoin halving from this bollinger analysis:

--pic--

Generally tightness of bollinger bands doesn't say anything about the direction, with all the (hostile) debates going on I wouldn't be suprised if it breaks down. In addition, that resistance zone (460-480$) has been tested multiple times without a succesful break. If, however, the price manages to break that, it will likely coincide with a MACD flip to green and an explosive breakout.

Sorry monero noob here.  I'm worried I sent coins to an old fork and lost money.  Is the latest version of MoneroX safe to use?

I should've tested with a smaller amount but I sent 118 XMR to an address it controls but still don't see it.  I assume it is because the blockchain is taking forever to sync.  Still only on block 40000 and have been running this for a while now.  Something else weird keeps happening.  Keeps jumping back to 37921

I think this is the txid even tho it shows way more than 118.
http://chainradar.com/xmr/transaction/79fbe7a2013436601f4aafa45f442cce601a186c5d39a0957806b1bffc640f43

Does this mean we are on block 1049316?  This is taking FOREVER to sync.  It's so slow.  Is there a different way to grab the whole blockchain?  The blockchain.bin that I have is already 5.7GB

[1] MoneroX isn't maintained anymore and it's generally advised against using it. Better to use the binaries available on the website, see:

https://getmonero.org/downloads/

[2] I am not sure which version MoneroX uses, but I think it is the version without the database, which takes up a lot of RAM and takes a lot of time to sync. Therefore, I'd advise to download the latest binaries from the site and sync that. There is a linux guide here on how to set it up, for Windows it's pretty similiar:

https://github.com/monero-project/monero-site/blob/master/knowledge-base/user-guides/create_wallet.md

[3] Make sure to backup the .keys file and the mnemonic seed (the words), if you have that you can always restore your wallet or open your wallet with simplewallet (the official wallet).

It's unlikely your funds are lost. I'd advise to first try and sync with the official binaries (bitmonerod.exe (the daemon)). Alternatively, you could try importing the .raw blockchain available on the website, see instructions here:

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/releases

Under "Updating: Blockchain Conversion"

It shows more than 118 XMR because that is how Monero works.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm syncing with v0.9.4 right now and will let that run today.  It's definitely going faster.

I created a password for my old MoneroX but I have no clue where it placed the wallet.dat
This is why I'm thinking I lost money.  I don't see no .keys, they have to be generated somewhere.  It created an address for me.

Do you recall your wallet name? If so, just search your computer for it, it must be somewhere. I think MoneroX placed the wallet files in the same directory as MoneroX itself is located. Bear in mind no such thing as wallet.dat exists for Monero. The file you need to look for is <your_wallet_name>.keys. Thus, if your wallet was called testwallet, search for testwallet.keys. Perhaps searching for just .keys file will also yield the wanted result.

Which operating system are you using btw?

This is why I'm concerned, it never asked to make a name.  It just asked to make a password.  It wasn't seed words.

I'm running windows 7

goto my computer
double click on your C drive
in the top right, there will be a little field that says "Search Local Disk"
click in there and type
*.keys
and then hit enter

this will find you keys file

Okay cool, I did find something.

account.bin = 39MB
account.bin.address.txt (has the address file I sent to)
account.bin.keys (1kb)

Hopefully I can import that last one in...

After bitmonerod.exe is fully synced* place those files in the same directory simplewallet.exe is in. It should be able to recognize your wallet.

You can check if you are fully synced by entering the following command into the daemon:

"diff" ("status" would also work)

This will give you the blockheight you are on. This blockheight should be equal to the height shown on moneroblocks.info. Bear in mind that you have to use the same password to open the wallet.
