901  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I retrieve the private key for my bitcoincore wallet address? on: April 05, 2024, 01:26:16 PM
But I also started to think twice about using Bitcoin Core because the synchronization process takes a lot of time.
Luckily, you only have to do that once. After that, is "only" downloads 11 GB per month at current rate.

It might be easier to use electrum.
Definitely!

Does using multiple USBs also require having bitcoincore data on each USB?
You only need to backup your wallet, not the blockchain. Worst case, you'll just download it again.
902  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: For beginners: Create a Bitcoin wallet securely and privately on: April 05, 2024, 09:45:57 AM
That's it.  You're now ready to receive bitcoins to this wallet.
How does that help a new Bitcoin user? He now has an address on a system he doesn't use for anything else. Chances are he'll email the address to himself, and lose his Bitcoins using CTRL-C CTRL-V on his Windows reboot with malware.

Tail OS is a good solution for people who have to use public computers and have to share computers with other people.
Not really. A hardware key logger is still possible. It's better to avoid entering any sensitive information (including email passwords or even identifying data like email addresses) on public computers. Besides, most public computers won't allow you to boot from your own device.

I have started a learn and earn program for my facebook group members
What's the goal for the participants? Do they want to "get rich quick", "earn money on the internet", or how to safely store Bitcoin after buying it? If it's the first two, I can't help them much. But if it's the latter, they don't need to learn a lot before they can start doing it. There's no need to install a full node for instance.
I would like to encourage people for learning more about bitcoin and its ecosystem.
I get that Wink But it doesn't answer my question: what's the goal for the participants? You're trying to encourage them, which is commendable. But the need for that depends on what they want to do with that knowledge.
904  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [FREE RAFFLE] - Custom eXch Cryptosteel Capsule (#6)! on: April 05, 2024, 06:38:12 AM
I'll take 80 Smiley Just one number is enough.
905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I retrieve the private key for my bitcoincore wallet address? on: April 05, 2024, 06:13:56 AM
the most important thing is that it's safe.
If you're using Bitcoin Core as a hot wallet, there's always the risk of online attacks. My advice: keep only amounts you're willing to risk in hot wallets (for daily use), and keep the rest in cold storage.
Also, make a few backups. I prefer different brand USB sticks. And once in a while make a new backup to include newer transaction labels.
906  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: n0nce's Steel Washer Backup jig (customisable) on: April 04, 2024, 06:43:15 PM
there is still a chance of finding correct order when you know 24 from total of 2048 words.
That gives 6.2*1023 possibilities. With 12 words, it's doable. With 24, it's not going to happen.
907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running core on an upgraded notebook under Bodhi. on: April 04, 2024, 02:34:40 PM
Well the electricity would be free, but there is a hardware cost involved in setting up a rig. It wouldn't have to be Bitcoin oif course.
The only alternatives I've seen require video cards, which are still power hungry. I'm trying to save you the hassle here Wink

Anyway, that won't happen this year, as I've still got too much to sort out. I enjoy restoring old cars, and I ought to start going to vintage meets again. My social life is crap at the moment.
I enjoyed watching Wheeler Dealers, but don't have to space to do any restaurations on my own. I guess van life doesn't give you much options either.
908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running core on an upgraded notebook under Bodhi. on: April 04, 2024, 02:19:23 PM
You mentioned mining: I'd say forget about that. Mining, in general, is only profitable if you have dirt cheap and abundant electricity.

You could get them for 800 EUR a pop, way back in 2014 back when they were running a fundraiser.
That's a lot of money for a vendor lock-in.
910  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running core on an upgraded notebook under Bodhi. on: April 04, 2024, 01:00:27 PM
It has the i5-12450H, with a TDP of 45W and a 60 Wh battery. That indeed doesn't leave much battery time when running at high CPU load.
I avoid any laptop with TDP above 15W nowadays. Especially as a digital nomad without grid power, lower power consumption is a big win.
911  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: n0nce's Steel Washer Backup jig (customisable) on: April 04, 2024, 11:28:53 AM
I was thinking maybe a device could be invented to automate many parts of this process.
Anything that automates something adds the risk of storing the data.

One part I do not understand is the serial number part. Why are you stamping that onto the washers?
If you drop 24 washers without knowing the order, your backup is worthless.
912  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running core on an upgraded notebook under Bodhi. on: April 04, 2024, 11:09:14 AM
I let the notebook carry on sync'ing with the screen off. This upped the projected battery life from 40 minutes to 1 hour 50.
Can you share the exact laptop type/specs? I'm surprised, I have an old Celeron laptop that measured under 4W with the screen on (on a low setting) while idling. My own old laptop consumes about 20W while idle (with 2 disks), but I'd expect better from most newer laptops. I also have an i5 that, depending on system load, has an estimated battery life ranging from 2 to 8 hours.

