962  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If governments block Bitcoin, does Bitcoin have no value? on: June 15, 2021, 06:56:53 PM
Value is subjective, and is determined by you, not others. It will be valuable (or not) for you, no matter what the gov or anybody else says.

For some people it won't be worth hiding from the State, for others they will value it more because the State is not involved. The result is the price market.

Those who keep their bitcoins considers them more valuable than selling them. Its that simple really, the value of things is clearly explained by the Austrian School of Economy, and this includes bitcoin.

The true holders know exactly why they are holding it, and are not lemmings followers without knowing why, Those won't change their minds overnight for no real reason.
963  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS & Braiins OS+ custom ASIC firmware: optimize performance & efficiency on: June 15, 2021, 05:03:13 PM
I got it to upgrade to 3/3/2021

Upgrade to today's release, it incorporates more fixes:

NEW RELEASE: Braiins OS+ 21.06

## Overview

This is a major release that provides improved support for the Antminer x17(including e) family. The machines will be auto-upgraded. If you want to force the update right away then use the toolbox (update section).

## Antminer X17

- [feature] improved tuner for all x17 models ensures optimum miner performance at user configured power levels
- [feature] support for S17e and T17e
- [feature] Braiins OS+ Manager support enabled for the entire x17 family
- [feature] improved DPS, Dynamic Power Scaling now also automatically upscales the power limit, when the miner's temperature is at least 5 degrees bellow the HOT limit and the fans are running bellow 80%.
- [feature] BOSminer will run and ignore incorrect configurations only when Braiins OS+ Manager is used so that the configuration can be fixed. If Braiins OS+ Manager is not used, BOSminer will power off when there is an incorrect configuration.

Note: this is the first public release for the S17e and T17e. As always with new releases, we recommend to test it on a few machines before rolling it out to an entire farm.

If you have auto upgrades enabled, during the day or tomorrow the miners will update themselves, otherwise you will have a blue "upgrade" button in the top right corner of the miner's web UI you can use at your convenience to upgrade (single click to it will do it without further confirmation).

Try to stick to changing only the power limit value (with autotuning always enabled). If you want to "lower frequencies", lower the power limit instead and wait for the autotuner to do its job. Do not disable autotuning, and don't bother changing the frequency value directly as this does nothing while autotuning is enabled (true placebo there).

With Braiins OS+ you normally only manipulate the power limit value and nothing else. Less power = lower frequencies and less heat dissipation (better efficiency at the given limit). The unique autotuner is the core value of Braiins OS+ and disabling it would be pointless unless for diagnosing.

Always give time to the autotuner. It can take many hours. Failing boards will be retried later even after the others are already Stable, so giving the miner a day or so to stabilize is a good idea.

While manipulating the power limit, and only after the process is finished (all boards Stable) the fans should NOT be at 100%. Braiins OS+ is more conservative than Stock firmware for the S17/T17 family (due to their infamous bad soldering from factory issue) so it uses lower temperature and power limit values by default. If the fans are at 100% after Tuner Status displays Stable, this means you are above the TARGET temperature for some reason.

So either improving the air flow on site or reducing the power limit to make the miner work less should give a safety margin back for the fans (anything less than 100%) to act when ambient temperature rises for whatever reason. You can also enable Dynamic Power Scaling to have an additional tool in case the Temperature reaches HOT it automatically reduces the power limit the step you define there.

You have it doing 18.xTH per board on the 2 'better' boards, but isn't that what it's supposed to do with standard firmware? (without losing a 2% fee)

So either you lose 2% off that, or it's running 2% harder than what you see to cover the fee and still only getting the expected hash rate?

Fear not, when you use Slush Pool with Braiins OS+, the pool fee is waived. Its even cheaper than yours...
Also, but most important: How many watts the miner is using at that speed vs "standard" (your beloved bmminer)?
964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin halal? on: June 15, 2021, 02:10:29 PM
Compare bitcoin with fiat (physical money):

The bitcoin cannot be counterfeited, fiat can.
The quantity of fiat is not fixed and can (and is) increased on a whim, not bitcoin.
Bitcoin makes banks and financing obsolete (loans with interest).
Neither Bank nor State can do fractional reserve banking with bitcoin, at least not openly (easy to verify transparency: see Bitcoin day).

This should give you an idea where this is going. If anything is haram, its fiat money. Bitcoin is even helping you act good instead. Remember that this is about the money itself, not what people are doing with money.

The mathematical representation that cannot be counterfeited but is unique vs a paper issued by some Bank or State that can be copied and falsified. Think about it. Also in history, who and when was the field of mathematics advanced, where do the numbers used by the whole world come from? Etc...

Please remember than in a modern bank, there is no such a thing as a "deposit". If you give money to a bank, you are doing a loan with interest. I wonder what those scholars think about banks which Bitcoin renders obsolete, or optional (not necessary) at most.

