981  Economy / Speculation / Re: If no imminent financial Armageddon, Bitcoin fair value below $50? on: April 02, 2013, 02:53:20 PM
I'd like to go on the record again saying that Bitcoin price increases are just getting started.
982  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price increases are just getting started on: April 02, 2013, 02:42:48 PM
Bitcoin cleared $100 yesterday, and I'm reviving this thread in which in 2011 I predicted wild growth ahead before even the first bitcoin bubble. Note that the arguments in the OP are no less valid today!
983  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-03-26? BBC/NPR segment about bitcoins, reported by MY MOM on: April 01, 2013, 11:20:34 PM
I don't know what segment she heard, but my mom just emailed me that she heard about bitcoins on her way home from work on NPR. Apparently it was a BBC segment with a bunch of interviews. Anybody know which segment that might be?

For me, bitcoin just crossed another major milestone  Smiley

She's convinced I'm risking jail time by working on next-gen bitcoin protocols, and I'm not totally convinced she is wrong about that.
984  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [blockchained.com] forum top16, news, charts on: March 27, 2013, 01:16:27 PM
There might be some downtime today or tomorrow. Will try to keep it as short as possible.

Argh! My homepage!!!

I came here to whine, but I see you already warned us. Thanks for keeping this great site going Smiley
985  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Announcement: Tradehill is back on: March 18, 2013, 07:22:34 PM
Oh man, I missed you guys. Tradehill was always my preferred exchange, and my trust for Jered went WAY up when they closed down and refunded ALL the money. No way Mtgox could do that, IMHO.

Welcome back!

Are you guys going to be at the bitcoin conference in May?

986  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin available soon to trade on etoro on: March 14, 2013, 02:21:07 PM
CEO of etoro is funding bitcoinx.org (they are working on colored coins, aka ripple on the bitcoin block-chain). I talk to Yoni all the time, trying to convince him to do colored coins my way, and that if he does I'll make him the richest man in the world. Haven't convinced him of that yet, but he is definitely into bitcoins big-time.
987  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: March 01, 2013, 06:02:18 PM
Just initiated a withdrawal, and it was broadcast with no fee! I might have to wait a long time before some generous miner includes the transaction.

Please consider at least allowing me to add a fee from my account for quick processing.

Thanks!

I'd like to conduct a test to see if anyone actually reads this page.
Please quote me if you have read this.

I still follow this thread, because it makes me feel good to see people reading my post and hopefully avoiding losing their coins as a result. I don't know if anybody else does though Smiley
989  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coinlab Bringing Bitcoin to Wall Street with MtGox Deal on: February 27, 2013, 06:13:47 PM
Wonderful, but where's my bitcoin ETF?

So frustrating to have money in my 401k, but nothing I can buy there to invest in bitcoin growth. Even a penny stock investing in bitcoin would make me happy. Right now the number of ticker options for exposing a normal trading portfolio to bitcoin is: zero.

990  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WTF happened to ripple? on: February 25, 2013, 10:20:50 PM
Theoretically the same IOUs could be issued using colored Bitcoins, but then you're cramming a round peg into a square hole. Because Ripple is designed to do this, it has features that makes this not just possible but efficient. Colored coins are good for smart property, but I don't see how they get you things like payment paths and distributed exchanges.

The network just treats a currency as an opaque 160-bit number. A portion of that namespace is reserved for three-letter currency codes. The network itself has no list of valid codes, so if you want to use "XBL" for barrels of crude, you can. The client has a list of known currencies, but anyone can modify that list and we can add configurable currencies to store in the wallet if there's demand.

On our planned feature list is fully custom currencies. A custom currency would be created by someone and would have an entry in the ledger. Its currency code would be a hash that would allow the client to find its specification. Custom currencies could be associated with a particular web site and have custom display rules and so on. The feature set is not fully fleshed out yet as the only real use case we have to far as demurrage.

Regarding custom currencies: awesome! For me, that is the really attractive use case for something like Ripple.

Regarding colored coins: Forum user killerstorm has demonstrated atomic trades and proof-of-concept for distributed exchange of colored coins. Bitcoinx.org is (IMHO) your closest competition, so you would be wise to keep a close eye on what they are doing.

