In this article I found the latest news about Sam Bankman-Fried's stay in prison:

What to know about Sam Bankman-Fried's time in jail
https://www.reuters.com/legal/what-we-know-about-sam-bankman-frieds-time-notorious-brooklyn-jail-2023-09-27/

This criminal case has a strong political connotation, which is why it is dragging on. There are also cases in prisons when a defendant does not live to see trial due to health problems.

The internal turnover of cryptocurrency will be completely prohibited. That is, we, ordinary citizens, will not be able to buy something for cryptocurrency in Russian stores. But Russian companies will have to gain access to the possibility of exchanging cryptocurrency. This was stated by the Central Bank that a specialized banking organization will be created that will conduct transactions. To date, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing a tool for conducting industrial mining activities, which will provide business with digital liquidity for cross-border payments. The interest of entrepreneurs in investing in this activity is growing exponent. Fear of investors and the state is leaving. Moreover, a digital ruble is also being made on the basis of this technology.
This kind of reads like they only want to use crypto as a means to bypass international restrictions.

There is an industrial boom in Russia right now, factories are working in 3 shifts, just like in wartime. Trains with goods go to Russia from the south and east, and this works without cryptocurrencies. Russia has raw materials, energy, technology, so no sanctions will be effective. These sanctions only killed the profits of European companies, which were taken by Chinese companies

The Central Bank conducts its own policy and it is subordinated more to the IMF than to Russia, and the Central Bank of the Russian Federation has constant conflicts with the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank have different goals.

As for citizens, then indeed, if you buy goods with cryptocurrency, then this is a violation of the law. But there are no prohibitions on buying and selling cryptocurrencies. That’s why I exchange cryptocurrencies for money and then buy goods and do not break any laws.

So for practical purposes the ban is not an issue. Just cash into Rubles and buy what you want. Clever work around.

Of course this will mean retaliation form the west against its people for using crypto.

IE USA will tell me my mine helps support Russia as I help BTC LTC and Doge.

Ahh earth such a nice place.  To the day we stop the wars. (never) as you say you are now having lots of work for Russians. oh well.
To be honest, I'm not afraid to buy goods with cryptocurrency and break the law. This law exists, but it doesn't work. Another problem here is security. You should not conduct transactions with cryptocurrencies with strangers, because then you can be robbed, and the police will not look for cryptocurrencies. It is safer to make transactions in rubles. And if you need anonymity or a quick way to transfer money to a close relative abroad, then cryptocurrencies can help.

Another observation of mine is that cryptocurrencies do not play a big role in circumventing sanctions. Most of the businessmen I know who have production didn’t even use cryptocurrencies.
Cryptocurrencies are mainly used to escape from Russia. A businessman sells his property, exchanges it for cryptocurrencies and leaves for another country.

There is an opinion that there was an unspoken instruction from the top leadership to allow everyone dissatisfied with the country’s politics to leave. A completely humane agreement and a good solution will get rid of a large and dissatisfied mass of people. Many will not be able to return back, because their vacancies and businesses will be taken by other people.

Yeah, I remember, I think it was Biden, saying that disconnecting Russia from the Swift system was a "nuclear option" and they were hesitant to use it as it seems to harsh. When they've done it eventually it turned out not to be too effective at all.
I'm not up to date with all the EU restrictions, I know a few European countries opened bank accounts with Russian banks to be able to continue to trade, but I've no idea how that panned out.

As for citizens, then indeed, if you buy goods with cryptocurrency, then this is a violation of the law. But there are no prohibitions on buying and selling cryptocurrencies. That’s why I exchange cryptocurrencies for money and then buy goods and do not break any laws.

According to that article, private individuals are also not allowed to mine. But good to hear that people can still use exchanges freely. It's not all that bad then.

ps. I didn't realise you are Russian. Thanks for the first-hand info.
Not all banks in Russia are disconnected from the Swift system. I read in the news that some banks are working because it is impossible in the modern world to close all trade instantly, but for individuals Swift transfers are practically closed, so everyone I know uses cryptocurrencies.

I have not seen any laws banning mining, and the draft laws do not have legal force.

Sam goes to prison quietly for 110 years without Adderall and the politicians who laundered their money in FTX can relax hehe.
The 110 years is the maximum sentence he could get for his crimes. I know he's certainly not going to be slammed with that number of years, but I wish he could get more that what Zasad wrote.

Since the trial has come to an end, they jury have found him guilty of the seven count charges leveled against him and they've also reached a verdict. My question is, why waiting until March 28, 2024 before passing a verdict against him? Why not do it now that the trial has just ended and the case is still fresh in the hearts of everyone?
You are asking the right question, but the answer is obvious, because there are people in politics who do not want SBF to go to prison, so the case will drag on. At the end of March 2024, new circumstances may again appear in the case and the trial will be postponed again. SBF rarely makes news anymore, and over time he will be forgotten.