The Austrian school of economy has been proposing to end this perverted system of fractional reserve banking and garbage money debt driven economy for more than a century.
965  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador has become the first country to make #Bitcoin legal tender! 🇸🇻 on: June 14, 2021, 08:48:48 PM
This is one of the news that the bitcoin community has been waiting for, the government of elavador strongly believes that adopting blockchain-based cryptocurrencies is the right solution to develop the country's economy so that it continues to really develop.

Bullshit.  The El Salvador bill (and even the various El Salvador govt reps - or peeps directly involved in discussing the direction of such developments) have not said anything about the "adoption of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies".. at least not so far.. Maybe you need to show me such a link if such a thing exists?

That sounds like your dumbass wishful-thinking interpretive way of framing the matter of what is going on in hope that you or some other dweeb can pump some kind of stupid-ass shitcoins, put out lame and misleading talking points or other nonsense.

Thankfully this is about bitcoin, not garbage altcoins or the little side projects from the institutions that are destined either shrink or disappear entirely.

Sadly these types are common here, talking about "ecosystem" which is euphemism for altcoins which most (all) reproduce the same flaws of fiat or worse.

The politicians and some media people in my country love the word "cryptocurrencies" its no wonder we have the worst economy of the planet. Bitcoin is no mere cryptocurrency or "something blockchain", Bitcoin is the reason the world is changing, not a blockchain or flawed clones and blockchain less tokens.

Its not about cryptocurrencies, its about Bitcoin. It matters, because the others do not follow the same principles and simply confuse or worse.

969  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: El Salvador: Bitcoin será moneda de curso legal on: June 13, 2021, 04:18:18 PM
Bukele, El Salvador y la hiperbitcoinización, capítulo cero
...

I am trying to determine how long tuner tunes.

also what are people getting with the tuner set to 1425 watts

I am at 1 hour and 11 minutes and around 42 th at  1425 watts setting

I have this firmware

2020-12-17-0-27e4d572-20.12-plus

You are running a version too old, the x17 family has gotten many updates and bug fixes, in the following days should come another release, but you can try enabling nightly feeds (only if installed into NAND, SD image here) in the meantime.

The latest nightly is 2021-06-10.
971  Other / Off-topic / Re: Your password was leaked? on: June 11, 2021, 07:56:22 PM
Never reuse passwords, and do change them from time to time. A password manager such as KeepassXC is your friend, the password for the manager itself should be good and changed periodically. And avoid unsafe operating systems, use Linux or BSD.

With an unsafe OS you could have a malware silently capturing your keystrokes and sending screenshots of your desktop, etc. If you still don't use Linux, switch today, before its too late...
972  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dear Elon Musk. on: June 11, 2021, 07:50:38 PM
Create a Bitcoin wallet and don't save it.
Lose the seed words.
Copy paste addresses to send money to it
???
Profit!

Or use any of the gazillion addresses of people who come crying saying they lost their password/seeds.

I don't see any point in burning bitcoin since its limited production anyway and some have been getting lost by people's own mistakes or simply passing away without leaving it to anyone. Some altcoins do that, especially those with unlimited production, in their pointless attempt to affect its own market price.

Bitcoin doesn't need any "eco" initiative, the market is self-regulating this. Elon Musk is simply ignorant or attempting to manipulate the market. Mining is becoming more and more unprofitable, large inefficient mining will stop, the last miners will be those with free energy from renewable sources, on a much smaller scale.

When price surges for whatever reason this might seem to be delayed, but make no mistake, it is coming sooner or later. Every 4 years a halving occurs...
973  Other / Off-topic / Re: What is the dark web? on: June 11, 2021, 07:18:24 PM
Have you ever used the dark web and for what purposes? I even found several such forums, but I could not open them. It feels like the browser just doesn't support them.
Is that what Using Web when the light is off? that's why its called Dark Web?  Wink

Nooo, I think dark web is when you switch to dark theme mode when viewing websites. This is a new trend in web development.
There are those who even believe that the dark web should be called eco-friendly because of its low electricity consumption.

You are closer than most other posts in this thread, but you are incorrect about electricity (because we don't use CRTs anymore), tho it might be true for oleds most computer screens are still LCD with white leds as backpanel. Dark is easier for the eyes when you are not in the sun, the Stylus add on is your friend...

Dark web.... well for starters The Onion Router is not the only "hidden" network.
No you don't need TOR browser to browse a .onion site, this is false. But its a good idea because things like Chrome and Firefox are spying on you.
This is basically internet without rules, most content is self hosted anonymously from people's own computers, which are not exactly server class so fast it isn't.

Content varies. It does not necessarily mean criminal garbage, there is also political dissidence from countries where this isn't allowed. Most criminal content is actually set up by authorities to try and catch you anyway.