I am watching both your project and theirs with great interest. Keep up the good work!

This thread seems like a good place to drop this:

992  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [PATCH] increase block size limit on: February 25, 2013, 08:21:43 PM

Dust is by definition a transaction output (bitcoin) so small that it is economically worthless, and will probably sit around unspent.

The fee paid is irrelevant.

This comment concerns me very much. Dust spam may not have economic value when denominated in bitcoin, but such "spam" can be representative of much larger transactions if the dust is representative (such as with "colored" bitcoins).

A tiny fraction of a bitcoin might represent an ounce of gold (for instance), and so it should NOT be assumed useless or disallowed by the protocol!

I think prioritizing transactions by fees is better than trying to rule out transactions which don't have an immediately obvious purpose.
993  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WTF happened to ripple? on: February 25, 2013, 06:51:59 PM
Hey Joel,

Thanks for answering so many questions on this thread. I'm hoping you can answer a couple more:

First, can you describe what benefits Ripple has over colored coins? The ripple client looks great, and is very easy to use, but couldn't the same IOUs be issued and traded using colored bitcoins?

I've been watching the development of colored coins over at bitcoinx.org, as I consider trade in stable currencies to be a "the next big step" for distributed currency. Ripple seems to have some great momentum, so maybe you will stay ahead of colored coins just based on getting there first.

Second, are you planning on support for IOUs denominated in user-specified units? For instance, could I use Ripple to release IOUs denominated in barrels of crude oil? Could I release IOUs denominated in future profits of a company (essentially a stock offering)?

Thanks!

995  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A new idea for bitcoin markets on: February 20, 2013, 10:40:11 PM
bitcoinx.org does decentralized exchanges between bitcoins and "colored coins" which are bitcoins with additional meaning. Eventually they will have coins with the color "USD" which solves a piece of the problem if they are successful.

Good luck on your project. Anybody making it easier to buy and sell bitcoins is ok in my book!
996  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BET] Gold, Oil, and Dollars will be stored in the bitcoin blockchain by 2015 on: February 20, 2013, 12:48:07 AM
Well, coloured coins (or the approach in this paper there) are not much more than taking e.g. a 1 USD note, writing down the serial number and claiming that whoever hands you this exact note can choose to get your car instead of just a different dollar note. Then you sell it off for the price of your car.

This approach does still NOT deal with the issue of trust or fraud - while it would be impossible to counterfeit a certain Bitcoin, it might be possible, that the car does not even exist any more or the one who claimed to hand out the car actually doesn't want to sell the car... Same goes for anything else that can be tracked in the block chain. I could hand out 1 million coloured coins for 1 EUR each and sell them for bitcoins. If the price of BTC rises against the EUR it might even be possible to pull this stunt off, so for the extreme bulls out there, here's how to do leverage in the wild west! Wink
Anyways, just like one has to trust me that I'll be able and willing to pay back EUR for the coins I handed out, there's also no way to force me to do that - and good luck in court with something like THAT ("I paid internet funny money for some different internet funny money, but this guy said he'd give me EUR for that different internet funny money that is actually the same internet funny money as the first one. - No, he's NOT a licensed e-money dealer at all, I just fired up this software...").

I prefer Ripple to this one, as it deals with this trust issue by involving people you know (as far as I understood it) instead of staying completely pseudonymous.

You've hit the nail on the head - that is the problem with colored coins - you have to trust the issuer to support their value.

This problem is exactly what I wrote my paper about!

I've posted this a couple other places today. Might as well put it here too:

Wow. That's quite a price spike.

I haven't posted this in awhile, so I'll just leave this here:

If the title reflects your ambition, then why not go all in and put Satoshi Nakamoto as the author?  After all, that too is aiming high.  I'd love to be in Satoshi's shoes and write a paper about Bitcoin.  You could also call him the "honorary author" if you want to make sure the feedback goes to you and all.  Like so we pretend he wrote it even though he really didn't, although it doesn't really matter.  Or you could call him the co-author, you could say you and he wrote it together.  It's not like he's going to appear just to say "Hey, I didn't write that!"

Ha! That would be awesome. The only catch would be if somebody challenged me to prove it using an account known to be in his control. I suppose I could claim that I lost all my passwords Smiley