989  Economy / Economics / Re: USA: 50 years since the beginning of the oil embargo on: November 03, 2023, 11:42:05 AM
The embargo was declared on October 17, 1973 in response to US President Richard Nixon's order for Operation Nickel Grass, which supplied US weapons to Israel. The latter was at that moment repelling attacks from Egypt and Syria, who intended to return the territories captured by the Israelis during the Six-Day War of 1967."

I think everyone has long forgotten about this story, but after it the United States began to accumulate oil reserves.
The situation in the world is very difficult now, but do you consider repeating such a scenario in 50 years?
Much has changed since that date, and it seems that the United States and the rest of the world powers have understood the lesson. These countries have begun to adopt policies to contain countries that have banned the export of oil and gas to them. Today, all countries in the region are friends of the United States, and the United States has military bases in all of those countries, and I mean here Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the Emirates, in addition to overthrowing the Iraqi regime and continuing pressure on the Iranian regime. Do you really think that there are those who still dare to carry out these movements that are hostile to the direct interests of the West?
I think that the US will lose political influence. The first call was the withdrawal of the army from Afghanistan. Direct global conflicts are unlikely due to the presence of nuclear weapons in many countries, but economic wars will exhaust opponents. The US and Europe will not win a guerrilla war against a billion people in the Middle East.

In theory it might be possible but in reality it will be impossible to achieve again.
The embargo will never happen because the US and EU will not lose a political influence in the middle east, rich countries there still need US and EU.
Too many factions in the middle east, and many of them busy fighting with each other.

And i think the withdrawal from Afganistan is a smart move, why would US waste money, resources, and human lives for a corrupt gov who done nothing but only waste the money from the US tax payers?
Well, US is the one who lose interest on Afganistan.
You will forgive me for speaking harshly, but people are a resource that can be attracted for money and sent to war.
Why spend huge resources on supporting Israel where the chances of winning are almost impossible, and large territories will require large investments that Israel does not have.

Here it is necessary to clarify exactly which region you are talking about because America has actually lost its political influence on the Asian side, and for this reason some may imagine that it is no longer able to confront the Gulf region and the Middle East alone. But on the other hand, it succeeded in having a greater influence on the countries of the Arab Gulf and the Middle East using various mechanisms. Neither Saudi Arabia nor any classic power in the Gulf region is capable of challenging the United States and the world today as it did in the seventies. The United States took a lesson from what happened, especially after OPEC failed at that time to limit the effects of the embargo. At the same time, those countries that succeeded in influencing the economies of major countries at that time no longer think about using the same pressure again because of the policies of connections of interests.
I think that the United States cannot wage a full-fledged war in the east. Their aircraft carriers are old and more like a large floating target that is destroyed by a supersonic missile. Therefore, wars have always been successfully waged by puppet politicians.

it was announced that the United States is about to become the main producer of oil and gas on the planet, leaving behind the current champions - Russia and Saudi Arabia.
What do you mean by "main"? You know that US is the biggest consumer of energy and currently despite the high production, they face a deficit of about a 7 million barrels of oil per day. They cover that huge deficit by importing oil from mainly West Asia.

Because of this massive consumption and deficit US can never become a major global supplier. The reason why you see a country like Saudi Arabia export this much oil is because they have a tiny domestic consumption (3 million bpd I believe)!

I think everyone has long forgotten about this story, but after it the United States began to accumulate oil reserves.
You mean the Strategic Oil Reserves?
Over the past year because the oil production by OPEC in general and also oil exports to US has decreased, that has forced them into releasing their strategic reserves at about 2-3 million barrels per day to cover the difference. It is currently sitting at its lowest.

I did some calculations a while back that if I recall it correctly those reserves at best case scenario (no embargo) would last us less than a year. But in case of an embargo (7 million deficit) they would last about a month or two considering the ridiculously huge oil consumption by United States which is between 19 to 20 million bpd.

Another problem is that the oil US has which they are extracting is also running out! At this rate of extraction it will only last 3 or 4 more years. As you may know, when you tap into these resources their extraction becomes harder. In other words if today they are extracting something like 12 million bpd, next year they will be able to extract less like 9 million bpd because of pressure drops and other complications as it reaches the end.
That means the 7 million bpd deficit would grow even bigger.