I will check to see where it stores the blockchain.
Probably in ~/.bitcoin/blocks.

it looks as if I may be able to earn a few sats by running a Lightning node. That has its appeal, but I'll need to see if it will work if I am only online for part of the day.
From what I've read about it, "a few sats" will literally be only a few. I wouldn't run a node if it's not online most of the time, that's just annoying for anyone who shares an open channel with you.

I've got an unlimited data plan on my mobile, but I don't believe that anything in this life is unlimited, not even the deep state scams and control. So I'm reluctant to tether to my phone to maintain the blockchain. I suspect that it could lead to my activity being throttled.
Here, most "unlimited" plans have a FUP of 10-20 GB per day. After the initial sync, my Bitcoin Core consumes 11 GB bandwidth per month.
Note that tethering also eats phone battery power.
913  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: List of VPN Service Providers - 2024 on: April 04, 2024, 09:39:15 AM
you are able to purchase a lifetime license. Perpetuity is always a tricky choice in products as it doesn't provide a constant flow of revenue like subscriptions
I've seen too many cases in which "lifetime" isn't really lifetime. I wouldn't pay $500 up front for this.

I'm asking them return crypto to my wallet
If it's based on government sanctions, it may not be up to Kraken (but I'm not a legal expert on international law).

Kraken disabled the legacy interface. The new interface uses 100% CPU on my old laptop, and slows down my entire system. That's a terrible design choice Sad
915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running core on an upgraded notebook under Bodhi. on: April 04, 2024, 08:11:20 AM
battery life is a consideration, and it looks as if I will only get about a third of the life that I was getting under Windows.
If you have power monitoring installed, you can see the total power consumption (almost) real time.
During block download, your CPU and SSD are actively used. Google the CPU type with "tdp", and you'll see it's maximum power consumption. It's probably 15W. The Hynix adds (up to) 7W. Chances are your laptop consumes only a few watts when idle, and stressing it adds the above 22W. IBD on battery is a challenge.
But since it uses USB charging: have you tried charging from a battery pack? I've never tried this with a laptop, so I can't tell if the power output is too little.

obviously Bitcoin is making some demands.
That's an understatement Smiley

I have Bitcoin running from a sub-directory in the Downloads directory, and that offends my aesthetics. I really should have planned my file structure before I started to install programs. I'm of a mind to leave it alone and live with its current home.
The data is stored in ~/.bitcoin by default, right? That means all you need to do is move Bitcoin Core to wherever you want it to be.
916  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] KRAKEN.COM - Exchange with USD EUR GBP JPY CAD BTC LTC XRP NMC XDG STR ETH on: April 04, 2024, 07:49:35 AM
they freeze my account
Based on your other posts: any chance you're in a sanctioned jurisdiction? See kraken.com/legal.
917  Other / Meta / Re: Identifying the linked-to post in a topic (SMF patch) on: April 04, 2024, 07:37:58 AM
Normally, the (optional) fragment identifier at the end of the URL (#msg60743 in the example link) suffices to position the viewport so that the linked-to post is obvious/unambiguous. But, sometimes that mechanism isn't precise enough, like when the post is the last or second-to-last one on its page
When images without height/width tags load, the page "jumps" a bit, which makes the post I'm looking for not the first one that shows even if it's in the middle of a long page.

Quote
I also sometimes lose track of the linked-to post when I scroll around the page for a bit to get some context before reading the actual post (then, I find myself going to the address bar and hitting Enter so that the browser snaps to the right post again).
I do that too Tongue

Quote
LoyceV and TryNinja would probably appreciate some notice before you merge it
I have so many (old) scrapers, I can't tell if this is going to break something. I'll just see when it happens.

I think your changes are too subtle to quickly identify the post I'm looking for.
918  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] BitMixList.org - Bitcoin Mixer List on: April 04, 2024, 07:27:45 AM
In addition, delving into this case, I was able to talk to some people whose level of knowledge is colossal. And they shared information that sinbad was not confiscated by the authorities, saying that this was just a very well-developed trick to relieve tension.
I do like the theory but there is one major thing stopping me from believing it and that is the official statement of the Dutch Financial Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD), their official website is www.fiod.nl, and the article regarding seizing Sinbad is found here https://www.fiod.nl/fiod-takes-large-crypto-currency-mixer-off-the-air/ which also contains the same image that was present in Sinbad's website.
The article explicitly says
Quote
The servers of Sinbad.io were seized in the Netherlands and Finland.
I do believe the domain name and servers were seized, but at the time it did sound like the people operating it would continue. Then Admin locked their topic and banned the OP from Bitcointalk, so it ended here.

Explain the Unspendable Transaction Output (UTXO) model
UTXO stands for "unspent transaction output". It's probably a good idea to explain how transaction change works, I've seen many Newbies who got confused. The cash analogy fits better than the banking analogy.