Here is Duckduckgo "dark" web edition. Its no different than the normal one: https://3g2upl4pq6kufc4m.onion/
And it will give you results from the normal web, its not a .onion search engine but those do exist.
Of course, you cannot open that url if your computer is not set up for TOR. Nowdays they bundle it with a browser, but this is optional. TOR runs standalone and you can connect anything that supports socks4a/5, such as your Bitcoin wallet...

Tor is a bit unusual to the others in that it allows access to the normal web from it, but i don't recommend doing that, your IP will change a lot and will be nearly universally banned or heavily crippled (even this forum does that which is ironic as satoshi used it) or you'll be tortured to death with captchas.

Content hosted inside those separate networks is what some call "dark", but doesn't say anything about the content itself. It can be nothing special like wikipedia or some horrible picture. Again, internet without rules, anything goes you have been warned.

Imagine your social media had no moderation, something like that.
974  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin has intrinsic value like Gold but better? on: June 11, 2021, 05:50:06 PM
NOTHING has intrinsic value. Value is subjective.

What good is gold for you when you are in a desert while dehydrating?

You will only understand bitcoin when you study the Austrian School of economy.
975  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: And now the IMF comes in! on: June 11, 2021, 05:45:09 PM
Imagine Bitcoin coming to Venezuela, foreign people buying land and citizenship and investing their BTC in the economy, country would soon pay all debt they have to foreign banks and institutions.
This could happen to other countries and you can now understand why IMF would be worried because they would not be so important factor anymore.

Not gonna happen with a ruler that thinks the economy is a lie and it can be commanded at will. Bitcoin is essentially telling them to go away, goodbye banks, central bank and world bank (IMF). Obviously the opposite of what they believe in, which is how we ended with Petro rather than Bitcoin with the obvious result.
976  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 'El Salavador' could impose national TV display BTC price in dollars all time on: June 11, 2021, 05:39:42 PM
Fast? We have been waiting more than a decade... About time someone did it. NOW lets see the others getting jealous and somehow pushing for their countries to do a similar move.
977  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador has become the first country to make #Bitcoin legal tender! 🇸🇻 on: June 11, 2021, 05:31:18 PM
South America getting in is a pretty good move, although El Salvador is a small country, it will still make a difference for the market if the head of the government is the one that actively supports it.
Yeah I just hear the news too and this will certainly break the laws that other South American cities around the world follow and will lead the way for them to adopt towards use in their own countries.
I can see Venezuela being next.

Unless a true miracle occurs, we could be one of the last. Even Cuba has higher chances.

Bitcoin represents freedom, it means The State getting out of the way. This is the opposite of the current Venezuelan regime. They made their own coin (like a CBDC) precisely because they didn't trust Bitcoin (in fact any altcoin is precisely that, worse when made by the State).

The over-regulation and creation of more bureaucratic institutions made it hostile for the small miner. What El Salvador did is what we have asked all these years instead of making that garbage Petro they just had to adopt Bitcoin, but they didn't listen since it goes against all they "learned" about "economy" which is simply "command economy", and of course they can't make more bitcoins when they please. We have the worst fiat coin of the world for a reason: Those currently in power are against economic freedom, they just repeated all the mistakes of the now extinct socialist bloc and many more mistakes from history, Ie. Roman inflation and fixing of product prices by decree under penalty of death (which didn't stop the inflation and made it much worse).

And many of them see the "economy" like some sort pseudo-science, capitalist lies, blah blah, at least that's what they say in public.

And yet, it moves...

Thanks to El Salvador, I do hope some other countries get jealous from all the foreign investing moving there, but this is more likely in countries with more economic freedoms not the opposite. Venezuela is where it is due to the State intervention, when they go over-budget they simply add more zeroes to their State bank accounts, printing is not even done anymore and we were forced into a cashless society and hyperinflation, by the time most noticed it was too late.

Cuba has better chance because they have been doing far longer what Venezuela is doing, and are becoming ready to do the next move into a more open economy, perhaps like Vietnam or China, they could start with Bitcoin tourism or such. Even their communist party has had discussions about Bitcoin and their youth see it with interest.

Venezuela needs the dinosaurs to go, the old fashioned politicians currently in power that dreamed for decades do the "utopian" socialism like the now extinct East Germany, they keep saying they can manage what the rest of the world failed at...

Make no mistake, there is a "Salvador" effect in the world, its starting to reverberate in the region with some politicians from neighbor countries starting the discussion. Not so much for Bitcoin, but because NOW they see so much foreign investments heading there.

Oh yeah, El Salvador has geothermal sources of energy (aka volcanoes). Large miners can simply build their own "carbon neutral" power plants and the country would be happy to keep them afterwards in the future, even sell the excess energy to starved neighbors. Win/win of course.

Repito: Venezuela NO CONOCE LA LIBERTAD.

980  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: El Salvador: Bitcoin será moneda de curso legal on: June 09, 2021, 06:32:32 PM