The situation in the world is very difficult now, but do you consider repeating such a scenario in 50 years?
You mean the embargo? It's hard to say but right now I'd say the chances are little to none. If things take a turn for the worse it is possible though.
I think that there is a lot of oil in the USA, but the fields are either closed or not being explored due to government policy. With an oil price of 80-90 dollars per barrel, it is profitable to sell it even from the USA.
On the one hand, if your calculations are correct, then the United States must exert political pressure on Israel in order to end the conflict, otherwise if other countries enter the conflict, the price of oil may rise to $150 per barrel.

https://crypto.news/lawyer-expects-around-20-years-of-jail-time-for-sam-bankman-fried/
Bankman-Fried could face 15 to 20 years of jail time
"If the jury convicts Bankman-Fried, the judge will be responsible for deciding the duration of his sentence, according to Lesperance. He says the sentencing will hinge on the specific charges for which he is found guilty and the relevant sentencing guidelines.

Furthermore, the judge will take into account the fact that Bankman-Fried has no prior criminal record. The sum of money involved in the alleged wrongdoings is another vital aspect that will be considered, Lesperance says.
“If the U.S. Justice Department feels that any U.S. politicians on either side of the aisle have committed either campaign finance violations or honest services fraud (i.e. a scheme to defraud another of the intangible right to honest services through a scheme to violate a fiduciary duty by bribery or kickbacks), then we might see future indictments.”

“In reality, with US federal charges he would serve only 85% of that time […] being to 12.75 to 17 years. Given that SBF is currently 31, he could be out in his mid to late 40s.”

David Lesperance, managing director at Lesperance & Associates told crypto.news. "

CMC is basically a rating shop just like the rating agencies in the US which scammed their customers in 2008. CMC don’t care if they provide the right information or not. They will provide whatever information if you pay them. I noticed it when they insisted on listing ripple years ago. Ripple is not a crypto. It is a centralized database and yet cmc listed it on the top of their market cap list for years. (They still do it btw) Cmc helped ripple build its reputation, not for free probably. At least they used to have a way simpler ui, now (after binance acquired it) it looks just like another Chinese brothel where you can’t get away without getting scammed.
I agree with you completely. This post was made to ensure that cryptocurrency users do not make their conclusions based on data from only one free analytical service. Any information now needs to be checked for accuracy on several services.
It’s better to look for information on official sources of the project.

I haven’t written about Russia and cryptocurrencies for a long time. I will publish the latest data from Rosfinmonitoring (Federal Service for Financial Monitoring).
There are no laws. Cryptocurrency is property. Cryptocurrency cannot be used for payment, but this is not always respected.

"According to Rosfinmonitoring, the number of transactions with cryptocurrencies in Russia has tripled over the current year. The director of the department, Yuri Chikhanchin, announced this in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

“We see a significant number of transactions with cryptocurrency - their number has increased several times over the year. Thus, according to our data, the number of transactions with cryptocurrency in the nine months of this year exceeded 185 thousand (last year, during the same period, 60 thousand were recorded). As for the volume of operations, during the specified period it almost doubled,” said Chikhanchin."

"Statement of Commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero In Support of the CFTC’s 2023 Annual Report on the Whistleblower Program and Customer Education Initiatives
October 31, 2023

As a former Inspector General who knows firsthand how important whistleblowers are, I wholeheartedly support whistleblowers and the CFTC’s Whistleblower Program, and am very proud of the Program’s outsized results.  Cumulatively, the CFTC has awarded almost $350 million to whistleblowers, with more than $3 billion in enforcement sanctions ordered in cases associated with those awards.  This includes $16 million in awards this year, including more than $15 million to two whistleblowers who provided significant information and assistance that led the CFTC to bring separate successful enforcement cases.

Whistleblowers play a vital role in supporting CFTC investigations related to fraud and other illegality.  The CFTC could not fully protect customers and markets without whistleblowers.  Whistleblowers help identify fraud and other illegality, interpret key evidence, and save considerable Commission resources and time.  The faster we can stop fraud, the more we can protect customers from harm."

And it is very important who wins the elections, because part of the money is used to finance politicians.
So are you saying whoever wins the election will kindly donate back $9bn back to help pay customers their lost money? Nah, I don't think so. That would be raising too much eyebrows if you ask me. This will get people talking and they'd be like; "ooh, here's the dude that was in cohorts with Sam that made him cart all our funds away just to support his campaign". I feel whoever wins will be forever indebted to him for his generous donations and that will just be it.
It's painful but if I were these customers, I'd move on and accept the fact that I'm not getting my money back instead of holding up hope. I guess this the bitter lesson one learns when  they leave their funds in centralized exchanges.
Nobody will return the money, and even if you look at the history of such scams, it was always possible to return only a small part of the money. SBF is a clown who played his part and he is more likely to get a prison sentence. But in the USA there are different prisons, and in some the conditions are better than those of people outside. We need to see what prison he will be sent to after the court verdict.

Türkiye is not Europe and America, where tax laws are respected. There are a lot of Russians in Turkey and all private exchanges work the same way as shadow exchangers in Moscow. No taxes and no reports. If you come to a tourist city like Antalya, you can easily buy or sell your cryptocurrencies and even be able to pay for the rent of an apartment.
