Do concrete hulled boat-islands get barnacles on their hulls? If they do, do the barnacles make the concrete hulls stronger? Or will they add extra weight that will sink the islands after a while?

Cool

I plan on growing biorock on the spar in order to foster the growth of coral for a very large coral garden that will make for a perfect environment for fish.

It also helps to prevent corrosion of the steel spar.

^^^ Whatever you want to pay for it. "Seasteading" is simply a word that holds a deeper meaning for some. Move onto a houseboat, and you just might have seasteading.

How much? Whatever you can or want to spend. Lots of people have taken a nap in a canoe. Move into the canoe out on the ocean, and you just might be seasteading.

Cool

Seasteading is not just living on a houseboat. It involves living at least 12 nautical miles outside of a nation's territorial waters.

A house boat cannot just sit in such waters due to the waves.

Ocean Builders seasteads are built on top of a spar which allows you to live above the waves.

As for price...we are targeting $150-$200k. First 20 will get the seastead at cost, and help to decide the way forward for future seasteading.

I created http://www.seasteadtalk.org for discussion of seasteading.

i tried to register but got an error.

EDIT: nevermind tried again and got in.

for me, one aspect of a seastead is the isolation from supplies. living in the boonies i tend to have everything needed to survive for several weeks with absolutely no dependencies on the outside world. well within some practical limits. so i would have backups (sometimes several) of all critical infrastructure, tools and parts to repair most things along with a small machine shop, above average medical supplies, and overkill on monitoring equipment for environment and systems status. like, lots of stuff like that. i live in the boonies, and ive learned that if you dont have it with you, you dont have it period. simple enough thing but when the stores are a dozen miles or more away in rough seas for unknown period of time thats the same thing. so any seastead i design will be pretty big. living quarters would be a small part of it. command and control will be as redundant and as state of the art as i can make it, after all, when you get down to it this is a sea going vessel that my life will depend on. so costly for the specs that i am comfortable with, which are admittedly above specs a typical seasteader may have.

dont get me wrong, the isolation and self sufficiency is a good thing for me, but a lot of planning goes into that. its not just the base platform which worries me, you guys seems to have those problems licked. its the rest of it that i worry about. ive learned to only trust critical infrastructure that either i design and build, or is so well proven i can adapt off the shelf items for my use. i have no intention of getting into some life threaten situation that i could have avoided because i skimped on kit loadout.

We're about 20 minutes to the closest restaurant by speed boat. 30 minutes and a ride through traffic to the nearest hospital. Where I lived before it was usually an hour drive in traffic to the main shopping area so you just go a few times a week or less.

Though I am in the process of buying a small sail boat. It has an engine and I'll add an outboard for redundancy. Plus the sail. So a liesurely ride into town could take an hour or so.

I'm out at the site. Moored up for the evening after getting the spar anchored.

Are you going to just visit or to live/sleep there in the seastead?

I really can't even imagine how it would be to live in it. Eager to hear your comments on the real life experience.

My gf and I will be living there. We will be doing plenty of blogging and updating.

I created http://www.seasteadtalk.org for discussion of seasteading.
Are you in international waters or are you under a certain nations laws? How do you bank and when not using crypto what currency are you using? I am guessing that hotspot has a bill paid somehow.

We're only 12nm from Phuket Thailand so fairly close to anything we need. My gf fills up our Internet with her Thai bank account. I fill the account as needed via bitcoin exchange.

Food and Internet should be our only expenses. And we hope to catch/grow more food over time.

But Thai food is cheap. I want to put a big smoker in the big spar.

Wow. So serene.  I have worked in an industrial setting all my life; I don't think I could handle the quiet.
 Doing any fishing?

I have worked night shift in Afghanistan for 2 years. I enjoy serene.

Hopefully I can do drone fishing  Grin

how is the bandwidth out there?

We are at around 3Mbps download and 1Mbps upload with just a small pocket Wifi device. I have an antenna booster that should get that up closer to 20Mbps. The key here is distance.

not bad

just how far out are you?

Over 12nm out.

We describe it all at http://ocean.builders

Congratulations! It's getting real. It's not for me, but some people may enjoy the idea.
I wonder about water. Will each house have its own desalination device?

Yes. We are installing a water maker that creates 60 liters of water per hour.

check this out ...
https://newatlas.com/so-fold-float-shelter/57961/

i think there are other house-boat, flaoting structures already out there you can just tow out to anywhere ... hell, just buy some abandoned freighter, super-yacht whatever floats and has okay living quarters and space and tow it to the location. Those flotels (floating hotels) the rigs use when under construction can house >1000 person, there's sure to be some used /old examples of those around that can be had for a few bitcoins.

https://www.google.com/search?q=flotel+image

I think they are overthinking it, people just want a P.O. Box number and small apartment to establish a residency in international waters ....

The key part of seasteading is a higher degree of sovereignty. More than just a house boat. International waters is ideal. Any home in international waters needs to be able to handle the waves.

Our spar design allows us to live above the waves.

I am currently in a boat towing the platform out to international waters where it will be placed on top of a 20 meter long spar. This will allow the platform to be 5 meters above the water. The location we will be has 5 meter waves maybe once in 100 years.
